Re: OT: Useful Photography Tip #68

2013-09-17 Thread Bob W
Chris and I taught Eric about hyperfocal distance on our walk this weekend.

A refinement of zone focusing is the trick that paps used to use with flash.
They set the focus distance so that the frame covered more or less the full
height of a person, and set the aperture to the appropriate size for their
flash. When they wanted to pap their sleb they'd walk up to a fixed distance,
and fire. Always the same settings, always in focus, exposure always perfect.

Oh, and most nighttime pics on page 2 were shot between 16,000 and 20,000
ISO in TAv mode. Sometimes even 20,000 was not enough and some pics resulted
underexposed 2 or 3 stops, so that I decided to brighten them afterwards.
That explains the noise ;)

What's next?

2013-09-17 Thread Larry Colen
Prices on the K-5 II are plummeting. I think that we are getting pretty
close to the next big announcment. I'm going to take some guesses.

1) When you look at cameras that Ricoh and Pentax have produced lately:
GXR, Q, K-01, and even the K-5,50,500 you have a collection of
cameras where the company is not afraid to take a chance on something
different. I would be very surprised if the next camera is a "me too"
DSLR.

2) Each of the recent Pentax bodies has interesting mirrorless features.
DSLR, or mirrorless, it will have a strong mirrorless mode, with focus
peaking.

3) Mirror or mirroless, it will keep the K-mount. They just updated the
DA limiteds. They *could* be for just the current line up, but a radical
departure in camera mount seems out of character. If you look at the
percentage of Pentax sales to return customers (the only ones who know
who Pentax is), a radical change in lens mount would be shooting themselves
in the foot, because that would negate the biggest reason for many
of their customers to not change to Nikon or Canon.

Remember that wide angle lens that they showed, but didn't talk about
at the show where they released the K-01? The one where the rear element
extended into the mirrorbox? Either the camera will be a high end, K-mount
mirrorless, or it will have a mode where you can lock the mirror up, and
use lenses that extend into the mirrorbox. If I could lock the mirror
up on my 1968 SRT-101, they should be able to do the same on a modern
DSLR.

4) I'd say it's an 80% chance that it will be APS, not 24x36 sensor.
Note that they released new versions of DA limiteds, not FA limiteds.
I'll guess that the sensor will be 24-30 MP, and the per-pixel performance
will be at least a stop better than the K-5 (at 1.5 - 2 times the resolution).

I suspect that there will be non-retrofocus wide angle lenses, and the system
will have overall performance that will rival the D800 and 5DmkIII, at a
significantly lower price.

I think that the flagship, if APS will list for $2,000. If 24x36 will list
for $2,400.

5) It will be weather sealed, with in body shake reduction.

6) I think that if it has a mirror, they will add focus points, but not
enough of them.

7) I think that they will drop the K-5, but keep the K50 and 500.
If they do keep the K-5II, the list price would need to drop to
at, or below the cost of the K-50.

8) I'd say 80% chance that it will not have an anti-aliasing filter
over the sensor.

9) There will be much gnashing of teeth, rending of shirts and pulling
of hair because it will not be just a 24x36 version of the K-5 with 40
autofocus points. A lot of those people will at that point sell off
their pentax gear and buy a full frame canikon. Very few of them
will get photos that are technically superior to what they would have
gotten if they had stayed with Pentax.

Why not full frame? Look at the new u4/3 cameras. Their sensors are
half the area of APS, and the sensor performance of the top end
u 4/3 cameras are getting close to that of the K-5.

I think that the camera will likely be announced close to the beginning
of November (unless there is a big camera show before then), just in
time for the holiday wishlists.

PESO - The Photographers

2013-09-17 Thread Brian Walters

G'day all

At the rate I'm going it will be this time next year before I finish
working on the photos from the USA trip...

Here's a shot of my sons at the Grand Canyon in April.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1370864/PESO/slides/_IGP1545-K5-1peso.html

That's Jeff on the left with his Nikon D90 and Chris on the right with
his K20D.

As an aside, Chris got so sick of constantly setting up the tripod and
swapping lenses on and off the camera that he sold his K20 kit
(including a 10-17mm fisheye and 60-250mm zoom) and replaced the lot
with a Fuji X100S - reckons it's the best thing he's ever done.
Pentax loses another one.

Re: What's next?

2013-09-17 Thread Darren Addy
I think that Pentax is (over)due for a substantive refresh at the top
of its model line. If they are going to continue to support medium
format, I think that a 645DII is in the offing.

And I think that a higher megapixel sensor is needed (and coming) for
the flagship DSLR (still APS-C). I happen to believe it will be the
24.3MP sensor used in the Sony SLT-A77. Whatever they offer, I believe
that it will come in two versions, like the K-5II and the K-5IIs

I still believe that a full frame is in the offing, but I will be
surprised if it is among the cameras that will be announced yet THIS
year. I think that part of the complication is decisions over whether
it should be compatible (or CAN be compatible) with accessories like
the O-GPS1 (AstroTracer)

I know a lot of Pentax people would be happy just to have a high
quality Pentax AF teleconverter. Pentax has made its own job harder in
that department by not committing to SDM or the cheaper "screw drive"
AF.

As I said the other day, I would not be surprised to see the K-02
(K-01 brought back with EVF and tilting screen ALA X-5 technologies).

Regarding what he says about Pentax: Weakness = "kit lens"? I thought
that Pentax was considered one of the better kit lenses, according to
the reviewers back when I got my K200D. Even if it were true, that
seems a pretty dumb thing to have your choice based upon.

Very little reaction after I was recognized as the photographer and
explained the fisheye lens required me to go so close. They were doing their
duties of stretching/warming/practicing and I was doing my duty of shooting.
Very few words exchanged among us and then I went away shooting other people

Thought this might be interesting fodder for some. I find the
"analysis" lacking much depth however.

http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.asp?newsID=5404&news=what+brand+should+I+buy+into+market+anlysis

Regarding what he says about Pentax: Weakness = "kit lens"? I thought
that Pentax was considered one of the better kit lenses, according to
the reviewers back when I got my K200D. Even if it were true, that
seems a pretty dumb thing to have your choice based upon.

I don't see anything in your speculative description that is anything but a
minor tech tweek/upgrade. There is no way I can see a new APS-C body priced at
$800 more than the K-5iis unless they actually either made substantive real
massive improvements in AF speed and accuracy and frame rate and buffer
capacity, or they give us more color choices. ;-) A sensor with higher pixel
count would be a negative for me unless and until I am convinced that they
haven't sacrificed high-ISO image quality. Anything without an optical
viewfinder would be a huge negative and would put the camera in the $300-350
range for me.

Thanks Godfrey.
Perhaps this is the occasion to explain that some of those pictures are not
up to the level of others, but I had to supply the organization a report
covering the whole event.

Very little reaction after I was recognized as the photographer and

Very few words exchanged among us and then I went away shooting other people

Re: OT: speaking of computer tales of woe...

Well, I learned something. I didn't know Apple still had local
independent retailers.

When my 2009 iMac 24 required service twice in a row early in 2011,
my local genius-bar guy gave me a new iMac 27. I'm a genius-bar fan.

Well, I want to retract my negative comments of earlier today about the
Apple Store. I try to support local, small businesses as much as I can,
so I took my iMac 27" to a local Apple retailer/service instead of the
Apple Store, and had such a horrible experience with them that I walked
out with the computer under my arm rather than let them touch it.
Basically it was a Mac sales/service rep who hates Macs. I was told that
if a Mac breaks then you usually have to throw it out and buy a new one,
and they really didn't think they could fix my screen. When I tried to
buy a few accessories (like cables, a Superdrive and memory), nothing
was in stock and they wanted payment in advance before they would order
anything for me. The crowning touch came when another customer came in
and asked about Drobos. The rep said he had never heard of such a thing
and implied by his tone that the customer was talking through his hat. I
piped in at that point and told him that *I* knew what a Drobo was, as I
had learned all about them from this cool Pentax email list I'm
subscribed to! He did not like that, and I concluded that this guy knew
not only nothing about the Macs he was trying to sell, but also nothing
about computers in general.

So, in desperation I took my iMac to the Apple Store. This time I was
noticed right off and someone even carried the thing to the Genius Bar
for me. I had not made an appointment but they fit me in, did the
diagnostics and an estimate for the repair right off. It will be ready
for pick up by the end of the week. I told the guy I wanted a Superdrive
and some cables, and he said that because I'd had such bad luck with the
new computer and such a bad experience with the dealer that he was going
to GIVE me the Superdrive!

I walked out of there a very happy camper.

PESO - The Photographers

2013-09-17 Thread Bipin Gupta
I agree with you Rick when I saw the photo posted by Brian of his
children atop the Grand Canyon. Look at the last leg of the Tripod on
the ground. Absolutely thin and flimsy. And the wind can be pretty
gusty in those parts what with the depth and width of the Canyon
creating huge drafts.
That tripod is dangerous too. And a K20D with the 60-250 zoom sitting
atop that tripod will be unable to produce crisp photos of the picture
postcard beauty of the Grand Canyon.
Chris would have been better off getting a K-5IIs especially when
prices are dropping rock bottom.
That shot is very memorable for you Brian. Excellent composition and
capture too.
Regards.

Unless I'm missing something, they don't even provide information about photo

"zone focusing" differ from what I did when looking only at the
barrel of my lens and making those critical numbers line up for
maximum depth of field while shooting fast enough (shooting TRI-X or
with the digital camera set at F 8 and 3 meters ? )

Or were you juat nailing the writer for explaing that manual focusing

Camera Brand Pros & Cons

2013-09-17 Thread Bipin Gupta
Thought this might be interesting fodder for some. I find the
"analysis" lacking much depth however.

http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.asp?newsID=5404&news=what+brand+should+I+buy+into+market+analysis
A thought-less and absolutely generic article considering todays
advanced manufacturing techniques, computer aided designs, terrific
lens coatings and all kinds of exotic superior glass.
Almost all the manufacturers are as good as ever. It is just a choice
based on your childhood preferences or first buying choices as a
student. As a student I bought the (made in Japan) K1000 SE from
Oldens of New York on the 70s. And I stuck with Pentax even though I
still own a Leica Film SLR system, a Ricoh compact automatic film
camera, Panasonic standby digital P&S. I have also simultaneously
owned a Nikon FG and the Russian Kiev-19 that took Nikon lenses.
You then stick to that brand because of the inventory of lenses built
up over the years.
And that bit about the Pentax Kit Lens is nonsense. It IS the finest
Kit lens, especially the 18-55 ALII.
Regards.

They may have changed. They used to be the only place in town that dealt with
medium format - processing, printing, drum scans, etc. And they did specialty
work, e.g., the 3'x5' transparencies backlit for displays at the airport and in
commercial settings. The favorite lab for Hallmark artists and photographers
doing their own work away from their day job. If they do still take photo print
jobs, the quality would be as good as it gets.

Re: What's next?

2013-09-17 Thread John

Isn't there some big camera show in Germany in October/November?

On 9/17/2013 5:34 AM, Larry Colen wrote:

I'll second that. I've had very good results with them. The one time I
had a QC issue was with a 20 x 30 mounted and framed print. The print
was lifting from the backing and appeared rippled. They asked for a
picture so they could see the problem. Next day I had a brand new one
at my door, free, no shipping, and was told no need to return the
defective one. That was a fairly high priced item especially with next
day Fedex.

I received a 25% off discount code just today. SALE2013

You then stick to that brand because of the inventory of lenses built

Also, Pentax rarely announces new cameras at trade shows. New product
tends to be announced as soon as it's ready, whether that comes just
before, just after or nowhere near a photo trade show.

Yeah, but that was when Pentax was on its own or owned by Hoya. Ricoh

I don't think I made the term up. I'm pretty sure that I've heard

I didn't think you had - I was just thinking it might have been
a more recent term..

But I needed something to describe pre-focusing on a range of
distances, the zone in which what you want to photograph may
be in.

I used to read photo mags a lot in the 70's and 80's but I never
actually took any courses whatsoever in photography or printing or
what not.. Never even read the Ansel bible... so how exactly does
"zone focusing" differ from what I did when looking only at the
barrel of my lens and making those critical numbers line up for
maximum depth of field while shooting fast enough (shooting TRI-X or
with the digital camera set at F 8 and 3 meters ? )

That's pretty much it. You needed to do it a lot more with a
rangefinder because you couldn't focus it fast enough to get the shot.

I never had used a rangefinder.. The idea of having it set was that you
didn't have to lift the camera to your eye to get a shot - which would
tip off the subjects you were taking your photo. OR shooting, as I
said earlier, from a moving vehicle

Or were you juat nailing the writer for explaing that manual
focusing for street shooting was good and we all know that anyway?

I don't know why it was originally posted, but I ran into his
using "hyperfocal distance", which has a specific meaning. I.e.
zone focusing that just exactly extends to infinity, for zone
focusing, which doesn't extend to infinity. Kind of like using
Greenwich Village to refer to all of New York City.

I would say that you had to reverse that line to make that work :-)

I used the hyperfocal distance setting (in my sense of it) downward as
well.. so things would be in focus from very near to maybe 15 feet away.

ann

That's zone focusing, hyperfocal distance is related but different, in
that it's special.

I don't think I made the term up. I'm pretty sure that I've heard

But I needed something to describe pre-focusing on a range of
distances, the zone in which what you want to photograph may
be in.

It's a common term, and I would define it as you have done. You select an
aperture and a focus point. All that is within the DOF range is in the focus
zone.

Paul

Some cameras, even those that were moderately sophisticated, and fairly
expensive had only zone focusing, a number of mid to high end Polaroids
without rangefinders come immediately to mind.

Re: OT: Useful Photography Tip #68

2013-09-17 Thread P.J. Alling

I'm not going to be fair.

This guy doesn't deserve fair.

At the very least he should include a caveat that the f stop markings on
the distance scale are approximate and based on an acceptable CoC,
(circle of confusion), for 35mm film, which will lead to very different,
mostly Out of Focus results on APS-C and even more OOF on m4:3 sensor
cameras, so some modification of the settings is desirable, (say
stopping down an additional 1 1/2 stops for APS-C and 2 stops for 4/3
and m43 cameras).

There was that so hard? Now if I were writing for his audience, I'd
probably leave out any mention of CoC, except as a footnote, and
describe stopping up and down effects in a bit more detail

He also completely missed the difference between using hyperfocal
distance and zone focusing, which deserves an explanation and
examination based on the subject matter.

He manages to put so much fail into just a few short paragraphs that the
mind boggles. Yet, there is no excuse for it. If this were a newspaper
I could understand space constraints, but in a blog post a few well
written words of explanation don't take up enough space to worry about.

Good point! The Theta was recently announced:

The Ricoh GR was announced in April. Can't see any pattern.

I think the new camera will be 24MP APS-C. Probably same sensor as SLT-A77.
- next version of SAFOX
- more AF points
- new image processor

They seem to be getting less precise in their announcements. Remember the
spring announcement of the new 360 and 540 flashes? Followed up in August with
an "available in September" notice? The Ricoh site has them available for
preorder. The B&H site has them available for preorder. The Adorama site has
them available now. I didn't believe Adorama, called, pushed for verification
that they had them in stock. Finally got an admission that they don't have them
in yet, are expecting availability maybe in October. I don't know if it is a
production or a supply-chain issue, but I preferred it when an "available in x
month" notice was usually accurate.

Re: What's next?

2013-09-17 Thread P.J. Alling
I already predicted what I expected to see last spring, but what the
heck, I expect that Ricoh will announce, a 24mp camera either a K-3 with
a FF frame with K-5II specifications in all other ways, or a 24mp APS-C
K-5III with even more improved focusing, and a nod to improving the
flash system. I have no idea what the FF camera will look like but I'm
rather hoping this.

I think everyone who sees an improved mirrorless camera say a K-02 with
an actual EVF, is whistling in the wind. Pentax is going to build on Q
line and that's where Pentax mirrorless will stay for the time being.

Pentax practically invented the modern unibody eye level SLR with the
instant return mirror, and pentaprism. They see themselves as an
optical house, (and I doubt that's changed now that they're a division
of Ricoh) and there are now three levels of Pentax DSLR all of them
share the same 100% coverage optical viewfinder which is a selling point
I seldom see mentioned. Abandoning the Pentaprism would be like
abandoning their soul.

If against all odds Ricoh actually releases three new cameras in the
coming months, (well five since yes I agree that there will both plain
vanilla versions and extra sexy without AA filters and maybe multiple
colors just to be annoying). I expect that there might be an announced
645D II with a much higher pixel count and an almost FF 645 sensor, as
well as the two afore mentioned cameras.

There's some argument that that could be made that the APS-C cameras
might have a 20mp sensor instead of a 24mp. Sony has a very nice 20mp
Exmor sensor that Pentax could use, but using the same image in pixels
probably would allow co-development of both hardware and firmware
between the FF and APS-C bodies. Pentax is known for this kind of
development. I expect that using the same Pentaprism in all their APS-C
bodies also saves quite a bit of money in manufacture.

On 9/17/2013 5:34 AM, Larry Colen wrote:

Prices on the K-5 II are plummeting. I think that we are getting pretty

1) When you look at cameras that Ricoh and Pentax have produced lately:

cameras where the company is not afraid to take a chance on something
different. I would be very surprised if the next camera is a "me too"

2) Each of the recent Pentax bodies has interesting mirrorless features.

3) Mirror or mirroless, it will keep the K-mount. They just updated the

departure in camera mount seems out of character.

Their sensors are
half the area of APS, and the sensor performance of the top end
u

Based on their practice from the last few years, I expect that they will
announce a major new camera just after the Christmas buying season.

Isn't there some big camera show in Germany in October/November?

There's Photokina in September, but it's every other year, and this ain't it.

Also, Pentax rarely announces new cameras at trade shows. New product
tends to be announced as soon as it's ready, whether that comes just
before, just after or nowhere near a photo trade show.

It is interesting that I had to go as high as ISO 30,000 trying to
"freeze"

the action enough for getting the jump on last picture.

Yeah, like anyone from PDML is going to let the alcohol dry out in an
airtight container for three months.

I like them but wouldn't call them "the most detailed". Electron
microscopy would deserve that title.

Also, I would think that this page is more of a PDML remit.
