OT: Image transfers on wood
I was talking to someone a while back who does image transfers on wood using laser jet prints and gel medium. Well, naturally enough, I got to thinking it might be fun to try that with one of my images on a guitar -- either ordering a decent DIY electric kit, or taking the finish off an old, beat-up, but otherwise good, guitar and replacing it with a photo and refinishing it. I was wondering if anyone on the list had any experience with those kinds of transfers and/or whether anyone might know of any issues I'd run into in the finishing process (applying stains, clear coat, lacquer, varnish, what-have-you). I think it could potentially be a fun photographic project that would produce a nice custom (or keepsake, if you will) guitar if done well. But, I'd hate to get almost done and discover that it just won't work. I kind of like the idea of the challenge of composing and rendering a good image for that purpose, and I assume K-5 produces files suitable for use at that size (say a Fender Telecaster-style body). Anybody have any thoughts? -- Walt -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: K-3 review as seen through the eyes of the PF
Bill, it is purely subjective. I have suffered enough grief from K-7's sensor and frankly, the way Pentax treats highlights in their RAW files seems to be rather unforgiving compared with those of Ricoh GXR (any module with 12MP sensor). So, I don't want to take any chances. That's quite nice, Don. I like how you were able to incorporate some of the tree into the background, which is a much more interesting scene than the typical bird on a branch against an open sky that I see so much. This has a warm and comfortable look to it. On my display, it renders with a slight magenta cast. That could be easily dialed out. Re: K-3 review as seen through the eyes of the PF
The info is right there in the review. In short, there is more info to recover in the SHADOW areas of the K-5/ii/iis than the K-3. As we all know, if you blow out highlights, that info is just GONE. I'm with Boris on the importance of dynamic range and completely disagree with the point of view that 6 stops of dynamic range is all one needs for most scenes. I think you are confusing the dynamic range of the OUTPUT (like a JPEG on a monitor) with the usefulness of the dynamic range in the RAW that you will use to GENERATE the output file (to monitor or print). It is always useful to have more info to draw from in the source RAW. PentaxForums: fanboy or doom and gloom, I wish you guys would make up your minds. I think it is important to know how to evaluate information, regardless of the source. I think you are confusing the dynamic range of the OUTPUT (like a JPEG on a monitor) with the usefulness of the dynamic range in the RAW that you will use to GENERATE the output file (to monitor or print). It is always useful to have more info to draw from in the source RAW. What you seem to be confusing is the number six, which is the bit depth of most monitors with 6 stops, which is the outside dynamic range of most any scene you might care to photograph. I don't know how long you have been involved in photography, I don't know if you have ever shot a roll of film in your life, but colour slide film at best had a 5 to 6 stop range, colour print film about a 7 stop range, and if you were careful, BW could be coaxed into a 14 stop range, though 8-10 stops was more or less what one would get with conventional Zone System exposure and development. Using non specialized development, BW was limited to about 8 stops. Interestingly, we were able to make film work, and work well even with this very limited DR of well under 10 stops. The reason for this is because the DR of most scenes fits into a 6 stop range. You can believe this or not, or you could do something smart and take a color blind light meter out and measure some scenes to see what you come up with. And then come back and tell us why 14.5 stops is so much more necessary than 13.5 stops. We got great shots on film, so why would anybody need anything that performs better than it? Maybe film saturates differently than digital sensors. I could never afford to to much serious photography with film, so I'm not well versed at how it handles at the edges of the performance envelope. Have you ever photographed a musician on stage and tried to keep the color in the gelled stage lights? That's a case where I want more dynamic range than the K-5 can give me. Likewise I do a lot of photography at light, or in dark rooms, with well lit corners, and even with 14 stops of DR, I need more. But, I'm not really getting those 14 stops, because I have to push the ISO much harder. Shooting ISO 6400, those 14 stops become a lot closer to 8 or 9. Every aspect of camera performance is a compromise with some other aspect (light, fast, or cheap, pick any two). A landscape photographer won't care about fast autofocus, but will care about resolution. Someone photographing for a magazine probably doesn't need more than about 10MP of resolution (if that), but might want as high of a clean ISO as they can get. A sports photographer needs fast autofocus, and possibly accurate auto exposure. A 5 foot tall woman with tendonitis might want a small light camera that she can hold without getting tired, carry in her purse and reach the buttons, while a 6'3 man might need a large camera that has room for more than three of his fingers. For some people, who are losing photos because one aspect isn't good enough, every improvement will make a difference on the photos that are keepers. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com http://red4est.com/lrc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

When you look at the details it's no more a Nikkormat or FM which it superficially resembles than an OM-D is a classic OM-1/2/3/4. If it were not a modern camera, it would not sell. To my eye, it looks bloated and the bevy of dials and buttons makes it look overly complicated. I reserve judgment until I see one in the flesh. :-) I don't know what pure photography was supposed to be, but if the sensor is good and the controls work well, and it takes my Nikkor 50/1.2 AI-S and Nikkor-H 85/1.8 Pre-AI allowing metering, it might present some interest for me. K-5 Highlight save for Boris
I don't know that this proves anything. But Boris asked to see these in support of my contention that I have been able to salvage blown out highlights on K-5 RAW files. Shot this pic at high noon from a ladder with the sun overhead. Didn't bother to think that the dash was shaded and the almost white seats were ablaze with light. Don't know what the difference was in stops, but it had to be considerable, probably in excess of 14. In any case I had to work with the RAW rendering and subsequent dodging and burning, but I salvaged a pic that ended up in the magazine. A reshoot was not in the cards, as the car and its owner were long gone before I saw how bad I had failed here. One of these id the RAW opened with the default settings and saved as a jpeg. The other is the tweaked final image. That's the only thing that I can picture. If someone has an alternative explanation, I'm all ears. Yeah, there's gaps around the mirror. If you take the lens off and fire a long exposure, and hold a flashlight to the viewfinder, you can see quite a bit of light getting past the edges of the mirror (at least on the K-5 II). The biggest streak of light was at the bottom of the photograph, which would correspond to the top edge of the sensor (due to the inverted image). I would guess that comes from light getting past the mirror along the back edge (closest to the sensor) and hitting the sensor pretty directly. Control of scattered light is a pretty big factor in things like telescope design. The light seal between mirror and screen is never perfect, and of course on long exposures we tend to not be covering the viewfinder with our eye, so more light gets in through the finder anyway. Re: K-5 Highlight save for Boris
That's a good example, Paul. Running the PS eye dropper over the seats almost all pixels have channel values of less than 255 - they are close, above 250, but not 100% blown out. As you demonstrate, even that little bit of a difference make it possible to salvage the highlights. If all three channels were at 255 all that could be done would be to make the pure white a shade of grey. (If you clip the histogram in the levels tool so the seats are pegged at 255-255-255 (8 bit per channel file, of course) recovery is then impossible.) Looking in levels again - there really is very little clipping of the histogram at either the high end or low end, so you actually nailed the shot well enough to have a recoverable image. Mark On 11/13/2013 3:29 PM, Paul Stenquist wrote: I don't know that this proves anything. But Boris asked to see these in support of my contention that I have been able to salvage blown out highlights on K-5 RAW files. Shot this pic at high noon from a ladder with the sun overhead. Don't know what the difference was in stops, but it had to be considerable, probably in excess of 14. In any case I had to work with the RAW rendering and subsequent dodging and burning, but I salvaged a pic that ended up in the magazine. I like how you were able to incorporate some of the tree into the background, which is a much more interesting scene than the typical bird on a branch against an open sky that I see so much. This has a warm and comfortable look to it. On my display, it renders with a slight magenta cast. That could be easily dialed out. I envisioned using the windows in this space ever since I first encountered them. So you could say this shot was over two years in the making. :-) Ann, I know you're not big on the posed studio shots so I especially appreciate your appreciation. More than half the shots I got in this session were in natural light before we switched to posed under flash, so there are quite a few more like this coming. This one almost exhausts the supply of Safe For Work ones though. ;-) On Wed, Nov 13, 2013 at 8:15 PM, Ann Sanfedele ann...@nyc.rr.com wrote: Window light always a good thing... much nicer than studio lighting and like the whole thing - not at all what I expected. ann On 11/13/2013 16:01, Bruce Walker wrote: From a creative shoot with photographer-turned-alt-model Alina Antoniou.
