Three images.

The pano is stitched from five or six exposures, and covers an angle
somewhere between 120 and 150 degrees horizontally.

The Devil's Golf Course is perhaps the most uninviting environment I've
ever tried to photograph in. I thought salt crystals would be brittle,

Salt Plain is excellent, lots of detail, it's like I'm standing there.

Badwater has a nice composition, the reflection of the mountains holds
my interest. It's strange to see vegetation nearby, I thought the
water was much too salty around there.

I don't get the Devil's Golf Course, never been there and don't know

An unexpected bonus for me of working in creative studio settings is
getting to know really interesting people, like this young woman who I

Re: Two Upgrade Questions

2013-11-21 Thread Boris Liberman
Collin, here are my two totally uneducated cents:

1. The difference between the coatings will probably be all but
insignificant. I think it is more a marketing exercise that true
technology. That is not to say that they've just renamed the SMC. They
did change the coatings, but SMC is extremely good as it is.

2. No clue here. I assume it be quiet (as opposed to silent) and more
reliable than SDM, but please notice - I'm assuming.

Probably, who knows.

Any thoughts on the new in-lens DC AF solution?Might be quieter than the
standard and more reliable than SDM.

I bought the 18-135 with my K3. It's fast enough, and quiet. I suspect
that DC and SDM are pretty much the same thing, except DC doesn't have
the bad smell (yet) that SDM developed.

I suspect that whatever the in lens AF is now, we are past the SDM problems.

PESOs Grace Tonight

2013-11-21 Thread Paul Stenquist
Got a few grab shots of Grace in the kitchen when she came home tonight. All
with the K-3 and DA* 16-50. All at ISO 6400, f4.5, 1/1506h, 50 mm. Some
cropping, minimal sharpening. Shot in AWB mode. I have it set to retain some
warmth in tungsten light. Looked a bit warm to me, so I set white balance when
converting the RAWs.

It has occurred to me that with less sharpening required, low light photos with
the K-3 may be superior to those of the K-5.

Alan,
It was a comment partly in jest. :-)

As a teacher, I find most of my students preoccupied in the lessons. In
the
teachers' study room there is an eerie atmosphere while the games are on.
While it has not yet happened where I work, some schools have had to shut
out certain streaming services from the local firewalls to prevent the
network from overload. It's quite a buzz this guy has stirred up here in
the
Frostpit.

As a former amateur chess player (no match for Boris, tho), I'm sucked in
too. :-)

Three images.

The pano is stitched from five or six exposures, and covers an angle

Is Pentax/Ricoh upgrading the whole line, over time, to the new HD coatings?
I wonder how long this might take.

Any thoughts on the new in-lens DC AF solution?Might be quieter than the

Yes, Jan, it does and has for several versions now. It includes auto
aligning and creates layer masks so you can manually tweak the results
to your liking. I've used it in food photography to get a large cake

Paul,

It works the same in Lightroom as it does in the Camera Raw plugin. I'm running
PS CS 5.1 with Camera Raw 6.7, but I'm sure it's the same with later versions.

You go to the Detail panel in Camera Raw, hold the Option key down, and click
on any of the Amount, Radius, Detail, or Masking sliders. Keeping the Option
key held down, slide the slider around. You'll see the effect of the adjustment
against a high-pass filtered gray backdrop. If you lift off the Option key, the
view returns to normal, then you can press it again (mouse button still down on
the slider) to return to the high-pass filtered view.

PESO: alternate stacking approach

2013-11-21 Thread Stan Halpin
You've seen Bill's lovely flower; from me you get dead leaves.

Bill did adjustments to his 16 images in Camera Raw and then sent them to
Photoshop to merge layers.
I sent my 10 images to Helicon Focus, then did adjustments on the output merged
image. (Using LR4)
Bill used a bellows and 100mm macro.
I used the 35mm macro.
Bill's subject had a clear three-dimensional quality to it.
My subject probably has about the same depth but the gradations from near to
far are a bit more subtle.

I used Liveview and focus peaking to do the successive image slices through the
subject and I believe Bill did the same.

So, what you see here is not in any sense a replication of Bill's work, but
rather an independent totally different example of this focus stacking business.

I uploaded 4 images:

First, a 6016x4000 image downsized to 2400xwhatever. This is the full stack of
10 images.
Full Stack: http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p155717848/e387e914

Next, the "best" single image from the series, same dimensions as above.
Single image: http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p155717848/e3dba3814

Next a 1-to-1 crop of the stacked image:
1024x735 portion of full stack:
http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p155717848/e2015d44d

And then a 1311x1017 1-to-1 crop of the single image.
1311x1017 portion of single image:
http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p155717848/e24f2cbe0

Note that once you've followed the first link, click on the image for a larger
view. From there, a right-arrows takes you to the next, left-arow brings you
back etc. so you can do comparisons more easily.
Also note that I applied the same adjustments to the single image that I had
previously arrived at for the stacked image.

Re: Sharpening Radius?

2013-11-21 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The technique doesn't work with the post-raw-conversion RGB composite tools,
only in the raw conversion plug-in.

Doing overall input sharpening is generally better performed on the raw data as
there is more overhead and more data to work with then. The RGB tools are best
used for creative and output sharpening.

Thank you, Larry!

I agree it's a bit dark. It's the model's edit (she's a photographer
and graphic designer too) and she wanted a pseudo Polaroid look. Other
than colour grading she did nothing else to it as far as I can see. It
would be a bit dark because in order to accomplish the handstand she
had to move to the right of my light setup where I had an overhead
gridded softbox.

Hmm, anything special? Does Photoshop directly support focus-stacking somehow?

In Camera Raw, select all the images you want to work with and open
them. Do whatever adjustments you want, but don't import them into
Photoshop, just click done. This locks the adjustments.

Again in Camera Raw, go to tools/ photoshop/ open as layers .
The files will all be opened as layers of a single image, rather than as
discreet images.
Select all the layers, and Edit/auto align. Depending on the number of
layers, how big the open file is and how fast your computer is, this
might take a while.
After the machine has chewed through that, Edit/auto blend layers.
Again, you will get to sit and watch your machine churn through the
images, and then, like magic, you have one layer on top that has
everything in focus.

Flatten image and your done.

I missed the focus in a couple of areas anyway, so I decided to run it through
Portraiture/ Glamour for kicks. See if I could make it into art.

Re: PESO: alternate stacking approach

2013-11-21 Thread Bill

On 21/11/2013 8:20 PM, Stan Halpin wrote:

You've seen Bill's lovely flower; from me you get dead leaves.

Bill did adjustments to his 16 images in Camera Raw and then sent
them to Photoshop to merge layers. I sent my 10 images to Helicon
Focus, then did adjustments on the output merged image. (Using LR4)
Bill used a bellows and 100mm macro. I used the 35mm macro. Bill's
subject had a clear three-dimensional quality to it. My subject
probably has about the same depth but the gradations from near to far
are a bit more subtle.

I used Liveview and focus peaking to do the successive image slices
through the subject and I believe Bill did the same.

So, what you see here is not in any sense a replication of Bill's
work, but rather an independent totally different example of this
focus stacking business.

I uploaded 4 images:

First, a 6016x4000 image downsized to 2400xwhatever. This is the full
stack of 10 images. Full Stack:
http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p155717848/e387e914

Next, the "best" single image from the series, same dimensions as
above. Single image:
http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p155717848/e3dba3814

Next a 1-to-1 crop of the stacked image: 1024x735 portion of full
stack: http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p155717848/e2015d44d

And then a 1311x1017 1-to-1 crop of the single image. 1311x1017
portion of single image:
http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p155717848/e24f2cbe0

Note that once you've followed the first link, click on the image for
a larger view. From there, a right-arrows takes you to the next,
left-arow brings you back etc. so you can do comparisons more
easily. Also note that I applied the same adjustments to the single
image that I had previously arrived at for the stacked image.

Three images.

The pano is stitched from five or six exposures, and covers an angle

The Devil's Golf Course is perhaps the most uninviting environment

I thought I would ask the gurus of digital processing here on PDML about

the principle is to sharpen the details you actually want to output

these days i usually do it seat of the pants — since i rarely print i simply
zoom to the screen size i have in mind and work from there by eye; if i later
export the image at a different size, i redo the sharpening

for print, in my prepress days, we would first resample the image to the
intended output (at a ppi double the halftone lpi), then it would still be a
judgment call based on the image; here is a decent article that expands on that

PENTAX (RICOH) BACK IN SA

2013-11-21 Thread Alan C
Pentax products have always been available in SA through the efforts of a
couple of maverick importers but at almost twice the US price. A K3 body
will set you back the equiv. of $2000. Nevertheless, there are still buyers!

Now, New Teltron, the franchisor of the Foto First labs around the country
which concentrates on Fuji products, has announced that it is the official
importer of Pentax (Ricoh) products. It seems they are going to slowly build
up the range available and have started with a K500 kit promotion at a
little over $600. A couple of DA lenses & a range of binoculars are also
available. It will be interesting to see if they can make inroads against
Fuji, Canon & Nikon which are very strong here.

Re: PESO - Bored Doorman

2013-11-21 Thread John

Re: OT - Damn Carlsen

2013-11-21 Thread Subash Jeyan
it's not my cup of tea either though the venue of the matches are just
about 10 minutes' drive from both where i live and from where i work.
Carlsen is pretty popular here too and has generated a lot of positive
press. looks like all that distraction will be worth it... :)

regards, subash
