Re: PESO - Watch the Tracks

I'm liking this shot, Frank. There is something about it that really catches
my attention. I don't really see the tracks you are talking about - I guess
the snow covered them up. Good work.

Not to start a Holy War or anything, but I gotta tell you, as a Mac
guy since 1996 (no, wait, that was my 2nd Mac - an LC DOS
Compatible)... err, since '88 I've been a Mac guy. Wife still has a
Powerbook and I have several old Macs moldering in the basement. But I
built my own computer and it is a AMD 64-bit Windows 7 machine and I
have no complaints. Windows 7 is the most "Mac-like" Microsloth OS yet
and I really like it. I can dual boot it with Ubuntu (but virtually
never do). I've also got a 64 bit Win7 machine at work.

I'll be in the market for a decent laptop soon to take out and run the
autoguider with a telescope, and I will probably be looking at
something refurb from NewEgg where I can spend $300 bucks or so and
get something that will do the job. The extra money saved over buying
a newish Mac will be spent on astro equipment or more Pentax glass or

With decent prophylactics for your WIndows machine (Microsoft Security

I think I have to agree with you, Mark.

Without the guitar she has an awkward posture. It just doesn't feel right to me.

Of course there's not enough guitar for a nicely balanced composition.

So I like with guitar best but ultimately neither is a great shot.

Thanks to all for your comments and thanks to all who looked.

They haven't yet measured the DA* 50-135/2.8, the DA* 60-250/4, or any

PESO - Watch the Tracks

2014-01-09 Thread knarf
Probably the worst part of cycling on snowy days in Toronto is navigating the
streetcar (tram) tracks that are everywhere downtown. The snow obscures them
and makes them particularly slippery. You can see them by the wheel of the car
in the foreground:

 http://mondociclismo.blogspot.ca/2014/01/watch-tracks.html?m=1

If our cyclist Chris has to swerve around an illegally parked car those tracks
will have him down in an instant.

A slice o' winter couriering fun!

Comments welcome.

Re: PESO Misty days

For me, the issue with this shot is that it is just not quite enough...there
needs to be something more to push it beyond ordinary. Either more mist or
some interesting filtered light or a change in perspective to really draw me

'not quite there' shots that I have taken. But it is the shooting and learning

It's not the camera

2014-01-09 Thread Larry Colen
Have you ever noticed that the more money someone has invested in photo
gear, the more likely they are to say "It's not the camera, it's the
photographer"?

So, if it's not the camera, now that K-3 prices have dropped a bit,
why do I want a K-3 so badly? It's not like I'll get any better photos.

Seriously though, I really am planning on waiting to see what the next
thing they have in store is before committing.

On the subject of spending money on gear, I ended up returning my 13"
macbook pro. It turns out that the screen was just too small for
comfortably editing photos. It turns out that there are three versions
of the 15" available (at least refurbbed).

1) The retina screen is the only one available at stores. You lose a
firewire port, but gain a second thunderbolt port. You lose the
optical drive and get an HDMI port.
The big drawback, other than cost, is that the memory is soldered in,
so you pay the apple tax on RAM, since you can't upgrade on your own.

2) Low res 1440x900 pixels

3) High res 1680x1050, this seems to be the one to get, but the
inexpensive ones seem to be gone from the apple store as of today,
all of the ones left charge the apple tax on memory and drive.

Re: OT - 'The Photographer's Eye'

2014-01-09 Thread Bob W
1971. I didn't know there was another edition.

Photo books are an interesting collectible. I have some which I bought for
nothing because I Iike the pictures, but the books are now worth a fortune. I
can't remember what I paid for it, which means it probably wasn't much, but I
have a copy of 'A Day Off' by Tony Ray-Jones, and they are offered for
shitloads of money now. I also have a copy of the 1st edition of Vietnam, Inc.,
which Philip Jones Griffiths signed for me. I have quite a few others too which
are now quite valuable. On the day I win the lottery I will also find a
like-new copy of Images à la sauvette, signed, with dust jacket, for about a
tenner. I used to spend a lot of time with it when I worked at the British
Library.

They're not an investment for me, because I want the books, not the money, but
photo books are very enjoyable things.

PESO Misty days

2014-01-09 Thread Ciprian Dorin Craciun
It seems that for the last few days my town was shrouded in a
thick mist, especially in the afternoon... (A phenomenon which isn't
that usual so many days in a row...)

However, because I kind of like the overall atmosphere, I've tried
to catch it with my camera (a larger variant is available in the same
folder):

http://data.volution.ro/ciprian/bdf753de58c560bc/0cb3ba63549b8029/variant-a--x800.jpg

But I'm uncertain of my choices and I would love some feedback:

* Does the large tree trunk on the left work as a foreground?
I've tried to use it both to show how the visibility degrades as you
go deeper into the scene; plus together with the next tree on the
right, to frame the narrow path.

* Then I've chosen to reduce the saturation, so that only hints of
green and brown (from the leaves) remain visible.

Thanks for the comments,
Ciprian.

P.S.: The picture was taken with my old Fuji S5200 at ISO 100,
thus please ignore the noise and lack of sharpness.

Thanks for the recommendation, Bob.
Is yours the 1971 or 1977 edition? (Wonder how much difference between them).
In any event, I just scored a First Edition hardcover for under $24,
shipped. The other two being offered were significantly higher.
Looking forward to getting it. If, by some odd chance, I don't
consider it a keeper it looks like I can make a little profit on it.

I like to recommend Photo Design by Harald Mante, although I suspect it's

2014-01-09 Thread Ken Waller

Just finished an interesting read - The Photographer's Eye by Michael
Freeman.

An excellent read about subtle and not so subtle elements involved in the
composition of a photographic image.

"..how you build a picture, what a picture consists of, how shapes are
related to each other, how spaces are filled, how the whole thing must have
a kind of unity."

While I've collected alot of ideas, over my years in photography, about
compositions, I learned alot from this book about things I didn't know or

With frigid temperatures for the last few days, no one has ventured out on our
deck since the big snowfall. This morning the sun came out, so I opened the
door and snapped a pic. (I have the flu, so there’s no way I’m going out there
in the snow.) I metered to prevent clipping of the highlights but in rendering
I pushed it up a wee bit so some of the very brightest highlights are clipped.
Looked better that way. Note the bird tracks to the right of frame. i suspect a
hungry critter who is used to finding a few bits on the deck was searching.

K-3 with DA 17-40/4. The lens, by the way is on loan from Pentax. I have to
shoot the Detroit auto show for the Times on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. My DA*
16-50 is still at CRIS so the Ricoh marketing people sent me the 17-70 and a DA
16-45. I’ll probably use the 17-70, since the extra reach will be more
beneficial than the small amount of extra room at the wide end.

People who've said that type of thing to me seem to be suggesting that their
'living in the moment' is some sort of poetic experience unavailable to the
sort of brutish clod who would soil the moment by taking photographs. Of
course, it would be ok to sketch a water-colour, provided you wore a smock.
It's some sort of hangover from teenage romanticism.

An excellent read about subtle and not so subtle elements involved in the
composition of a photographic image.

While I've collected alot of ideas, over my years in photography, about
compositions, I learned alot from this book about things I didn't know or

Re: PESO Undisturbed

2014-01-09 Thread Ken Waller

Very well rendered.

...but in rendering I pushed it up a wee bit so some of the very brightest
highlights are clipped. Looked better that way.

I need to keep that in mind as I usually just go 'mechanical' with the
histogram in rendering during the optimization of the image from RAW.
Mechanical = no clipping w/o regard to actual image.

With frigid temperatures for the last few days, no one has ventured out on
our deck since the big snowfall. This morning the sun came out, so I opened
the door and snapped a pic. (I have the flu, so there’s no way I’m going out
there in the snow.) I metered to prevent clipping of the highlights but in
rendering I pushed it up a wee bit so some of the very brightest highlights
are clipped. Looked better that way. Note the bird tracks to the right of
frame. i suspect a hungry critter who is used to finding a few bits on the
deck was searching.

K-3 with DA 17-40/4. The lens, by the way is on loan from Pentax. I have to
shoot the Detroit auto show for the Times on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. My
DA* 16-50 is still at CRIS so the Ricoh marketing people sent me the 17-70
and a DA 16-45. I’ll probably use the 17-70, since the extra reach will be
more beneficial than the small amount of extra room at the wide end.

Ok , here goes..
given the order they are in. The cyclist going by the hotel is a nice
slice of city life - though kinda bland to me. The one with the strong
shadows would work well except for the large shadow on the left.. yet
cropping that out alone leaves some imbalance - might want to play
around with various crops - certainly worth the effort - nice mood
and ironic juxtapositioning:-) Noting Locust street sign.

I really like the rest - except the last one is a bit too light.
29, 30, 31 - just perfect, IMHO. although I don't know if what
grabbed you about them is that same as what grabs me - which is the
Brave New Worldishness - the lack of humanity in those scenes..
the antiseptic atmosphere. The loneliness conveyed in the one with
the man and boy on the escalator.

The last one just repeats the theme but not quite as well as the others
do , for me. not sure why..

Now this is one time when I appreciated flicker more than smugmug.
Obviously you have shifted from "legacy" to "new" smugmug - don't like
your choices here for presentation - those oversized thumbnails , the
journal style instead of an index page, and the slideshow didn't run
properly on XP.. I'm seeing how much I'll have to struggle with smugmug
to facilitate the look I ant for my stuff -which is somewhere between
what I have now and what I think of as ideal..

Hope this is of some use

Don, in this type of architectural/street I look for simplicity, so
for me the strongest two are -29 and -30. -30 is pretty cool.

Were it my choice, I would reframe/crop -29 to eliminate the dark
ceiling -- ie focussing on almost entirely white with lines & curves.
(But I think it would require a reshoot to be most effective: backing
up and moving to the left; do you see what I mean? Frame in as much
escalator and wall as you can.)

I think that the problem that the XKCD author is highlighting is the
problem of people who, often in an effort to feel better about

Re: PESO: Eye on the Ball

2014-01-09 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Attila.

Malamutes have a heavy double coat: a soft, furry inner coat of short
hair and an overcoat of longer, heavier weather-resistant hair. They
also have hair between their toes to keep the paws warm. The official
AKC breed standard state they they should be "playful on invitation."
We have found that to mean the dog's invitation, not the owner's.
When he wants to go out to play, he will find one of his toys and
throw it at me, hoping I will get the idea.

I like 30 and 32 for the nice geometry, but 32 looks too bright.

Very nice, the sense of huge space comes through well. I also like the
light on the walls.

Thanks for the heads up! What is surprising to me is that DA 16-45/4
ranks higher than DA* 16-50/2.8. And they haven't tested the Sigma
18-35/1.8 which got a lot of attention from other sites.
