Hi Tim: I have rather limited experience with the 16-50, I was given one
to use by Pentax Canada to use for a few days prior to it's release. I
found it to be kind of big, kind of awkward, but optically very good. I
didn't like the plastic finish, but that doesn't speak to anything
beyond my questionable sense of esthetics.
My understanding is that it is still having problems wit the SDM motors
to this day.

I bought one of the 20-40mm lenses and in many respects I like it, in
some respects I don't like it. It's not huge, but it is a chunky lens.
If one looks at the specifications, it is about the same size as the
31mm lens, but the specs don't tell the whole story. The 31mm lens
flares out quite a bit at the front, where the lens diameter measurement
is taken, but it tapers back quite a bit less than a quarter of the way
back. The reality is, it is a much smaller lens than the specifications
imply.

The 20-40 doesn't taper, it's just a biggish lens.
I like the finish of the 20-40, and the optical qualities are superb,
and in keeping with the Limited optics. It has a new and improved AF
motor, apparently not SDM, so hopefully it will be more reliable than
the 16-60.

Having said that, I don't like mine enough to actually use it, and am
considering selling it.

2014-06-13 Thread Zos Xavius
I finally bought myself a 17-70 and I think its superb. If you can
forgo the f2.8 I think its totally the way to go. It has some caveats,
but nothing really deal breaking for me. Its also far sharper wide
open (f4 of course) compared to the 16-50. The extra 20mm or reach is
extremely handy for head shots and landscapes are usable at 70mm too.

 The 20-40 doesn't taper, it's just a biggish lens.
I like the finish of the 20-40, and the optical qualities are superb, and in
keeping with the Limited optics. It has a new and improved AF motor,
apparently not SDM, so hopefully it will be more reliable than the 16-60.

Having said that, I don't like mine enough to actually use it, and am
 considering selling it.

Re: DA* 16-50 vs DA Ltd 20-40? You decide guys

2014-06-13 Thread Mark Roberts
I haven't tried the 20-40, much as I'd like to, but I think your
choice comes down to whether you can put up with the additional size
and weight of the 16-50 — it's wider at the wide end and longer at the
long end and faster beyond 20mm. As a working tool that makes it the
clear choice for someone who has to choose between these two lenses...
*unless* the size/weight factor is important. I suppose the 20-40
could possibly be better optically than the 16-50 but I can't imagine
there's enough of a difference to get worked up about: The 16-50 is
one of the best lenses I've ever used.

Downsides of the 16-50 are the more plasticky feel of the
construction (though mine's been kicked around extensively for years
without a hiccup, so I don't see any durability issue) and the larger
77mm filter size.

By the way: If I had money to burn I'd buy the 20-40 Limited in a
heartbeat, even though I have the DA 16-50. The Limited would make an
excellent middle lens to use in a 3-lens travel kit (with the DA 12-24
and the 55-300).

Steve,

I might be wrong, but to set up an iCloud e-mail account you have to own
(use?) one of the internet-connected Apple devices.
An assumption that all people have them might not be true.
E.g. in my family, the only Apple-made device is an iPod-nano (Gen. 2 or
3?) that is used as a compact source of music for my little daughter.

I don't hate Apple devices, I don't even have any...
(... except for a tiny iPod-nano [Gen. 3] that was given as a gift at
my wife's previous work.)

Actually, I came close to having an Apple ID when I bought iphones for
my brother. The moron (aka personal Apple consultant) who did the
sales over the phone has enabled their e-mail spam to be delivered to
the e-mail account that was used to receive the receipt for the
purchase. Everybody I spoke to at the Apple support told me that they
cannot disable it, and the only way to do that is to actually activate
the Apple online account (from the phone [that I don't have]) or
possibly on the web) and to change the e-mail preferences buried in it.

Instead, I set it so that, all those messages from Apple are bounced
to the person with the title Apple Senior iOS Technical Support
who told me that. Apple support need to enjoy Apple experience.

To be fair, in general, I think Apple provides a good service for the
average mass customer, and that's why they are praised and loved.
If your needs are different from their vision, you may have
many problems with that. I am anything but the standard user.

In my other trials tribulations I must have missed the
shadow-under-the-nose controversy.

But, if you're going for a George Hurrell look, your model is going to
have to put on a LOT more makeup you're going to need to retouch the
freckles on her arms neckline.

And I think for a George Hurrell look that shadow should be a bit more
pronounced.

For my own taste, I'd retouch the freckles unless the model specifically
asked that they be left. And I'd try to tone down the background around
her right forearm the stool.

I see you compare the size of the 20-40 with the 31 Bill. That's a
zoom compared to a prime. I see it more as a compact zoom. Take a look
at the top picture here comparing it to the kit lens.
http://www.pentaxforums.com/reviews/hd-pentax-da-20-40mm-limited/construction-and-handling.html
It is larger than the standard kit lens, but one has hood mounted, the
other don't. (I rarely uses a lens without the hood mounted).

I also see from the illustrations that the natural focal length is 31
mm (that's where it is most compact). That's very cool, a 31mm normal
lens with zoom capabilities.

BTW. I've already got the FA 20-35. I already love that lens. Except
for the build quality, and lack of weather sealing. So I don't think I
will feel very limited by the Ltd.

All that said. I might end up buying both :-)

Re: DA* 16-50 vs DA Ltd 20-40? You decide guys

2014-06-13 Thread Stanley Halpin
I’ve had the DA*s 16-50, 50-135, and 60-250 since shortly after their
respective introductions. Never an issue with SDM.

I have the 20-40 ltd. If I carry the 12-24 and the 16-50, the two together take
way too much room in any of my camera bags. So the 20-40 has become my
preferred travel lens if/when I am also taking the 12-24. I haven’t noticed
that I have lost anything in terms of image quality when using the 20-40 in
lieu of the 16-50. Obviously I lose one or more stops, a bit of reach on the
long end, and a bit of width on the wide end. But I gain a more compact kit. I
think I still have a slight preference for the 16-50, but that is probably due
to the sentimental attachment as much as anything else.

As has been recommended already, and if your budget can take it, buy both. See
which one works best for you under your shooting conditions and then sell the
other one. Consider any loss on the transaction to be a “short term rental”
expense. Or, as a variation on the theme, see if you can find an actual rental
place that has the 20-40, try it out for a weekend or two. You already know the
16-50...

Re: Mackinac Island Trip

2014-06-13 Thread Mark C
I'll second Rock Arch and the Grand Hotel. Fort Mackinac can be
interesting (there is another fort across the straights in Mackinaw
City). There is a section of the beach where the water is Caribbean blue
/ green that I always thought was interesting. The state park offers
some natural areas that I have enjoyed shooting in - but that is catch
as you can depending on the day and the season.

If you are going to Mackinac Island you will no doubt pass the bridge
and that offers some nice photo ops as well - it is the longest
suspension bridge is the western hemisphere, though the part that is
actually held up by cables shorter than the golden gate bridge, if I
remember my Michigan trivia correctly. IIRC, there is a park on the U.P.
side to the west of the bridge that is easy to get to.

When I was a kid my family took a few vacations to Mackinac Island,
Mackinaw City and St. Ignace. The Lil Abner themed restaurant in St.
Ignace was still there the last time I passed through a few years ago...

I see you compare the size of the 20-40 with the 31 Bill. That's a
zoom compared to a prime. I see it more as a compact zoom. Take a look
at the top picture here comparing it to the kit lens.
http://www.pentaxforums.com/reviews/hd-pentax-da-20-40mm-limited/construction-and-handling.html
It is larger than the standard kit lens, but one has hood mounted, the
other don't. (I rarely uses a lens without the hood mounted).

I also see from the illustrations that the natural focal length is 31
mm (that's where it is most compact). That's very cool, a 31mm normal
lens with zoom capabilities.

BTW. I've already got the FA 20-35. I already love that lens. Except
for the build quality, and lack of weather sealing. So I don't think I
will feel very limited by the Ltd.

All that said. I might end up buying both :-)

Have you had problems with the 16-50 being too big and heavy? Or not sharp
enough?

Having a 16-50, and surprised at how much I use it, I don’t feel any draw to
the 20-40, there are many other more compelling holes in the capabilities of my
lens collection.

i think you are shooting a bit high; if it existed price would be high, plus
the Mini wouldn't scale UI elements appropriately (as the OS knows to do on
 real retina displays)

Does anyone have suggestions for a relatively inexpensive solution for that?

assuming it has HDMI, that would suggest what to look for … e.g. this,
 probably smaller than you want:

Blink and you miss 'em.

But, if you're going for a George Hurrell look, your model is going to
have to put on a LOT more makeup you're going to need to retouch the
 freckles on her arms neckline.

And I think for a George Hurrell look that shadow should be a bit more
 pronounced.

I wasn't going for the Hurrell look. Just a portrait, but with strong
features like emphasized cheekbones, so I was looking for stronger
shadows.

For my own taste, I'd retouch the freckles unless the model specifically
asked that they be left. And I'd try to tone down the background around
 her right forearm the stool.

These shots were for my testing and practice, and her modelling and
acting portfolio. I removed all the transient blemishes (pimples,
whiteheads, redness, etc.). Were I shooting for fashion or beauty I'd
have retouched further. And for Patri's use, representative shots are
probably more valuable to a casting director.

Thanks for looking and commenting, John!

I never said I was looking at the same lenses you were looking at.

That would have cost you over $ 2300 Dan. This must be a superb lens.
Curious to know what lens this one is?

Thanks everyone for the feedback--very much appreciated. And big thanks Godfrey
