I went for neither, but picked up the Made in Japan version of the Tamron 17-50 for $ 425 brand new. This lens is brutally sharp. I had to dial in +4 as my K-5 + the Tammy was back focusing. Re: DA* 16-50 vs DA Ltd 20-40? You decide guys
I finally bought myself a 17-70 and I think its superb. If you can forgo the f2.8 I think its totally the way to go. It has some caveats, but nothing really deal breaking for me. Its also far sharper wide open (f4 of course) compared to the 16-50. The extra 20mm or reach is extremely handy for head shots and landscapes are usable at 70mm too. Re: DA* 16-50 vs DA Ltd 20-40? You decide guys
I haven't tried the 20-40, much as I'd like to, but I think your choice comes down to whether you can put up with the additional size and weight of the 16-50 it's wider at the wide end and longer at the long end and faster beyond 20mm. As a working tool that makes it the clear choice for someone who has to choose between these two lenses... *unless* the size/weight factor is important. I suppose the 20-40 could possibly be better optically than the 16-50 but I can't imagine there's enough of a difference to get worked up about: The 16-50 is one of the best lenses I've ever used. Downsides of the 16-50 are the more plasticky feel of the construction (though mine's been kicked around extensively for years without a hiccup, so I don't see any durability issue) and the larger 77mm filter size. -- Mark Roberts - Photography Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

By the way: If I had money to burn I'd buy the 20-40 Limited in a heartbeat, even though I have the DA 16-50. The Limited would make an excellent middle lens to use in a 3-lens travel kit (with the DA 12-24 and the 55-300). -- Mark Roberts - Photography Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: I hope someone will see this be able to reply.
Steve, I might be wrong, but to set up an iCloud e-mail account you have to own (use?) one of the internet-connected Apple devices. An assumption that all people have them might not be true. E.g. in my family, the only Apple-made device is an iPod-nano (Gen. 2 or 3?) that is used as a compact source of music for my little daughter. I don't hate Apple devices, I don't even have any... (... except for a tiny iPod-nano [Gen. 3] that was given as a gift at my wife's previous work.) Actually, I came close to having an Apple ID when I bought iphones for my brother. The moron (aka personal Apple consultant) who did the sales over the phone has enabled their e-mail spam to be delivered to the e-mail account that was used to receive the receipt for the purchase. Everybody I spoke to at the Apple support told me that they cannot disable it, and the only way to do that is to actually activate the Apple online account (from the phone [that I don't have]) or possibly on the web) and to change the e-mail preferences buried in it. Instead, I set it so that, all those messages from Apple are bounced to the person with the title Apple Senior iOS Technical Support who told me that. Apple support need to enjoy Apple experience. Re: DA* 16-50 vs DA Ltd 20-40? You decide guys
Keep in mind that if you like to stack filters on your lenses (like I do), you are likely to get vignetting with the 16-50. I don't know how the 20-40 performs in this respect, but I've never had a problem with the 16-45/4. At 11:30 AM -0400 6/13/14, Mark Roberts wrote: I haven't tried the 20-40, much as I'd like to, but I think your choice comes down to whether you can put up with the additional size and weight of the 16-50 it's wider at the wide end and longer at the long end and faster beyond 20mm. -- The Office Gallery - Scenic and Landscape Photography by Steve Sharpe 24 Maple Avenue Ellershouse NS B0N 1L0 d...@eastlink.ca http://earth.delith.com/photo_gallery.html -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: DA* 16-50 vs DA Ltd 20-40? You decide guys
I see you compare the size of the 20-40 with the 31 Bill. That's a zoom compared to a prime. I see it more as a compact zoom. Take a look at the top picture here comparing it to the kit lens. http://www.pentaxforums.com/reviews/hd-pentax-da-20-40mm-limited/construction-and-handling.html It is larger than the standard kit lens, but one has hood mounted, the other don't. (I rarely uses a lens without the hood mounted). I also see from the illustrations that the natural focal length is 31 mm (that's where it is most compact). That's very cool, a 31mm normal lens with zoom capabilities. BTW. I've already got the FA 20-35. I already love that lens. Except for the build quality, and lack of weather sealing. So I don't think I will feel very limited by the Ltd. All that said. Re: DA* 16-50 vs DA Ltd 20-40? You decide guys
I’ve had the DA*s 16-50, 50-135, and 60-250 since shortly after their respective introductions. Never an issue with SDM. I have the 20-40 ltd. If I carry the 12-24 and the 16-50, the two together take way too much room in any of my camera bags. So the 20-40 has become my preferred travel lens if/when I am also taking the 12-24. I haven’t noticed that I have lost anything in terms of image quality when using the 20-40 in lieu of the 16-50. Obviously I lose one or more stops, a bit of reach on the long end, and a bit of width on the wide end. But I gain a more compact kit. I think I still have a slight preference for the 16-50, but that is probably due to the sentimental attachment as much as anything else. As has been recommended already, and if your budget can take it, buy both. See which one works best for you under your shooting conditions and then sell the other one. Consider any loss on the transaction to be a “short term rental” expense. Or, as a variation on the theme, see if you can find an actual rental place that has the 20-40, try it out for a weekend or two. You already know the 16-50... stan On Jun 13, 2014, at 1:31 PM, Tim Øsleby maritim...@gmail.com wrote: I see you compare the size of the 20-40 with the 31 Bill. That's a zoom compared to a prime. Re: Mackinac Island Trip
I'll second Rock Arch and the Grand Hotel. Fort Mackinac can be interesting (there is another fort across the straights in Mackinaw City). There is a section of the beach where the water is Caribbean blue / green that I always thought was interesting. The state park offers some natural areas that I have enjoyed shooting in - but that is catch as you can depending on the day and the season. If you are going to Mackinac Island you will no doubt pass the bridge and that offers some nice photo ops as well - it is the longest suspension bridge is the western hemisphere, though the part that is actually held up by cables shorter than the golden gate bridge, if I remember my Michigan trivia correctly. IIRC, there is a park on the U.P. side to the west of the bridge that is easy to get to. When I was a kid my family took a few vacations to Mackinac Island, Mackinaw City and St. Ignace. The Lil Abner themed restaurant in St. Ignace was still there the last time I passed through a few years ago...
