PESO: The Impressive Clergyman

2015-07-11 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I was working in the yard today, while my wife was at the pool
listening to a podcast. She called to me said I should bring my
camera to the pool.

She had placed a flowery table cloth on one of the picnic tables on
the pool patio, and a small Praying Mantis had flown on to one of the
flowers.

Since we had recently attended a big screen version of The Princess
Bride at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (hosted by Cary Elwes),
the little fellow immediately brought to my mind The Impressive
Clergyman, as portrayed by Peter Cook.

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18052828

I took this image with my car key to illustrate how tiny the mantis really is:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18052835

We found a tiny ant, and fed it to the mantis:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18052856

He enjoyed his lunch at the pool:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18052849&size=lg

Re: PESO - You Can Buy Almost Anything...

2015-07-11 Thread Knarf
Just to be clear, I didn't say I never used it. I said I don't like using it. I
could only come to that conclusion by trying it.

In fact I did a bit more than just "try" it. But that was long ago. I realized
that I really didn't enjoy it as much as other, legal intoxicants.

Beer won.

I've never used the stuff either (let alone "inhale") but I was
entertained by one comedians take on the subject of "medical
marijuana". He went to his doctor to obtain a perscription and the
doctor asked him why he needed it. "I get these terrible headaches!"
he told the doctor. To which the doctor asked, "And when do you get
these terrible headaches?" To which the comedian replied, "Whenever I

Photographer's portfolio web sites...

2015-07-11 Thread Darren Addy
Many of you have photographer's portfolio websites or use an online
site for the same purpose. I thought I would draw your attention to an
article about that subject and a few of the comments posted, which
proved (rather than the norm) to be surprisingly useful. First, here
is the article listing 6 of the usual suspects:
http://petapixel.com/2015/07/10/6-top-online-photography-portfolio-hosting-options/

The informative part (for me) was the comments!

I had never heard of Koken but it looks intriguing to me.
http://koken.me
It is free (with some premium themes and plugins). It is built for
Lightroom integration, which may make it of special interest to some.
As luck would have it, on July 9th, the developers are essentially
putting it on "the block". I'm guessing that whoever buys it will want
to further monitize it, so I've downloaded the installer now so that
I've got the most mature free version, regardless of what happens
going forward.

Those who like Wordpress should check out the Photocrati template. It
is not free, but incorporates a built-in shopping cart for those who
wish to sell images online.
http://www.photocrati.com/
I don't know if I've mentioned it before, but I administer and design
web sites for my employer's many varied businesses. Some of the sites
are based on Wordpress, which has become something like 20% of all
internet sites. It was a royal PITA to stay on top of (and a constant
target of hackers) until I "discovered" the Wordfence plugin (which is
a godsend). If you work with Wordpress, make that the first plugin you
install and configure with a new installation.

Re: PESO - Alleyway in the Market

2015-07-11 Thread Darren Addy
Frank,
Glad you found my comments useful. They were correct, of course,
whether you agreed with them or not.
:)
:)
:)

I also wanted to comment on your "if I may be immodest for a moment".
I believe that to be(come) a decent, if not Good photographer, one
MUST become a good curator of one's own work. That means making
sometimes harsh assessments about one's own output. On the otherhand,
doing that well should turn up the occasional "jewel". Therefore:
I don't think that there is anything at all "immodest" about a
photographer approving of one's own work - as long as one is judicious
about it. The one who loves everything that they themselves produce is
either a narcissist or a fool (and most likely both).

Re: PESO ~ Green chair

2015-07-11 Thread Darren Addy
Everyone might think that this suggestion is ludicrous, but I think
that making a square or vertical crop out of this image that makes the
floor shadow more prominent really works. The right hand edge of the
cropped image would eliminate the extreme right side of the hat and
the 2nd hand (just).

Re: PESO - Alleyway in the Market

2015-07-11 Thread Darren Addy
Frank, I *love* this image and the inclusion of the person in the
frame really makes it more than it would have been without him. Love
the colors and the mix of light, the odd round reflections in the
alleyway shadows. Just a lot for the eye to move around with.

As for the tilt, you know me... it is normally one of my pet peeves
but I don't think this image has much of a tilt to it at all. I think
what is playing with our eye is that you were not standing directly on
the center line of the alley when you took it AND that there are lots
of off-kilter parts to the houses in the background. Your vertical
lines are very close to perfectly vertical -and since you were off
center, the middle line of the alley is not going to be perfectly
centered. I tend to think that some of the problems are that you've
got aged houses in the background that may be deviating from square
over time.

As to Bob W's quotes... I agree with them. But the question is: Was is
a conscious choice... made either at the time the exposure was made or
when the image was cropped? Or was one going for "square/level" but
missed it? Big difference (to me). Bottom line is... the image either
"works" or it doesn't. This image works Big Time, for me.

Could be or, maybe, severe gas.
Sure hope Bruce doesn't see this, P.J.! He may think we're serious.

Nice exposure, Bruce!

Garry Winogrand, when asked why he didn't keep the horizon level, replied
something to them effect that it was because it's not level in the real world.

Claude Chabrol, and indeed other film directors, often tilt it quite subtly to
instil a sense of unease and a feeling that something is out of whack, as if
you're suddenly adrift.

Re: PESO - Alleyway in the Market

2015-07-11 Thread Knarf
Thanks, Paul!

I did notice the slight tilt when I was processing but I decided to leave it.
Most of the buildings in Kensington are old (by Toronto standards) and the
neighbourhood is populated by non-conformists, punks, neo-hippies and the like.
Some of buildings are actually a bit tilted.

The tilt was purposely left alone in this photo. Whether it would be better
straightened or not is up to the viewer but it's there quite purposely.

Thanks for the comment!

Cheers,

frank

Not just her photos but the fact that she's so articulate, well-spoken,

Kudos to her. And thanks for the link.
