Norman Baugher wrote: Is there a big difference between the K-5 and K-3 other than resolution. There is definitely a big difference in price… Price these days? Maybe not so much. You can pick up a K-3 for under $700. The K-3 II is quite a bit more expensive right now. Do note that the resolution would give you the ability to crop about 20% tighter. There are certain issues with the button layout on the back of the K-5, such as the live view button being easily triggered accidentally, and these seem to be resolved on the K-3. The K-3 is also supposed to have better autofocus, but that may only be in low light. I don't know surf photography, but it's possible that they aren't changing distance from you fast enough that autofocus is totally critical. You might be able to get away with an older manual focus lens. There is also the possibility of renting a lens for the weekend. If you explain to borrowlenses.com what you're using the lens for, they might even give you a substantial discount. I expect that you have all the forms they would need to write the donation off their taxes. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com (postbox on min4est) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Lens Hood for 16-45 / 4 Zoom
Hello Eric, I have seen this rubberised foam sheets - about 1 to 2 mm thick and as light as a feather - at Michaels, Wall Mart and other craft stores. Paid 89 cents for a sheet. Here in India it is dirt cheap. Comes in one side black and the other side white, full black or full white. Kids use them for school projects and here in India I see them sold on the road side as shoe insole inserts. You print the lens hood on paper and then use it as a template on your rubberised foam sheet. There is an exact name for this sheet, just that I can't remember. Interesting about the cat door. Did Schrodinger have a cat door? Or could his cat could be simultaneously inside and out? Regarding step up rings: I've always used the inexpensive ones. They sometime stick (especially if left on a long time) but eventually they will come off. I tend to use step down rings frequently for reverse mounting lenses and one that are close in diameter (e.g. a 52 to 49mm step down) can be a real pain to remove, but patience usually prevails. There is an extension of that that says that Newton asked to make two doors: a large one for the mother cat, and a small one for the kittens. I just realized that at least as a temporary step, I can just buy a step-up ring and use the 77mm CP on my 67mm lenses. So, the question is: Any recommendations for the step-up rings? I see Goja step-up rings sold for about $6 on Amazon, with a bunch of positive reviews, Sensei on BH for the same $6, while B+W on BH is $18. Both are aluminum. A brass one from Sensei is $37, Heliopan - $47.50. Is there any reason to spend 3-times as much on B+W aluminum ring? Yet another question, how much of binding comes from aluminum rings? Is it worth spending 6-times as much on a brass one? Gracie has her first adult bike. I bought her a 2014 Giant Tempt 5, which was new but somewhat reduced since it’s last year’s model. Seems to work great. It has 27.5 wheels but an Adult Small frame. Re: Any wisdom on step-up rings?
Hi Bipin, First, let me tell you that you are wrong in your quick judgement. And the very fact that this thread exists is the indication of that. In any case, I thought you were wise not to be this condescending. But because this thread is not about me, I will leave it at that, writing off your personal comments to an awkward joke attempt. Second, let me quote two proverbs: I'm not rich to buy cheap things! The greedy pays twice. Now, back to the topic, - it is smart to look for alternatives and bargains, and there is nothing wrong with $1-2 pieces _if_ they work properly. But it would be stupid to save some $10-20 _IF_ that might prevent me from taking a picture with a $1K lens because I couldn't unscrew that ring while taking that proverbial priceless shot, or even risk damaging that lens. And _IF_ saving $60 on a CP filter would degrade the picture quality that is otherwise achievable with the three premium quality lenses totalling over $2K (which I already have), that makes money spent on these lenses not worth their value. Those big IF's are worth researching before the purchase, because I don't want to _waste_ my money. As for the filter wrenches, - one can buy dedicated ones for $6: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/807009-REG/Sensei_FW6277_62_77mm_Filter_Wrench_Set.html http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0095PQPHI/ Igor Bipin Gupta Wed, 22 Jul 2015 10:06:08 -0700 wrote: Igor, Igor the terrible big buck thinker spender! PDML Mail on MY cell
Several months ago I was going on about separating my PDML mail on my cell. I mentioned that my geek was about to give it up. Someone on the list asked that I let them know if we were ever successful. A week or so ago, it occurred to me to attempt setting up a PDML account. I did so, gave it a password I've found easy to remember, and I'm now receiving both PDML and Comcast mail. This is in case that above mention list person is still among us. Re: OT: First Adult Bike
The Giant factory in Taiwan is the world's largest bicycle factory. For years they made frames for other manufacturers but about 30 years ago they started branding their own. And you're right, they make good bikes. Many top manufacturers, like Specialized have all but their top racing frames made in Taiwan, likely by Giant. And many well-known brands (like Bianchi of Italy) have their more affordable bikes made in Taiwan - by Giant. BTW, virtually every carbon fibre frame, regardless of manufacturer, is made in mainland China. No one else has the facilities. Glad I ride Italian steel. :-) Cheers, frank On 22 July, 2015 7:06:40 PM EDT, John sesso...@earthlink.net wrote: On 7/22/2015 5:08 PM, paul stenquist wrote: Gracie has her first adult bike. What's in the name?
I know that there are quite a few language and grammar geeks among PDMLers. That's why I thought I'd share this linguistic question that got me puzzled. I see that almost everybody who is talking about Circular Polarizers uses an abbreviation CPL, either as a noun or adjective (e.g. CPL filter). The curious part is that none of the online photography articles and reviews that talks about CPL bothers to deabbreviate it. (Just as a reference, all scientific journals where I've published my articles require to define any abbreviation before using it for the first time, even for those that are common in the field.) So, my question is What does the `L' in CPL stand for? I have 3 versions of what it might be (or what photographers who use that abbreviation might mean), including a standard one that is typically used in optical methods in physics, chemistry and related areas of science. None of those 3 would be strictly speaking correct. So, I am suspecting that I might be missing something more obvious. So, what does the `L' in CPL stand for? Re: My New Photo Gig
The K-3 has the newish auto focus system with more focus points, (though there's some question if it's really that much better than the K-5II), but still in the same basic pattern, improved metering, 8FPS vs 7 for the K-5, dual card slots, slightly higher viewfinder magnification, and slightly modified control locations and functions, probably just enough changes to make jumping from a K-7 annoying for a while, and shifting back and forth also a bit annoying. Probably a few more improvements that I don't remember. The only real minus, is that in video mode, AS is no longer sensor shift, but is now what I'd call electronic pixel shift. That was probably done to keep the code base between the K-3 and 645z from becoming too divergent, as the Digital 645 doesn't have a shifting sensor, but now the 645Z body does record video. If all you were getting a K-5 variant for was increased resolution over the K-7 I wouldn't bother. However the K-5II/s have other improved features better metering and auto focus that actually works most of the time. The K-3 doesn't seem to be that much of a leap over the K-5 except for resolution and the extra AF points gives better granularity when specifying just what one wishes to focus on. Which seems to be the biggest downfall of the K-5II sometimes it decides to focus on the tip of a subjects nose, when the red dot appears to be centered on their eye. That sounds suspiciously like a phishing scheme where someone makes a web site (or sends an email) claiming to be a legitimate business and imitating their login page to get unsuspecting people to input their log-in info. Check the email and look carefully at the email address domain name to see if it is actually Time Warner. And before entering any log-in information, make sure that the domain is actually the domain you think it is. It is legitimately from Time-Warner cable. The reason I'm not confident about the offer is because Time-Warner Cable are blithering idiots in addition to being lying ASSHOLES. For years Time-Warner has been holding Raleigh subscribers hostage - they couldn't upgrade the cable internet service without a *BIG* rate increase!!! Yet, a month after Google announces they're bringing 1000Mbps Fiber to Raleigh, Time-Warner can suddenly afford to upgrade everybody's speed at no additional cost to the customer by just swapping out the modems? These are the morons whose email server was down for several months; the reason I now have an Earthlink account strictly for email. When I called their support number about the outage, they told me I didn't pay for email, it was just something extra they GAVE me out of the goodness of their hearts, so it was of no consequence that I couldn't access my Time-Warner email account. ... and by coincidence, just minutes after I posted, they took the entire system down. I couldn't connect to the internet, couldn't send or receive email and my internet telephone was dead. I'm not sure how long it was down, it was back when I got home from my weekly photography brunch just after noon. I called the support number on my cell phone got their automated system which told me they were conducting maintenance offered to call me as soon as it came back on-line. I've yet to receive that call. The can't log into my account because they can't find me by my email address or telephone numbers is due to a completely different INCOMPETENCE on the part of Time-Warner. They don't know how to communicate by plain text email the links they include so you can view the content in a web browser are defective.
