We have two major parties (and only one house) but we make up for it with proportional voting where everyone gets two votes. One is for our electorate MP who gets in on a simple majority. The other vote is a "party" vote where we vote for whichever party we want to support (the MP is also a party member so you can double-up or mix your allegiances). This is good for electorates where the incumbent MP (or their party) is popular: the people who don't support them can at least get a voice. The party votes are collated across the entire country and any party that gets at least 5% of the party vote, or at least one electorate seat, will be allocated seats based on their proportion of the party vote. This works wonders for smaller parties, but not the ones that are too small (ie lunatics). It's a good system but it does tend to put a lot of power into the hands of smaller parties when a coalition is required to form the government. And it does make it impossible to get rid of the senior party members - anyone high enough up the "party list" in the big parties will get a seat even if they lose in the electorate. Certainly, two of our best governments over the past 50 years have been minority governments. In Canada, with three major parties, a minority government's effectiveness often depends on who holds the "balance of power". Re: PESO - 'Bunchberry'
Thanks for your comments/observations Donald. I've come from a background of almost exclusively slides and mostly never see the image in B+W and therefore don't convert my color digital captures to B+W, although I can visualize this one in B+W. I would still favor the color version. This image could obviously have been more closely cropped but I don't see the advantage in that - I would have had to cut off some of the white buds. Thanks for your suggestions. I'm not trying to defend the image, just providing thoughts as to why it is as it is. Re: PESO - Rule #1
Thank you very much, Frank. Araina was having fun throughout the entire 5 hour shoot. But since she's an actress, she also portrayed neutral, serious, or alluring looks at times. But throughout she maintained a playful humour that made it one of the most enjoyable shoots I've ever done. And thank you also Godfrey, Dan and David. I'd much rather have a government that's paralysed by arguments and indecision because that way they're less likely to screw the country up. The problem is politicians have convinced us that something must be done. Which leads to the proposition when ever something untoward happens; This is something! Therefore it must be done. (No thought required). What you described is what the U.S. federal system is supposed to insure, government gridlock. There isn't supposed to be a centralized locus of power, either in the executive or the legislature. A mere 51% of the population, of which many may regret the stupidity of the majority in a few years, aren't supposed to be able to impose their will on the resisting 49%. Well that's been pretty much been subverted. The the skeleton is still there. It should take a gigantic consensuses to allow such changes. A parliamentary system, such as most "democracies" have makes it very easy for a bare majority to get the levers of power and do pretty much what it wants, and given that it's government, usually poorly.
