AFAIK it's only the Quicktime browser plugin that's discontinued, since any
decent browser will handle video natively now.

(I apologise if that's mentioned in the article, I haven't read it.)

I find myself in a situation where an iPad is the best tool for the
job. I am thinking the 9.7 inch ipad pro as the best compromise of
cost, future proofing and usability. Can these things take an SD card
as well? I'm thinking 32 gigs might be a little light, but I don't
want to spend extra if I can use cards.
The iPad air 2 will do what I want at 64mb and can be had for less
than the base pro model. Would it be the better choice?

The primary application is being the control panel for a quadcopter. I
want to have a bigger screen than my phone.

thanks

Re: I am an idiot: Broke off the battery door on my K-3 II

2016-04-17 Thread Mark C
Ouch - that's a bummer. If you haven't done so already, check to be sure
that the camera works with the battery seated but the door ajar. I
recall someone on the list breaking the door on the SD Card chamber of
an older Pentax DSLR and finding that even though the SD card loaded
without a problem the camera still wanted the door to be shut before it
worked. Maybe Pentax reads the list and cut back on the over
engineering. Or is it enginerring.

No idea how it happened, but I know I was stupid enough to leave the

entire bottom plate replaced. Is there anywhere I can purchase the
part and replace it myself?

This is a BAD time of year for this to happen. I'm guessing I can
still use it, a spring-loaded clip holds the battery in, even with the
door open - and I think I can put the grip on it to make sure it
doesn't drop out.

Re: GESO incidental interiors and exteriors

2016-04-17 Thread Christine Aguila
Thanks, Ann! That third one is odd. The man was standing inside this
storefront business just looking around the room. Difficult to tell just
exactly what the business is though. The business was closed, and he just
stood their staring. He never knew he was being photographed as well. He was
definitely wrapped up in his thoughts.

No statement trying to be made about the bank shot—just all coincidental. Had
a giggle over the 1st one: you don’t see beauty parlors like that one much
these days. Clearly, one wouldn't use the word salon to describe it! :-).

I hope to get back into the groove—and soon. Lately, I’ve been very
self-conscious about shooting people/street photography—I’m in some kind
insecure/self-conscious place, which I don’t quite understand, especially, when
I think about all the stuff I’ve shot up until this past year or so.

Sometimes I think it’s clearly me just feeling insecure. Other times I think
it’s some negative-people-vibe I “think" I’m sensing when I’m out in public.
Maybe it’s both. Maybe it’s neither, and I’ve just been in a creative funk.

The end of the semester is soon approaching, and I truly plan to spend the
summer on some creative projects. I am feeling better. It’s been a tough
time. Dad died. Mom is now in a nursing home. Still stunned my best friend
died last year. But I do think I’m definitely starting to feel my old self
again—so no need to worry—I’m cheerfully moving forward. I’ll definitely be
more engaged with PDML—and it feels good! Have missed you guys tons!

Cheers, Christine

It has fine public transportation, a great center city, lots of culture

When the outside temp gets above 60 it is time for shorts and a T-shirt.
The AC goes on if the apartment gets over 70.Good thing

Pen F + Tokina 90/2.5
Minimal crop, slight levels adjust, slight saturation increase.

I am re-assessing my lens requirements. Boris is absolutely right in
that the Voigtlander Heliar 15/4.5 is far too slow to be a useful
general purpose lens (one to you Boris!) and I think I might sell it.
Thing is, it is a lovely landscape wide angle on APS-C and so I might
just hang onto it in case...

I've snagged an M50/1.4 off eekbay for 60 quid, waiting for that to
arrive. Portrait lens on a half-frame sensor.

When I had Pentax film cameras, I never got into 50mm lenses, finding
the angle of view neither here nor there. I had a 28mm which I loved,
and the other way you were into telephoto territory. Now, with my Pentax
24/2.8 on a half-frame sensor, it gives an image like a 50mm, and am
actually enjoying it.

So the question is, do I replace the 15/4 with something like the Oly
17/2.8? It's pricey, and actually I have always favoured a wider angle
as a general purpose lens. So I might consider the Oly 12/2 (which gives
an angle of view like a 24mm lens on a full-frame camera). But although
it has manual focus override, it's still an electronic lens with no
aperture ring.

Then I came across some reviews for the Samyang 12mm f/2 which point to
a good value for money lens. It's about 250 GBP which is a lot cheaper
than the Voigtlander 10.5mm f/.95 at 900 GBP!! The angle of view on half-
frame means it will act like a 24mm lens - ideal for my idea of a
'general purpose' lens. That is, a lens that I would normally default
to, leaving it on the camera as it is picked up to be used.

I'm seriously tempted by the Samyang. I'm building up a kit that relies
on manual focus and manual aperture. This requires forethought in
setting up for photographing, a good challenge for me! The picture of
the pigeon would be so easy to get with an auto-everything cam/lens
combo, and when I used to have EOS 1D gear with IS lenses and machine-
gun capability I did all that, and it was fun, but now.

The satisfaction of achieving a similar photograph with a simple and
basic setup (not even a zoom lens) is high. I felt like I'd actually
used skill and judgement in getting a decent image [of the pigeon] and
so in a way the photo is almost a 'reward' for effort. I find this much
more satisfying as I get a little older now.

My son thinks I'm barking mad. But hey.

BINGO, John.

I was just joking about trying to "gild the lilies." Actually, this
is a science demonstration of evapotranspiration, which my wife often
did when she taught environmental science, and was now doint to
prepare for a demonstration for the science education nonprofit she
works with now.

http://water.usgs.gov/edu/watercycleevapotranspiration.html

She put the flowers in water with food coloring, and the dye leaves
colored lines on the edge of the petals, where the evaporation occurs
most strongly.

One of the questions we discussed recently with Godfrey was Quick Time.

I had the rucksack safely stowed in the back, but someone moved it while
digging around in there to get to their gear & didn't put it back where
I had stowed it; they left it where it could bounce out.

PESO - Big Fat Juicy Pigeon - and thoughts

2016-04-17 Thread Steve Cottrell
Sat outside in the back garden on a bright chilly day doing some lens
testing with the Tokina AT-X 90mm 2.5 Macro and a large pigeon landed in
the apple tree about 12 feet from me. Just long enough to swing the
camera up, manually focus using the excellent peaking assist (already
set to f/5.6 and 200 ISO, IS on) and fire 2 shots before he decided he
hadn't surveyed his landing site properly and I was too close for his
comfort. This is the first shot.

But hey.

Also if it makes you feel any better I was stupid enough to push the
quick release button on a tripod which caused my K-5 and 12-24 to both
crash into the asphalt 5 feet below. Neither fared very well. I also
was stupid enough to leave that same camera somewhere I thought was
secure with my belongings only to return to find that it disappeared.
Luckily only a $50 50-200 was attached. It magically returned to me 2
months later in even worse shape. That camera was pretty cursed I tell
you. Thankfully I replaced it with a K-5 IIs which focuses 100x better
and just never looked back.

I hope you get it sorted. :(

Re: I am an idiot: Broke off the battery door on my K-3 II

2016-04-17 Thread Zos Xavius
it would probably be a really easy thing to repair. You would have to
make sure the weather sealing gasket for the bottom plate was clean
and correctly placed is all. parts are hard to come by. the first
option would be to find a completely broken camera with a good bottom
plate. that would be cheaper than precision or any service center. If
the door is the same as my old broken K-5 I would gladly cannibalize
if for you. My K-3 is back at precision for the THIRD time so I cannot
compare. :/

Did the camera see a fall or anything. If it hit hard you might want
to have someone check it out anyways or at least test it thoroughly.
It will operate without a battery door and the battery does lock
inside the camera. Not ideal, but at least you can test it out.

Eric can get pentax parts thought he does not service digital cameras.
You could ask him if he could get a bottom plate for your from Pentax.
Just an idea.

Re: Pop-Up Flash Doesn't

2016-04-17 Thread Zos Xavius
Your first clue is that you hardly ever use it. Hold the button down
and gently pull on it. Maybe even run it under a bit of water. It is
weather sealed after all. I'm willing to bet that it has just stuck
together. If that button pushes down the release should be engaging.
Even without a spring it should open up. Sometimes I have to pull on
my popup to get it to come up. I should probably not drink coffee
around my cameras. :)

Re: Pop-Up Flash Doesn't

2016-04-17 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
It doesn't pop up at all when I press the button.

If I slip a thin blade between the flash unit and the main body, I
can, with some difficulty, get the flash to open. Once it is open, it
functions normally, with no need to prop it up or anything else. the
spring seems to be intact and functioning.

It is a big PITA to get it up, however, and I am afraid of damaging
the body by inserting a blade.

Given how infrequently I use the pop up flash unit, however, and the
good performance of the K-5 IIs in low light with high ASA, I am very
reluctant to incur the inconvenience and cast of sending out for
repair. I was hoping some one would suggest a "trick" for getting the
button to work again in opening the flash.

If I recall correctly, this sort of problem used to inflict the MZ/ZX
