Can lightroom sort by GPS?

On the nights when I'm shooting with astrotracer GPS will be on the

them out.

A really easy way is to tag them upon import.

That would be easy, if every photo I took in that session was with
astrotracer. Sometimes when doing night landscapes I'll shoot the same
shot both with and without astrotracer. In theory I'd be able to use
photoshop and combine the sharp portions of each photo.

Any exposure over 30 seconds will be astrotracer.

Unfortunately, exif does not seem to have anything indicating that it
was in bulb mode.

I wonder if it would be worth going back to methods from film days &
just carry a little notebook and writing the information down while you
are taking your photos?

Re: Price jumps on the new lenses? $1800 -> $2300

2016-07-02 Thread Stanley Halpin
I think there is a circular relationship which validates the truth of your
comment Mark, as far as it goes.
If you have only one lens, you will be limited in the subjects you can shoot
and you will tend to get good at it. E.g., if you have a macro, you’ll probably
shoot macro. If you have a long lens, you’ll probably look for birds (feminine
or avian, your choice). On the other hand, if you are mostly interested in
landscapes you’ll buy a medium-wide lens and use that for landscapes. Seldom
will you use that for birds. So, subject matter dictates lenses needed, lenses
on hand dictate subjects you will try to shoot. If you only shoot a narrow
range of subjects, you’ll probably get pretty good in that one genre.

My problem, and it is a nice problem to have, is that I like many forms of
photography, I enjoy being in the streets of Florence or the alleyways of
Venice, I enjoy macro shots of ugly bugs or weird frogs or fantastic
dragonflies in the middle of a boggy meadow, I enjoy wildlife and scenic
vistas… And I have been able to slowly accumulate a good kit which gives me
tools to use in many circumstances. But it is not feasible to have that kit
travel with me, and so I go through a planning process of trying to anticipate
what I might use, how I would use it, etc. As you suggest, I would probably
improve my results if I concentrated on fewer subjects and less equipment.

And it would be simpler to travel with one or two lenses. I have fond memories
of walking the streets and alleyways of Rome with Meg and Gianfranco a few
years ago. I had two identical camera bodies with me (K-20 IIRC) and several
lenses. Mounted one body was the DA 55/1.8, the other had the FA 77/1.8.
Through the whole day and evening I never felt any temptation to swap in the
DA16-50 or DA50-135 I had in my shoulder bag; excess weight. Today in the same
circumstances I would probably spend the whole day with one K-1, and only the
24-70/2.8. With 70-200 in the bag in case I felt really inspired to get some of
the finer architectural details.

I tried the DA35 on the K-1 shooting against a lighter colored

For Sale (very late Friday) K-18/3.5

2016-07-02 Thread Stanley Halpin
A few weeks ago Colin noticed a PK A-50/1.2 for sale on the Chicago area
Craigslist. He mentioned it here, I followed up, and I bought it.

The seller just texted me that he has a K-18/3.5 for sale “and a few others.”
If interested let me know and I’ll pass along the contact information.

My experience with this guy was harrowing. Dealing with an unknown person… Does
he have the item he claims to be selling, or is it a fraud? Is the item his to
sell, or is it stolen? Will you ever actually get the item once it is paid for?
On arrival, does the Ex+ lens turn out to be a Bgn at best? Spoiler alert, this
one turned out well.

I called the guy, left a message. He called back a few hours later. I asked him
about the lens, where he bought it, how long he had had it, what the condition
was, etc. He wasn’t very forthcoming (like maybe he didn’t trust me?) but I
eventually got enough to believe that he had indeed bought the lens used,
couldn’t cope with the non-AF aspect of the lens, and so was selling. I sent
him the requested $ via Paypal.

A week later I called, left a message asking where the lens was. He said that
he was at school, the lens was out at his parents’ house and he hadn’t the time
to retrieve it yet. But soon…

A week later I sent a formal query via the PayPal dispute resolution system.
Got a quick response that he really would be putting the lens in the mail right
away. This was a Saturday afternoon. A few minutes later I had an automated
notice from USPS saying that postage for a package for me had been purchased.
The following Wednesday I called, asked why the tracking number showed that the
package had never been mailed. “Because I dropped it off at the post office
after hours and so it was never logged into their system…” Yeah, right.

The next day the lens arrived. ’Tis a thing of beauty. I logged a “situation
resolved” into the Paypal system, texted the seller that all was good.

So, is dealing with him like dealing with an experienced seller? Not so much.
But if you have strong nerves and are interested in what he is selling, let me
know and I’ll give you his contact info.

I wasn't a better photographer when I had less equipment, but I may have
benefited from having to work for years with a 35mm camera and two lenses plus
a 6x6 TLR. My lenses were scratched and incapable of truly good work but I was
able to do well enough to publish numerous photos. Now with much better
equipment I can produce much better results. Perhaps photographers should have
to shoot with shit for twenty years or so but once they learn their craft, good
equipment will prove a tremendous advantage.

I jumped over to Adorama, their prices are still $1300 and $1800. I ordered

Last night we went up towards the end of Empire Grade (between Jamison Creek
and Lockheed) to try some night photography. I wanted to try out both
astrotracer and the Rokinon 24/1.4 with the K-1.

This might be the nicest shot photographically. I was mostly looking to
learn the gear, but it's nice when you get something half decent out of the
attempt.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/27430114234/in/album-7215766773260871
4/

This images is a real cipher, because when I look at it in lightroom, the
burn-in from the adjustment brush is a lot more even. At first I got the
weird artifact even in loupe mode, but not in develop. I've gotten rid of it
in loupe mode, but it is showing up in flickr.

Full album shot with the 24/1.4 and the 15-30, some in astrotracer here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157667732608714/with/280440222

If fluidr cooperates, you can see them with exif data here:
http://www.fluidr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157667732608714/with/2804402227
5/

I also had a go at photographing Andromeda, shot with the takumar (bayonet)
1:2.5 135mm (actually Luiz's copy of the lens)
A* 200/2.8
FA 80-200/2.8
Tamron Adaptall 300/2.8 (some in crop mode)

http://www.fluidr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157670435249006

Since it was an experimental session, I've got a range of exposures with the
different lenses, I also showed some without cropping in lightroom to show
the field of view of each lens.

Not always. If I'm doing a particularly short exposure with a short
lens, and focal length * seconds is well below 600, there isn't a lot of
blur. And those are exactly the situations where I want to be able to

If you are using astrotracer, you will have GPS turned on. Do you
habitually shoot with GPS on?
Can lightroom sort by GPS?

On the nights when I'm shooting with astrotracer GPS will be on the
whole time. It's when they are mixed in together that I need to sort

I take it you can't tell what you were doing by looking at the pictures
during import?

It looks fine in the develop module, when I'm trying to use the

It was also interesting to note that the long astrotracer shots with the

Full album shot with the 24/1.4 and the 15-30, some in astrotracer here:

Since it was an experimental session, I've got a range of exposures with

Mini PDML in Oxford, pics to follow

2016-07-02 Thread Steve Cottrell
Some may remember veteran PDMLer Christian Skofteland from a few years
back. He and his wife Kerry and daughter Alex were just finishing a 2
week visit to London and popped over to Oxford where Alma and I met them
for lunch and a wander about. Sadly no Pentax cameras were involved, and
although I carried a couple of Pentax lenses in my bag all day, it was
the Samyang 12/2 that inevitably played the main role today aboard my
Pen F. Really pleased with the results and so I'll put together a
gallery shortly for perusal.

I first met Christian back in 2004 at the start of my first trip to GFM
with the likes of Tom Van Veen, dear Cesar and the inimitable Tanja. We
had beers at a micro-brewery in Virginia (or was it DC?) and although
Christian didn't attend the NC trip, he has kept in touch ever since. He
makes a few business trips to the UK and we meet for a beer. Decent
bloke and the only person I know who named his daughter after a Pentax
camera. True.

Pics soon.

Back to cameras and Pentax--I was thinking yesterday, what if Sony had acquired

Still, I like the way Ricoh makes cameras, and I'm still hoping for some kind

PESO 2016 - 120 - GDG

2016-07-02 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The Leica SL and the Leica M-D are the antipodes of the digital camera world.
I've had the SL since last November. It is the most excellent full-feature,
incredibly versatile, modern camera I've used to date, and replaces nearly
everything in my camera closet.

The Leica M-D, by contrast, has and does little other than what a 1980s Leica
M6 or Nikon FE2 does. No LCD, no options, no AF, no video, no AutoISO, no JPEG
files. Just focus, shutter speed, aperture, ISO setting, and shutter release.
It has a button you press to find out how much room you have left on the card
and how much battery you have left. It has a self timer. You can set the date
and time which is recorded in your exposures, you can install a firmware
update. It stores raw files on the storage card. That's it. It's "the other
camera" I've wanted for the past decade and a half. I bought one.

I updated the firmware, fitted a neck strap, fitted the Summilux 35 v2. Twisted
the focusing ring to minimum, set the lens to f/2, the shutter dial to auto,
and set the self timer on. Plunked it onto the bookcase shelf and pressed the
button.

   https://flic.kr/p/JhRu8d

First official photo out of the M-D typ 262. My apologies about the subject.
The firmware update evidently reset the camera because the file is numbered
0001. A fitting starting point, I guess.

I dumped the M4-2 and all its bits out of my Tenba DNA 8 and stuck the M-D as
accoutered, and the Summarit-M 75mm f/2.4, in the bag.
Time to go for my walk.

Re: OT: Best 27-inch monitor?

2016-07-02 Thread Paul Stenquist
Thanks Rick. I'm going for it, and my son gets the 2011 iMac that I'm using as
a monitor.

2016-07-02 Thread Rick Womer
Paul,

That's the successor to the U2410 that I have at home (and to the U2407 at
work). Both are excellent, sharp, wide-gamut monitors that I've been very
happy with. Reviewers have noted that the quality/price ratio is hard to
beat.

Re: How to find which photos have 1:1 previews in LR

2016-07-02 Thread Jostein

maybe what you want is covered by this plugin?

I have a question for LR gurus.

I am trying to clean up some space on the main drive of my computer,
where the LR libraries (and hence the previews) are stored.
For that, I am removing 1:1 previews for those folders that are
"completed" (i.e. I've done what I wanted to do, and now they are just
stored without any active work).

Is there an easy way to see which photos have 1:1 previews stored and
whihc ones don't?

I am also deleting "smart previews" for those folders.
For "smart" previews, it is easy to see which photos have them.
I go to a particular folder, Ctrl-A to choose all of them (on Windows),
and then under the histogram panel, I see if those photos have smart
previews or not. (It shows the count when multiple photos are chosen.)
I do not see any way of telling if the photos have 1:1 previews.
Of course, I can "delete 1:1 previews" anyway, but it is a waste of time
if there are none.

Thank you!

Igor

Yep I figured as much.

Here's some experience from a colleague in South Africa who shoots video
on an A7s:

and

The M4/3 format I'm quite liking despite wide-end envy. That said, 12mm
is fine for what I do. I don't shoot raw so I can switch instantly
between colour and mono on any of the 4 custom settings I have created:
C1 is ISO 200, C2 is ISO 400, C3 is ISO 3200, and C4 is ISO 6400. The in-
body stabilisation (5-way) is superb on the longer glass and image
quality is best I've encountered. Form factor is great - small and
easily handled, with a rear LCD that swivels and closes with the screen
facing inwards, which is the way it stays most of the time. I've stopped
chimping during shooting. The EVF is superb and peaking works great with
the MF lenses. Absolutely love it.

10-18 of full frame, man that demands balls to get into the action ;-)

I'll drink to that! Cheers
