That is a very nice species portrait.
I think his plumage is not only seasonal but hormonal; trying to look
his best for his ladies.

Tasty too. :-)

Subash, yes a sub species of grouse, pheasant family -- here is a nice
writeup showing him in summer plummage

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willow_ptarmigan

I'll check my notes -- I do have good notes from that trip - I think I
had my 300 prime on my LX.  definitely shot with LX.
The gravelly rise he was on makes it appear that I had to get down on my
belly tograb that shot but I didn't...

Here is another view -- the original slide is sharp but my scan , done
quite a few years ago, was not very good.  I should do it over

it is on a calendar and in a book as is, though.

https://annsan.smugmug.com/Works-in-Print/Books-in-Print/North-America-Naturally/i-V6MVrCB/M

He was pretty tame, for a bird who is hunted for food.

It's a miserable, rainy, chilly morning here, but yesterday was hot and

We have f magnolia trees. Two are large trees that are at least 30 years
old. They lose their leaves in winter, and are covered in white blossoms
in early spring, before the leaves return. One is about 12 years old, and
never loses it leaves. I yields very large white blossoms, one or two at a
time, throughout the summer and early fall. One is new, and just beginning
to get a full set of leaves.

The other is five years old, still somewhat small, and loses most but not
all its leaves over winter. It suddenly burst into bloom yesterday, with
seven lovely blossoms, most high enough to prevent gettin nice images. A
