SV: Timelapse Tour of Europe
Timelapse is an excellent way to show events that unfold too slowly for humans to stay concentrated on the event. On a philosophical level there's a deep meaning in observing a flower unfold as the sun rises, a mould spreading on a petri dish, or the seasons shift. It certainly grounds you to nature in a very specific way. But then you'd also have to ask yourself if life really is long enough for that sort of thing. As a genre, timelapse has been around for more than a generation already. As with all other image-making, digital has made it available to a much, much larger group of practicioners. Jostein -Opprinnelig melding- Fra: Igor Roshchin Dato: 29. juli 2014 20:47 Til: PDML@pdml.net Emne: Re: OT: Timelapse Tour of Europe It is a nice set of photos, thanks for posting the link, Dan. I was thinking about it at a philosophical level: time-lape photos as a new genre. There is a recent (~20 years?) trend when we don't have time (and desire) to focus on watching anything for longer than a few seconds. So, this type of video is an alternative way of showing that. Does it look cool because of this or it is just cool? So, is it a "trend du jour", or a genre that was enabled by technology and will last? I wonder what fellow PDMLers think about it. SV: OT - Interesting story about car cemetry
Cool. There is a similar one in Sweden, near Töcksfors, just across the border from Norway. I do have a few shots from there, but it's in my main archive which I haven't brought online after the move yet. Here's a series from a Norwegian newspaper: http://www.vg.no/bildespesial/9486 I got two of mine into PPG. SV: Today morning, just recently
Sorry to hear about your predicament, Boris. Thanks for taking the time to inform. The current bombardment has reached the news up here, but news don't travel very well into my brain when on vacation. I've spent the last week at the cabin; the one you've been to. Stay well. It is not my intent to convey any emotional sub-text whatsoever. Times are approximate, except the very first one. * 5:50 - my alarm clock rings; I swipe it to silence. I decide to linger in bed a bit longer. * 6:00 - Julia wakes up and starts her morning routine * 6:10 - we hear rocket alarm, I jump out of bed. Julia grabs the kids and heads to the stairway of our house. According to rear command, we have 90 seconds to get to safety. This gives me time to pull on my yesterday's t-shirt and trousers. We climb down two stories, it seems that everyone in our building (4 story, 40 years old) agree that the area between the first and second floor is the safest. First floor is one immediately above the ground floor. We're alone as no one is awake at this time of day. * 6:15 - we hear some booms. It is interceptor rockets handy work. Anat is counting. * 6:20 - I suggest we return. Girls start to stand up as they were sitting on the floor. We hear another rocket alarm. The girls return to sitting on the floor. * 6:25 - We hear some more booms. Anat keeps her count. The doors around us start to open as our neighbors drag themselves out of bed. Few minutes later we return home to start our day. Now comes the emotional part. It's been about a week since this has started. Re: OT - A guide to reading abstract art
Thanks for the link, Bruce. :-) What I miss from such explanations is the importance of culture as a backdrop to understand art. This one take a step i that direction when mentioning that one might start to understand the visual language of the particular artist after seeing twenty or so works. My favourite personal example of cultural (or historical) knowledge is "Guernica" by Picasso. I saw that image first time as a teenager, before I'd heard anything of the Spanish Civil War. It didn't make much sense until I looked up the title in an encyclopedia. For figurative art I suspect icons are wasted on the agnostic for the same reason. :-) Jostein -Opprinnelig melding- From: Bruce Walker Sent: Monday, June 16, 2014 8:18 PM To: Pentax Discuss Mailing List Subject: OT - A guide to reading abstract art This may or may not help ... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/06/13/abstract-art_n_5486273.html -- -bmw -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
SV: Lenovo Computers
Well yeah, *that* sucks. :-( support for Lenovo in Norway is served by a contracted independent vendor. I've read experiences with them as being very choosy about the kind of failures they're willing to provide service for. Sifting out the clear-cut warranty issues where they can pass the bill on to Lenovo, no doubt. Liked the term PassingthoughtPad. :-) Jostein -Opprinnelig melding- This isn't a Thinkpad. At best it's a Passingthoughtpad. Re: Lenovo Computers
Sorry to hear your experience, Bill. My previous workplace used Lenovos. All business model ThinkPads, in various sizes and over many processor generations. The total inhouse stock of them was about 40-50 machines at any time. They were extremely durable and reliable. I had three of them myself over the years. Never broke down, just got outdated on processing power. I also bought two ThinkPads for my sons, and the experience there has been the same; both machines have endured the abuse of gaming teenagers. So naturally I'm a little surprised by the categoric dismissal of all things Lenovo, but maybe it's a different story for their non-ThinkPad models. A three weeks roadtrip for an area the size of whole of Scandinavia (at least), can't be anything but touch-and-go. In my honest opinion that makes all pictures obtained this way into travelogue shots regardless of the sun's position in the sky at the time of pressing the button. To be honest, I mentally regard the whole trip as reconnoisance for further trips some time in the future. In particular I'd love to go back to the High Sierras and to Death Valley. Ann put it quite succinctly. :-) Actually, I think about half the shots in the book are produced around sunrise or sunset. Another fourty percent are from "normal" hours, and the rest are night shots. I totally agree with Ann and the others commenting on the quality of the light. I certainly prefer the light that happens when the sun is close to the horizon. Another factor is that I soon realised that the midday hours were the best for doing the transport legs. I could be more efficient if arriving at a new place with a couple of daylight hours left to do reconnoisance, procure maps, pay entrance fees to parks, etc. Jostein -Opprinnelig melding- Fra: Alan C Dato: 6. januar 2014 20:44 Til: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Emne: Re: I have committed a book Quite amazing. Someone mentioned some software that they said would do pretty close to what I wanted. I saved that email someplace, but don't remember where off hand. SV: Regarding the assessment of raw image technical qualities (i.e.correct exposure, focus, sharpness, etc.)
I agree with Bob S., you've painted yourself into a corner, Ciprian. One ballpark indicator of technically acceptable recordings is the histogram. If it doesn't pile up on the edges, it's basically okay because there is information in the deepest shadows and/or brightest highlights. When editing, make sure you don't clip it. Beyond that, play. As Paul says, your eye is a far better judge of quality than software. And just like AIs or neural networks, it has to be trained by being presented to a lot of examples. The analogy probably doesn't hold much further than that, but you'll do good to indulge yourself. Leisurely. best, Jostein -Opprinnelig melding- Fra: Ciprian Dorin Craciun Dato: 30. desember 2013 17:13 Til: pdml@pdml.net Emne: Regarding the assessment of raw image technical qualities (i.e.correct exposure, focus, sharpness, etc.) Hello all! Before describing the problem, please let me stress that I know very well that the "quality" of a photograph lies more in its aesthetic properties than in its technical ones. However in this thread I don't discuss about "photographs", but "images", i.e. the raw data (pixel values) that are totally decoupled with what they represent. (Thus I hope I won't start a flame-war regarding aesthetics vs. technical qualities.) (If you want to skip the "context" and go directly to the problem, just go to the section titled `The questions`.) == The context == So the problem, I always capture "images" --- note how I didn't say "photographs" :) --- in RAW format. And, while working in fully manual mode, very often I obtain multiple "images" of the same scene, where the main variable is the exposure time. Also while in low light, either interior or at night, I strive to use a low ISO like 200-400 thus with an exposure time of about 1/10 of a second, and although the SR is enabled, I always use continuous drive (in low mode) to take about three exposures, in the hope that one of them is sharper. The problem? During the editing process, after I select which "scenes" are the ones I like the best, I end up with a lot of "images" of the same scene (with almost identical composition). And thus my problem is which of the two or three "images" is the most suitable one, in terms of technical properties, to be used as input for processing (thus obtaining in the end my "photograph"). == The questions == Thus my questions are the following: (A) Which are the technical qualities I should look for in the image? (B) What software tools exist out there that would help in the assessment of these technical qualities? == My answers == For (A), the technical qualities, I've identified the following: * Is the subject properly focused? I.e. since I use auto-focus, sometimes with slim subjects it might happen that the camera focuses on the background. * Is the image sharp "enough"? I.e. not blurry due to shake, miss-focus (back or front), subject movement, etc. * Is the exposure "correct" / "optimal"? I.e. especially since I use ETTR (expose-to-the-right): * did I overexposed something, and if so which channels, which parts of the picture, where are the "next" shadows relative to the highlights, etc.; * do I have underexposed areas, and like above how much, etc. Did I miss other technical properties? I've purposely dismissed the following: * noise -- which by its nature is a property of the sensor and constant in effect for a given ISO value; * depth-of-field -- which manifests itself as a lack of sharpness for the objects outside the DOF; (although it would be nice to be able to estimate how far a given pixel is outside the DOF;) * flare -- they are easily discerned in the image; * bokeh, vignetting, distortion, acutance, etc. -- which are invariable properties of the lens (for a given aperture and focal length); (and bokeh is a highly subjective quality;) * chromatic aberrations -- like above, although would be nice to highlight them; Unfortunately for (B), how to asses these qualities, I have a few theories (see the next section titled `The science-fiction`) and less ready-to-use solutions... First the solutions. Currently I'm using Geeqie (an Linux-based image manager) to find the scenes I like, and for each scene which are the obvious failed images, i.e. those with clear over- or under-exposure or blur, and I end up with a few candidates. However even if I zoom 100% I don't see the raw image, but the embedded JPEG, which was already processed by the camera, thus I can't correctly assess the sharpness nor the exact exposure "optimality" (due to white balance). Thus I then switch to RawTherapee --- which I've configured so that by default it doesn't apply any settings at all, just neutral or disabled values --- to look at the raw channels histogram, the exact image without added sharpening, and the focus mask. However I can't use the "blinkers" (i.e. und

I would appreciate an explanation, even if off-list. Then, I did not mean to imply that FB were criminals. I meant to illustrate the point that this specific lady struck me as a very special kind of individual - one that is more preoccupied with righteousness than with anything else. I may be wrong, but at least I tried to clarify my view. I think that FB is too big a community to have it change their practices based on experience of a single individual. It is in fact a very interesting issue, because FB is not democratic by design. The rules are not produced by mutual discussion of FB members, but rather are given. It's north of Florence, OR, very near the Seal Caves. Heceta is the best positioned lighthouse I happen to have ever seen. Last year at about this same Dec date, I made the trip up there, from the Sacramento, CA area, to attempt a sunset shoot. Weather was grey and misty. After a couple days, we (wife and I) gave it up. Wish I had the gumption to head up there again today. I would guess, you can position yourself so that the sun sets just to the left of the light as you view it from a pull-off viewing area immediately south of small bay. SV: PESO - From Dante's viewpoint
Thanks for commenting; Bruce W., Christine, Attila, Rick, Don (and wife), Bob W., Ann and Paul. I'm very glad I bothered to drive up to Dante's Viewpoint. If any of you go to Death Valley in the future, make sure you get up there too. It's a perfect spot for watching the sunset, if nothing else; but the's a lot of great motifs up there too. I met a couple of guys from Las Vegas who had come up specifically to shoot the sunset from there. Nice blokes. The "leaving" shot features the lights from their car. I explained what I had in mind, and they promised to drive slowly and evenly to make the light trail steady. Re: PESO - Minerals exposed
Thanks for commenting, Steve, Jack, Attila, Paul, Ann, Bruce, Godfrey, Bob W, Brian, Frank and Dan. I asked a ranger what kind of minerals we were looking at, and told him I suspected the tuquoise to contain a lot of copper. He could not confirm but told me the purple stuff was manganese. According to Wikipedia, the green stuff is mica, but that's a family of minerals that can have a lot of different metallic "contaminants".
