Re: Found Converter K and screwing again (warning, lens tests!)
Thanks to those who offered suggestions. I found my screwmount to K converter in a box of Canon FD lenses. (What was I thinking.?) I wanted to try a favorite Spotmatic lens on my K10D. It's a Carl Zeiss Jena 25mm 1:4 Flektogon. A mighty glass using 77mm filter. I got it at a flea market in Rome in 1991. It was almost welded to my Spotmatic for years. The Pentax SM converter installs and uninstalls(a concern with these things) without problem on the K10D but the Flektogon has play when mounted. About a quarter inch of rotation loose. I had problems holding everything together during exposures and images were unsharp. I found a way to eliminate the play but images were still unsharp. Eventually, I discovered the focus was off a bit when using the scale to focus.(TTL focus is quite difficult with the K10D screen and the F4 ap on such a wide angle) Focus confirmation to the rescue! I never neded it before. The Zeiss 25mm is at least as sharp all across the frame as my "best" SMC-M 28/3.5 wide angle. Just for fun I compared the 25mm and 28mm to the 18-55 kit lens. To my utter surprise the kit lens at 24 and 28 on the same test target (a shingled old building nest door) was almost as good as the prime lenses. All tested at f8, BTW and viewed at 1:1 in LR2. At moderate magnifications there is no practical difference. Well, it was fun, anyway..... Re: who processed color prints
Gaetan, oh yes! I made my own RA-4 color prints untill about four years ago. At that point I was convinced digital printing was here to stay. I printed up to 11X14 RA-4 at home using Tetenal chemistry that didn't need temperature regulation and a drum on a roller. 16X20 and larger prints I made at a rental darkroom in San Francisco. I had a lot of trouble with color balance and repeatability. Now I send my film scans or digital images to a lightjet lab. Interestingly enough, the labs print with lasers on the same Fuji Crystal Archive RA-4 paper I used in the darkroom. Good inkjet prints have a much wider color gamut than RA-4 paper. That means I have to compromise with yellow and orange colors compared with the screen image or a good inkjet print. In the old days I never knew those colors were there! No regrets. Re: Inkjet Printers not Epson
Now that I have a collection of very colorfull images from India I am dealing with the color gamut limitations of my usual printmakers. Reds, yellows and some greens rendered in wide gamut Pro Color RGB by the K10D exceed the gamuts of Epson 1270/80 inks and my RA-4 printer using a laser jet. When I apply those profiles the color saturation goes away leaving a dull color where it was saturated in the original. I have no experience with Canon or HP or other printers. Re: 40 Gb with the K10D
I spent the month of January in India. I'm pleased to report the following experiences with the K10D. The K10D performed without a hitch other than those related to my learning curve. I did not anticipate that the 28/2.8 F would be my most used lens. The 43 Ltd. spent a lot of time in my bag because it was a bit too long for use in the narrow warrens typical of the most interesting old indian cities. The 50-200 DA is superb. I used it a lot at the camel fair/races and on the Ganges at Varanasi for four days. I put a 52mm "normal" hood on it permanantly and left the factory hood at home. The 18-55 kit lens got some use at the wide end and I only used the 16mm Zenitar for a few shots on the Ganges. I should have saved the weight and left it at home. I had a 50/1.7 M on the ZX-5 back up which my partner ended up using. He used the Zenitar more than I did. Of course I had my faithfull GR1 in pocket at all times. I shot 8 rolls of Astia with the GR1 and got some nice shots due to the convenience of that sweet camera. I left the K10D ISO at 100-400 except one night we went out into the streets during a wild Shiva festival when I used ISO1600 and the 28 on manual focus. I like the results. The back-up PD70X and Wolverine 40 drives worked fine. The PD70X copied a 2Gb card in 3 or 4 minutes. The wolverine was much slower. Every nite I would back up the day's shots and format the cards for the next day. I got 121 RAW DNG images per card. I lost two fast 2Gb cards somewhere but the remaining two covered all my daily needs. Recharging the three camera batteries and the hard drives took place about every three days. I got a bunch of plug converters to match Indian to USA plugs for about 25 cents each. Bob had a video camera to charge so we usually had all the plugs in a hotel room busy at times. I never missed a shot because of low batteries. All the chargers were different but they all worked from 100 to 250 volts so we didn't have to use heavy transformers with the 220 volts at 50 cycles in India. Re: Compact Drive 70x Question
Marc, I just got back from a month in India using the PD70X(80) and a Wolverine (40), the latter to back up the former. I bought some chinese batteries NiMH 2000s. The PD70X works fine with my 2gb SD cards. I didn't try the backup mode because I used another drive for insurance. The only quirk I have noticed with the PD70X is occasionally it quits and says "Error 19" but turning it off and on again clears it up. Gave me near heart failure, the first time! I saved 40Gb on each drive and it all copied to my computer drive without problems. I hope yours workd out OK. Re: DA 50-200
I rarely used long lenses but I got a K10D a DA18-55, DA 50-200, FA43Ltd and a F28/2.8 and went to India for the month of January. I found myself using the 28 and the 50-200 more than the other lenses. I am very pleased with the 50-200 results. It is very sharp, and with SR, the 5.6 limit isn't important. I usually left SR on and shot at 8.0. Good results at all focal lengths. Bill Lawlor -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Re: Using a Super Tak w/ istDS- A challange to sanity?
IMO, the way members of the list are obsessing with this thread is enough to make me go back to the Leica list insanity of my past. Give it a break! However, I want a shot at it too Longer lenses have less DOF than shorter lanses AT ANY SAME STOP compared between the lenses. Look at the DOF scales engraved on lens bodies or any of the tables of computed DOF published for anout a century. Ease (accuracy?) of focus in a slr camera is related to the perceived DOF. Assuming adequate "brightness" of the image in the finder, the narrow DOF of long lenses will "snap into focus" more readily than when using a shorter lens. Shel's experiment makes sense. Re:getting a pentax 67II
Matt, I had an early Pentax 6X7, the one without mirror lock up. The standard 105/2.4 lens was superb in every way. When I got a late model 55mm I was even further amazed. Working in a chemical darkroom yielded beautiful prints, color and black and white. If you are going to scan images the $500 class of flatbed scanners will do good work. It will take an expensive drum scan to equal an optical enlargement when print size gets over 16X20. You know to get a solid tripod and ball head and a bag of rocks to hold it down. Even with MLU camera motion can be a problem because of the big horizontal focal plane shutter.Eventually it was the weight of the gear that got to me when I started doing more travel photography. I have a pair of lightweight Fuji rangefinders in 645 when I need MF. I have a good 90mm enlarging lens I'll part with if you are interested. I shot slide film and can agree it is hard to bring out the brilliance of the transmitted light through the leaves with scanned slide film. Re: K10D power?
I am very interested in buying a K10D asap. I plan to spent the month of January on a personal photo trip to India. I have little experience with high end digital cameras, but thanks to Shel I have enough experience to believe it is time to make the plunge into digital. My quandry is about the power supply for the K10D. I'm unfamiliar with L-ion batteries, chargers etc. What kind of capacity might I expect from a charged battery? I will use RAW files, flash very seldom, if at all. How long would it take to recharge the batteries? Will the charger work on Indian 200-220 50 cycle mains? Is the K10D a camera with wonderful features but tethered to a home/studio environment? What kind of company sells a camera using only L-ion batteies and lists a power cord for, I assume the battery charger, as an "optional accessory"? Obviously, nobody has actually used the K10D yet, but I'm hoping some members of the list have experience with L-ion powered cameras. I pray the answer is not "get a K100D and a case of Lithium AA batteries. Thanks, Bill Lawlor -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Re:"Photo Scanner" vs 35mm film scanner
Donning my Nomex fireproof garments I step into the fray.. I have made many 16X20 RA-4 darkroom prints from medium format images on Fuji Crystal Archive paper. I also have scanned some of the same 645 and 6x9 negs and transparencies on an Epson 3200 and printed on epson 1270, 2000, and 9600 printers using various papers as well as lightjet printer on Fuji Crystal Archive, all 16X20. Framed and hanging on the wall, people don't see a difference other than those improvements made possible by judicious use of PS. Shel can see a difference, but customers don't. I prefer the scanned images over the traditional prints. At The Santa Fe Workshops I took a digital printing class. We had Nikon 4000, Nikon 8000, Epson 4800, and Imacon MF scanners. I scanned 645 transparencies on the Imacon at 3200 dpi and made some nice 30X40 inch prints with the 9600. I tried to do a comparison scan with the Nikon 8000 but the MF negative carrier was so bad we couldn't get a scan. When I returned home I scanned the same image on my Epson 3200. Comparing the Imacon scan with the Epson 3200 I was surprised to see little difference in sharpness between the two. Surely not $7,000 difference! However, shadow detail was better with the Imacon. I have also had Tango drum scans made that are better by far than anything else. I continue to use the 3200. I might upgrade some time to a scanner with ICE. For 35mm I use a Nikon 4000. Bill Lawlor BTW, I believe the Epson 3170 is made in China.

Re: Permission to shoot
I just returned from OAXACA, Mexico where local street people are pretty wary of tourists w/cameras. When I saw someone I wanted to shoot I would engage the person somehow, ask directions, buy an inexpensive trinket or just exchange smiles. Then a request to shoot was always granted. The first shot would be posed, but the second, after focus and exposure had been established, was often natural and un- noticed. Handicapped beggars never were shot. I gave them an offering and skipped the photo altogether. In the 16th C church in Mitla I thought I was alone to photograph the altar. Then I noticed an old Zapotec Indian man on his knees carrying a candle and a boquet of lillies reciting prayers as he made his way painfully up the aisle to the altar. I slipped out of the church a silently as I could. He would have made a great subject but not at the cost of his dignity. It has taken me a long time to learn to be more sensitive to people I want to photograph. I still have a ways to go but I am uncomfortable about some of the bad examples of intrusion I committed in the past. As a teacher, my students are sort of a captive subject group. I tell them I am a lens, camera and film testing neurotic and please wave me off if they object. Really flattering pics become gift prints to the subjects. I have tried to adapt the famous warning to "one man's privacy begins where my lens ends". Bill Lawlor

Re: pentax67
Derby, I had an early 67 and would not agree that it required any special treatment. It was a real brick. I never had a problem with my very used 67. You could probably pound nails and break rocks with one. It would be a great camera to have in a hostile crowd. With a long lens it would make a war hammer fit for Thor. The shuttered len is a great option because the focal plane shutter shakes the camera without a heavy tripod. The shuttered lens was to get higher flash synch for weddings, etc. I never used the 90mm but if it is as good as the 55mm and 105mm it is superb. You might need the double cable release they offered. It opens the fp shutter in B just before the lens shutter fires. Wait 'till you lay a 6X7 Velvia chrome on the light box! Bill Lawlor

Subject: The rise of Digital = the fall of Medium Format Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Last Monday we had a lecture to mark the 60th Anniversary of our camera club (http://www.edmontoncameraclub.co.uk/) from Andy Rouse (http://www.andyrouse.co.uk/), a well known wildlife photographer in the UK. He uses Canon gear and used to rave about the Pentax 645nII, but has gotten rid of it since getting the 1D Mk2. He says he gets far better quality and better workflow from digital than from MF at any conceivable output size, including billboard. - I saw a presentation a few months ago by Sebastao Salgado. He had always been a Leica user. He said in the future he will be using Pentax 645 equipment because of the technical and artistic possibilities of the larger negatives. When asked about digital he said "There is no black and white in digital. Converted color images don't compare with true black and white." He also said he was going to show the plight of animals and the environment in the future. I wonder if he is stockpiling 120 and 220 film? Bill Lawlor
Re: 28mm lens optimization
I have a second version 28/2.8M(http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/lenses/primes/wide-angle/M28f2.8-ii.html ) that is much sharper at 4 than at 8. I checked is several times to be sure I didn't mix up the slides. Maybe these are really 1.4 lenses dumbed down to 2.8 at the aperture? Bill Lawlor
Re: Swiss Alps
Markus, don't forget to open up a stop or even two when metering glaciers and snow in sunny conditions. In 1989 I forgot this rule and ended up with pictures of nice gray snow on the Jungfrau. The meter did what it was supposed to do-reduce the image to gray. Bill Lawlor
Re: Whee!
Regarding Camera West in Monterrey, CA I can attest to what a good guy the owner, Sean, is. A few years ago at a camera show I bought a panoramic MF camera from him. I paid cash plus two Leica lenses. I tested the camera with a few rolls and then headed off to Istanbul. The first roll is Istanbul resulted in a complete jam and malfunction of the camera. I tried every day to make it work. When I got back I sent Sean an email about it. He refunded me my lenses and cash without any argument. A month later se sent me an email asking "just what was wrong with the camera?". Whe he got around to checking it it worked fine. It appeared that there was a loose screw in the camera that had jammed it but later moved out of the works. For a while I thought I had the loose screw. Bill Lawlor
Re: film scanner
Colin, if you are planning to scan OLD slides they will probably be Kodachromes. Kodachrome is/was a dye additive process that could produce long lasting colors compared to the Ektachrome and Anscochrome slides of the past generations. Some Nikon scanners, as has been mentioned, have a setting for Kodachrome. Results vary. ICE is a no-no because of the high relief of the Kodachrome dye images on the film. I have slides from my family collections back to the early 50's. The Ektachromes are faded while the Kodachromes are as brand new. They scan well on my Nikon 4000 ED. Good Luck, Bill Lawlor
Re:On the Go Storage..
Many of the posts about On the Go storage sound to me like a nightmare. When I am "On the Go" I am traveling across borders, often in third world countries. I don't count on hot water. I can't imagine struggling with all the hardware, improvisations, memory devices laptops and batteries being described in some of these posts. There is a solution to the problem. Film! It is compact, archival, universally available, inexpensive, lightweight, and comes in different flavors. Film can be used in many simple, reliable, cameras including the great Pentax classics. The lenses used on many digital slrs will still work on film cameras. Film can be scanned to produce beautiful images of higher resolution than all but the most expensive digital slrs. Certainly digital is the future for most photography. However, for photography "On the Go" I'll stick to my Leica or my MX. KISS Bill Lawlor

Re: Efke/Adox films
Adox KB14 (ISO 25) was a superfinegrain high acutance film developed by the German firm Adox with the cooperation (subsidy?) of Leica. The Leica motive was to get a film that would do justice to Leitz lenses. I used to buy 100 ft rolls from Freestyle (www.freestylesalesco.com) and develop in Rodinal at 100:1 dilution with infrequent agitation. The result was beautiful tonal values and sharp acutance. Adox sold the plant and patents to Efke in the former Yugoslavia. I think it comes from Croatia now. Try it, you will like it. Bill Lawlor

Re:SMC M 50/1.4 vs Ricoh XR 50/1.4 P
Following up on my earlier post of a test opinion: I disagree with the praise of the Ricoh 50/1.4 at least when testing my own lenses. I just finished comparing the SMC-M 50/1.4 with the Ricoh 50. From 1.4 to 8.0 the Pentax 50 was sharper and had better contrast at every stop. The test setup was a Pentax KX, mirror locked up, on a tripod with exposure according to a Sekonic incident meter. The Sensia 100 images were scanned with a Nikon 4000ED and compared at actual pixels in PS. Bill Lawlor

Re:Ricoh 50/1.4
Rene, further to my comments about the Ricoh 50, I found the following remarks on one of the camerareview sites. "Test report of all manual focus 50/1.4 from a UK photographic magazine which published 10 years ago has revealed that this carl zeiss 50/1.4 is NOT the best. It is placed on the second. The real winner is the new Rikenon Program 50/1.4 by RICOH. Surprise? If you can find a Rikenon P 50/1.4 and take photo at aperture from f1.4 to f4, you will see how superb the Rikenon can perform at such wide aperture. Please don't mix up with Ricoh 55/1.2, as 55/1.2 is rubbish". Bill Lawlor
Re: Rikenon 50/1.4
Rene, I have a Rikenon XR 50/1.4 P lens. It is a much better lens than my Pentax SMC-M 50/1.4 in fit and finish, smooth focus, and feel of the aperture setting ring. I find the optical quality excellent. The Rikenon does not appear to be made by Pentax. The mechanical build is different. The "P" means it has the option of aperture adjustment by auto exposure as do the Pentax A lenses. The Rikenon takes a 52mm filter and is heavier than the Pentax M lens. The Ricoh seriol number is 104123. How does that compare with your lens? Bill Lawlor
Re:Horrid hot shoes
Thanks to all who shared opinions about hot shoes. I own more than 20 cameras but have never purchased a new one with or without the hot shoe cover. Maybe I will just remove the offending item with my bench graider and cover up the damage with epoxy putty. Re: hot shoe cover?
I don't know if anyone else finds the ubiquitious hot shoe/accessory mount a nuisance, but I am annoyed by the sharp edges and ugly appearance of a "feature" I seldom use. Is there some kind of a cover that keeps it from snagging skin and clothing? One of the great features of the original Spotmatic was the absence of any hot shoe on its beautiful prism cover. I would remove the shoes from my cameras but that probably would open the prism to light and dirt. Any ideas? Thanks, Bill Lawlor
Re: Help on Pentax K2DMD
I just got a nice black K2DMD at the San Jose Photo Fair. The seller put in a set of "new chinese batteries" The battery check led came on and remained illuminated for about two hours. The camera seemed to be functioning and the exposure meter checked very close to a Gossen digital. I was shooting a test roll when the red led went out and the camera locked up. According to some Pentax literature on the camera lockup is a "warning" that the batteries are low. If the batteries were really fresh there must be a short or other power drain in the camera. I'll check again with more batteries. Meanwhile, do any of the sages of the list have any suggestions about this nice 1975 camera? Any suggestions of a good repair shop? Thains, Bill Lawlor

In December I saw War Photographer, a doc about the life and work or famed PJ James Nachtweny. He was shooting in Bosnia , Rwanda, and Indonesia using a Canon EOS. He uses Tri-X for most shots.
