It was even more confirmed by official press releases that coincided
with its June 9 launch date.

If Pentax stuck to a naming convention now we'd have nothing at all to
complain about.

Re: Card not formatted

2016-06-04 Thread Bruce Walker
There are always writes, Larry. Eg: file metadata like "last time
accessed". A few others too that make sense to the OS, but that are
unimportant to "we the people". And these writes are to the directory
structure.

As for buffers being flushed, yes that happens eventually, but if
Lightroom does some stuff then you immediately pop the card, you could
easily have done that before the buffer flush since they are done very
lazily.

As for why now and why not before? Luck. Both good and bad.

I always leave my card mounted so I can delete all the images from it
before replacing it in the camera, so I never see this auto-umount
fail behaviour.

Re: Card not formatted

2016-06-04 Thread Bruce Walker
On any UNIX system disk reads are cached and writes are delayed to
avoid redundant or unnecessary write operations. This is normal
behavior. Unmounting a drive flushes all the caches to the device so
it's consistent.

If you remove a drive -- of any kind -- from a UNIX system (including
Mac OS X) without first unmounting may or may not leave the filesystem
in a damaged state.

No, there is no intentional "break me" mode for SD cards. :)

Nice work, Dan! The more abstract ones work best for me.

Stairwell #1 is just about perfect. The warm sandy tones in this

Were it mine, I'd go straight to b and lots of contrast. It's
perfect for that treatment I think.

Re: Is the DA55 slow to focus?

2016-05-24 Thread Bruce Walker
To me, all the SDM's are kinda sluggish to focus, especially in really
poor light. I found the benefit to the SDM motor to be largely the
quietness and accurate focus, not the time to acquire focus.

I automatically just manually focus in low light. In acceptable light
though, they snap quickly into focus with no hunting around the focus
point. If it's hunting to the end stops then you have definitely got
too little light.

But focus isn't entirely an attribute of the lens, it's a system where
the camera body and the lens both play a part. If you can't focus a
DA* 55 in some given light, do you think that any other Pentax lens
would focus? I rather doubt it.

Re: OT: Telemarketers

2016-05-19 Thread Bruce Walker
I have a fairly sophisticated anti-telemarketer system running, a
legacy from my anti-spam days when I was an enthusiast. (I wouldn't
attempt this project now. I only have to maintain it a couple of times
a year.)

I'm running Asterisk -- a software PBX -- and I have a SIP device
connecting my phone line to my house TCP/IP network. When a call
arrives, Asterisk monitors it and forwards the Caller ID to my script.
That farms out searches to the net and checks my white and black lists
for a match. It also checks the published North American dial plan
lists to see if the number is even legitimately registered to a telco.
Many are spoofed and are 100% bogus.

If it determines that the caller is a likely telemarketer, it picks up
the call and plays a pre-recorded "I'm sorry, the number you have
called is not in service" message to the hapless caller.

I manually maintain the blacklist, but I only have to lookup a caller
once every few days. The rest are automatically nuked.

After a number of rings it switches into answering-machine mode, and
takes the call normally.

We're rarely bothered by tele-spammers.

Knarf has initiated this in prior years but he's been quiet lately so
I'll kick it off.

The Salon des Refusés is a gallery of the shots submitted to but not

Feel free to add yours to the thread.

This is the shot of the three I submitted that was not selected by the curators:

As all the images I submitted contained much exposed skin, I imagine
that I gave the selection committee pause. :)

You might reasonably expect that, but nope. :)

Pentax supplies a free Lightroom image tethering plugin that works
over USB. I refuse to have anything to do with it because: (A) wires;
(B) if it glitches you lose the shot(s) [nothing is saved to the SD
card while in use]; (C) I'd have to have Lightroom running on
something in the studio. (I don't own a notebook computer.)

There is also a full-featured for-pay Pentax solution, and 3rd party
packages that supposedly work better than either of the Pentax
solutions, but I'm happy with my wireless solution, so haven't
bothered to test any of them.

I tether -- images only -- using a 3 year-old Eye-Fi Pro X2 8GB card
in the 645 to send low res jpegs to my iPad Air. I have no control
over camera functions, but that's okay. I stick the iPad up on a light
stand for the creative team and myself to see so I can judge lighting
and the other folks can ooh and aah. :)

Even though I'm sending the lowest possible quality jpegs to the
Eye-Fi, it still can't keep up when the shooting gets rapid, so
sometimes it's more of a PITA than useful.

PESO x2 Camille & Jeanloup Sieff

2016-05-04 Thread Bruce Walker
This mini project came about in a way because of Annsan. :)

A couple of years ago I bought a book of the nude and erotic work of
Jeanloup Sieff from Ann. I loved it and considered how I might like to
pay homage to him one day.

Camille approached me to shoot nudes. She had taken a half year break
from modelling, had recently been working out, was feeling great about
her body, and felt that now was the right time to end the hiatus. I
suggested that we use Jeanloup Sieff as an inspiration and she loved
the idea.

We shot on Monday. Here are the first two retouches I arbitrarily selected ...

Super idea, Mark.

It should be menu configurable to replicate different shakes; eg:

- nervous person
- serious coffee drinker
- serious drinker
- one handed
- one handed at arm's length (selfie)
- one-handed by bike rider
- on car dashboard

Re: OT: Monitor Specs

2016-04-24 Thread Bruce Walker
How fancy you need to go depends on what you are editing, imho. Eg: if
you are doing portrait retouching you need to go way upscale in specs.
If you are just doing basic edits on the usual sorts of subjects, you
can get away with a lesser monitor.

If your budget can afford it though, I *highly* recommend a 4K or 5K
monitor. IPS of course. Gamut wider than basic sRGB. And yes, beware
of any monitor that can't be dimmed enough for proper calibration.

In my case I got all that plus a computer for free by buying a 27" 5K
Retina iMac. But there are plenty of 4K monitors out there now in the
21" to 30" range.

GESO - Chalk work

2016-04-24 Thread Bruce Walker
A boutique art magazine called Emboss is featuring the colourful
project that started my almost year-long series involving a humongous
chalkboard that I created in the studio.

http://www.embossmag.com/#!SPOTLIGHT-BRUCE-WALKER/cozyt/571cc4d60cf269c350ee2297

BTW: NSFW. YMMV. OMG!

All shots taken with the 645Z, DFA645 55mm/2.8, f:8, 1/125th sec, 100 ISO.
Key light: 5' umbrella softbox, above-left.

Comments welcome!

Yeah, just one, the busiest one, in my office studio. I had to expel
all the software ref manuals (Photoshop, et al) out of it to make
enough room for the "pure" photobooks.

Of course the 3-vol set of Exotique (1950's fetish magazine) is a bit
suspect as a pure photobook. ;) I guess it will have to find a special
shelf.

I also take up a shelf in the livingroom and one in the main library.
I only started collecting a few years ago, and I still limit myself to
subjects of specific interest for new books. My used book pusher
generally sells me anything that is brought in, so I have some great
stuff by Kertesz, the Ansel Adams "bible", etc.

"My bookstore", Dencan Books in The Junction, is one of the few
remaining in the Toronto area. Eddie is in his 70's and will retire in
a year or two after liquidating his stock, and that will be about it I
fear. Meanwhile he still buys, but he's very choosy.

I have donated many books to one of the local hospitals, especially
fiction (mystery, SF). They sell them to patients and visitors and it
helps fund them.

I bought a 9.7" iPad Air last fall primarily for tethering to my
camera during shooting. I also use it for browsing the web and social
services at home or coffee shops via WiFi.

I chose the base 16 Gig unit as I didn't (and don't) plan on storing
anything on it. I don't try to use it for processing images as it's
hopelessly underpowered and would just frustrate me.

It's a portable screen and viewing device, nothing more. It works great.

Re: OT: Advice wanted for Antivirus/Firewall (Windows 10)

OEM stuff into my former company's security products, and I dealt with
Mr Kaspersky himself), I would recommend that _very_ highly. Super

I agree with Rick, and I'd point out the 2nd as the overall winner.
Very nice set.
