Overall in good shape but the Pentax logo across the front was a bit worn.
Just adds character though as the flash works flawlessly. You'll love the

flash use question

2002-01-07 Thread C or B Waters

hey list,
I was thinking about this flash I have and it's proper use. it's a Pentax
dedicated non-ttl flash (JCPenney). When used in auto, with the photo-sensor
in the face, it gives a requested aperture setting for the film speed you
have loaded.
Q: If I'm in AV mode and the camera can find an acceptable shutter speed
for the aperture and correctly expose the shot and THEN the flash fires and
makes everything brighter, am I not then over-exposed?
If I actually remembered which shots I took with this flash as opposed to
the pop-up, I'd probably know the answer here

Cory Waters
A little confusion is good for the mind, I think.

Well, if you are going to do that, I prefer a link so I don't have to go
hunting for the stuff

IMONSHO, It is a courtesy to offer your gear to the list first. I purchased
a camera from a list member that way. I feel safer buying from
list-members. There's a sense of reputation here.
I would be disappointed if a friend of mine (youse guys are my friends,
right?:) put something on auction that he knew I wanted and then sent me the
link hoping I'd bid on it. There's no reason to sell anything to "us" for
less than you think is fair. If you have the time, offer your items here.
Post a price that you'd be happy to sell for. If you don't get any takers,
go somewhere else.

Re: lens value: a workable definition (dollar per photograph)?

2002-01-02 Thread C or B Waters

Paul,
How much is a lens worth if it's the one you needed to get the shot you
want? Is Quality-per-use to be discounted? If each time you use the lens
you are disappointed with its results, the lens may have a negative worth.
OTOH, I would agree that it makes more sense for most of us to buy the
mid-range unit. No real need to spend ALL the money on lenses that'll see
limited use. Use some of that money to buy more gear and maximize it's
potential! :)

December assignment PUG

2001-12-10 Thread C or B Waters

Here's my ramblings on the Assigned December shots:

"Fleeting Time"
by Jackie Lee Mowery

First off, looks like your scanner is good like mine. I always want to
clean the glass but it does not help :(. Makes the images look a little
dusty. I need to say that I didn't notice the cat in the window until about
my tenth look. HAR! I think we have the same chair. I am wondering if
the subjects know you posted this picture to the "world". It doesn't seem
like the most flattering photo of either of them. I'd like to see the
mother's eye a little more. Nicoli's face is a bit out of focus. Like Mr.
Robb, I do like the candid family shot. And it "feels" like a picture I
myself would find poking out of my print packet while I'm walking to the
car.

"Volleyball at the Pier"
by Steve Larson

1000mm lens huh? I seem to recall an episode of "Chips" where there was a
guy at the beach with a big telephoto lensor I might be making it up.
Good action shot. The sand looks a little washed out. And there's a weird
lavender tone to the whole shot. I'd like a bit more depth of field, the
blue hat guy's face is a focus point I'd like to see. I wonder what other
points of reference you could have included. The net or the water or
something? Takes me back to my volleyball class at the university. Except
that it was in the field house in Northern Michigan and it was -20 degrees
and snowing outside ;)

X factor?

2001-12-10 Thread C or B Waters

I was looking through the Sunday sales fliers this morning (Christmas IS
coming, you know?) and noticed that Sears has a ZX-50/28-80 (2.8X) with a
Fuji multi-pack, development mailer, and a leather camera bag for
$299.99US. They state that they are so sure you'll not find a ZX-50 with
28-80 lens advertised for less, they'll send you a $100 Sears gift card if
you do.
Should be hard as this is the ONLY Pentax SLR advertised in the sales fliers
in Atlanta this weekend.

But my amusement came when I noticed that they'd expressed this lens's
magnification and all others in their flier with the "X" factor.
Admittedly, I have not been looking in the regular "consumer" locations for
lenses, but when did they start doing this with film camera lenses? This was
traditionally reserved for the video world, right?

You CAN use a parallel port (printer port) scanner. I had to resort to this
after several USB scanners failed to work in my system's configuration (it
seems like my printer driver was dis-allowing the USB to function properly-
go figure).
The USB is faster and a bit better than sharing the parallel port with my

Bruce,
Thanks for the comments.
It WAS a mostly- cloudy time of the day, though the image turned out a
little more gray online than it is in the print (I'm still learning the
digitizing process).
The crop being that shape is a function of the shape of the hole in the
fence and my wanting to give some sense of where the cars were going and
where they were going. I wanted to try to convey some of the sweeping
effect of that turn. I tried it with more of the left side cut off but
didn't like it as much.
It was manually focussed. I think I picked a tire mark or a place in the
rumble strip to focus on.
I liked the headlights too :)))

Re: Industrial site pix...

2001-11-29 Thread C or B Waters

I ran into this site a while ago. I was compelled to look at EVERY picture
in the site. I has a blast trying to imagine the people who had been in
those places and circumstances that lead the locations demise.

Well, how much did you pay for it?
Better yet, send it to me and I'll tell you if it's good or not in a year or
so :)

Latest PUG Assignment : FACIT

2001-11-29 Thread C or B Waters

Sorry this is so late but I didn't know that Facit = Fabio Cittadini. Makes
sense NOW though :)
SO...
"Whirls"
By Facit

It looked like a man-hole cover at first :) Could easily have been the top
of a hot air balloon as well. But it's a building. Looks like it was
really close but then I noticed it's a 500mm lens (drooling). The
building in the upper right corner is a little distracting.. There's an
interesting blue shadow on the top ( far side) of the disc, was it a cloud?
Not much detail in the water on my screen but I guess it was a little way
from your position...
Once I get past the "what the heck IS that thing?" phase, the disc isn't all
that interesting. I'd be interested to see the other shots you took from
this location that might include some more elements.
Oh, and what are those things on the outer circle of the disc?
Lightning-rods perhaps?

I wonder if it's possible to take a shot of the top of this building
anymore...

Nice shot
Good Shooting
