Air transport strategy

2004-05-19 Thread Clive Evans
Hi tan
I fly a lot and use a pelican 1600 for air travel: holds
2X LX
1X MX
8 pentax lenses
2 converters
1 voigtlander body
2 lenses
1 xpan body
2 lenses
1 vivitar 283
1 vivitar 2500

no way to carry this lot on board with room for film too!

I use a hefty combination pelilock and the case is bright [well dirty]
yellow.

I also have a pelican 1500 that holds 5 more vivitar 283s, quantum battery
packs, polaroid back for LX, slaves, flashmeter and all my other lighting
goodies.

I have seen these literally being thrown on the plane [like a masochist I
always sit over the luggagehatch to watch them being
loaded]..so far so
good.the 1600 cost USD 30 on ebay!

I carry on a billingham hadley with 2x voigtlander bodies and more lenses +
FILM and if poss a Billingham 225 [normally has the pentax gear in] full of
FILM
If this isn't feasible then you can get an awful lot in a domke vest!
[doesn't count as carry on!]

just be sure to check in early enough for them to security check all
this..
Just my .2 euro worth

Moving to PZ-1p

2004-03-23 Thread Clive evans
Anthony
Interestingly I have just been going through the same thought process.
for me to it has also been whether to stay with Pentax or go Nikon [for
some reason Canon stuff is not for medon't know why?]
Diiferent reasoning however,I don't think I want to [or can afford] to
replace my entire lens lineup.my requirement
however is for TTL off camera fill flash with AF and motor wind so I can
work one handed in markets etc. [i shoot mainly travel stock]
In thinking Nikon, however, I had discounted F4 and F5 as being too damn
big a, the F100 however looks just rightand
it's certainly used by a lot of pros in my field [no not everyone has gone
the d word!]
The issue was easily decided for me [isn't that often the case?] by scoring
a PZ-1P with 28-105 powerzoom for GBP 170 on Ebay [something of a deal I
think] so the upshot is that is should work along well alongside my two
LXen whilst I dip my toe into this new [to me]technology [not sure if this
zoom will do the trick, is there a 20-35?]
Of course it will also work with my k and m lenses of which I have ten from
17-300 so big bonus!
So far the ony autofocus I have used is mt Ricoh GR-1s compact and Nikon
actiontouch!
This of course means that I am in the market for a AF360 flash and off
camera cords if any one has for sale?

Yes, couldn't wait for real one, and found a REALLY NICE copy here in
Paris, they are labelled MEKKO and are much nicer than the ones I have seen
on Ebay, it comes complete with a hard bottom padded insert that takes
three lenses or MX/Leica size bodies with lenses mounted, I initially
intended to have a voigtlander bessa+lens each end and a 21 and 85mm in the
centre compartment.
Two good pockets on the front and the big flap also has two pockets on the
outside and one on the inside.
Also a pocket on the back...
There is a really heavy duty shoulder pad and a separate hand carry strap
and waist belt [for thin people!]
Actually much better made than the last domke I saw!
So I brought two of these[always buy two, you never know ehn you may see
another one] from Paris two weeks ago, very pleased, and three days later
my wife gave me a brand new Billingham Hadley for my

kmount/leica 39 adapter

2004-01-20 Thread Clive evans
Hi all
Thanks for the input on this.
Two points:
Focussing not a problem as long the register is correct as it will be only
wide angles [sp.17mm fisheye and poss. 28mm] so zone focussing etc. is no
problem.
I actually have a spare t6 converter [the aperture linkage jammed and it
seemed cheaper to buy another rather than repair it] which sounds as though
it would certainly provide the kmount parts, as the Leica is asnadrd 39mm
thread should be fairly easy to replicate
So now all i need is who/ where to do the job [guys like this are not

has about ten camera stores selling mostly used but some new equpment, and
got to see/handle one for the first time..very cute,
but I still can't get my head around the fact that my beloved 18mm and 24mm
won't be WIDE any more, [I like WIDE, have a 17mm fisheye and a 15mm and
12mm for my voigtlander bessas to prove it!] so will be sticking with the
current LX/MX scenario and helping to prop up Fuji/Kodak film sales.
Whilst on the Paris scenario, the shops in blvd beaumarchais are
fascinating but REALLY EXPENSIVE [even without the strong euro factor] so
for anybody going , worth a stroll but no bargains to be had.
For example I just bought a Polaroid 195 on Ebay for USD 225, saw two there
marked up at EUR 395!
Talking of this I would give my eye teeth for an NPC polaroid back to fit
an LX,saw one on Ebay last yaer but missed it, anyone out there got one
that needs a home?
Also will provide a good home for an LX that is being cast aside in favour
of the digital march!

Both bodies were returned not just CLAed but with , in one case new rewind

The bodiesghad been clearly cleaned up and ere returned withALL the straps,

Apparently is two guys who used to run the service department of Pentax UK

HCB exhibition Paris

2003-06-19 Thread Clive evans
Had to fly up to Paris yesterday for a meeting, as I had the morning free I
decided to take in the Henri Cartier Bresson retrospective at the
Biblioteque Nationale.
Only one word to describe it:FABULOUS.
We have probably all seen many of these pictures in print, but seeing the
real thing is something else!
It's a huge exhibtion with something like 300 images, mostly printed to 24
X30 especially for the show by HCBs long time printer [if you read
Frenach get the back copy of the mag Photo repnses for a great interview
with him including how he has printed many of HCBs most famous images], as
some of the original prints from thee 30s, 40s and 50s were also on show,
great to see the difference!
The show is on until the 27th July, so if you are in or can get to Paris
...please go!
I understand that it will be In Barcelona in the autumn and then?

As an aside, it was intersting to note that the exhibition was busy, but I
saw only one other person carrying a camera..
I had my 2003 Leica [Ricoh Gr-1] with me and couldn't resist a marvellous
shot of a group of people watching a video juxtaposed against a huge print
of the well known Picnic on the Marne, of course the Ricoh does make a
tiny motor sound [pretty quiet though] which attracted the attaention of an
attendant, who informed me that photography was forbidden in the
gallery!I wonder what she would have said to
HCB?

Interestingly enough, as a Brit living in France for over ten years , I

USA, ] which produces a cerain sort of xenophobia [shared with the USA]
rooted in a fear of not speaking the language, not understanding the
currency, mistrusting the food, and a belief that there is no need to
travel as everything good is at home [does this sound familiar US readers?]
I think you may have more in common than you think..

I had a citroen 2v for some time ...great !The DS convertible and

Tripod collars

2003-03-30 Thread Clive Evans
Hi folks
I have a 300m f4 M*, great lens but really needs a tripod
mountespecially if I use it witha X1.4 converter.
Same problem as when I use my 200m F4M with a short tube for
closeups
There must be a 3rd party tripod colar that you can use on a lens, tube or
extender somewhereanyone any thoughts?
Thanks

two solutions:
CHEAP
40mm f1.9 pancake lens attached to [well part of really] Canonet G111
rangefinder, $50-$100 on Ebay or $50 more for a black one like
minefast quiet super lens takes your Pentax 49mm filters with a
48/49 stepup ring.
EXPENSIVE
Ricoh GR-1, superb bly built pont and shhot with full manual override with
a 28mm f2.8 that is incredible[also takes 30.5 filters]

Voiglander sytstem

2003-03-25 Thread Clive evans
Yes I know we all use Pentaxes and are therefore SLR people , however I am
thinking of supplementing my kit with a small RF selection and of course
the Voigtlander kit looks good pricewise, I'm paticularly taken with the
superwide 15mm and 12mm which seem to me to be a different panoramic option
[by cropping] than an Xpan
Anybody out there have any reports on using the system and ANY of the
lenses [not just these two?]..I have of course been to
www.cameraquest.com..

Incident/Reflected light metering

2003-03-25 Thread Clive evans
Ok , what I was taught doing my city and guilds commercial photography in
1969 was that the goal is to meter for the end
result..therfore if the finished product is a print
[viewed by reflected light ] then to calcualte exposure using areflected
light method [grey card, zone system etc. all are based on the perceived
apperance of a mid-tone in a print..]
If of course the end product is viewed by transmitted light [a
transparency] then the perceived apprance of the most important higlight
is the goal and therfore a maesurement using transmitted [incident] light
id the key, as in this case the meter is measuring the light transmitted
THROUGH the incident dome/invercone etc.]
Makes sense I think!!

Sreet Photos

Strret photography seems to be much simpler the less you look like a REAL
photographer [think about Cartier Bresson with a a little Leica back in the
days when REAL photogs used 4X5 Speed Graphics...
My favourite tools are a 25 year old Canon [sorry] Canonet G111
rangefinder, inconspicuos, fast 40mm f1.7 lens about 20
times cheaper on Ebay than a Leica witha 35mm to do the same job!] A 40mm
pancake lens with its own body!
The other nifty acqusition for this stuff is a Ricoh Gr-1S super compact
with a 28mm f2.8 this falls in to the same bracket as
the Olympus XA that i used to use [still have] from 20 years ago, super
quality that fits in your pocket and doesn't LOOK too serious!
I always try and make a point of saying HELLO [after the first
snapso now I get a loooking into camera version] and
THANKYOU which also usaually gets another smile!
Load any of these with TriX or CN400 and off you go!

Hi People
Interesting times.and I've just finally acquired an LX
to join the 2 MXs, ME super and bag of Pentax primes I've had since the
80s! Looks like I NOW haven't got ANY excuse to ignore the digital world
any longer ...

I need some help on using the LX [or ME super?] with an AF280T for fill
flash..basically I want the flash to underexpose by -.7
of a stop [but the camera exposing normally] to get a better fill light
ratio..I'm sure someone out there knows how?

I also need to find someone to overhaul my MX motor
drive...

And finally, does anyone have source of LX strap lugs [I want to modify an
LX gripA LX2000 style] oh and whats the best tool
to shape the grip with?

Thanks for the daily enntertainment...is this legal?
