small. The whole interface is Pentax through & through.

This came as quite a surprise. I have been using Photo.net to store
most of my images that I intend to show here or share with others for
years, but this is my first photo of the day.

BTW, I chose another image from the same shoot for my PESO here of the
Sphinx or False Hummingbird moth, although this was among those chosen
for my GESO of the moth shoot.

That's called "randonn?e" or "audax". The real hardcore don't use
tents and sleeping bags, but sleep in their clothes in bus shelters or
on the floor of halls.

The most famous event is Paris-Brest-Paris (PBP). One of our very own
PDMLers is doing it this year - 16-20 August. Perhaps he'll show
himself and we can follow his exploits online.

Beautiful light and colors as well as excellent panning work in the
action shots. The morning light on the tents - especially the first
image of them - is wonderful.

Re: Geso :Tour De Farms

2015-08-01 Thread Don Guthrie
Thanks Igor, the tent at sunset seems to a favorite anytime I show
these. So thanks to PDML folks for confirming that.

The organized tents are indeed part of paid service so that when
riders hit town the riders are directed to their spot where tents
sleeping bags hot showers and I maybe food is waiting for them. The
purveyors are called the "Pork Bellies" the pig being the unofficial
mascot due in no small part to my sister -in-law's art. I think the
price is around $100 per day but the hot showers alone are almost
worth that after riding 60 miles in humid Iowa.

I went by this spot at noon just after they were set up. I visualized
how this would look at sunset and returned with the K-3 & 50mm and
went on to the other two camps pictured. The less organized camp was a
riding club who reserved the spot. By the way many riders carry their
sleeping bags etc on the bikes and sleep where they drop.

I especially like the photo of the tent-camp with the (morning?)
sun shining on it (52329).

While I see one photo with different tents, I am surprised to see such a
uniform camp in that photo. Is it some type of a tent-hotel, provided
by some organization/company?

It's Forsythia Season in New Jersey, and they are in bloom all over,
including my yard.
Remarkably, the stat highway department has planted stands of
Forsythia in the median between the traffic lanes on our local
highway. This creates a spectacular show during this time of year,
and the rest of the year the bushes provide a visual barrier between
the lanes and helping to block the headlights from oncoming traffic at
night.

That is a fine album with a lot of strong images. The colors are
surprisingly rich, especially given England's grey image.

You may have improved since then (I'm not qualified to judge), but you
clearly had the eye and the talent way back then.

Re: What does everyone now use?

2015-03-21 Thread Don Guthrie
Hello my name is Don and I am a cameraholic. Ironically my 1st serious
film camera was a Ricoh. I bought it because I had access to a couple
of Pentax screw mount lenses. When I went digital I went Pentax because
of those same lenses.

Today I use K-3 & K-5 and now Q7. But those big boys seem a little bulky
for air & bus travel so I ventured into M4/3 with the Olympus line. So
today Pentax 60% Oly 40%. Too many lenses for both systems to list. (see
1st words of this post) BTW I never go shooting with one of each - too
many differences in buttons & menus. I get confused between the 2 Pentax
camera because the back-button focus is not the same place on both cameras.

Frankly after they are in Lightroom I never look at which camera took
the photo except when I am posting to PUG or the Annual.

With all this equipment I should be better than I am, But its just a hobby.

Currently using a K3, with a K20D as backup.
Since my Spotmatic days in the late 60's I've had an ES, MX, PZ-P, PZ1P,
MZ-S, Olympus Stylus Epic, Optio S, *ist D & K10D.
Recently added a Nikon Coolpix P7100 mainly due to its lightweight and
optical viewfinder.

The K3 is responsible for about 98% of my current shooting.

Paul you really hit upon my problem. I just don't like phones for
taking photos. They don't feel right in my hands and I feel silly using
it that way. I also don't look for or see pictures if I don't have a
camera with me. And yes I have missed photos because I did not take out
my phone.

I guess I also like the controls and the option to use different lenses
even if I never do. But I do envy the talent some folks have for taking
great phone pictures.

I have seen the effects of our local termites. They can hollow out wood

have carpenter ants here. But they are easier to spot as they leave
behind piles of sawdust.

I think these are cathedral termites. We passed an unbelievable number of

Re: Peso 100 years of farming.

2015-02-28 Thread Don Guthrie
Thanks everyone for your nice comments. There was a field of wind
generators I just liked the line of barn to the one. This old farm had
gone from producing hay to electric power. Each tower plus its service
road takes several acres of prime farmland out of production - a loss of
hundreds of bushels of corn every year per windmill. They also kill
eagles. But this plus ethanol production is becoming the Iowa mainstay.
Progress I guess. There are so many fields of windmills we have started
naming them. This is the Lundgren Wind Farm

Interesting contrasts. Are you implying that the wind generator shows 100
years of progress? At least the fence poles look 100 years old.

I like how this one turned out.

The crystal was very small - about 2mm in diameter so there was a lot of
extension (250mm) between the K3 and the reverse mounted DFA 50mm f2.8
macro. For this image I used two flashes - as usual, one beneath the
crystal and in addition a small manual flash on an optical slave
trigger, which was held above the crystal to give it a more shimmering look.

I have a few not as good images to work with and then its back to
waiting for some snow...

Comments always appreciated.

That's interesting and nicely done. A bit too busy for me, but that's not your
fault.

It would have been nice if you'd included the edge of the table, showing some
of the food and perhaps a knife or something breaking the edge. Still lifes of
this purpose were used not only to show off the patron's wealth and good taste,
but also to make a moral, allegorical point about the transitory nature of
wealth, power and earthly pleasure. To do this the painter often showed
something balancing precariously on the edge of the table, about to fall.

Shot at the The Henry Ford's holiday nights thingy last night, where historical
holiday scenes are presented. The hard spot lights on the food did not make for
great lighting but a moderate amount of processing helps.

I think the gritty look works for the photo and contrasts it to the

left or slightly lower. This version has a more somber mood. Always fun
looking at your photos the terrain is so much different than my locale.

I converted this to B&W to add to the color which I intend to keep.
I'd appreciate your comments on this version. Not as a comparison to the color,
but
as a B&W. I intentionally gave a gritty look to the grass and found I like it.
I like that it, also, emphasizes the array of various size rocks strewn about.

Thanks, much!

'morning all,

Being fans of Tony Hillerman's novels, my wife and I had Shiprock on
our 'must visit' list during our USA trip.

We, together with our two sons, had planned to arrive in the late
afternoon, scout around for a good photographic location and then sit
back with a glass of New Mexico red and wait for the sunset. As it
happened, getting out of Farmington (where we were staying) took an
eternity so we arrived much later than we had hoped. Beggars couldn't
be choosers, so this was the best we could do.

Disclosure: I got rid of some wires crossing in front of the rock, my
justification being that had I climbed a fence and moved a bit closer,
the wires wouldn't have been visible anyway...

G'day all

One of the problems when travelling is that you're often not at a
location at the time of day you'd like.

I would have liked to have been at Cape Otway in the early AM or late
afternoon but instead I was there around midday. I like the
perspective in this shot but the colour version, while a nice record
shot, lacked a bit of oomph - so I tried this B&W version:

Re: Thanksgiving Flower Small geso

2014-11-20 Thread Don Guthrie
Thanks Igor, I agree the 1st one is a little more dramatic. There is
also a variety commonly called Easter Cactus, they can be distinguished
by the leaf pattern. I think they can all be induced to bloom anytime of
year by keeping them dry and in the dark for a period of time. I have
not heard the term decembrist... interesting.

Hi Don,

Nice flowers!
I agree with others that the first photo seems to be the best of the
three. For my taste, the second one would have benefited from a bit more
space around it, especially at the bottom. But that's my taste.

My mom has had such flowers for many years (and still has) at her home.
The interesting thing is the name. In Russia they are called
"decembrist", primarily because they bloom in December.
I also remember somebody in Texas using the same name.
I googled, and found some references to that name being used in Brazil.
But it looks like most people in the US call it "thanksgiving"
or "christmas" cactus.

more so I will look forward to your pix. I forgot I was experimenting
with Watermarks & picked the wrong default. I deplore their necessity.

Those are gorgeous, Don ! I'd pick a favorite but I like them all a lot.
I'm hoping my draecena will give me that hat trick this year...
should know in another week or 10 days. crossed fingers appreciated.

suggestion for watermark for less intrusiveness but still helpful for ?
protection - a file saved as .png with transparent background , reduce
white font to less 50% opacity then outine the font.

Remember what happened with my watermarks:-) I don't use *print*marks
anymore, of course.

best,
ann

The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church (Ged?chtniskirche, to Berliners) was built
in the 1890s, and virtually destroyed in a bombing raid in 1943. It was rebuilt
in the early 1960s, preserving the damaged original tower as a reminder against
war.

A close-up of the new sanctuary and tower:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17906465

The buildings in context:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17902225

There is a very moving exhibit on the ground floor of the tower, and the new
sanctuary is gorgeous inside--well worth a visit.

South I assume. Odd juxtaposition of racer and path made for a clever
