Kiron mae a lot of lenses for Vivitar so it wouldn't surprise me.

Well, that was my first thought, and I bought the lens because I thought
that it might be the Vivitar which is reputed to be on par with the
A100/2.8 Macro. But the Vivitar is a 1:2 Macro, and goes to 1:1 with an
extension tube. The f/2,8 Lens is the 1:1, at least at Vivitar.

Tamron has a 1:1 90/2,5 Macro, but the lenses look too different from

Now I am thinking Kiron or something like that...

Another pack that has not been mentioned in the Beseler Sedona 920. I use
one for my Kiev88 gear. I like the upper compartment as I can keep the prism
and 250mm lens mounted on the body and it fits with no problem. The lower
will hold several lenses and other items.

For my 35mm, I have a Lowepro MiniTreker. A good bag but I never could get
the medium format equipment to fit.

The biggest problem I have with the Photo Trekker is the tendency to pack
way more equipment than I actually need to bring, since it has so much
usable space. I actually went back to using the Micro Trekker since that
made me select equipment more carefully.

It come down to a question of hardness vs. sheen on the surface. If you want

Another possibility is a clear surface coating (similar to auto clear coat)

Beside this, I also suspect the metering is not quite right either.
I can put aperture on, say 8, on both Ricoh and Pentax lenses, and
the cameras give different light meter readings.

These lead to me to see the Ricoh, at least this lens I have, as
compatible with Pentax bodies only for the mount.

Also, on the aperture ring one has a P mark and other has a (A)P mark.
What do they mean ? Is that the same as the pentax-A lenses?

The lenses with only the P label will not work correctly with auto setting
on Pentax cameras. The ones with the (A)P should as they normally have the
connections for both. Any Ricoh P or third party (A)P mount lens should be
used with caution (or not used) on Pentax AF bodies.

Re: Rikenon 50mm matchup?

2002-01-15 Thread JeffW.

Ricoh had their P to equal the Pentax A. However, the P was activated
by a small pin that falls about where the Pentax AF connector falls. So,
unless the lens is a third party that has Pentax contacts and the Ricoh
pin, it won't work on Pentax bodies in any modes requireing the A setting.
And be very careful using this on ANY Pentax AF body as the pin can get
stuck in the AF connection and be difficult (or impossible) to remove. Bad a
very bad experience with this.

I just switched to an MZ-M from my trusty K-1000 a few months ago and have
been VERY slow in reading the manual. Tonight I just got to the automatic
aperture adjustment on the lens. While my Ricoh Rikenon 50mm lens has no
 A
setting on the aperture ring it does have a P which I assume is for
Program. I set it to P but nothing happened, it is still acting like
I should be setting the aperture by hand. The camera is not responding to
 this setting.

 individual
carts for the inks (a major bugbear in 6 colour printers like the 1290)
and the inks are pigmented and shouldn't fade for many years.

Yes, IMO it has become much easier to get a nice print. But your particular
interpretation of a decent print will determine whether the improvement
is good enough. Printing of colour images still seems much better than
trying to print BW - BW images tend to end up with colour casts.

Two things. I find that the amount of ink left in the different colors in an
ink cartridge to be about equal when the printer indicates the cart. is
empty. I dissected a couple of used 870 carts and decided not to worry
anymore. I find I get my best BW prints on the matte papers. I don't know
why but they seem to show the color cast less and be easier to get to a
neutral tone.

Anybody else have this type problem or have any clues?

Nenad,

As a US citizen with many friends in the military, I wish sending in ground
troops would not be needed but in this case you are correct. The ONLY way to
be positive the job is done and not cause indiscriminate death is with
ground troops. This will still entail loss of life on both side. The loss of
American military lives is what our leaders have been unwilling to risk for
fear it would not be taken by the average citizen. In the long run, US
military casualties might outnumber terrorist deaths. But if it is not done,
then the US civilian casualties will continue to occur.

And the US must, as we have historically done, help restore the country
afterward so there is something for people to return to and build from.
Otherwise, we are just the next in a long series of conquerors. I know in
the current mood many (from the US) will disagree but this is how you make
allies out of enemies.

I get it. So what you're saying is, if there's, oh, say, a militant leftist
organization that blows up a shopping center, and they happened to be based
in a house five streets from where you live, then the rest of us would be
justified in firebombing your whole neighborhood and killing your wife and
kids? Is that about what you're suggesting?

 --Mike

While I would not advocate destroting the entire country, we cannot be
afraid of every non-combatant casuality. To use your analogy, destroying the
house five blocks away wouldn't be justified but destroying the house next
door that loaned him the car to drive there and helped him hide the
explosives would be justified. Eliminating the neighborhood committee that
invited him to live there as long as he didn't blow up thier malls would
also be justified.

Re: OT: Vivitar 70-210/3.5 series 1 opinions wanted

2001-09-05 Thread JeffW.

A good lens and very good value if you can get it for under $100. I have it
in both the M42 and K-mounts. A bit on the larger/heavier side but it
balances well with a K body or and older Ricoh. I like the 67mm (1st)
version and the 70-210 2.8~4 (3rd) best. The 62mm 3.5 I tried didn't impress
me as much. I match mine up with a Series 1 28-90 and that is my manual body
zoom collection.

JeffW.

I'm going to buy this lens, maybe. I'd like to have some comments on it,
someone of you probably owns this lens or has used it.
Somewhere I read that it's quite heavy big lens..is that true?
I have now only a 135mm lens in my camera bag and sometimes it's not enough.

Hmm.. or if there is some kind of way to make my wife understand that I
really need something like Pentax 80-200/f2.8 or 300/2.8 ;)

Re: What is Pentax equipment?

2001-08-31 Thread JeffW.

I have a silly question.

If the guidelines, in place for at least a couple of years, stated that
Themed submissions required Pentax lens or body and Open could be any K or
M42, why is there even a problem? A submission that didn't meet the existing
guidelines should have been politely refused and everyone could get on with
their lives. No offence to anyone (since I'm not sure who is doing the
gallery) but it sounds like a screw-up at the Gallery end and doesn't
require a major arguement about what is/isn't Pentax equipment.

Just so people know, I have 2 Pentax bodies, 2 other K-mount bodies, 6 M42
bodies (no Pentax) and three medium format bodies. I have lenses that are
Pentax, Vivitar and many other brands. I can meet whatever guidelines are
set if I choose to submit anything again. But why change the rules?

Re: 'Light panels', flatbeds and film

2001-08-19 Thread JeffW.

Clive,

As the user of both an older Minolta Scan Dual (35mm) and an Epson 1640SU
Photo flatbed scanner I would have to say I don't think it will work very
well. To me, even when the 1640 is used with the film holder and
transparency adapter I don't like the quality on 35mm. I use it for scans of
6x6 and old 6x7 negatives and save the 35mm for the film scanner.

The other potential problem is the way the 1640 seems to work. When scanning
film, the regular bulb is off and only the transparency adapter is providing
light. I guess to do this with another scanner you would have to disable the
bulb.

JeffW.

I've seen recently some small, low-profile lightboxes - just like
ordinary lightboxes, really, only thinner. There's a suggestion from
SNIP
extra, I'm thinking of giving it a try, but before I do, has anyone here
tried it, and if so, with what degree of success?

I have never used the -7 but have a -5n and have had PZ-1 -1p cameras and
have never noticed a big difference in AF speed when the same lens is used

-5n best.

I think the big question is how much will you be using the various program
settings. If you shoot and want lots of manual control and a traditional
layout then go with the -5n. If you want to shoot mainly in the program
modes and prefer buttons over dials then go with the -7.

For faster/better AF under less than perfect conditions, go with the fastest
glass you can afford (or are willing buy/carry). The speed of the lens and
the available light always seem to affect the AF speed more than the
differences between bodies.
