Politics in the US is insane. It appears almost rational, however, compared
with what has been going on in England and Europe after the Brexit vote.

Is this right? The PM resigned, and then the Brexit leaders in his party,
Johnson and Gove, said they are not interested in the job, leaving the field
open to a steon Remain Supporter. Farange, who started it all, said "My
work here is done," and resigned the leadershipof his party., but remains a
member of the European Parliament. The Labour Leader won't quit, so
everyone else in his party leadership quit instead. No one on either side
of the referendum made any plans for what to do if Leave won, and the
current PM refuses to do anything, leaving it up to his successor, who may
be opposed to leaving. Europe wants Britain to leave now, but Britain
refuses to do anything. Even if they do, the Scots may have veto power over
the UK's withdrawal, and everyone in Northern Ireland appears to be applying
for Irish passports.

This is a rude analysis of the situation:

I tried the DA35 on the K-1 shooting against a lighter colored background,
and yes, it does vignette a bit. Not quite down to APS levels of crop, but
you only get about 40mm of unobstructed field of view (unless you crop your
photos square).

For your amusement, some photos from the new sushi restaurant in Felton:

I'll just call the vignetting an artistic effect and go with that. It
probably cost Instagram several weeks of engineering to add a filter that
does the same thing.

I have been dithering. Just not sure if I want/need the 15-30, 24-70, 70-200
lenses. I ultimately descended into the depths of analytic consideration: I
constructed a spreadsheet-type layout of my current and possible new lenses for
APS-C, FF, and 645 cameras, and then stared at that for hours. Trying to
anticipate what I would take on my next few planned trips, how I would carry
it, what shots are “must have”, etc. And at least for now I do have all three
bodies. Each has unique features, I already have a fairly broad set of lenses
for the 645 and APS-C, but not for the K-1. Particularly if I want AW and
quick-shift AF.

So throughout the last few weeks as I have been agonizing over this issue, B&H
helpfully, through the magic of cookies and other modern magic, has been
popping up thumbnail teasers of their ongoing special deals. Throughout, the
24-70/2.8 has been right at $1300, the 70-200/2.8 right at $1800. This morning
was the same. I clicked through to B&H and was shocked to see the 70-200/2.8
now at $2300!

I jumped over to Adorama, their prices are still $1300 and $1800. I ordered
both lenses. I’ll worry next week about whether I will keep one or both, but it
seemed that if I waited it might cost me $500 or more above what I had been
expecting.

Last night we went up towards the end of Empire Grade (between Jamison Creek
and Lockheed) to try some night photography. I wanted to try out both
astrotracer and the Rokinon 24/1.4 with the K-1.

This might be the nicest shot photographically. I was mostly looking to
learn the gear, but it's nice when you get something half decent out of the
attempt.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/27430114234/in/album-7215766773260871
4/

This images is a real cipher, because when I look at it in lightroom, the
burn-in from the adjustment brush is a lot more even. At first I got the
weird artifact even in loupe mode, but not in develop. I've gotten rid of it
in loupe mode, but it is showing up in flickr.

Full album shot with the 24/1.4 and the 15-30, some in astrotracer here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157667732608714/with/280440222

If fluidr cooperates, you can see them with exif data here:
http://www.fluidr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157667732608714/with/2804402227
5/

I also had a go at photographing Andromeda, shot with the takumar (bayonet)
1:2.5 135mm (actually Luiz's copy of the lens)
A* 200/2.8
FA 80-200/2.8
Tamron Adaptall 300/2.8 (some in crop mode)

http://www.fluidr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157670435249006

Since it was an experimental session, I've got a range of exposures with the
different lenses, I also showed some without cropping in lightroom to show
the field of view of each lens.

This isn't a true story, though it is strange enough that it could be:

The US standard railroad gauge (distance between
the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That’s an
exceedingly odd number.

Why was that gauge used?

Because that’s the way they built them in England,
and English expatriates built the US Railroads.

Why did the English build them like that?

Because the first rail lines were built by the
same people who built the pre-railroad tramways, and
that’s the gauge they used.

Why did “they” use that gauge then?

Because the people who built the tramways used
the same jigs and tools that they used for building
wagons, which used that wheel spacing.

Okay! Why did the wagons have that particular
odd wheel spacing?

Well, if they tried to use any other spacing,
the wagon wheels would break on some of the old,
long distance roads in England, because that’s
the spacing of the wheel ruts.

So who built those old rutted roads?

Imperial Rome built the first long distance
roads in Europe (and England) for their legions. The
roads have been used ever since.

And the ruts in the roads?

Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts,
which everyone else had to match for fear of
destroying their wagon wheels.
Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome, they
were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing.

The United States standard railroad gauge of 4
feet, 8.5 inches is derived from the original
specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot.
And bureaucracies live forever. So the next time you
are handed a specification and wonder what horse’s
ass came up with it, you may be exactly right,
because the Imperial Roman war chariots were made
just wide enough to accommodate the back ends of two
war horses. Now the twist to the story…

When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its
launch pad, there are two big booster rockets
attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These
are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are
made by Thiokol at their factory at Utah. The
engineers who designed the SRBs would have preferred
to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to
be shipped by train from the factory to the launch
site. The railroad line from the factory happens to
run through a tunnel in the mountains. The SRBs had
to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly
wider than the railroad track, and the railroad
track, as you now know, is about as wide as two
horses’ behinds.

So, a major Space Shuttle design feature of what
is arguably the world’s most advanced transportation
system was determined over two thousand years ago by
the width of a horse’s ass. … and you thought
being a HORSE’S ASS wasn’t important!

A simple mirrorless without ibis makes for an easier conversion. Something
to consider. Get a Sony nex with adapter and look at it as an ir back.
That's what I would do since the optical viewfinder becomes useless with
full spectrum.

RE: On the subject of Infrared

2016-06-10 Thread Mark Stringer
I had Lifepixel convert my Lumix GX8 and sold the Oly E-PL5. I went full
spectrum. I bought into the mirrorless conversion for ease of use. I
cannot get it straight if Pentax live view would work as well. I read some
articles and I have a K-x. It is moot for now tho. You may know better
since you have experience.

I have two really good lens and can adapt my Pentax lenses for fun. The GX8
has a bright lcd and bright viewfinder. For outdoor use I think this will
help me a lot.

kolarivision.com and precisioncamera.com and lifepixel.com all do
conversions.

Back when I had a working IR K-5, I bought a large sheet of plastic IR
filter, about 1/8" thick to make filters for speedlights and studio flashes
so that they would only transmit in IR. It was much cheaper than buying the
3" squares of gel from B&H. If anybody needs some, in order to have an IR
only light source, let me know.

If I were to do something like convert on of my old bodies to IR (or full
spectrum), who is doing a good, reasonably priced, job on Pentax DSLRs these
days?

My preference for an IR body would be to have the body be full spectrum, and
if I need IR only, or visible only, just put a filter in front of the lens.
With live view, IR only is much less of an issue. I had some difficulty
finding IR block filters. Does anyone have specific recommendations for
such?

Magnum is finishing up another 'Square Photo Sale' … 6x6 inch sized prints from
the portfolios of their photographers … and today's the last day for this
round. There are about nine hours to go…

http://shop.magnumphotos.com/?a_aid=magnumphotos&chan=nlshop061016&utm_source=Magnum+Photos+Shop&utm_campaign=b64719741b-Shop_NL_6_10_2016&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_18bc3c957a-b64719741b-2070457&mc_cid=b64719741b&mc_eid=464f0cfa59

I've bought a few of these from the last such sale. They're exquisite hand-held
size gems. Even if you don't find anything or don't want to buy, it's very fun
to look through the photos.

I found one in this round (Werner Bischof's two monks in Tokyo) that I had to
have—I remember that shrine well and had my own magical moment there 25 years
ago. Ach, can so much time really have flown past?

I think that if my goal were IR, and I had a K20, I'd sell it and buy a K-r
(even a K-x) or just about anything newer. I loved the UI on my K20, but
once I bought a K-x I hardly ever used my K20 outside "the studio", unless
it was raining out. The images from the K-x were that much better. The K-r
is a K-x with every shortcoming improved. I'll be putting my K-5ii up for
sale in the next few days, and I'll probably be lucky to get $300 for it. At
that, in many ways, it'll outperform just about every other Pentax short of
a K-1. The difference in performance between a K-5 and a K20 is hard to
believe.

If you're shooting with a K-100, you can just about get away with IR without
doing a conversion, just putting an IR pass filter on it because the IR
block filter on it is so weak.

When I was getting my first K-5 repaired, I had them convert it to full
spectrum IR. It was lots of fun, unfortunately, the camera died shortly
thereafter for other reasons. You can do lots of fun things with a full
spectrum camera and an IR flash.

Live view on the k20d is basic and shuts off after 3 minutes. I would read
up on the live view mode before choosing the k20d. I have a micro 4/3/s Oly
E-PL5 and a Lumix GX8. These mirrorless cameras make IR easy. I have a
k20d and a Kx. Seems the Kx would be the better choice but I don't need
another IR camera but I want to use my Pentax lens. I had the Gx8
converted because I wanted a brighter LCD and it has a bright electronic
viewfinder also. I have a new K3II and some very fine lens but have spent
most of my time doing IR and learning to use GIMP. I love IR like I loved
the old B&W film days. Both have instant surrealism which I think is harder
to achieve with color. These days any digital image can be made surreal but
all of the mundane subjects I am tired of are new again in IR.

Another from Kyoto, last January.

Between nonomiya shrine and the back of tenryuji is a walk through Sagano
bamboo grove.

According to a couple of friends who were there late last year, in November
it's still popular and crowded despite being so late in the season. However
by January the temperature around Kyoto has dropped to nearly freezing, and
there aren't that many tourists bothering to come here.

RE: OT: Telemarketers

I set up a MagicJack using the same number I've had for years. All calls go
to voice mail. Anything important they leave a message. The telemarketers
and scammers never leave a message. I get an email with the voice message
attached. All other calls are handled on our cell phones. The house phone
is heavily muted. It can be heard, you can call out but actually we don't
use it at all. Much cheaper than ATT landline. We've been operating this
way for about 5 years. I don't answer my cell phone unless I recognize the
caller. Of course we all have smartphones and that costs a fortune. ATT dsl
costs a fortune as does cable internet. We have ATT dsl for now. Fiber
optic has not made it to us yet.

we don't know much about them. Let us hope the Hittite tablets waiting to be

Re: GESO: Yuma County Colorado tornadoes, Saturday May 7, 2016

2016-05-11 Thread Mark Stringer
Thanks for that! Scary. The stuff my nightmares are made of. Really
good work.

On 5/9/2016 12:47 PM, Darren Addy wrote:

I had my most successful chase day ever on Saturday (saw 3 tornadoes),
but not my most photogenic photographs.

I left North Platte, NE at 4 PM hoping to get to Holyoke or Wray, CO
to see some Colorado Front Range tornadoes. Got to the rest area at
Julesburg, CO (on Interstate 80) and grabbed a free Colorado road map.
Then proceeded south of Julesburg on Hwy 385. A line of supercells was
already forming just west of 385 and they were moving to the N/NNW as
they were close the surface low. My target was the southernmost storm
that was moving N/NNE.

The cell just north of that one had been tornado warned once already
(as I was leaving Julesburg) but I did not want to target it for long,
fearing I would be run over by the hail core of the storm coming up
behind it. Still, I thought I would keep an eye on it as I went by it
on my way to the more southerly cell.

I saw what appeared to be a Rear Flank Downdraft (RFD) cut in that
storm as I came along side. When it was clear that a funnel was
forming I pulled off the highway (there was no shoulder) and jumped
out to take pics. Here is the tornado, which I believe is in contact
with the ground (but can't be positive because of a hill in between
us).

https://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/26880136486/in/dateposted-public/

While I was taking the photos of this tornadoes entire life cycle, the
CSWR convoy of radar trucks went flying north past me up the highway,
with a bunch of chasers following them. ( http://www.cswr.org/ ) Their
target did not affect mine, I still thought that the storm approaching
Wray would be the most interesting of the day. It was.

The tornado that made national news began over the city of Wray as a
tiny little funnel in the sky that I captured as I was traveling back
through Wray after exploring a bit to its west. In the amount of time
it took me to reach the intersection of Hwy 385 again, it has already
reached the ground with a needle-like appearance:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/26847394921/

Quickly it morphed into a larger tornado:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/26309615994/

Fortunately, this part of the front range is sparsely populated, but I
did see one house along the highway that lost its roof, drove over
downed powerlines across the highway (driving around a 5th wheel
trailer that had been deposited directly in the highway) and captured
this image of the receding tornado with some parked semi trailers that
it tossed around.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/26915145455/

I later saw a 3rd tornado out my passenger window, but by the time I
got off the road it had already lifted. I have no idea how long I was
oblivious to it as I drove along side it, but it was a good couple of
miles away and moving away from me.

All in all, I was very happy with my forecast, my route, and my
targeting. I only wish I had gotten some more photogenic images,
rather than documentary ones.

A small gallery here. I didn’t keep these full size as the vignetting at
question is visible, or not, even at reduced image size.

The first image is from the 24/2.0 [Yes Larry, NOT 1.4] to show the scene. Then
one or more shots from the DA 15mm, 35mm macro, 40mm, and 55mm and one from the

The K-1 locks focus great in daylight. Haven’t had enough experience with other
light to say for sure, but it makes action sports shooting easy. Hid behind the
corner of the house with the K-1 and the 150-450 and shot the kids shooting
hoops. That lens is a nice fit with the k-1 and battery grip. Good balance for
handheld shooting. If I was doing this in earnest, I’d use a monopod and shoot
at ISO 400 or 800, but not a problem without it. All these are at ISO 1600,
which is nice and clean with this camera.

One cool thing that happened is that I scored on a very inexpensive (as

expandable types with replaceable drives and stuff. This is close to the
ideal system for processing photos. Unfortunately, due to Apple's
attitudes towards backward compatibility, all sorts of things won't work
with it, like my thunderbolt monitor, and most PCIE USB 3 cards. As
such, despite it being a windfall, it has also incurred a fair amount of
cost in both money and time.

On Saturday I started having issues with my septic system. There is a
slight chance that it might be repaired for only a few thousand dollars,
but the most probable outcome is looking like $40,000 for an engineered
system.

Yesterday morning, Zab was woken by a thump in the front yard. By the
time she got tot he front yard, the perpetrator had driven off, but she
was amused to find the Narrow Bridge sign from 50' up the road on our
front stairs. Another day of repairs for me, but on some levels
amusing, particularly if she wasn't the one who had to do the work. What
she did not notice was the caved in driver's door on my miata, or the
way the retaining wall for the driveway collapsed after the miata was
pushed into it.

While talking with Ray, my contractor who does great work for a
reasonable price, and who I have good working rapport with, mentioned

pay better than he is earning on his own, plus which has benefits.

Over the weekend we started hearing the distinctive scrabbling of
wildlife in portions of the house where we don't want wildlife.

Re: OT: Monitor Specs

2016-04-24 Thread Mark Stringer

Mark
I recently bought an Asus PA248Q from B&H. I can't elaborate as to why
except that I think is was a good low price choice. I got into specs
but quickly tired as I think my recent camera decisions (i.e., K3-II in
lieu of the K-1) were at the forefront. I also quickly realized that
professional monitors, which may be a requirement for you, were not for
me. I'll do my own prints on an Epson and can redo if not satisfied.
I've always thought monitors were a bit quirky as well as unreliable. I
have two monitors at work and have never been able to calibrate them but
who cares if an Excel spreadsheet looks a little different from one to
another.

I haven't set my new monitor up yet so I can't offer a review. My
household is in disarray at the moment with the passing of my wife's
mother (Sat evening) who lived with us. She was in hospice care for over
a year and a full time job for my wife (an RN). It is a good thing
really as she was 94 and suffering.

Happy hunting!

I'm thinking about upgrading my current monitor. What specs should I be
looking at?

I'm considering -

IPS panel technology

Minimum 1900 x 1080 / 1900 x 1200 preferred. I am only looking for a 24
inch monitor given to be part of a two monitor system, so I doubt I will
be able to get much greater resolution without going larger.

Anti glare Screen

Digital input (DVI or HDMI) (should be a given but I have run into a few
with VGA only.)

I don't know what to make of these stats:

Contrast ratio. When I calibrate my monitors the iDisplay utility
reports a contrast ration of about 900:1 for the better monitor I'm
using and about 850:1 for the older TN monitor. When shopping I see
quoted figures from 1000:1 to 2,000,000:1 on monitors that don't seem
much different in price or class. Not sure what to make of this spec.

Percent of gamut. Percent of what gamut? sRGB? More is better?

Brightness in terms of CD/CM2. Is more better? Ive read that a
calibrated monitor should be about 122 CD/CM2. Everything I have looked
at way exceeds that. In a couple cases users have commented that the
monitor is too bright and they can't dim it enough to accurately
calibrate it. But that could be a problem with the controls on that
specific model. Any suggested target level?

That's all I'm looking at - anything I should consider but am oblivious
to? Any recommendations or warnings about brands?

Thanks

Mark

Hopefully the sealing is still good. I fully intend on finding out in
the next thunderstorm we get.

I decided to send them my 12-24 finally at the same time after letting
it collect dust for a couple of years. I had heard incorrectly that
they couldn't be serviced, but I figured I would at least find out.
Turns out they can service them, but not in America. The round trip to
Japan was a month and a half and it came back looking like a brand new
lens along with my K-3. I took some test shots and after a little
focus adjustment it looks like the old 12-24 I once knew and loved.
They left me with the gouged up hood from where it hit the pavement
though lol. Think pentax wants me to buy a new lens hood? :)

This experience has tempted me to send anything outside of warranty
directly to Japan for service. It was $250 to rebuild the lens.
Strangely I don't think they replaced the rear part of the lens so I
guess my self repair on the stripped screw threads is holding pretty
well.

The K-3 from precision was another story. I sent them a K-3, a 20-40
and a 55-300, both of which were decentered. The 55-300 came back
decentered even worse. I had no hopes that they would fix my 20-40
properly. I complained. Pentax sent me brand new lenses that were much
better. The K-3 came back and the AF points in the viewfineder were
completely in the wrong place. I sent it back. When it came back the
camera was overexposing in daylight by about two stops. Something was
miscalibrated. Back it went that day. It seems fine, but I haven't had
any broad daylight to test it with. I would hope that they wouldn't
let the same problem happen twice.

Total repair time: 2 months. Not great at all. Not after all this time
they have had to get their act together at precision. I did get two
decent replacements for my lenses so I really have to thank Pentax for
doing that for me. I have been told by some people that things are
changing in that regard and that the service situation will be greatly
improved. I really hope so. This is the kind of stuff that makes
people ditch systems, especially working pros. Not having a 2nd body
for a long time really cramped my style and forced me to swap lenses
constantly which in the thick of things is the last thing you want to
be pissing around with and missing shots. My k-7 is passable as a 2nd
body in good light but that's about it. I wouldn't try to shoot an
indoors event with it unless I had some pretty fast glass attached.

Hoping for some sun this weekend. :)

Not the best photos but I can summarize. Glass is perfect, hood, barrel
and edges show scuffing, soft case is in great shape. Should have kept
the lens in it.

KEH says $468 w caps. I'll say $425 w caps, hood, soft case. If you
buy it and find something non functional (you won't) I'll take it back.

I'll consider an offer too.

i have the SMC D FA 35/2.8; i recall seeing a review which specifically
compared the SMC and HD versions of this lens, and found pretty minor
differences *except* that the HD version dulled the flare slightly so
that if you do night shots and like the star effect on streetlights,
etc., you might prefer the SMC

Stan, I think you are very engaged in your photography. I used to be
and hoping to be again. I have a 645 and lens, a couple of 6x7, 67's a
bunch of lens of various ages. I'm hoping to trim all of that. I am
sure I am not going back to film, or a darkroom. Next time I move I
will downsize and all this stuff needs to go. I also have a Besler 45
enlarger, trays all kinds of stuff. I'm a slave to my possessions. I
tend them, protect them, and move them but I don't love them any more.

Thanks for your encouraging words. I was really impressed with the Gx8
but my sentimentality for Pentax left me wanting more. I think the K3II
is it. I going home to unbox it and take a picture. I'll post it.

Mark, one thing I have quite enjoyed about the Pentax APS-C cameras and lenses
is the size. And also the solid build. And the 1.5x crop factor. And the image
quality those times when I do my part to get things right.

Early on, first with the APS-C and then the 4/3 cameras there was much fuss
made about the trade-offs with the smaller sensors, and frequently mentioned
was that the smaller sensors in smaller bodies would have smaller lenses that
would make transportage so much easier… I guess that is true to some extent,
but I am not sure (operating from memory here and not pages of specs) that the
DA*50-135 is all that much more compact than the FA*80-200. In any case, I have
found the APS-C in general and the K-3 in particular to be very usable cameras.

Back in the film days I played around a bit with weird photographic engines.
Never a Holga, but various TLRs, old folders, etc. For a while I had 2-3 Pentax
645 bodies and a fairly broad range of lenses. (Last seen when I traded the
remainder of my kit to a list member for a K-10 IIRC). I found the 645 a very
comfortable camera to use.

So going on 2 years ago when Pentax introduced the 645Z I took the plunge. The
combination of K-3 and 645Z has been good to me. Each is a different tool for
different purposes, and having both available helps me slow down and think
about what I am trying to do.

When the K-1 was introduced I thought about the size and weight compared to the
K-3. But then I thought about the size and weight compared to the 645Z and
realized that the K-1 is yet another in a long line of reasonably compact
cameras. On its own, as a single camera system I don’t think I would be
bothered at all. Carrying the K-1 and 645Z as a two camera system, the way I
have been with the K-3 and 645Z, may however push the boundaries of
portability. We’ll see. For now I am visualizing a 2+1 system wherein I carry
K-1 and 645Z, my wife moves to the K-3 from the K-r she has been using, and I
grab the K-3 from her when I want the benefit of the 1.5x crop factor. [Note
that my current most used combination on the K-3 is the DA*50-135 + HD 1.4x
teleconverter.]

I can’t predict which one or two or three cameras I might still be using a year
from now. But I am sure that if I ultimately fallback to the K-3 I will have
few regrets. It is a wonderful camera. I look forward to seeing your results
with it.

It is not the camera so much as the camera/lens combo in full frame.

The K-1 with the 70-200 is a great setup and I almost pulled the trigger on

Now I want to see the HD stuff vs the regular smc lens, use what I have and

the older FA for film may not provide what newer lens can on the new digital
sensors. I will see. I don't want to be disappointed and will go for the
newer lens which are probably smaller and better.

Boning up on my Lightroom skills also. I have LR 5. It will never the the "old days" ME
Super, 67 and lots of time in the darkroom but I am looking for the "new days" now.

You know I think I paid about what a K-1 costs for my *istD. I still have it.

I certainly don't regret buying the K-3ii. I also started to take pictures
every day on the first of January this year, without fail; I've already
braved the high wind and rain today to take some. I'd like to say that I had
some grand plan, but the truth of the matter is that I needed to force
myself out every day to exercise and deal with some back issues (successful
so far), and also because it's pointless owning such a camera and not using
it. The next purchase is another 4TB hard drive, as the smaller drive I use
day to day is almost at capacity, as a result of daily photography.

I do regret not pre-ordering a K-1. From what I've seen and read, it is
pretty much exactly what I would have wanted from a full frame camera. I'd
also feel confident about the purchase being right first time, whereas some
cameras that are new get recalled to get things fixed - isn't the Nikon D750
(certain batches?) on a second recall?

Long story short I cancelled my K-1 and ordered a K-3 II. I have a

Also a HD DA 100. Should be here tomorrow and soon I should post a pic

awesome camera especially compared to my K20d and Kx. I intend to go
for the best APS-c specific lens and avoid the larger full frames.
There are a lot of good HD DA lens.

Just in case it isn't awesome I have a Lumix Gx8. I just have to get
my tired, lazy ass out and start shooting. We will be entering the
festival season with Festival International and Jazz Fest approaching
and others.

I hope this is the catalyst for rehabilitation from numerous health
issues the last couple of years. I'm excited.

I have a lot to sell once I figure out what I want to keep. I think
it will pay for most of this upgrade. The group will get a heads up.
