Book Launch went well

2006-11-05 Thread Vic MacBournie
Thanks for all your kind words. I think the launch went pretty well.
Certainly I had a good time and everyone seemed to enjoy the book. We
have two more receptions planned in the next few weeks. One at a local
gallery and another at a Naturalists Club. The daily newspaper and a
weekly newspaper photographer were there so we are hoping for some good
publicity from the launch. The publisher is also working on some
television appearances as well, but we will have to see about that.
For anyone who is not aware of Ontario, Canada's Niagara Escarpment -
it stretches more than 700 kms from Niagara Falls to Tobermory in
Northern Ont. and is designated a United Nations Biosphere reserve.
I am not here to sell the book but if anyone is interested, possibly as
a Christmas gift..., I am able to get them at a reduced price (to
family members) and can offer signed versions of the book (by the three
photographers 2 Canon shooters one Pentax). Since I consider you family
the discount applies to all Pugsters LOL.
Thanks for your support

Re: OT: Wacom Graphire pen

2006-11-03 Thread Vic MacBournie
I consider the Wacom tablet an essential tool for working with photos.
Not only is it enjoyable to use, it gives you very precise control for
selections for painting in areas For cleaning up images it's
excellent I have two tablets - one on each Mac. I have an older Mac
with a larger tablet and the small one on my newer Mac. Both are
excellent. While the larger one is a little better I would not
recommend spending a significant amount more for it unless you really
feel you need it. The small one for about $100 is great. In addition to
the tablet, I got great software with mine - a couple of NIK photo
filters and Painter Lite. Both were worth the $100 alone. The NIK
filters included grad blue filters and painter Lite is an
excellent,creative tool...

FS: MZS LX pictures

2006-10-27 Thread Vic MacBournie
I put up a quick web page of pictures if anyone is interested in the
cameras or accessories

http://homepage.mac.com/sonpix/Vicspics/PhotoAlbum91.html

I am selling one of my two LX and my MZS. I am selling my best LX.
Originally I was going to sell it as a package with the winder and the
larger wooden grip but have decided I would break them up. So the
winder in excellent condition with the electronic shutter release that
attaches to it is $110 US. The LX with finder and Beattie Intensescreen
$325US and the wooden grip $30US.
The MZS $600 or best offer is in excellent condition with very few
rolls of film through it
  Pictures available on request

I take exception to this. You don't put dogs down for this type of thing...
you work with them and as Cesar Milan says you rehabilitate dogs and train

I know you were using this as a figure of speech and probably did not mean
it, but I would prefer not suggest dogs be put down for their owner's
mistakes

Decisions decisisons

2006-10-09 Thread Vic MacBournie
Okay I know this has been discussed in detail here many times over but
I am having a hard time trying to decide whether to sell some, if not
all, of my film cameras. My dillemma is that I love my film cameras
more than the digital but I use the digital almost exclusively. I will
sometimes carry my film cameras out on a shoot but not use them or at
least use them very rarely.
I have two very nice LX with winders and accessories and an MZS with
winder.
I also have the istd which certainly gets the most use.
My question is to those who have recently made this decision. It is
worth itin the end? Do you regret selling the film cameras. What are
the pros and cons.
In the end I will probably just sell the one LX but I could be
convinced to sell it all...
The other part of the dillemma is that I have a lot of K,M and A lenses
that really deserve an LX

That's exactly how I feel. I would rather invest in a few real nice

either. However, I like what Pentax is doing with their latest batch of

Re: k10d and manual-aperture lenses?

2006-10-09 Thread Vic MacBournie
I think we have to give JCO points for being so passionate and not
backing down from his position. I think he's argued the point so
vehemently that at this point he can't believe most people don't
outright agree with him. What he does not seem to realize is that we
all agree with him but are not willing to forego shooting digital
because of the minor inconvenience it brings. JCO I think very few
people are arguing with you about whether you are right or wrong, they
just don't think it's worth giving up on Pentax digital as a result. If
I were you and I loved those old lenses so much, I would stock up on
LXs and MZS's and get myself a good slide and negative scanner. Voila -
full support cameras and digital to boot.
By the way that's exactly what I have done. Problem is i still use the
istD 90 per cent of the time...

Re: Back on -can't resist

2006-10-08 Thread Vic MacBournie
Ha Ha that's partially what brought me back. I just shot about 200
shots of my daughter's precision skating team this morning with my K200
f2.5 and the istD I loved it. Using, I don't know a 30-year-old
lens, with a digital camera just brings a certain satisfaction that my
Canon friends can't experience and the results were just lovely. I
have a large assortment of K and M lenses that I use with the istD. The
fact that I can use them with the istD has kept me from going bankrupt
trying to replace them. Of particular note is the K200 f2.5, 85f2,
100f2.8, 35f2, 105,f2.5 Kiron macro
if the doubters only gave it a try they would never look back...

Re: Digicam for Dana

2006-06-27 Thread Vic MacBournie
I just picked up what i consider to be the perfect compromise when it
comes to still and digi-video camera. I was originally looking to buy
the Pentax MX to do a little video of my daughter's skating team. When
i kept losing out on ebay bids for this camera I stumbled across the
Casio exilim EX-p505. It's a 5 mpeg still camera with outstanding
MPEG-4 movie capability (VGA 640-480) on an SD card. Right from the
camera into the computer. Over an hour worth of video on a single 1 gig
card. So far I have been very impressed. I think it might be alot for
an child and I paid $278 US on ebay. But it is certainly worth the
money.
If you are interested check it out here...

Re: OT: Making Cards with Photos

2006-06-26 Thread Vic MacBournie
I am one of a group of three photographers who have been selling our
photographic cards for about 8 years now. We get our cards made up
custom from a local print house and then glue 4X6 on to the front. i
believe we paid less than 30 cents a card but we ordered 10,000 blank
cards. Envelopes are a little extra. Digital prints have boosted our
profits and ease of use immensely, but I have to say that there really
is not that much profit in it compared to the amount of work involved.
We have some very good clients who move a fair number of our cards
(including a local hallmark store.)
Anyway hope this helps...

Re: which camera to buy?

In my opinion, your best bet in the istd if you want to duplicate the

behind. I have both and find the build quality comparable...

Good morning. I finally made up my mind about buying a digital.

Pentax. I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to help me

about two cameras, particularly the *istD and *istD2. I tried the
*istDL the other day, it didn't "feel" right. I was amazed by the
price difference between the models. What is it that makes the *istD
more expensive? The viewfinder? The focusing system? Which camera
would be best for me in the long run? A large LCD would be a plus, but
not necessarily.

Thanks for your patience

I would like to have a camera just as good as my good old MZ-S, but
digital. I am interested in Portraits, Music, Documentary and Street

The MZ-S is a lovely camera, although too slow for modern pro

AFAIR the anticipated price in Damnark was in the neighborhood of

The big problem was that Pentax sdid not have a Plan B, which meant a

It should have lasted 6 months - tops!

I saw that one go on ebay... I think a lot of people underestimate the
quality of Tokina lenses. I would go out on a limb and say Tokina
lenses for the most part are as good and in many cases, better than
Pentax lenses when everything is taken into consideration and that
includes build quality. I have just completed collecting the three
lenses I wanted most all Tokina's : 80-200 f2.8, 28-70f2.8 and the
20-35 f3.5... (I think each and every one compares favourably to the
Pentax equivalent and at a fraction of the cost. I recently sold the
100-300 manual focus ATX lens which was an excellent overall lens..
Anyone looking for a great lens at a reasonable cost should consider
Tokina's offerings.

printing out photos separately and then assembling them in an album)

But then I searched for reviews.
Some review from 2002 said that the quality was so-so.
Somebody else wrote the quality had improved since the early years.
Someone else suggested that sharedink.com has a better quality.
Then I found a few other similar shops (e.g. www.imagestation.com).

Photo Vest - Made by Patagonia. I think it was designed as a fishing

package which could then be stored away in a camera bag for use as
needed. (I have three other vests so this one became expendable.)
It will hold a surprising number of lenses and gadgets. 10 pockets, a
huge mesh pocket on the back and meshed (breathable) pockets on the

Re: The Mystery of Matrix Metering

2005-12-27 Thread Vic MacBournie
Fred let me say first that matrix metering is incredibly good, however,
for us old guys (and anyone who thinks too much when they are taking
pictures) it can bring about some real problems. It is so good that
everything you learned about compensating for bright backgrounds, dark
backgrounds etc gets thrown out the window. If you compensate for snow,
you're liable to blow out the highlights... It takes a little getting
used to but it is right more than it is wrong.

OK, so what's the big deal with matrix metering? How is measuring 16

I ask this as an ol' manual focus film dinosaur, used to using center-
weighted metering all the time "back in the old days", but who now has
a DS

Re: Which mid-range zoom do you prefer?

2005-12-20 Thread Vic MacBournie
Hi Don: I have both #1 and #5. Both are exceptionally good lenses. The
autofocus powerzoom is a very solid lens for a lens of that vintage. I
have found it to be an exceptional lens and the one that is most often
on my camera MZS istD. I use the 35-105 manual focus often as my main
lens with the LX, but I often enjoy using it on the MZs and the istd.
With it's A setting, there is not much you give up on. Both are solid,
heavy lenses, but I would much prefer a heavy lens in most cases than a
flimsy light one.

Vic
On 20-Dec-05, at 6:33 PM, Don Sanderson wrote:

I have experience with 3 of those.

#4 was an outstanding lens but much too large and heavy for my tastes.

#2 I own with both the Tamron and Promaster labels. It is a small,
light

and sharp lens with very rapid AF response. I imagine the Pentax
labelled one is as good or perhaps better with SMC. AFAIK they are all
the same lens, the Tamron and Promaster certainly are. The Promaster
can be had brand new for $65.00 on eekBay.

#5 is a lens I am always amazed by. It is the sharpest, most contrasty
zoom I have ever seen. I can't bring myself to part with mine.
100% recommended if MF is OK. It also works perfectly with the F1.7x
AF converter, if you can find one. ;-)

Or is there a wider lens that you'd use for something like this?

Re: Stacking lenses for macro.

2005-12-19 Thread Vic MacBournie
Would the Vivitar macro convertor get you there? I happen to have one
for sale but I'm thinking that the combination of doubling and
extending the lens out would increase your magnification
substantially...

Tell your friend it's a great pic, Sylwek. :-)

I'm looking for something to achieve ca. 4x magnification.
I have a bellows with a total extension of 130mm. That gives roughly
2.5x with

a
50mm. A good 28mm lens would probably be optimal with a bellows,
giving 4x at

112mm extension.

Or maybe the 31mm limited? The built-in lens hood is a PITA...

However, a bellows solution is a second best. I hope to find an
optically good
combination of two stacked lenses to give 4x. It is so much more
convenient in

the field to use open-aperture metering...:-)

So far I've tried FA 100/2.8 macro with FA* 24/2, and A*200/4 macro
with FA
50/1.4. The latter is a lot better than the former, but still not
quite there.

Stopping down the 50mm to f/2 improves contrast, but introduce more
optical
errors with small apertures on the 200. This leads me to believe that
the best
50mm would be the one that is the sharpest at full opening, whatever
that may

be...

Pal - I'm with you entirely although I do own the istd and I have not
used my film cameras much since buying the ist D. However, if what you
have works for you, why change? The beauty of Pentax is that all you
really have to do is invest in a digital camera rather than a camera
and all new lenses, because all the old lenses work great. When you are
ready to buy a digital, you can just add it to your arsenal of film
cameras and use it when you feel the need... I love my film cameras
whether they get used enough or not. I'm in the process of selling a
mint LX and am certainly having doubts whether I want to sell it. you
can't replace the quality of these cameras with any of todays plastic
digitals. I ove my istD, don't get me wrong but it will never be an LX
or even an MZS.

Then there's the philosophical objection: a negative is an image, a
digital file is a description of an image.

Personally, I don'æ have a philosophical ojection towards digital or
any philosophical connections to film. I mean it quite literally; I
don't know why I should go digital. I'm happy with my current cameras
and lenses. I have ordered a scanner so that I can get my images
easily into digital form. In that way I get all the benefits from
digital image handling. I don't need instant gratification although it
certainly has it advantages. I actually like waiting for the film from
the lab and seeing it on a light table for the first time. In
addition, film give me a hard copy I can keep in addition to a copy of
the image in digital form. I'm also familiar with all my equipment and
I don't need to buy another camera (or lens). I don't use so much film
that cost for film and processing becomes a problem. In short, I'm
quite happy...

Thanks Daichi

2005-12-10 Thread Vic MacBournie
Thanks to Daichi Saeki, I believe a long time lurker on this list, I am
now the proud owner of the venerable Pentax F300 4.5. And a beautiful
specimen it is. Let me just say that meeting Daichi, even for the brief
period we spent together trading cash for a lens over a coffee, was
truly a joy. A very nice young fellow, who we are probably going to
lose to the world of Canon. Daichi will be putting up a few more items
on the list in the next week or so. I would not hesitate to buy
anything off of this fine young gentleman

Also, since I have been enabled I must begin to disable a little to pay
for my enablement. I too will officially post next Friday a number of
goodies for sale. If you want to get early dibbs: I am probably looking
to sell one of my two LXs with motor drive (both excellent with the
wooden-like grips and grid screens, FA70-200 f4-5.6, (FA 28-100 Power
zoom like new still in box) 28mm 3.5, 30 mm 2.8 (mint) yes the
extremely rare one), probably my Tokina ATX 100-300 f4 manual focus and
a few more goodies

PS I've been lurking for the past few months but decided now that the
winter is here to get back in...

thanks

Re: Pentax Future? What's next for Pentax...

2005-10-04 Thread Vic MacBournie
One of the benefits is its small size which, if you want to keep it
small, you leave off the grip. But if you want to have a heftier
camera, you put on the grip. Best of both worlds. Most other camera
manufacturers don't give you that choice - it's either big or bigger...
so it's not really a complaint that it is too small just a reason to
buy and use the grip if you know what I mean..

What gets me is (if you've been watching the *ist D grip thread) that

general Pentax DSLRs are great because they're small discussions.

Please don't shit it off... that could be messy and could really take a

LOL.

It is indeed VERY useful in portrait mode but you WILL have to shit it
off when using it in landscape mode for a while (say, you know you
won't need it, just shut it off) otherwise you will AF exactly when
you shouldn't have ;)

Re: ist D Battery Grip

2005-10-04 Thread Vic MacBournie
I think the IstD grip is even more useful as far as handling the
camera, The istD is a little small for my liking but add the battery
grip and it is a whole different story. Feels perfect in my hand. I
would not live without it. The MZS grip feels great in my hands as well
and I think it has additional functions...

I agree Shel. Pentax lenses are a good investment especually if you are
shooting film and digital. I have the 20 2.8A lens and I love it.

Plus, the difference in price between a used 20mm A and a new 20mm FA

about $100.00 - $200.00, money which I could put to better use than
giving

to B&H for an FA version.

I'm not giving up film for digital, so wherever possible, a lens that

serve me well on film and the digi camera is very desireable.

Don' take it as criticism but why?

I use both mf and af with the 20-35, 14, and 35 a lot. AF is often
quite
useful w these focal lengths as well as fast & accurate. Very easy to
zone
focus too. I am not sure I understand the reason behind your
preference.

For this particular focal length, as well as some others, I much
prefer

manual focus.

Have you people got an idea how to make a Pentax Logo I can put on the

I don't want to promote Pentax, rather than Canon. Pentax is the
camera

brand I use the most.

You could add "SUCKS!" under the Canon logo.

There are a lot of places where you can order patches. The Pentax would
seemingly be easy to copy. The problem is you have to order in bulk to
get

the best price.

Is there enough interest that we could sell 100 patches with the Pentax
logo? They could be sewn onto jackets, camera bags, underwear and
wherever
else you want. This place could make 100 3" fully embroidered patches
for
$1.86 each: We could get them to your door (in the U.S.) for around
$2.25

each.

I didn't look anywhere else. It's just the first website I found but
it's

useful as an example of what can be done.

Frank I have the K200 2.5 and am in the process of getting a Tokina

the fast autofocus. If you can afford to get the K200 2.5 go for it
because there ain't many of those babies around. (especially if it's a
good price).

Re: Pentax Logo DIY

i am sure if you took a Pentax logo into a shop that does computerized
embroidered logos (for sports teams etc) they could do one for you no
problem. In fact, i'm going to check into that with a company I use for
my daughter's skating team logos. They did patches for the team for
about $3 last year

Re: OT: Illustrator CS vs Painter IX

2005-09-26 Thread Vic MacBournie
Thanks Markus: They're a little different than traditional photography.
I think Painter can be a lot of fun. I use the cloning tool (soft
cloner) to extract the animal from it's background and then work on it
from there with some painterly techniques. When it comes to photography
my number one program is photoshop, but Painter is certainly number
two. I have illustrator but rarely if ever use it

I love Painter and have used it for a few years. It's a spectacular
program in the hands of a true fine artist but it is also incredibly
good for us photographers who are looking to take their photographs

a more creative level... (I too got an updated copy when I bought a

I have a number of animal portraits which I have done by using a
