The FA 24/2 is very nice. I took it, the FA 35/2 and the FA 77/1.8 to

the 24 on at least half the shots. Just have to keep remembering to

RE: Exclusive picture of new Pentax D-SLR

2002-10-27 Thread arkibladt
Hi all
This is a very long thread based on the fact, that one Taiwaneese magasine
didn't have a picture of the future/new Pentax DSLR, that is going to
replace the abandoned (MZ-S-like) one, and used a two year old picture.

We seem to know, it's going to have a 16x24mm 5 megapix CCD (?), a KAF-mount
and will cost appr. 1500 USD/Euro's (Body only). As I recall the D MZ-S was
supposed to cost about 6000-8000 USD/Euros, which means the new one must be
very much different - since it costs about 1/4.
I'll probably buy one instead of the MZ-S I never got.

Faktor 1.5 focal means a 29mm will be like a 43mm, the normal lens.
Basicly this doesn't mean very much in every day photography, but probably
that Pentax will make some new widelangles, rectiliniar and fish-eye's, in
the near future - and some new standard zooms, like a 2.8/16-60mm (24-90mm).
Or maybe a SMC FA 2.8/19mm-47mm (28-70mm). It might be great fun to use
theese on a 35mm body? I'll certainly like the latter.

Hi Steve,

on 26 Oct 02 you wrote in pentax.list:

I do have a question, however. How difficult is it to use the MZ-S
shape but recast it in polycarbonate? I realize that it would require
new mfg lines that cast plastic instead of bend metal, screw fittings
would be needed, etc., etc., but the final product would be much cheaper
and I think a few hundred bucks cheaper would make a big difference..

Interesting question. I can't answer it but I was thinking in the same
direction. For me the MZ-S was never a real MZ as it has a unique
design. Pal has said, that the Pentax reps sometimes are quite
misunderstandig. So what if the MZ-S was the developing basis for new
products and now will be the basis for the new chassis? I could imagine
a new chassis line as follows:

- a cheaper MZ-S made of polycarbonat replacing MZ-5/MZ-6
- the present MZ-S as semi-pro camera
- the previous MZ-D with minor changes and the APS-sized chip
- a MZ-flagship as big as the MZ-D with an integrated, fast winder and
more pro-features

For me this sounds sensible (altough it is pure speculation), especially
as this would amortize Pentax's investments in rd. On the other hand
there is missing a replacement for the cheap consumer bodies (MZ-60
etc.). So maybe these will still be produced in their present shape. And
another argument against a new MZ-S-line: The LX was a similar product
but it remained unique - there were no further developments into other
bodies.

Hi group,

photography is an anytime changing, exciting thing that has found
numerous places and discussion forums in the web. These are changing
as photography in general is changing. This cannot be without
consequences for forums like these.

What can be observed in the last year was a fast growing website and
forum community with unmatched competence in the digital photography
area. Especially dpreview became a place, where informations and
discussions became available much faster and reliable than in the
classic brand related forums. Recently, e.g. the article and pictures
on a new MZ-S Digital on photosharp.com.tw appeared there 2 days
earlier than on the usually fast PDML.

Since high end SLR photography in future will be digital photography,
it is just consequent to shift a forum like this one over to a place
like dpreview if time is ready for this. In my mind, it's ready now.

So I invite all the 200+ friendly, humble, knowledgable and relaxed
members I have seen here plus the numerous passive readers to switch
over to

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/

in order to strengthen the Pentax crowd there. In case you have no
interest in digital, I have two things on offer. First the two big
Pentax yahoo groups http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Spotmatic/ and the
pdml offspring http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PentaxUsers/. Second,
this group will not be deleted, but it will become a passive archive.
So members will have access to the postings and image archive aytime
at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pentaxxstarforum/. However, this
archive will be a so called hidden group without new messages. The
change will happen at the end of October.

See you,

Ralf

Well, I guess the csots of developing the MZ-S body has allready been paid
for by the MS-S sales. I's might probably be cheaper to reuse the MZ-S

700-800 USD, leaving a little economic space for implementing the

There is another important point from the Taiwanese report: Pentax aims at
pricing the new D-SLR's to about half of the existing D-SLRs like D100 and
D60 (list price = 330,000yen). It's planned price competitor is Sigma SD-9.
The list price is the same at 200,000yen. Pentax Taiwan expected a street
price of about USD1,200.

Hi Dave

Even though I use Super A, I'm not familiar with the AF280T. But an easy way
to cheat the automatics could be NOT to use TTL-mode but Automatic mode
and then cheat the ASA setting (only on the flash)? It can be done with my
Metz flashes.

By the way - I'd use fill flash, not to add contrast on a dull day, but
quite the opposite - to reduce contrast (soften shadows) on a sunny day.

In a related quiry as Brads.I have the Super Program and 280T
flash.I was experimenting with fill on my last BW roll with poor
results. If i set the flash to TTL or any other mode other than
manual, the camera automaticly sets up at 125 shutter(sync speed for
camera)What would be the best way to add a bit of fill flash on a
dull day.Set flash to manual, meter ambient light and close down
1, 1 1/2 stops to compansate for flash.I see no way to adjust flash
output in manual mode, other that using the Cotty plastic bouncy

SV: Simple K1000 Lens Question

Well, the 135mm pulls in more - graeter magnification. But the 100mm is
faster=brighter screen/vievfinder=easier focusing/better in low light -
about half a stop. Which one you prefere really depends on what you are
shooting. I find the 100mm better for indoor shooting and protraits - the
135mm often gets you too close. Outdoor I'd prefere the 135mm.

John,
You're right the 135mm has more reach, but it is also a bit slower.
The
M-100mm f2.8 is a bit smaller and faster, so it's easier to focus and hold
steady. There is a bigger K-100mm f2.8 but they are more rare.
The M-135/3.5 is an old favorite and dirt cheap for the quality it
provides. You won't go wrong with it!

That's not quite my experience - Z1 does the same with a flash - but it
DEPENDS ON THE FLASH - it's not the same with every flash. Whenusing a flash
in dark conditions I find it annoying that the camrea choose rather slow
speeds. I use the Z1 in Manual Mode, when I'm using a flash (the
TTL-automatics still works in Manual, which is great BTW) for the same
reason. And, I guess that's the reason they put in a 250-setting on the
Z1-P - to help freeze movement, when there's ambient light in the scene.

Brad, Paul,

There's an old rule of thumb saying that the longest hand-holdable shutter
speed for a lens is 1 divided by focal length. Ie, for a 28mm, 1/30s, for a
135mm, 1/125 (by approximation).

The MZ-S receive info from FA-lenses telling the focal length. Then the
camera selects a shutter speed that allows as much ambient light as possible
while being possible to hand-hold without camera shake. Definately a good
thing to do when working with flash.

The Z-series and MZ-series cameras will do the same thing, but not while
working with flash. My Z-1 tends to select shutter speeds one step slower
than suggested by the rule, which kinda makes me a bit nervous about camera
shake. (doesn't help to be nervous either, I suppose...)

 Ok,

Time to spill my guts to you fine folks. I need some help. It's a silly
matter that I've had since starting shooting. Ok, here's the equipment
first, cameras MZ-5n, MZ-S, flash units, AF330FTZ and AF360FGZ, lens
example, my 28-105mm zoom. Ok, mix and match the flashes to the cameras
however you like. Generally now it's the MZ-S with the AF360FGZ. Normal
indoor conditions, flash in hotshoe properly, all charged up, flash on
the
P-TTL or TTL, everything is normal. Camera is set on program. This all
cool so far? Ok, at 28mm, I get a wide open aperture in this case f/4
and
 a
shutter speed of 1/30sec. Does that make sense? Is that correct? I
would
have thought the aperture would be smaller, and the shutter speed higher.
Ok, zoom out to the 105mm, aperture still wide open, now at f/5.6,
1/90sec
shutter. What's going on? I always bypass this and sometimes set the
aperture, most times, I don't. I do however, in the MZ-5n, set the
shutter
to 1/125 to get the 1/100 sync. With the MZ-S, I set it to 1/180.

I'm quite embarrassed asking this question, but I now feel I need to
know.
Is what is happening correct? Am I doing the right thing by setting the
shutter higher? Btw, the pictures turn out just fine. I just don't
understand why the shutter speed is SO low and the aperture is wide open.

Please, any assistance would be very appreciated, and while feeling like
a
fool for a while, at least I'll know what the heck is going on.

No problem. Picture a lens projecting light on to a 24x36 rectangle.
Now picture a small postage stamp in the center of the 24x36 rectangle.
Light passing through the center of the lens still covers the postage
stamp, but light from the outer edges of the lens are now far outside
the imaging area represented by the small postage stamp. Viola! The
lens with the sharp center and the mushy corners suddenly appears to
have changed its ways, becoming sharp all the way around (at least,
until it is put back on a camera that records a 24x36 image.

often does one shoot in extremely low light with a 200? And the SMC
200/4 is an excellent lens. When shooting with the 28, a shutter speed

me one cent!

But - if you are good (not just at photographing, but you must know what the
market and demand is - which photographs sells, which motivs and which
styles) and willing to take some risks - you can sell photographs. Some
people do, for a living.

I don't believe in selling photographs through your own web site. If you
want to, you must make sure your site is easy to find from any major
search-engine (yahoo, altavista, google etc.) Try contacting a marketing
consultant.

Have any of you with your own web pages had any success in selling images
for stock use through the web? I've reading Ron Engh's Sellphoto.com and
setting up my own web page seem temping as I have quite a few unique and
saleable images..
For those who have experiences with this, have you actively marketed your
images towards potential clients? How much work is it to make your own (well
designed) web page for someone who has never done this sort of thing before?

Why do you need spot beam - shooting a lot in the dark?
Metz and mabybe others have a SCA-adapter (Pentax dedicated) with a

I'm looking for flash with these characteristics to use with my ZX-L:

1. TTL
2. Autofocus assist (the red spot beam from another thread)
3. Under $50 US

I thought I had found such a flash with the Vivitar 728. However, when it
arrived from BH, the manual noted that the autofocus assist works only with
Canon and Nikon cameras. I tested the flash and found the auto focus assist
does not completely not work with my Pentax, but the results were close
enough to make the manual correct. (How's that for a terrible sentence.)

The reason I'm looking for a cheap flash is that I've put a real flash, the
Pentax AF 500 FTZ, on my Christmas wish list. Right now, I'm debating with
myself on returning the Vivitar. I could probably justify its cost as a
relatively light weight fill-flash for outdoor events like Mardi Gras.
However, if I could find a flash that met ALL my criteria, I would return
the Vivitar and buy the other one.

I've looked around on the web, but haven't found anything. On eBay, someone
is selling a lot of Sakar flashes that claim to have TTL and auto focus
assist capbilities. I have never heard of Sakar before, so I'm suspicious
even at those prices.

Does anyone know any flash models that would meet my criteria?

Thanks!

In aperure priority mode set whatever exposure you want that gives shutterspeed
slower than 1/180s. Lock that exposure - it takes a twist of the thumb. Dial in exp.
compensation. Thats it. Its far easier and faster than on the Z-1p I used to own.

Yes, damn right, and I agree with my president, but sorry, I don't get how this
relates to
 the question. Again...

What has Bin Laden said that he wants? Please try not to leave anything out so as to
make
him seem more acceptable. You don't think we've heard it from his own lips, but we
have.
Again... Surely your version will be without bias.

Separate question. Now, exactly what do you think the United States should do about
the
three acts of terror resulting in the loss of more than 5000 lives now. Now
remember, I
didn't ask what the US shouldn't do.

 Ignore them?
Apologize because most of the people in the towers were able to escape so that we
could not learn our full lesson?
Apologize for all past indiscressions and hold a day of national suicide to ride
the
 world of our nastiness?
Send a diplomat over to say Naughty, naughty! Grown up nations don't act like
this?

Exactly what would be your response if the situation was reversed? What if some
disaster
from the same folks who brought this last disaster is visited upon your country?
What if
it happens simply because your country is a member state of NATO or simply because
your
nation has described this disaster as brought by evil men whereas they believe it is
a
 holy thing?

Give me a break! There will be retribution and the ability of terrorists to wage
their
war on this scale will be eliminated.

Generally, turn about is the essence of fair play. (If you say it's ok to do what
you do,
well then, we agree.) What if the US picks symbols the terrorists hold dear and
clear them
to the ground? We won't do that, but what if we do? You'll get mad? And then what?
You'll
destroy the US? What do you think the US (or any other country) would do? Do you
think any
country will allow itself to be laid waste and wiped from existence without using
the best
 weapons in it's arsenal?

Arrogant? Damn right. I'm sure you can find some better words too. Then I'll agree
with
you that we're (whatever description you think will be insulting). Then what? 225
years
ago we gave up caring what the nations of Europe thought of us.

Keep in mind, there is no place in the Middle East that we've been that we weren't
invited, or that we didn't ask first except Iraq. We went at the request of Kuwait
and
 Saudi Arabia.

I know I am. I appreciate and enjoy Pentax M42 screwmount equipment and

But how many of us are willing to be FORWARD LOOKING as well?

There is a good chance that by the end of 2002, Pentax will be headed
towards becoming a major player in the digital camera marketplace. There's a
good chance that its digital products will multiply rapidly. This will start
 happening SOON, I'm guessing.

Happening probably much more gradually, there is a good chance that
development of new film products will diminish to a trickle.

Pentax is CHANGING. The next few years may well see a major reorientation of
the company's products. There will be what amounts to a NEW PENTAX.

How willing are each of you to come along for the ride? I'm not asking if
you'll switch over to digital--I have yet to see it written that if you
use digital, you can't also use K2s, LXs, and MZ-Ss. But WHERE are you in
your understanding of the new ways of making pictures, and HOW DO YOU FEEL
about becoming forward-looking as well as backward-looking, and...will you
still BE LOYAL to Pentax when most new product introductions are digital???

Would some one please tell me what the chrome button is for
on my Super Program (recent eBay purchase) that is just below
the PC connection. I am used to the ME Super and this camera
seems very similar in the way the controls are. Pentax USA
is supposed to send me a users manual but that may take a
week or two so I'm just trying to figure this thing out. I haven't
yet finished a roll of film so I'm not even sure if it's working
 properly yet.
 Thanks,
 Robert

Sv: Super Program help

2001-08-23 Thread arkibladt

Hi Robert
I don't have my Super A with me in Ireland, but as far as I recall it must be the
button that turns on the light for the viewfinder info. Or is it the small LCD? It's
handy in low light situations. It turns off automaticly after a while.
Best Regards

Selling Photographs!

2001-08-23 Thread arkibladt

Hi all
Do any of you great photographers know if there is a web site, where you/we can submit
your/our photographs for sale or hire?
I know of professional agencies, that market photographs taken by more or less
employed photographers (freelance). Some photographer do this for a liveng. Some for
fun/on the side.
But wouldn't it be nice if you/we/amateurs could submit some great shots to a website
for a reasonable fee - say 1-5$ pr. photograph.
The website/the website administrator could market the site in different ways.
Magazines, marketing agencies etc. could use the photos for a fee.
The biggest problem is how to make that website, how to organize the thumbnails, how
to establish a quality control and how to administer the commercial aspect of the
whole thing.

Answers and ideas are very welcome.

The AF 500FTZ is fully compatible with the MZ-S.

So my dilemma is: does it make any sense to put money into the MZ-S +
AF360FGZ? What if the new flash isn't fully compatibile with older MZ

I expect the 360 FGZ to be fully compatible with older MZ bodies.

However, to access the advanced flash capabilities of the MZ-S you need the new
flash.
The drawback with the MZ-S is that it has no flash compensation from the body.
However, its quicker to do manual flash compensation on the MZ-S than automatic
compensation on the Z-1p.

But seriously: Nice photos. I like the way the model

I have to get into portraits. Just need to get that

fit/work with any of my current cameras. People have
said it's a good portrait lens. Any day now, I can't

 +1,+2,+3, right!

The exposure dial only shows one stop over and one stop under, and the
default setting is for three exposures bracketed one stop under exposed -
neutral - one stop over exposed.

However, you can opt via Pentax function 3 to select a 5 exposure
bracketing sequence - two stops under exposed through two stops
over. Combined with exposure compensation you have a lot of flexibility.

print photographers - the prints will be almost identical!

MZ-S Bracketing and more

2001-08-16 Thread arkibladt

Hi Paal
Thanks for the storey - just had it printed today.
Is this really a store from the designers? Or some kind of cult advertising (no
offence)?

It's interesting to read about the choises the designes made. It would be even more
intersting to know what went before choosing the actual functions - not just where/how
they designed the controles! But why they ruled out certain things E.I. the lversatile
bracketing options of the PZ1p. I tend to use more than one stop bracketing.
Look at the sundown at Cliffs of Moher at my home page
http://jensbladt.freeservers.com
I made this by using 1,3 stops between exposures (Z1) - even those pictures were very
much the same (exposure wise) even though you can clearly see the difference in
shutterspeed.
Anyway, I'm going to buy the MS-S befor this year has gone. I wish I could resist -
until The MZ-Sn will eventually arrive.
