Re: GESO - The Kids

2012-07-13 Thread DagT
I´m impressed that you got that far :-)

The number IS a problem, but especially for that gallery there is a sense of
making some kind of a chronicle (like the PAW) but I´m aware that I can´t
expect anyone to see everything.

Lots of thanks for looking, Rick, and also Steve, Bob, Daniel and Dave!

My oldest son, soon 13, looked through the pictures and liked them. This is
their story, not mine. :-)

 http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/diffraction-photography.htm/

They do have some interesting stuff in there, that I'll definitely
need to go and re-read, such as how the anti-aliasing filter affects
all of this. Although I'm beginning to suspect that as resolution
increases, diffraction and lens issues will soon render anti-aliasing
as unneeded. If we're sampling at twice the diffraction limit, or
the lenses resolution, do we really need an AA filter?

If I had more skill with a spreadsheet, it would be interesting to
graph out diffraction limit vs resolution on different sensor sizes.
It would also be interesting to see where various lenses fall in
sharpness. I.e. on my K-5 with my FA77, when does the lens, the
 sensor or diffraction limit resolution?

The more I learn about photography, and what is required to maximize
the technical quality of my photos, the more tempted I am to just
quit worrying about how sharp they are, and just have fun taking
 snapshots.

Re: How to photograph the transit of Venus?

2012-05-30 Thread DagT
I tried a very different method last time:
http://www.thrane.name/Pictures/Anythings/files/page9-1037-full.html
http://www.thrane.name/Pictures/Anythings/files/page9-1036-full.html

You can use one eye of a binocular (or a monocular) and by adjusting a bit you
are able to project an image of the sun on the floor, wall, etc. I simply put a
sheet of paper on the floor.

If you mount the binocular on a tripod you will be able to follow the passage
with you own eyes. I didn´t have a tripod mount on mine so I held it in my hand
(you see the shadow of my thumb in one of the pictures). Not as sharp as it
would be the ordinary way, but more fun :-)

I think I disagree, I liked the complexity (said the minimalist :-). Even if I

Re: Liquid lenses

2012-05-01 Thread DagT
Part of the fun working with inventors is that you see these things from time
to time. :-)

The idea is old, but the problem with these lenses is to get a good optical
surface, and some Norwegian scientists found that they could get that using
thin microscope glass over a gel. The first time I saw it the prototype
consisted of one gel, two microscope glass plates and two coins with a hole i
the middle So you put pressure on the edges and the glass bends around the gel
making i lens. They had mounted it on a camera and showed quite good images.
Today they use piezoelectric elements to bend the plate.

They (helped by me) filed a patent application,
http://worldwide.espacenet.com/publicationDetails/originalDocument?CC=WONR=2008035984A2KC=A2FT=DND=3date=20080327DB=EPODOClocale=en_EP
I think you will find a mention of the older ideas, including the pump in the
aplication.
and the firm trying to sell it, especially for mobile phone cameras is here
http://www.polight.no/

There will be some time before they make them large enough for glasses but for
small cameras they are OK. What you actually get is a stationary zoom lens, as
it focusses by changing the focal length.

There was an item in the newspaper today - Dow Corning has been working with
an NGO on ways to reduce the many problems associated with poor vision and
lack of access to prescription corrective glasses. So they have been testing
a prototype of a self-adjustable lens. A person puts on the glasses,
manipulates what sounds like a form of pump to adjust the amount of an
optical silicone fluid in the lens to adjust the power of the lens. The
adjuster can then be detached and the user has what look like a normal pair
 of glasses.

 My mind is boggled!

I wonder if optical silicone fluid would be lighter than, for example, HD
glass in modern camera lenses? And how about a hydraulic adjustment to zoom
rather than via mechanical motors and gears?

Photographyblog is saying they saw the new Pentax lens roadmap at the
K-01 unveiling in the UK. Here's what's in store (subject to change,
the whims of Pentax gods, market situation, etc.):

 2012:

  - DA Standard lens (50mm)
  - DA High magnification zoom lens (18-200mm)
  - DA Telephoto lens (550mm)

 2013:

  - DA Ltd zoom (24-38mm)
  - DA Telephoto zoom (125-375mm)
  - DA Wideangle zoom (12-28mm)
  - DA Zoom (18-120mm)
  - DA AF RC 1.4x teleconverter

Focal lengths are approximate and garnered from reading the tea leaves
in the images of the roadmap shown by Photographyblog. I'm sure Pentax
is being vague on purpose, most likely because many of them are
probably not even on the drawing board. The lenses, I mean, not the
 Pentax employees.

Re: PAW104 - Beware: Cat content

2012-01-09 Thread DagT
Thanks!

I think the highlights are there, but the combination of being slightly out of
focus and difficult mixed yellow/green light that made me convert it to B/W has
lost some detail. Also, I had to reduce contrast in the skin tones (as well as
local adjustments) because the eyes were in shadow.

It´s not easy not to respond when the boy suddenly is willing to take the
picture for his birthday card because the cat is calm...

Thanks to Tim, Ann, Jeffrey, Mark, Larry, Bruce, Knarf, Brian, Paul, David,
Christine and Steve!

Great shot, excellent composition. I love the way you left just enough of the

Could you dial up the recovery slider just a touch and get back a few of the

don´t work. That´s the most valuable information.

Almost lurk mode continues a little more, as we are moving into our new house.,
but I´ll try to get a new picture ready tomorrow.

Another excellent study in texture and geometry. This doesn't quite
work (for me) as well as some of your other recent PAWs. I think the
woman is a bit too close to the edge of the frame.

Thanks Don, and Dave, Brian, Steve and Ann :-)

I did take several pictures without the legs and found the same. The picture
lacks something without them.

Brian, at first glance I looked at the shadows when moved back to examine
the picture as a whole I agreed with your comment. (I admit I am a ruthless
cropper). But I went back looked again and I covered the legs with an
envelope and the picture became very sterile. So now I agree with your
conclusion. Dag was right all along. As he usually is IMHO

 Sure does.

I doubt I could ever 'see' a composition like this; I'd want to crop out
the top figure. But somehow it balances the composition.
