PESO - Saturday Afternoon Treat
This weekend was very warm for early March, with temps in the high teens Celsius (maybe into the 50s F?). The streets were teeming and this ice cream shop on Roncesvalles Avenue in Toronto was doing a brisk business, including this lady: http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.ca/2016/03/saturday-afternoon-treat.html Hope you enjoy. PESO - Fun on Ice
A rare (for me) flash shot, but I found that the 1600ISO that my K10D gives me is about 2 stops less than I needed for any action shots at the Ice Race. PESO - Toronto Crew, After Shop 'til you Drop Alleycat
So here's the Toronto Crew - certainly not all of, but most of the "hardcore messengers" in Toronto, after their annual Shop 'til you Drop Charity Alleycat race. An alleycat is an unsanctioned, illegal street race with no rules. Except that you have to prove you stopped at certain checkpoints along the route that you choose. For this race the checkpoints were supermarkets and the racers proved their checkpoint by purchasing a specified food product and showing it and the receipt at the finish. They raised over $700 of food for local foodbanks. Then we went to the nearest firehall (they accept food bank donations) and we dropped the food. Then a group shot: http://mondociclismo.blogspot.ca/2016/01/toronto-crew-after-shop-til-you-drop.html It was not bright, my K10D only goes up to ISO1600, so this isn't the sharpest shot, but I think the satisfaction shows through. Hope you enjoy. Re: PESO - The Protestor
Hi Ann, I am quite certain that's a coyote. They look a lot like German Shephards - at least facially. Here's a Coyote that lives in the lakeside park near my place: http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2015/02/coyote-beautiful.html Coyotes are often grey or brown. According to: http://www.respectforanimals.co.uk/facts-and-reports/statistics/103/ 47,340 is the total number of coyote pelts (presumably combined trap and ranched) that Canada "produced" in 2,009, the last year reliable figures were available. As for the composition, thanks for your thoughts. I have many more that are wider, I felt that the tight shot on this one added impact. I'll post another one tonight. Perhaps you'll like that one more. :-) Thanks for taking the time to comment! cheers, frank On Tue, Nov 24, 2015 at 6:30 PM, ann sanfedele wrote: > It took me a while to figure out that the photo is of the head of a dog next > to a pup that looks like a german shepard, or a mix > and her pup...possibly supposed to be a wolf? certainly not a fox, mink, > sable, etc. animals that would not be harvested for fur garments.. > so what doesn't work so well (regardless of which side of the arguement you > are on ) is that the poster maker appears not to have known > what animals are used in making fur garments... and sadly that the protester > is probably clueless in that regard as well... > > I don't think there are 47,000 doggies trapped annually > > From a compositional point of view only, I'd like it to be less tightly > cropped.. > > ann > > > On 11/24/2015 2:58 PM, Rick Womer wrote: >> >> Very good photojournalism, Frank. >> >> Rick >> http://photo.net/photos/RickW >> >> >> On Tue, Nov 24, 2015 at 2:47 PM, knarf wrote: >>> >>> Thank you for actually commenting on the photo! As we walked downtown yesterday we saw a bunch of police cars in front of Holt's, a very upscale department store. An animal rights group was protesting fur in general, but also the fact that Holt's sells it: I'll likely have a gallery later in the week, but until then, this kind of sums it up: http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.ca/2015/11/the-protestor.html Fur trim on parkas and coats is unfortunately seeing a resurgence around these parts. PESO - Bunny on the Beach
I was on a very narrow, muddy beach at a cove on the Lake when I heard an unusual noise behind me. Turned around and there's this little guy: http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2015/10/bunny-on-beach.html He stood stock still for several seconds. I crouched to get a better angle and he flinched so I stopped. Fired off a few shots and then he skittered off into some brush. Watched me warily for several seconds and went deeper into the brush, and that was it. One doesn't often see rabbits in broad daylight in the open like that. I hesitated showing this because I wish it were sharper (I think autofocus locked on to some grass or something) but I guess this will do. Very enjoyable memory for me! Hope you enjoy. Certainly, two of our best governments over the past 50 years have been minority governments. In Canada, with three major parties, a minority government's effectiveness often depends on who holds the "balance of power". Often the third place party can have a very strong voice in policy formation. cheers, frank On Wed, Oct 21, 2015 at 1:02 AM, David Mann wrote: > On Oct 21, 2015, at 7:27 AM, knarf wrote: > >> Liberals pretty much swept the Atlantic provinces. Re: OT - Elections and Politics and Guns and Religion
Well, luckily, now that we've elected a somewhat progressive (by American standards, downright socialist) Liberal government, we'll likely regain some of what was taken away by the corporate-capitalist Conservative toadies. True, our elected government is not nearly as far to the left as I'd prefer, I'm still buoyed by the fact that they have actually pledged to raise taxes on the rich, directly fund infrastructure improvements to stimulate the economy and run a deficit to fund those hefty government expenditures. Okay, even though Swans on the Wing is sharper, I think I prefer this one for the colour of the sky, the composition/position of the swans and the fact that their flapping wings are synchronized (which is the way swans usually fly - I don't know what's up with the earlier photo). The trailing swan, while not quite as sharp as the earlier photo, is acceptable; I wish the lead swan were sharper. PESO - Etobicoke Creek
I mentioned in an earlier post that I spent Sunday at Etobicoke Creek. It's a couple of kilometres from my house, marking the border between Etobicoke (now part of Toronto) and Mississauga (a huge suburb west of Toronto). You can see remnants of early 20th Century human intrusion (including at least one washed out bridge) but it's pretty much untouched now. And by late summer, quite lush: http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2015/09/etobicoke-creek.html Good photos can be had here. Hope you enjoy. Re: PESO - Cordage
I bet it was 35 or 40 years ago for me, too. I gave it up after Hermie went on and on about whether a whale is a fish or a mammal (duh!) and IIRC he concluded that it's a fish. My young mind was about to explode (since I KNEW the answer, and "fish" wasn't it!) so I put the book down and never picked it up again. I'd already seen the movie anyway and they didn't put all that mammal/fish stuff in. Not Gregory Peck's best vehicle but it was better than the book. PESO - Come Blow your Horn
I'm not sure how much I like this one. It's so close. This guy (and the drummer) ~were~ quite good. First attracted my ear with strains of Dizzy Gillespie's ~A Night in Tunisia~, and he continued to play lots of Miles and mid-fifties late bebop stuff. BUT, the light was horribly harsh, and he kept moving from the light into the shadows. That moving also made it hard to get him and the drummer in the same frame without (to say the least) very distracting backgrounds. Unfortunately this photo has one of those horrid backgrounds, and he's in front of the drummer, but this was by far the best pose he "gave me" all 15 or 20 minutes I listened: http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.ca/2015/08/come-blow-your-horn.html I waited to catch it again, constantly moving about to keep things nicely framed, but that pose never happened again.
