Re: Vivitar lenses

2002-09-04 Thread steven gilson

I had a S1 70-210/3.5. I sold because I liked my SMCA 70-210/4 better. The Vivitar
is quite sharp, maybe sharper wide open. But it's color rendition didn't seem to
match my other lenses, which are mostly Pentax. But if you do most or all of your
shooting with Vivitar's this won't be a problem for you.

??? on SMC M 120/2.8 and street candids

2002-07-31 Thread steven gilson

Hi all,

I am looking for a compact medium tele whose main use would be available light street
photography and candid portraits. From looking at tech info and user comments the
best (perfect?) canidate I can find in the Pentax line up is the M120/2.8. The only
problem is I can't seem to find one for sale. I also fear that when I do it will be
priced out of my range due to rarity.

I'm wondering first off if some of you who have used this lens would agree that it is
right for the job. If so, what would be a fair price for one in good
optical/mechanical condition? And finally, can anyone suggest an alternative lens,
maybe a 3rd party?

What appeals to me is the small size and weight for the focal length and speed of the
lens. It would see a lot of use on a MX at wide aperatures. I currently have a zoom
and a macro prime covering the focal range, neither of which meets both my size and my
speed criteria.

Thanks for listening,
Steven.

RE: ??? on SMC M 120/2.8 and street candids

2002-07-31 Thread steven gilson

Thanks for the suggestion, Lukasz.

If I can't track down a M 120/2.8 at a reasonable price I will probably go for either
a SMC-M 100/2.8 or 135/3.5. Can somebody tell me about these lenses when used wide
open or close to it? I'm mainly interested in their performance when focused from 15
feet and farther.

I really would like something a little longer than 100mm as I already have a macro in
that length and a 35-105/3.5 zoom. I know nobody likes the SMC-A 135/2.8 or the Tak-A
135/2.5, but the faster SMC 135s are too $$$ and really bigger than what I want. Was
there a Ricoh or Vivitar S1 135/2.8 (non-macro)?

Re: OT: Carry everywhere toy

2002-07-18 Thread steven gilson

I have one too. I stopped using it because I got sick of people thinking it was a
mini camcorder and trying to perform in front of it.

But it does pack a mess of features in. I thought the best thing about it was the way
you can operate everything with only one hand on it. If yours doesn't have it, look
on eBay for the action grip which makes this even easier when biking or whatever else.

Re: Always at the ready - OT

2002-07-10 Thread steven gilson

I do the same as Tom; Stylus Epic in my pocket. It's usually loaded with some kind of
400 color print. It's fast, durable and reliable and I bought it especially for this
purpose. I actually wanted a Rollei Prego Micron, but at over twice the price I
couldn't justify it for an emergency camera. If I am going somewhere for
non-photographic reasons but want a camera just in case I take my Super Program with
a 35-105/3.5A attached to it and a faster prime in my pocket.

BTW, does anyone know of an ever-ready type case that will fit the SP/35-105 combo?

OT: limiting DOF for macro???

2002-05-23 Thread steven gilson

I need advice on how to severly limit DOF for macro work. I realize that most (all?)
macro equipment tends to reduce DOF. I want to limit the sharp area to a few
millimeters on a (35mm) frame filling shot of a 5 inch subject. What is the best set
up for this? Tubes, reversing ring, close-up filters, dedicated macro lens?

I have no true macro equipment now so I will be buying whatever it is that I need so
cost is a factor. I do have a 35-105/3.5 and 80-200/4 macro zooms plus 28/2.8,
50/1.4, 135/3.5 and 200/3.5 primes if any of these can be worked to the set up.

Thanks in advance for all replies
Steven.

Re: OT: limiting DOF for macro???

2002-05-23 Thread steven gilson

Ok, let me try this again. I do realize that I don't need specialized macro equipment
to get the framing I want. But what I have does not limit the depth of field to the
level I'm looking for. I have tried this shot with both the 35-105 and the 50 wide
open. So maybe I don't need macro equipment to get the effect I want, I only asked
about it because I know that true macro set-ups tend to have very limited DOF. So,
I'll ask again this way:

What lens set-up, macro or not, will give me the narrowest DOF when photographing a 5
inch subject filling a 35mm frame?

Thanks again,
Steven.

Re: Pentax Super Program

2002-04-17 Thread steven gilson

Did all of you saying that this is a bad deal actually look at the auction?

I don't think $182.50 is so bad for a SP, A 50/1.7, filters, bag, etc.

If you don't want/need the extras you might find the body/lens combo for less, but you
could easily pay more than this to buy it all separately.

WTB MX winder socket cover

Vivitar S1 70-210 vs. SMC-A 70-210 opinions please

2002-03-29 Thread steven gilson

I am thinking about upgrading the long zoom I keep for my travel kit. I currently use
a Sears 80-200/4 Macro. The 2 best options seem to be the SMC-A and S1. I'd be
interested to hear what anyone with experience with both of these lenses has to say.
Or if anyone has a suggestion on another lens they like in this class.

Too be honest I have no huge complaints with the Sears. It's sharpness and flare
resistance are decent, although it does lack contrast. Where would I notice
improvements?

This lens would be used on MF bodies for outdoor street/nature photography and
occasional sports events. I am not concerned with any macro or portait abilities as I
have that covered with other lenses.

Re: More KX ?s, please help

2002-03-19 Thread Steven Gilson

I plan on dropping both the MX and K1000se. I really don't need more than 2 bodies.
I want to keep my SP to use my A series lenses and TTL flash, and I want one manual
backup with as many features as possible. The KX has a true mirror lock-up which the
MX lacks, and I like the fell of the larger body and spacing around the controls on
the top panel better. But I am still wondering how the screen brightness of the KX
compares to the K1000se. Any comments?

More KX ?s, please help

2002-03-15 Thread Steven Gilson

I had recently decided to replace my MX and K1000SE with a KX to complement and back
up my Super Program. I prefer the K series body size to the M, but I would like the
extra features that the K1000 lacks. But from recent discussions here it seems as if
the KX has a dim viewfinder. So I'm wondering:

1. Is the KX viewfinder significantly darker than the K1000SE?

2. Can it be replaced/upgraded?

3. Are there any other full featured all manual k-mount bodies that have a bright
viewfinder? Maybe a Ricoh? (No, I can't afford a LX)

OT: help me rate a camera for sale

2002-02-21 Thread Steven Gilson

I know this is difficult without actually seeing it, but I have a camera/lens package
that I am planning on selling and I would like some opinions on how to rate it.

It is a Canon L1 Rangfinder with a 50mm 1.8 and original eveready case. The camera
and lens are in full working order, including all shutter speeds. There are no dings
or deep scratches on the metal or leather, but they are not as shiny as a true
collector would probably want. The lens glass is clean and scratch/scuff free and I
have the original cap. The aperature ring seems a little stiff (compared to my Pentax
lenses) and a little of the paint has worn off the focus ring. The case has some
scuffing on the outside and the stiching is pulling on one of the seams in the cover.
I also have the original manual. but the binding has desintagrated and it is poor
shape.

I'd be happy if somebody could give a 1-10 rating or a bargain-excellant-mint type.
I'd be grateful if someone could recommend where I would get the most interest in a
camera like this. I inherited it from my grandfather and have shot a few rolls, but
don't really find it has an advantage over my MX, which I'm more comfortable with.

Thanks in advance,
Steven.

Re: OT:Travel Tripod question

Has anyone tried the Velbon Maxi 343? I've only read about in Pop Photo, but it
sounds to good to be true. I still don't know about a 300mm with no mount, but for
anything else. If someone can give me favorable report on one, I'll probably buy one.
I think they go for about $80 from BH.
