Agreed, I saw these images linked in another forum a few days back. The last image strikes me most, it represents to me the antithesis of the protected worked in the west these days, and it would make a great promotional ad for cancer. -- Rob Studdert (Digital Image Studio) Tel: +61-418-166-870 UTC +10 Hours Gmail, eBay, Skype, Twitter, Facebook, Picasa: distudio -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: 1940s US photos
From: Joseph McAllister Thanks Sandy. Wonderful set of images of all over the US about the time I was born. Fascinating! In the comments section a few were asking about the film, that maybe it was Ektachrome, as that appeared around 1940. As some of the shots are on sheet film, I tried to look up at Kodak what the notching codes were, but they only reference what they are currently producing. Anyone still have their Photo Lab Index that can confirm the code is for Kodachrome sheet film? The same code might be used on several different films. The notch code shown appears to be currently un-assigned. I found a useful reference though: _The Acetate Negative Survey : Final Report_ by David G. Horvath It appears that the only copy exists in the University of Louisville University Libraries. BUT, there's a PDF file ... http://louisville.edu/library/ekstrom/special/files/Acetates A quick perusal of Appendix B, and it appears to be Eastman Kodak Notch reference #14, which for that date would be 6137 Kodachrome, Daylight (1938) Also a Power-Point presentation by a Kodak Engineer - Ronald Andrews references some of the images: http://homepage.mac.com/randrews4/Kodachrome/KodachromeC.htm http://ronald.andrews.googlepages.com/kodachrome -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I've never drunk Pabst so I don't know what it's like, but I've never heard of the notion that blending improves beer quality. Indeed, I rather think they're wrong in their coffee analogy too. Some good coffee is blended (French blend espresso, for instance), but most is not. I do like US beer advertising from that era though - it has a certain style. I have a 1960s tin tray somewhere which advertises Schlitz "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous" - it's a great design, like pop art. Some very much of their time but some difficult to place in the right decade; I thought that without the caption, number 43 could have been taken anywhere up to the early '60s. So many things we see today are still around. Also of particular interest were the cars - or lack of them. I looked through some photos I took of my local area in the early '70s, and you are struck by the lack of cars parked outside houses. My neighbours who had cars, still parked them in their garages when not in use without fail; today garages are often full of anything but cars.
