lighting - the clouds have an influence as they are reflecting some of
the light from the town which will be generally tungsten - so any
tweaking to 'correct' for perceived imbalance is accepted in my book. I
generally went for the 'look' as I physically recall observing at the

If you want some fun reading, Google color temperature of lightning.

I generally find that any *fixed* WB will work because in Camera Raw I'm
going to use the eye dropper tool to select some spot in the clouds that
I think should be more or less 18% gray and then sync the rest of them
to the first one.

Very nice, especially the way the cloud is lit.

I went to the Dennis Hopper exhibition after work today, and cycled home at
about 9pm, all the time watching the lightning flashing in the dense black
clouds in the east. Felt the occasional fat drop of rain, but no downpour. The
whole thing was a magnificent sight, and when I was cycling along the river in
Greenwich the walkway was lined with people taking photos of the lightning over
the Dome, and each time there was a flash a great cheer went up from the
passengers on the pleasure cruisers.

The 3 others on the Fuji X-E1 as well? Very nice.

Yes, many thanks.

The X-E1 is very good but I want an X-T1 as I still have issues with the
EVF [on the X-E1]. I still find it very difficult in coming from an
optical viewfinder to electronic for stills. Having used EVF for 25
years on video cameras, you might be forgiven for finding that
surprising. I think it's due to the different mindset needed for each
application. The ergonomics with the X-E1 and wide lens, no problem. But
the 85 is a handful on it.

It's probably just a generic ship's figurehead. Maybe, being Cornwall,
it's Admiral Benbow. Although he was only one leg short of the full
brace, whereas your chap has had most of his body shot away below the
shoulders. He must be a very high rank indeed.

Interesting - I am curious now - I will try and find out where it came
from and who it is modelled on!

Apparently the place was used as film sets for both Poldark in the 70s
and latterly Doc Martin. It looks suspiciously like a filming prop to me!

I find that image quite effective and pleasing. There is nice
contrast between the smoothness of the sand or mud and the rough
texture of the large dark rock mass on the right. I also like the way
the left-pointing wedge of the rock on the right is complemented by
the right-pointing distant land masses and cloud bank in the left
distance. It makes for a strong composition, balanced in one sense
and unbalanced in another.

Thanks for looking Dan. I burnt the sky in a bit but I didn't touch the
rock - although it looks like I've either burnt in the top half or
dodged the bottom half - I didn't! It's a straight in-camera mono
conversion. When I saw it I was reminded of St Ansel's northern
California beach work, although I don't for one second compare myself to
him - but the inspiration is there. Really appreciate your comments.

This is a very nice gallery that captures the feel of

and 9.

My favorite area of the Cornish coast is up near
Tintagel. What an amazing area! Most of the boats
available to shoot there are wrecks, though.

Nice stuff, Mr. Cotty. I particularly like the silhouette of the woman,
the boats on the water (looking down), and the shot of the harbor with
the Canadian Seagull.

Thanks Steady. Er, a 'Canadian Seagull' ?? Pray tell, how do you figure
that ?

Cheers,
  Cotty

I figure that since Canada has been more than willing to shoulder the
responsibility for the flying rats that we call Canadian Geese, it can probably
taken on the burden of the garbage-picking seagulls as well. Hence, Canadian
Seagull. That sort of takes the pressure off the rest of us. We can just keep
wishing they'd all go back to Canada where they belong vbg.

and #7 standout most to me. All are quite fine.

While I don't for a moment pretend to speak for all Canadians (Mr.

I personally quite like seagulls.

As far as Canada Geese, we didn't name them, Americans did. As
Wheatfield said, they were trying to get back at us for that whole
burning down the Whitehouse during the War of 1812 thing...

And, they're not Canadian Geese. They're Canada Geese. It's their
name, not their nationality. vbg

Perhaps.

Toronto, however, has plenty of the buggers. I don't know, maybe they
followed the ships along the St. Lawrence Seaway to the Great Lakes?

Whatever, the garbage dumps, as well as the harbour are full of 'em.

Great stuff there. Makes me want to take a second (and third...)
look.

Botanists and engineers alike will find the Eden Project
interesting:

You are right! Silent Running! Although at first, when I saw the
domes, er, *biomes*, I thought about Logan's Run...
Well done!

Ciao,

Gianco

Yeah, it's at a viewing area for an open-cast china clay mine. They blast
the clay straight off the surface of the cliffs dug into the mountain.
The diving bell object is a relic from days gone by, but damned if we
could figure out what it was
