Re: Favorite Lens Survey Results UPDATE 59

> 2 - You must choose Your Favorite Pentax Lens.

2. And, would you be willing to sponsor it with your time, Albano?

2- You must have personal experience with it, no matter if you own it,
owned it, borrowed it, rented it. You must have used it (it's not a wish
list).
3- Again, you must choose JUST ONE.
4- Send the answers OFF-LIST, TO ME, to don't disturb list members. I'll
not count votes sent to list.

DISCLAIMER: For the "winner" category, I'll count all the variants of a
same model (ie all Spotties together), so don't start arguing "hey, you
must put all this or that together". Thanks

Re[2]: Favorite wide lens?

2002-04-26 Thread Bruce Dayton

Debra,

I had a K mount Tokina RMC 24/2.8 once. I liked it fine. It was
metal and very solid like most Tokina lenses I have encountered. The
optical quality was reasonably good. As usual, flare is a bigger
issue with it than a Pentax SMC. Remember that the wider you go, the
more easy it is to get flare. But for the price, the Tokina was quite
good. I think I paid $70 dollars for mine a couple of years ago.

I understand. And you're not alone - there's a lot of PDML-ers that
swear by that lens. And I suppose that I've got to try it some
time... (Or, maybe I should give another look at the A 24/2.8, a

Heh-heh. Yes, Bob, 20mm takes a little getting used to. But that's
because it really ~is~ wide. Not as wide as the 15/3.5, of course,
but wide enough that shooting requires some care, more than what's
required with a your 24. But, that's also why I like 20mm more than
24mm - it really ~is~ wide, isn't it?

Now back to your photo - you do have to admit, Bob, that you
~should~ have seen that coming right in the viewfinder, right? ;-)

Hi Deb,

I used to have a Tokina 24mm. I'm pretty sure it was metal.
I don't remember it as being a particularly bad lens, but I didn't use it
apart from one one cycle trip to the pyrenees.
I sold it after that.

I have an optically identical A 15/3.5, and I have to agree with
your summary of its superb qualities, JCO. However, it still loses
out (along with the A 16/2.8 Fisheye) to my A 20/2.8 for "preferred
wide angle lens". Both the 15/3.5 and (especially) the 16/2.8 are
very specialized lenses, made for very specialized images - images
that the 20/2.8 can't handle. However, most of my own wide angle
shooting doesn't usually need something ~that~ wide, and the 20/2.8
serves nicely as the proper tool most of the time. Furthermore, the
bulky (especially the 15/3.5) and rather dear super wide angles
simply don't get carried around very often - they are usually
sitting at home unless I know ahead of time that they would be
useful - while the compact 20/2.8 is almost as portable as a 50mm
normal lens (well, except for the flaring filter flange - ), and
has seen a lot of miles.

My favourite wide angle lens has to be the M24-35/3.5. Good range, not
too long a zoom, and compact. My favourite focal length for wide angle is
a toss-up between 24mm and 35mm.

Seriously (and I've probably said this before) when I was shooting Contax a lot

Wow, what a range for WA's. 17 to 31mm.
I never owned anything wider than a 28mm, but after seeing what a 35mm 645
(equivalent to 23mm) can do, I feel that anything in the 20 to 24mm would be

I am thinking of selling the russian one, since it has been collecting

My favourite is the Pentax-M 20mm. I don't tend to use the 24-28-35 lenses
I have/had. I either use the 20mm or the Tamron SP 17mm f3.5 but the first
one is my favourite.

My choice for preferred (i.e., my most used) w/a is the A 20/2.8.
It's compact, sharp, has great contrast, never vignettes with
filters, and I do like 20mm for an all-around w/a focal length.

Obviously this is a very personal thing, but I prefer 20mm for an
all-around wide-angle focal length. I also find 28mm sometimes a
bit "blah" (as in "not really all that wide"), but I also find that
24mm, while different, is not overly different. On the other hand,
it seems to me that 15mm is too extreme for a lot of wide-angle
shooting (it's mostly for very specialized images) (and the 15/3.5
is too big to carry around "just in case" anyway), so (for me) 20mm
is the "sweet spot" for most wide-angle situations. But, as I said,
this is a very personal thing.

Hm,

That 15mm SMCT still takes the cake.
The 45mm for 67 is a close second though.
I need a 75mm for my speed graphic, especially

I had a SMCA 28/2.8 and a Vivitar 19/3.8 for a long time. Being the
Vivitar what it is (not so good, really) I used mainly the 28. This
until I got a SMCK 24/2.8, now I think I'm addicted. 28mm FOV seems to
generate in me about the same reaction it does in Stan..."blah". I think
I could get rid of it as it haven't seen daylight in a long time.

24mm rules!

SMC Pentax-A 2.8/24
24mm is one of my most used focal lengths. I've also tried
the Tamron (Adaptall2) 2.5/24 and the Vivitar 2/24. All of them
are good lenses, but the Pentax's coating and handling is
much better than the other two.

Other wideangles I use:
Tokina 3.5/17 SL
Cosinon-W 2/28
SMC Pentax-M 2/35

wouldn't it make more sense to count only incremental votes (meaning,
if someone didn't vote, that means that they just didn't change their
mind/preferences)? that would result in a lot less mail traffic for the
maintainer, i would guess.

And runner ups...

>Kodak Kodachrome 64 (6)
>Kodak Supra 400 (5)

etc.

As the number of answers are quite low, a better view would come from
a choice of 1 film in each category (slides, b&w and color neg) or 3
films overall. But that would mean more hours in front of an excel
sheet...

my favorite April PUG entries

2002-04-02 Thread Amita Guha

This month's PUG features lots of sensual photos...lots of cool
textures, and some that even evoked memories of scents. My favories:

" Orange " by Thibault Grouas - it looks like a celestial event :)

" Juicy " by Harald Rust - it just looks so appetizing!

" Peachy II " by Steve Larson - I could smell them just by looking at
them

Lone Crusader " by Satish Kumar S.K. - I love mood, and the muted
tones of the gradient in the background

" Tulip " by Aconquija - simply exquisite

" Unlikely to move again ... " by Jan van Wijk - that car looks so
lonely!

" Baseball Window " by Chris McNutt - it looks like the ball wants to
go out and play

" Kitchen Window, San Antonio " by Dick Jones - I really like the
soft light and the shape of the window

" Frozen " by Dave Kennedy - I love the colors. This almost looks
like a fossil in stone.

" Woodscape " by Frits J. Wuthrich - what wonderful shapes, colors
and textures!

" Before the Supper " by Gianfranco Irlanda - I like the contrasts

" Sifonazos " by Facit - I like the colors and textures

Amita,

Thank you for your kind words. The shot was taken on a pleasant autumn day
last year - I was having a good afternoon's shooting and taking my time
(using my tripod).
I must use my tripod, I must use my tripod,...

Hi Amita,
Thank you for your friendly comments.
The photo I captured that evening was a lucky combination
of different elements coming together.
I also enjoyed your website, especially the trip reports to Las Vegas,
Red Rock Canyon, and Death Valley.
Nice shots inside the casinos, especially the Venetian glass ceiling.
Congratulations on your wedding.

my favorite March PUG entries

2002-03-17 Thread Amita Guha

I usually do this a lot earlier in the month, but I've been a bit tied
up this month. Anyway, here are my favorites, in no particular order.

--Amita

" Winter " by Petr Pazour - I love the framing and the way the sun
contrasts with the long shadow of the tree.

" South Haven Dawn " by Mark Cassino - The colors are great and I
love lighthouses. :)

" Cosmic Karma " by Harald Rust - the colors are amazing. You had
good karma indeed to get this shot!

" Tree on Thames, Lechlade, 2002" by Cotty - a very tranquil vista

" grain " by Ann Sanfedele - I never would have known that such
interesting subjects could be found in Kansas. :)

" Old Chestnut " by Geoffrey Stevens - a beautiful composition

" Valley of Faith " by Richard Klein - I love the mood

" Cold Rainbow " by Alexey Tikhonov - it looks like a painting

" Layers " by Jaume Lahuerta - I like the mood and, well, the layers.
:)

" Lonely One " by Ken Waller - just a really cool shot. Love the
little tree. The cloud behind the hill adds some nice depth to the
photo.

" Long way home.. " by Dan Carson - ah, the call of the open road, or
railway...

" Fishing boats " by Artur Ledóchowski - love the mood, and the
contrast of the colorful boats against the muted background

" Bruce " by Philip Stone - just because I adore black Labs :)

" Californian Poppy " by Leon Altoff - simply exquisite.

" Bubble stack " by Jostein Øksne - love the color, and the
otherworldly-looking subject

" Declan " by Darryn Richter - a photogenic kid and a talented dad
make a great combination :)

" Annami " by Matti Eteläperä - I love the lighting and the depth of
field in this one

" playing field " by Wessel Sijl - I love the feeling of lonliness in
this picture

" Barn " by Joe Collins - this one has a nice cozy feel

" Fort Ross " by Dick Jones - I like the different contrasts in this
photo: the contrast of the texture of the wood siding against the hill
in the background, and the contrast of the hill against the sky, and
the sky against the clouds

" Homestead " by Kevin Waterson - I really like the feel of this one,
but I wish the image were a little sharper. Was it a little blurry on
purpose? Maybe you could have sharpened up the scan in an image
editing program.

" Grandma's house " by Matjaz Osojnik - love the contrast of the
socks against the wall and the pattern of the curtains, and the
composition

I had a Durst M301 for a number of years. It was an
extraordinary enlarger. I read someplace that the Durst Neonon
lenses were made by Pentax. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Re: Durst Laborator - My Favorite Enlarger

2002-03-10 Thread T Rittenhouse

Durst made some great enlargers. The one you are thinking about was sold as
the S45 in the US. The 138 was the same enlarger with 5x7 carriers and
condensers. Their 10x10, usually advertised as 8x10, was a real monster. All
of these were built, well..., well.

I just checked their webpage. The 1200 is the biggest they have listed. I
hadn't thought of it but, satellite mapping had probably pretty much done
away with 5x5 to 10x10 aerial photography. That is what most of those big
enlargers were used for.

Back in the sixties Durst made an M35 enlarger that I think was the best
35mm enlarger ever made.

They used to have, and maybe still do, a similar model in 4x5 format.
The adjustable table takes a vacuum attachment which holds the paper
perfectly flat and allows borderless, easel-less printing. The table
raises and lowers electrically, and tilts in all planes. The enlarger
head also tilts.

I wanted this enlarger very badly when i first started photography, but
at the time it was over $1200.00 ... it was made of unobtainium. Now
there's no place to put it, and it's still made of unobtainium.

Re: Favorite Film Survey Results UPDATE 43

2002-03-01 Thread Shel Belinkoff

There is no such B&W film as Agfa pan F 50.

Also, There is no Ilford Pan F, it's PanF+. Likewise for Ilford's HP5,
which should probably be HP5+. PanF and HP5 have been discontinued for
quite some time. It's possible, but not likely, that the older films
were the ones intended for inclusion on the list.

The Pentax-FA 3.5-4.5/24-90 is really outstanding.
There are two new images taken with this lens at my site. Hairy - and in the original
slides (and scans, too) you can count every hair - if you like, that is.
All the best!

6x7, not because of any threats, perceived or otherwise.
