Jostein,
Amazing landscapes.
One of my favorites is Snowscooter for the scale it shows.
The sailboat dwarfed by the cliffs is magnificent as well.
Who was the shooter carrying both rifle and camera?

I liked the snowmobile's and the green ice and the shot of the snow

Striking array of shots recording a pleasing trek in a stunning landscape.
Especially enjoyed: #5, 10, 14, 17, 21, 29, 33, 38 and 51.

#10 made me smile when I noticed the 'plywood' dog. ;)

#21 made me gasp, but was subdued somewhat when I noticed the uncooperative
last reindeer. :)

Thanks for the treat!

Jostein! wow!
These should be a book...

In context of the entire essay, the one that I had a trouble seeing
(literally) is the least intersting, although I could
see it in this presentation... did you lighten it a bit? Did you show
it first because you doubted it yourself and wanted feedback?

Or was it the first one you worked on...

There are so many here that are stand-outs -
If someone said we are curating a show and Joestein can only submit 10
or 15 photos from this lot, I think I'd pick these...
but not in any order of preference... just in order of appearance in
your portfolio

1, 4, 7,12,14,16,19,21,24,29, 31!! , 33,38,40,43!!,49

Ok thats 16... such gorgeous stuff!

So when are you going to work for National Geographic or something??? I
know, it wouldn't be fun if it was an assignment.

According to this page

built in Germany originally, re-fitted in Nederland as a 2 masted
schooner and seems to be berthed in the ice for 3/4 months a year and
used by Nutty Norwegians and others as a base for further exploration on
skidoos.

Nice boat!

Even when being there, it's easy to be fooled by the dimensions. Every
feature is further away and every ascent steeper than you expect. :-(

The rifle gal was our guide for the trip. She turned out to be quite a
personality. Enough merits already to deserve a NatGeo article all of
her own. I asked her if she had any big projects this year. She
shrugged and told me she had to work as guide for a couple of years to
save up for the next big one. This year her only plans were to cross
Greenland by ski, along the old Nansen route. She didn't like to talk
much about her personal projects, but I discovered her previous
achievement was to circumnavigate the islands of South Georgia by
kayak in a group of four, last November. :-)

Re: GESO - My Svalbard images

2011-03-28 Thread AlunFoto
Glad you like it, Ann! :-)
The night shot of the mine on the hillside may have been altered, I'm
not sure. I did the editing on the laptop, and tweaked it back and
forth after posting the PESO. This publishing was done from my desktop
PC, after transferring the whole bundle of shots from the laptop. I
quickly lose track of my versioning with those operations.

To be on assignment to do shoot stuff like that wouldn't bother me
much. But I don't think I'll be working for NatGeo anytime soon, Ann.
:-(

Met a Dutch photographer on assignment up there, btw. He was
commissioned by a travel agency.

Re: GESO - My Svalbard images

2011-03-29 Thread AlunFoto
The boat is a schooner that they anchor in Tempelfjorden each winter
and let it freeze in. It is then used for accommodation in an
"adventure travel" concept. Guests are picked up in Longyearbyen by
dog sled, and are entertained with excursions. The trip to
Longyearbyen takes about two hours on a nice day by snowmobile, I
think, so it's probably about the double by dog sled.

The last of the three images has a seal resting on the ice between me
and the boat. The seals carve breathing holes in the ice from
underneath, and come up to rest. That's where the polar bear hunts
them, btw.

The camera is working very well indeed. I'm considering to sell off
more of my K-mount stuff, but have to work the big dee through a
spring season first, to decide what I will let go.

my only regret is that I didn't stockpile 645 lenses a year ago. Could

That's a good idea, but all you really need is to make sure some other

Absolutely stunning!

The night time shots are great and those featuring the ship (eg. 29, 32)
have that early 'polar expedition' feel - like some of Frank Hurley's
photos on the Shackleton expedition.

But my absolute favourite has to be 19. The combination of diffused
light and shadow is simply superb.

Thanks, Dan! The guy on the stone pillar is indeed a person. His
girlfriend was standing next to me, so I asked her if she thought he
would mind having his picture taken. She said he wouldn't mind, and as
I lifted the camera, she called out to him to strike a pose.

Could have left the camera there for hours if I didn't have to
