Georgia this weekend, GFM (camera clinic) next weekend
I just arrived at my parents' place in Thomasville, Georgia yesterday after 3 days traveling by motorcycle. On Wednesday night I stayed in Harrisburg, PA and met up with occasional PDML'er Scott Loveless for beer and banter. We mocked all the rest of you behind your backs quite mercilessly. You're welcome. The motel I stayed at turned out to be quite a bit sketchier than depicted on the web, even though it was a big hotel chain. I think the photos are seriously out of date because the place is in need of a refurb. That said, it was less sketchy inside than out and perfectly clean; quite acceptable for a one night stopover. And the view of the river and the state capital out front was wonderful. I'll post a photo later. On Thursday I went as far as Winston-Salem and stayed with friends there. Friday was the longest and toughest travel day. The farther south you go the hotter and more humid it gets. I managed to dodge all the thunderstorms dotting the southeast (and a speeding ticket on I-75 -- it went to the hulking SUV next to me) but it was still taxing. There was at least one error in the directions Google maps provided but there were several errors in reality that were more problematic. That is to say, several roads correctly identified by Google were not identified at all by whatever local agency is supposed to put up sign posts. By 3:00 yesterday afternoon all the fun had been sucked out of the day's travel and I just wanted to be done with it. It was blazing hot and I was so tired I couldn't even enjoy blitzing the back roads that comprised the last part of the journey. I arrived around 5:30. So I have several days to spend here before blasting up to Grandfather Mountain for the Camera Clinic next weekend. It is (thankfully) a much less taxing event than the Nature Photography Weekend (no photo contest). Doug Brewer will be present and perhaps a few other known friends of the PDML. Full reports will of course be forthcoming. --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Hey, gang! Registration for the Camera Clinic opened on Friday. I was able to register Christie and myself this morning, so it looks like they haven't filled it yet. Re: Anyone go to the GFM Camera Clinic last weekend?
Interesting presentations. No one hanging around the cabin. No PDML Central. Not as many folks camping as expected. Good conversations. I actually camped this time. Drank all of 5 bottles of beer. Found out my Olympus C-5050Z will get a focus lock without pre-flash in light I could hardly see through the optical viewfinder in around the campfire. Found a great place to have breakfast in Newland. There was a lady my age attending, it turned out she actually went to the same high school I did. Did not know her from then (6K+ students). Was motivated enough that I actually came home and added some content to my digital webpage. List members noticed: Doug Cesar Nico Matt Charlie B Self Seems like there were a couple of others, but my memory is defective. Don't know if I have time for a detailed report, but yeah, I went. Rittenhouse was there, and John Weber, and a few lurkers. As usual, we had some last-minute tech glitches, and those were handled seamlessly, or seamlessly enough. I'm pretty sure the Office Liaison/PR Gal/Official Presence went home and cried herself to sleep every night. But she bucked up and hung with us all weekend. This is, of course, the =reason= she cried herself to sleep every night. I blame Cesar. Overall, I thought it went quite well. More when I get a chance to catch up. A week in Colorado, one day at work, and then the trip to NC have me pretty bottled up. And then keep him in clean room conditions until his immune system recovers. Serious stuff. Yes, that's right. I've been talking regularly to Don. I don't envy him this, but his attitude is upbeat and everyone who has had any dealings with cancer knows that attitude is at least 50% of the cure. A model I know was told early this year that she had advanced esophageal cancer and three months maximum to live. She decided that she was not going to die, and was going to be there for her daughter as she grows up. She was on chemo until last week. Her latest scans showed no sign of the cancer, and they took her off chemo. I think her attitude is what made the cancer go away. Also, it appears Bob Shell won't be able to make it as a speaker. Big let-down there. Unfortunately, that is true as well. I really wanted to come and had prepared a nice talk. Maybe next year. Howdy, gang! I hope I'm not posting a dupe, but I just noticed that registration is open for the camera clinic at Grandfather Mountain in August. http://grandfather.com/events/cclinic.htm I'll be there. -- Scott Loveless http://www.twosixteen.com -- You have to hold the button down -Arnold Newman

I am supposed to go to one professional meeting a year. The big American Chemical Society meetings are about 15,000 chemists, and if that doesn't set off the nerd alert, nothing will. I sit through talks all day on where's the electron? while Debbie goes shopping in Philly. The good news is that the University pays for the hotel and my meals; the bad news is that I pay for the shopping. g Steven Desjardins Department of Chemistry Washington and Lee University Lexington, VA 24450 (540) 458-8873 FAX: (540) 458-8878 [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] 8/3/2004 8:45:26 PM Now THERE's an excuse. Re: GFM Camera Clinic
Probably does not matter, I just checked their website and it says the Camera Clinic is sold out. How you can sell out a free program I don't know, but anyway there are no more seats available. OTOH, if anyone just wants to drop by and visit with other PDML'ers that would be fine. Either Bill Owens, or myself can give you info about that. -- Steve Desjardins wrote: I am supposed to go to one professional meeting a year. Anybody besides my wife and I going to the GFM Camera Clinic Aug 21-22? Bill My son starts school a few days before that, so I'm not going. I *have* visited Grandfather Mountain this summer, anyway (last week, as a matter of fact) so that's something, right? ERN who ended up going past your part of the state after all -- but was in a hurry.

It appears to work just fine with K and M lenses if you use an hand held meter. It may be that is necessary on M lenses. Mark's 15mm K appeared to meter okay using the thumbwheels, but Graywolf's M needed an external meter. IMHO, no big deal. I'm curious to see if the *istD has fast, accurate AF, better than any Pentax yet. I'm also curious to see if the *istD underexposes middle tones like the D100. -- John Mustarde www.photolin.com
GFM Camera Clinic Report (long)
Ah, another great weekend with great company, great photo ops and interesting speakers. We arrived home early yesterday evening totally worn out but with wonderful memories and, hopefully, memorable images. Cesar was already there when we arrived and observed the process of setting up PDML Central, as our camper has come be known. Shortly thereafter, while admiring and talking camera equipment, a doe and her fawn wandered into the picnic area where we were set up. Cesar still had his equipment in his car, most of mine was in the camper. I did have the Yashica Samurai half-frame in hand, and being the stealthy hunter that I am :-), was able to get within about 50 feet or so of them and hopefully got some decent shots. Friday evening was spent in a bull session with the PDML crew along with Mike Johnston and Aristide Economopolous (hope I got the spelling right) where we got a preview of the upcoming programs straight from the horses mouths. Saturday morning and we were off to one of the Grandfather Mountain hiking trails at Mark's recommendation. On arrival, I discovered that the quick release plates for my tripod were on other cameras back at the campground (normal, right?). Anyway, I had taken the Kiev 60 with the 30mm Arsat fisheye and my wife was carrying her brand new ZX-L. While on this expedition, we hopefully good a few good shots, including Mark's shoes. BTW, the PanF negatives look okay considering I was shooting at about 1/4 second hand held. Saturday evening, after the great buffet dinner from the GFM staff, we got to listen to Mike Johnston explain how to decide which images to turn into final prints. Afterwards, back to PDML Central and more bulls**t and beer. Sunday morning and it was time for Aris' program. He is this year's Southern Photographer of the Year. Being a staff photographer for the Newark, NY Ledger-Star he was on hand for the events of last September 11. His photos taken at the scene, some from as close as one block away, were mind boggling, as well as his feelings of what was occurring at the time. Finally, FWIW, anyone that's looking for a good camera for someone just starting in photography, or wants a simple, easy to use camera, give serious consideration to the ZX-L. It can be used for anything from a simple PS to fully manual and anything in between, plus it has the ability to be used with high speed sync and wireless modes with the AF360FGZ. I received my flyer for this year's Grandfather Mountain Camera Clinic http://www.grandfather-mountain.com/events/cclinic.htm As you can see, a darned good lineup of speakers, interesting photo contest, and though not mentioned in the above, lots of camaraderie and beverages at PDML Central.
