To confuse matters a little more, Spanish-speaking countries often
change the composition of family names placing the father family name
first, then the mother's.

I try to use both - actually my passport displays it that way...

I know the Spanish love long titles, but.

Yours play hell with my Mac address book, it using Santos Baeta as your last
name, Miguel dos as your middle name, and Nuno as your first name. And you
wonder why your address is not accepted by Blurb? Computers be computers,
and to this day do not allow my last name to be used correctly, so I feel

I don't have any problem with my Mac address book and my name. Just
forget the 'dos' and keep on reading this email...

First, I'm not Spanish. I'm Portuguese!

Nuno Miguel is my proper name, Santos Baeta is my family name (Santos
from my mother and Baeta from my father). This is the common way of
forming names in Portugal. As for the 'dos', well it's like the 'von'
in John von Newmann - a direct translation is 'from'. When filling
forms I sometimes drop the 'dos'. Usually there is no right way to
fill the fields, and 'dos' is there just to connect my proper name and
my family name.

Name formation is quite interesting subject. Different cultures do it
in different ways. As far as I know, in China it is usual for a name
to be formed, in this order, by a family name, a generation name and a
proper name.

Finally, Blurb accepts my name but doesn't accept my address, just two lines :-(

Simple, use a pointer to an arbitrary length string. For that matter,
the software used to email it worked fine.

A name structure could have a type field that enumerated how the name
was constructed. Likewise, the set of subnames are of a finite set of
types:
family
personal
title
matrilineal
patrilineal

etc.

It's an interesting, but solvable problem.

A better, still direct, translation of 'dos' is 'of', as it gives a

I will corrrect my address book. But as you know, if the name doesn't

Lynching... Pitchfork?

For a lynching I think a rope is more useful

You need a pitchfork when you're in a lynchmob outside the sherrif's office,
then later to prod the guilty sonofabitch when he's swinging.

I prefer a fiery brand but each to their own.

Just give me a damn torch.

Hello!

I want to buy a P&S camera with a viewfinder. Because of the
viewfinder "detail", I narrowed my options to the Leica D-Lux 4 or
Panasonic LX3 - an external viewfinder is available for both.

Is there any real difference between these two cameras?

TIA

As far as the viewfinder "detail", much as I hate to say this, I think
Canon still offers several P&S models with real viewfinders.

Pythonism?!? I'm lost!

Money Python's Flying Circus was a brilliant, irreverent and
influential English sketch comedy series started in the late '60's.
Several of the members went on further fame, including John Cleese and
Michael Palin. They were only on the air for a couple of seasons, but
they also had a couple of movies and travelling live shows after the
series shut down.

Some here know all their sketches by rote.

I want to buy a P&S camera with a viewfinder. Because of the
viewfinder "detail", I narrowed my options to the Leica D-Lux 4 or
Panasonic LX3 - an external viewfinder is available for both.

Is there any real difference between these two cameras?

Re: Leica D-Lux 4 or Panasonic LX3

2009-03-19 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi

I find a quite interesting phenomenon ...

I know many who have purchased the G9/G10 cameras. After an initial
period of delight with them, they find they stop using them, aren't
getting such good results, etc etc. The G10's controls are definitely
nice, if you don't get the picture quality you're looking for, they're
for naught.

I also know many who have purchased the LX3 and DLux-4. I had the LX1.
Although I find cameras this small a little clumsy in use, these
cameras return remarkable image quality. I've exhibited and won awards
with LX1 photographs...

I prefer the looks of the DLux4 ... but might balk at the premium
price. I only use the RAW capture facilities ... Lightroom 2.2 and
above handle them.

The LX3's RAW format is not proprietary, it's supported by Adobe at
least. However Panasonic is using had-coded lens corrections to
compensate for distortion on the lens which some take offense to.

The LX3 has a much better lens and sensor than the G10. The G10 has a
better control layout.

Bugger...!  I've been quite keen on getting a LX3; this confirms my

Minor differences in handling. The LX3 has an integrated grip while
the D-Lux 4 does not, but offers a larger bolt-on grip. The JPEG
rendering is a bit different and the Leica offers a superior software
package. I'd get the LX3 if the integrated grip works for you, but the
Leica if you prefer a larger or smaller package.
