For that reason, I understand at the beginning the 645D will be available in

Then I guess they are going to start setting up a worldwide service net,

I don't think so. Based on the success of the camera in Japan (where they
can service it properly from the start), they can figure out if/how to sell
and service it worldwide.
BTW, I'm not sure at first it will made available in Japan only, perhaps in
other selected markets too. This theory surfaced a few times among Pentax
executives during the long development time of the 645D and I believe it
could be a viable start. Have you noticed that the teaser only appears in
the Japanese website?

I think that's particularly poor logic on the part of Pentax then, the

You aren't too far off.
Actually, Pentax did fairly well supporting their medium format cameras, as
they (especially the 6x7) were used by pros. It was the 35mm market that
they never supported with much in the way of pro level service.

I had all three of my LX bodies in the shop at one time around 1999 or so.
This was when the camera was still current.
They actually tried to tell me that one of them wasn't repairable because of
parts inavailability.

They also tried that game with my A50/1.2 when it lost it's A contact.

Now, if they have closed their European service facilities, it might be very
difficult to get pro level service, since the service guys have more
accepted pro brands to deal with.

If you can find one. It will have to sell well enough to justify upgrades.

I've been getting the impression that the folks responsible for the
K20D, K-m, K7, and K-x are pretty firmly attached to reality.

It's just possible that this particular camera will also be attached to
reality fairly well, and so sell.

I figure in three years, there will have been a couple of upgrades,
and we should be able to pick up the first version for around 4K,
maybe less. That's when I'll get one. Maybe. Although I'm not sure I
 need it.

I'm blue skying now for a 6x7 digital.
They should be able to make a 100mp camera with that amount of real estate to
 work with.

I'm sure Pentax or someone else will eventually market a 6x7 -- or at least a
proportionately larger sensor in a 6x7 body. Maybe when sensor prices come down
to about half of what they are today, which they inevitably will. Going in a
lot of naysayers contended that the sensor was basically a fixed cost that
wouldn't drop a lot. But it seems the price has already come down substantially.

If it's less than 10K, it will sell.

Unfortunately it will be a lot longer than a month until I can afford
it (even if it comes in at the under $10,000 price some have
 speculated).

About as exciting as the newest Ferrari, luxury watch, or whatever.

I'd gladly have scraped together the money for a Pentax DSLR with a
24x36 mm sensor. This 645 is well beyond my reach.

Besides, who'd want to buy a pro camera from a company that has just
reduced its European customer service to NHS level?

Put a Leica or Contax label on it and they might be able to sell a few
to the usual crowd of dentists or surgeons with lots of black money that
they can't spend on cars or boats because it would leave traces. But
Pentax? They've never heard of that.

This is a workhorse of a camera. It's not a Leica that some would wear like a
gold watch. Pro shooters have heard of Pentax. At one time, most of the NY
fashion photographers were shooting Pentax 6x7, and the 645 had a good
following among location shooters. If the 645D comes in under 10K, it will sell
well. No, most of us won't buy one. We're largely advanced amateurs and
lightweight pros, but there is a market for a camera like the 645D.

Ralf, I am thinking that you're being over-well-informed... ;-)
