If this is a bucket list quest and virtually the entire point is that
is to be a photographic journey, then I certainly wouldn't skimp on
the lenses I'm taking.

Instead I would be tempted to take very few clothes and make my first
stop a thrift shop when I hit my destination where I would purchase
clothes for the stay. Next stop a laundromat. Finally, I'd donate them
back to the thrift store before I hit the airport for the return trip
and wear the clothes on my back.

That's an angle I hadn't thought of.

I should have. When I took my RR trip in 2004 I didn't have enough
civilian clothes and I actually bought additional clothes from a couple
of thrift stores while I was in Scotland.

Thanks

I never took the 40 out of the bag. While I wouldn't want to go on a

Take the 18-55 and 80-200 it's easier to get by with a gap between 55

is very peculiar, you'll want a moderate wide more than a super wide.
If you have something smallish and fast, say a 50 f1.4 take that too.
You may never need it but it will give you the ability to shoot in lower
light without flash.

I've got the Sigma 30 f/1.4. Take that instead of the 10-20?

I would definitely want a fast standard lens, I shot for years with just a
58/1.4 on my SRT-101.

If clothing, and what's in your pockets don't count toward the weight limit,
why not invest in a photographer's vest where you can carry half a dozen lenses
in the pockets? Also, do cameras around your neck count toward the weight
limit?

For that matter, when do they weigh you? How many pairs of underwear, shirts
etc. can you wear for long enough to get through the weight check?

I plan to carry my camera around my neck, and I don't think it's counted
toward the baggage weight. No carry-on baggage is allowed, but I can get
away with a few items in my coat pocket.

It's a military aircraft about the size of a Learjet the weight check

Not enough info John. So I'll give two option-sets based on two sets
of assumptions, two out of what is obviously a very large universe of
possible situations.

The plan, such as it is, is to catch a Space-A military hop to RAF
Mildenhall in England via the Patriot Express from BWI to Ramstein.
Probably some time in September. I'm hoping to get there about a month
after the Olympics are over and miss all the security hassles.

The 1 bag, 30lb limit is apparently a local restriction at Mildenhall.

Once I'm on the ground, I'm headed north to see if I can catch the
Jacobite Steam Train from Fort William to Mallaig before it makes its
last run of the season. When I went on my RR trip in 2004 I missed it
by two weeks.

2. Assume you'll be traveling to Rome or London or other significant
metro region. One spare battery at most plus charger, a smaller
handful of SD cards, storage you can download to, something that will
give you net access to upload your images. One body, three lenses:
21mm, 55mm, and 77mm. (I had many more than these on my last vacation
trip - to Rome in 2009 - but the 21mm and 55mm accounted for the vast
majority of my photos.)

Since I have none of those lenses, I'm guessing the K20D w/18-55 kit
lens + at least one other lens, possibly that SMC Pentax-F 80-200 I was
given. Maybe 2 additional lenses if I decide to take the Sigma 10-20.

OR Sigma 10-20, SMC Pentax-F 35-70 SMC Pentax-F 80-200? I'm either
going to be missing the range between 20-35 or between 55-80.

It's really going to force me to travel light, and that's something I've
never been very good at. I'm trying to think this through beforehand,
and fit almost all of my photographic kit in my pockets so they don't
count against my baggage allowance.

I might try to take my K10D body without the grip just a body cap
mounted as a backup. If I remember, it uses the same grip as the K20D,
so if I wanted to shoot with the grip I can just switch it over.

For portable storage/backup, to which you can download without a
computer, I have been pleased with the HyperDrive (3 generations
now.) Built-in rechargeable battery. You can buy the case (including
its logic board, power source etc.) and finish it out with your own
2.5 inch drive.

Storage is likely to be the Netbook I asked about earlier this week. It
should fit in my coat pocket.

Take a monopod and use it as a cane or walking stick while in or near
the airline terminals - that shouldn't count against your weight
limit.

stan

That's an idea I hadn't thought of. I've got one of those collapsible
walking sticks, but it's not sturdy enough to really use as a monopod.
Doesn't go up high enough either.

However, I just checked and the cork ball will fit the screw on my old
monopod. So that looks like a go.

I was thinking of seeing if I could mail my tripod to Cotty stop by to
pick it up on the way north; then mail it back home before I left, but
the monopod idea sounds better.

This may all be just another pipe dream. I had three attempts at Space-A
travel fall through before. Every time I tried to plan a trip while I
was still in the service, I ended up getting mobilized and having to cancel.

And a trip I planned to go out west last January to do some winter
photography at the grand canyon crashed and burned.

Mine's much the same as Paul - *ist-D, 16-45, 50-200 and AF330FTZ flash.
Battery charger
and one spare set of batteries, lens brush, and that's it. For my most recent

In film days I carried MZ-S, Sigma 18-35, FA28-105, and the same flash, plus
some film ,
on the assumption I could buy more in most places. Backup was a MZ-5.

For the film trip, we were limited to a 15kg backpack each, but could also
carry one other
bag, so I had my Lowepro with the camera kit slung in front.

Re: Minimum Kit?

2012-05-19 Thread Darren Addy
IMHO, the F35-70mm is a no-brainer. It is small, light and has close
focusing capabilities that will probably come in handy. You'll
probably take the majority of your shots on that that lens. In fact,
if I had to choose just one lens to take, it would probably be that
one. I'm a huge fan of the Sigma 10-20mm. It gives you wide vistas
that can go far beyond mere snapshots and are good for capturing
building interiors/exteriors as well as landscapes. I would get a
small lightweight tripod that you can set on tables, walls or the
ground for when you need longer exposures (and forget taking the
external flash). I think your 80-200mm will be nice for when you want
more reach, but not sure how much you would actually need/use it. In
any event, I'd try to figure out some kind of wearable for the lenses
that weren't on the camera... keep the camera on my neck at all times
and then just use the bag for the 30lbs of other stuff.

But that's a very handy selection; it's close to what I have in my bag.
I don't have the diffuser, so I squeeze in the 10-17 and my A50/1.5.

Re: Minimum Kit?

2012-05-19 Thread Larry Colen
I'd probably say that my absolute minimum kit would be
K-5
18-250
FA 31/1.8

That would give me a full range of focal lengths, plus a fast standard lens.

There is good argument to substitute the 16-50/2.8 for the 18-250, because on
the K-5 you can get by with f/2.8 in most lighting, it's weather sealed, and
covers the most needed lengths, and maybe a longer zoom, and a small light 50
for indoors, giving up wide angle for weight.

With the K-5 I'm ambivalent about flash, I can get by with faster glass a lot
of the time, and speedlights are a PiTA. You might also be able to find a used
speedlight there for $20 or so if desperate.

Also, I'd bring my carbon fiber monopod and ball head, which fit in my camera
bag. I may bring a tiny tripod that'll use the ball head., not for long
exposures, but in case I want any pictures with me in them. Any gear I
needed, but didn't have, I'd order online, and have it shipped to me there,
then just ship it home separately.

I just picked up 32G class 10 SD cards for something like $40.

is very peculiar, you'll want a moderate wide more than a super wide.

Yeah.

Last time I had to travel uberlight was flying to New York for the bike
messenger world championships in 2005. My bike was the only luggage I could
check to everything else had to go into my messenger bag as carry on.

I took my Leica CL with f2.0 40mm Summicron. That was it. One focal length.

However did I survive?

Gotta say though, I was pretty happy with the pix I came home with...

That being said, were I John, I think I'd take one body and one, maximum two
zooms. I suppose the kit 18-55 plus the 55-300 would cover a sufficiently wide
range.

Depends on where you are going and possible subjects but my most basic
kit is the K-5 and a Sigma 18-125mm zoom. This offers a good range of
focal lengths.

Second choice woud be the K-5 and the Tamron 17-50mm zoom more compact
and larger f2.8 max aperture. Slightly better at wider focal lengths
than the Sigma.

If it got really tight the K-5 and the 21mm limited

Not enough info John. So I'll give two option-sets based on two sets of
assumptions, two out of what is obviously a very large universe of possible
situations.

1. Assume you will be traveling on safari to a place with no internet access,
you'll be there for 10 days, with several shooting sessions per day. Sporadic
electricity. So, a) longer lens is better: 60-250. b) lots of storage space
needed, no chance of uploading to the Cloud: many megabytes of SD cards plus a
netbook, tablet, or other small light mechanism that will allow you to
download/backup your images. c) Spare batteries plus charger. If possible given
weight and volume, add 77mm and 21mm lenses. And of course one body - K5 or K7
or whatever you have.

2. Assume you'll be traveling to Rome or London or other significant metro
region. One spare battery at most plus charger, a smaller handful of SD cards,
storage you can download to, something that will give you net access to upload
your images. One body, three lenses: 21mm, 55mm, and 77mm. (I had many more
than these on my last vacation trip - to Rome in 2009 - but the 21mm and 55mm
accounted for the vast majority of my photos.)

For portable storage/backup, to which you can download without a computer, I
have been pleased with the HyperDrive (3 generations now.) Built-in
rechargeable battery. You can buy the case (including its logic board, power
source etc.) and finish it out with your own 2.5 inch drive.

Take a monopod and use it as a cane or walking stick while in or near the
airline terminals - that shouldn't count against your weight limit.
