Things are pretty quiet here. Spouse working from home doing essential Police
support work, daughter also gobbling bandwidth, ostensibly for online
schoolwork. I am still at work, as I can work alone preparing stuff for the
resumption of classes. I'm in the support side of the science department in an
FE/HE college. I don't do classes so no need to be transferring stuff to
online, although I'm helping our more technically challenged lecturers to do
that. The rest of my team are doing the same thing in other centres.

Traffic is down to what I estimate to be 1970s levels, unfortunately with an
increased percentage of toerag drivers. I could consider cycling if it wasn't
for the aforementioned people and the presence of a couple of substantial hills
en route. I don't think my knees (the reason I gave up cycling in the first
place) could cope with that.

Food and other essentials are reappearing in the shops after the mass panic
buying of a week or so ago.

Rumour has it that we had the first loss of life at work in the last few days.
It's being kept incognito at the moment, presumably while the College
authorities contact the person's contacts. I don't think we're anywhere near
the peak yet. Hopefully, the government's (confused and contradictory) advice
to flatten the curve will work.

What I'm finding really interesting is the British Red Cross's reaction to the
situation. Until December, I was a long-standing, highly trained volunteer in
the first-aid section. In its wisdom the BRC closed that section down as it
wasn't making enough money. Volunteers could transfer to other sections or
leave. Nice. I transferred to the section offering emergency relief - it's
not very skilled work but it's service. The plan seems to be that the
emergency relief volunteers will provide home services (shopping, etc) for
those housebound for various reasons. I asked what the protocols and supply of
PPE was like for the incursions into possibly infected households. The
"manager" told me I could hold my breath whilst delivering, at which point I
considered myself retired from Red Cross life.

good here too. india declared a complete lockdown for three weeks until
april 14 although according to official figures the number of infected
patient stands at 716 and the death toll at 18 (for various reasons,
the official figures are suspect).

for the last six days i have been housebound and i generally go out
shopping for groceries once a day. and it is a delight because hardly
anyone is out there. i've got a teenager who is going to college this
summer in the house but he seems to be taking the lockdown well between
catching up on his reading (history), his backlog of movies and the
occasional gaming on ps4 :) we are of course the lucky ones. there are
heartbreaking images emerging on the plight of migrant labourers and
the homeless:
https://www.news18.com/news/buzz/journalists-capture-heartbreaking-images-of-jobless-migrants-walking-home-after-covid-19-lockdown-2552461.html

media being an essential service here, we start working from this
monday. with all public transport suspended, the office is arranging
transport. i hope to take the necessary precautions but it'll be a
welcome change. i hope you do too stay safe.

Good like Christine and everyone. It's important for your mental health to get
outside as much as you can within the limits of your local rules. Over here we
can go out for one exercise session, walk, run or cycle, per day, plus
shopping. People where i am seem to be fairly reasonable about keeping two
metres apart. I generally go out for a ride in the morning for an hour, and a
walk 20 minutes along the river to a supermarket in the late afternoon to pick
up fresh veggies etc. This morning I went for a 30-minute run on the riverside
path around Greenwich Peninsula, and cycled 30 minutes each way to a
supermarket in the afternoon.

The weather is still beautiful, but quite cold. There's very little traffic and
the air is clean, so it's a great pleasure to be out.

We are keeping our French classes going over Skype, but it's not as much fun as
personal contact.

I work during the day and we're well set up for home working, but my ancient
personal laptop has given up the ghost so I'm having to do everything with my
iPhone (my ancient iPad's not up to it), which is very inconvenient. I'm
arranging to cycle in to the office next week, currently closed except for
security, to pick up the laptop I have there.

Re: OT: Stay Home, Stay Safe, Stop the Spread

2020-03-26 Thread Mark Roberts
We're pretty much locked down here, though I don't think we're
required to be. Yet. But with Dr. Lisa in the house we're on a pretty
short leash :-) Though Lisa and I are edging ever closer to the
high-risk age group, her 92-year-old mother who lives with us is
decidedly there, so we have to watch out for her sake.

All my courses have moved on line, of course. Fortunately, I've always
had a lot of web material of my own. I'm trying to crank out YouTube
tutorials but it's a lot of work! I'd much rather be teaching in
person. In a couple of days our extended two-week spring break ends
and I'll see how engaged the students really are. Crossing my
fingers...

Next week Lisa goes back to work. Being a pathologist she doesn't
generally interact with patients or the public but it's still going to
increase her exposure.

Our home situation is good. Everything, including the hospital, is
walking distance for us (we usually fill up the car with gas once a
month and usually put less than 5000 miles per year on it). We've got
uncrowded places we can walk or run. One benefit of all this is that
I've been able to get out running more often. I just checked my log
and was astonished to find I've run 47 miles in the past week. So
unless I get sick and die I'll be very fit by the end of this ;-)

Stay healthy, my friends.

I spent most of the day making one of these ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1=ZusqX4Cfa3w=emb_logo

... slightly modified since I don't have access to the kind of filters they use.

I didn't have a kit, so I made it from the materials I have on hand. My material
is a bit thicker & I'm not a professional seamstress, so assembling my mask
didn't go quite as smoothly as the video.

The shell is a tightly woven polyester (like the fabric that covered your
grandmother's couch) and I sacrificed a high quality (linen?) dinner napkin for
the liner.

But I only made three mistakes I had to go back & rework. And one of those is
NOT MY FAULT ... I cut the elastic longer than the pattern called for and it
still ended up too short & I had to replace it with still longer elastic.

For the filter I'm using 10-12 cup Mr.Coffee filters - 2x doubled over to give
me four layers in front of my nose & mouth.

You can download the pattern here:

https://diymask.site/

I also have these gloves (I keep a box around just for scut work):

https://www.amazon.com/mil-Nitrile-Powder-Free-Gloves-Medium/dp/B00O3A00U8

Wearing them when I go out should be sufficient reminder not to touch my face.

I am staying home. I didn't make my weekly shopping trip this last Tuesday, but
I will run out of 4-cup filters for my Mr. Coffee early next week (I have an
almost full box of the 10-12 cup filters but they won't work in my coffee maker.

I've already tried. They flop over & I end up with a pot full of coffee grinds.

So I probably WILL be making a shopping trip next Tuesday.

I'm not counting on the mask to keep me from getting COVID19, but I hope if I do
somehow get it & have to go out again during the pre-symptomatic contagious
period the mask might help me not to be the one spreading it around.

We just got an emergency alert via our mobile phones that the City of Chicago
is closing down the lakefront, beaches etc, which I think is a good idea.

I’ve been pretty busy with shifting my teaching to online. Our community
college district shifted pretty quickly as things turned, and faculty have
really risen to the occasion. This week I’ve had video sessions with students,
and I’ve been greatly inspired by students wanting to persist with the semester
despite these difficult circumstances.

What is worrisome is finding food and supplies. I haven’t been out in 10 days
expect for a 30 minute walk in an empty park. I’m not that keen on going to
the store, but I will have to in the next few days, and, of course, I will take
precautions. Ordering online is great, but so much is out of stock and the
wait times can sometimes be a bit long, but it just requires us to do a bit of
rationing and be smart about how we use up supplies. A constant refrain in the
house is “we’ll just have to make do,” which everyone around the world is
saying.

Also, we have some friends who are nurses, and I have some students whose mom’s
are nurses, so we’re very worried about them. There are women everywhere in
America sewing cotton face masks for hospitals. Maybe you’ve seen the calls for
face masks on Facebook. I’d love to stitch some up since I have sewing
skills, but my school work has my time pretty occupied. Maybe I can stitch
some up week after next, since we will be on spring break.

This enforced isolation is likely the best way to slow down the spread of the
plague, as much as it's a true PITA. I've only barely started doing anything
with my new camera other than testing and learning it since it got here… :(

Something worth mentioning: Don't pay (or take change!) in cash if you

Re: OT: Stay Home, Stay Safe, Stop the Spread

2020-03-24 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Yes, we all have to work together to beat this plague.

Aside from going to the grocery store for supplies twice, and stopping to get a
take-out lunch today at a nearby restaurant on my walk, and riding my bicycle
on "isolation exercise" rides, I've barely left the condo for eight days. I
haven't seen anyone other than my partner closer than about 6 feet away in that
time, other than to use Apple Pay to touch a machine at the grocery store I
don't touch anything.

There are a bunch of different rules of lock down in different places. And
there's no credible analysis of which of them are working to diminish the
problem and which aren't as yet. That takes more days and more sample analysis
than can have been done so far.

Many will die, have died, in all the places where I see reportage. Some places
are showing slowdown in the advancement of the infections, others are still
accelerating. I haven't seen much reportage from South America or Africa yet.
The body counts could be enormous; I just don't know.

And the blowhard in chief is talking about things as if it were already over
and done. 'We can do more than one thing! We can get back to work and save
everyone too! Enough of this being closed down! We'll come back strong! …' and
so forth. Fecking imbecile.

Keep working at it, follow sensible precautions until the situation is properly
addressed, ignore (and fire) the imbeciles. That's what we can do.

We don't have a lock-down but a ban on groups of more than two people
out on the streets.

Our DIY stores are also still open in order to give people living in the
same household something to do and keep them from going at each others'
throats. Various associations are already warning that domestic violence
will become a bigger problem than ever.

The city of Cologne's two recycling yards are run over by people
clearing out their basements and safe distances can no longer be
maintained there. They're now threatening to close them.

The café opposite is not allowed to serve people at its tables but may
sell its pastries and coffee for take-away. There's a cluster of people
standing in front eating, drinking and smoking although take-away food
and drinks must not be consumed within 40 metres of the point-of-sale.

We don't have any confinement. Christian democrat minister-president
Armin Laschet of North Rhine-Westphalia thinks there can't be any
further restrictions given that religious freedom is already restricted
since people can't attend mass. The guy used to be chief editor of the
episcopal newsletter in the town of Aachen and methinks he'd better
stayed there. To make things worse, he's thrown his hat into the ring to
become Merkel's successor.

Instead there's a ban on being together outside in groups of more than
two people who are not part of the same family or living under the same
roof. All others have to keep their distance.

All bars, pubs, restaurants (unless for take-away) and shops with the
exception of supermarkets, pharmacies, drugstores and DIY stores are
closed. The latter supposedly in order to keep people occupied while
they're staying at home. All schools and public places like museums,
sports grounds etc. are closed as well.

As a result, Cologne city centre is as calm as on Xmas day. No car
traffic, no noise, no exhaust fumes, no smells from the ventilation of
the numerous restaurant kitchens around us. No more stink from the curry
house behind our back yard when they let their bread scorch in the oven
yet again. Great if it weren't for the gruesome circumstances.

I haven't been out of the house for a week and a half and frankly I'm
not missing much except our weekly day of shopping and tourism in
Belgium on Fridays and of course our Easter holiday in Dunkirk, even
more so since we hadn't been able to go there over Xmas.

Other than that, we're fine. Let's hope all this will be over in the

Pretty much the advice here, although in the next hour or so I think they are
going to announce some very strict new rules in London as people are still
packing themselves into Tube trains, and lots being silly at the weekend by
congregating in numbers at popular beauty spots etc. Some people still take it
all very lightly, and it seems legislation will be needed to curb the flouters.

We've been pretty much at home for the duration, lucky to live on the edge of a
village so we can walk out the door and exercise up the lane. I've got to go to
Chatham in Kent tomorrow to help move my boat to a nearby marina ready for
lifting out on Wednesday onto a truck so she can be moved overland to Hayling
Island near Portsmouth - her new home.

The motorways are empty at the moment (relatively speaking!) so the trip will
be easy. Fueled up so no need to stop at all over the 2 hour drive, and only
seeing 2 people at the marina, the broker and a local skipper, and we'll all be
a fathom apart ;-)

OT: Stay Home, Stay Safe, Stop the Spread

2020-03-23 Thread Stanley Halpin
I’ve been pretty cautious about going out, about being in contact with others.
But today the governor of our state issued a strong Stay At Home order
effective through April 13. Still ok to go out for food and meds but otherwise
Stay Home.

I’ve decided there is nothing else I can do, and so will try to ignore what is
happening elsewhere and start putting together some Blurb books, catching up on
travels I have done over the last 7 years.

I do have a new camera arriving from Adorama tomorrow, a Ricoh WG-70, but I am
thinking I will not be anyplace to fully take advantage of its features…
