Re: PAW--Week 29

2011-07-26 Thread Larry Colen
Yes, congratulations.

I've got a Necchi that's older than you or I by a few years that works, I just
don't understand how to set all of the adjustments. My sister got grandma's
old treadle wheel singer.

I think that you'll like the iMac. I highly recommend a second monitor on it.
One of these days I hope to get a nice vertical second monitor for working on
photos with vertical composition.

I've made the mistake, as I add external drives, of not keeping track of what
is left as backups where on external drives, and am spending days using tidy-up
going through finding and clearing up excess duplicates. Do yourself a favor
and keep better track as you go along.

You should be able to just install lightroom off of your disk, it comes with
both PC and Mac versions, though it is well worth upgrading to LR3.

Congratulations on the enablement, Christine. I read ahead so I know

BTW, be sure and get yourself a largish external disk (a terabyte or

Hi Everyone:

Well, it hasn't been dull here. My 10 year old used sewing machine died, so we

looking around and couldn't believe some of the sale prices, and I had the
manager demonstrate the features on a top Singer model. He offered me an
incredible deal--and I mean incredible--so I left promising him I'd think about
it. Well, after getting the estimate for repairs, I decided to buy it, and we
bought the new machine on Thursday. It works like a dream. I made a blouse
today. The machine is such a joy to use!!!

Well, after bringing the sewing machine home on Thursday, I thought I'd check
email. That's when we discovered our 6-7 year old HP crashed. We called HP,
and they said it's just to old to fix.

So, Thursday night, we went to Best Buy just to look around--see what's out there. When
asked, I told the sales guys we were just looking, and I really meant it! We wondered
over the the Mac table, and, of course, we were asked if we needed any help. "No,
we're just looking," I said.

Then this really nice young sales guy comes up: "Need any help?"
"No, just looking," I said, while playing with the 21.5 inch all-in-one iMac.
Then Darrel starts talking to him, then I join in, then the next thing we know we're being offered
a deal we just couldn't walk away from--great, great deal. So, we're a Mac family now. My brother
is a Mac guy--"Finally" and "Congrats" was his response.

We've got it set up. Darrel's first question was, "Where are all the wires?"
I have lots to learn; I'm totally discombobulated-- I'm amazed iPhoto does RAW, and it's
editor reminds me of Lightroom a bit. I have to call Adobe tomorrow about Lightroom--I'm
hoping they'll let me upgrade to Ver. 3 at the upgrade price. There will be lots of data
transfer to learn too. Oh boy, can't wait!

All in all, we're really pleased with our purchases, but I do have
new-gadget-fatigue. The first shot, I think I actually took last week, but the

Congrats! You will love the iMac.

RE: your question about System 10.7 aka Lion, one of the Apple resources you
should explore is accessible through the Apple website:

Go to apple.com, click on Support, then click on Communities. Once there, you
can find ongoing and archived discussions about anything Apple, including how
to get an Epson R2880 to work under a given system version that didn't include
the proper drivers (to use an example from my own experience).

Or, use this link into the Lion discussions:
https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

I wouldn't worry too much about Lion itself being buggy, but things may have
changed that Epson, Adobe, etc. have not caught up with, and so print drivers,
etc. may not yet be ready for the new system.

The downside of waiting is that you will need to learn the current system and
its differences from Windows, and then turn right around and learn Lion. If it
were me, I would scan the referenced discussions, maybe search on Lightroom
and/or other programs of particular interest. If there are no reported
application glitches of interest to you, then go to 10.7 sooner rather than
later.

When I went Mac I got his "Missing Manual" book. I found it quite good and it
had a Windows-convert cheat sheet in the back in case you needed it. I
remember feeling a bit lost for the first week but since then it's been great.

Your photo makes a statement about the banality and sameness of our
urban/suburban existence. Is that Chicago, Atlanta, New York,
Toronto? Who knows? Who can tell? Who cares?

Sure, the photo's ugly (sorry, but it is), but I'm guessing that's the
point. At least that's the point for me as the viewer.

It certainly works.

Good to see you back on line, up and running. How about the sewing machine? ;-)

Shouldn't have any problem getting the upgrade to LR. Lightroom 3.4.1
works fine running in Mac OS X "Lion". I installed the system update
on Thursday and am quite pleased to see a number of nice improvements,
a fusion of UI concepts learned from iOS now incorporated into Mac OS
X, and some significant improvements in usability and performance in
many subtle ways. The new Mail application implementation is
excellent.

onwards!

Christine,

Finally, indeed! I know how it stinks when your sewing machine is
down. The last time that happened to me, it was a day before
Halloween & I was halfway finished with a polar fleece dragon costume
for my (then) four year-old. Talk about panic. :)

And congrats on the Mac. Those are very useful, too. We are in the
middle of moving our "office" space... things are functional, but we
are in the very unfinished, ugly stage -- what I wouldn't give for an
all-in-one, with no spaghetti/wire mess dangling everywhere. I'm
envious!

Wow, I'd say between you & Ann, you've got some serious shopping mojo
working in your favor... pass it on...

I always get the n.0 versions on disk, and they include the PC and Mac
versions, so I don't anticipate any problems for you, but you will need all
your serial numbers so that it recognises that the upgrade is on top of a
legit base.

Wow, they don't make 'em like they used to. Janet inherited an old Singer
machine that she thinks is about 50 years old. It was owned from new by her
grandmother. Still goes well but we don't use it very often. For a few
dollars we were able to download the user manual for it.

I think they can sense the challenge. Whenever I'm "just looking" I get
inundated by sales people. Whenever I'm ready to buy something there are none
to be found.

PAW--Week 29

2011-07-24 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Everyone:

Well, it hasn't been dull here. My 10 year old used sewing machine died, so we
took it in last Sunday. I'm out of touch with the latest models, so I started
looking around and couldn't believe some of the sale prices, and I had the
manager demonstrate the features on a top Singer model.

So, Thursday night, we went to Best Buy just to look around--see what's out
there. When asked, I told the sales guys we were just looking, and I really
meant it! We wondered over the the Mac table, and, of course, we were asked if
we needed any help. "No, we're just looking," I said.

Then this really nice young sales guy comes up: "Need any help?"
"No, just looking," I said, while playing with the 21.5 inch all-in-one iMac.
Then Darrel starts talking to him, then I join in, then the next thing we know
we're being offered a deal we just couldn't walk away from--great, great deal.
So, we're a Mac family now. My brother is a Mac guy--"Finally" and "Congrats"
was his response.

We've got it set up. Darrel's first question was, "Where are all the wires?"
I have lots to learn; I'm totally discombobulated-- I'm amazed iPhoto does
RAW, and it's editor reminds me of Lightroom a bit. I have to call Adobe
tomorrow about Lightroom--I'm hoping they'll let me upgrade to Ver. 3 at the
upgrade price. There will be lots of data transfer to learn too. Oh boy,
can't wait!

All in all, we're really pleased with our purchases, but I do have
new-gadget-fatigue. The first shot, I think I actually took last week, but the
other three I did take this week--so it's a legit paw-post. Nothing really
great--I have been a bit preoccupied as they say. Cheers, Christine
