Yup - the line is ",,, standin' on a corner..." not "standin' on *the* corner

I think the artist might be remembering the song "standing on the corner watching
all the girls go by" an
older song ...

Looks like they now have a statue of Jackson Brown (who wrote the song

permanently parked there as well.

2016-04-20 Thread Gonz
You got it! Its supposed to be a reflection on the "window" painted
there. She is supposed to be driving according to the song. So its
like you say, RHD vehicle (unlikely in AZ), or the artist simply did
it this way on purpose to be able to show the girl.

2016-04-20 Thread John

I don't think it's meant to be a reflection, but if it is, the girl is
sitting on the passenger's side of the vehicle, and there's no driver.

OTOH ... She could be driving from the passenger side or it could be a
RHD vehicle. The USPS used to specify you had to do one or have the
other if you wanted to get a contract for an RFD mail route.

... of which there'd be plenty around Winslow.

Yup - the line is ",,, standin' on a corner..." not "standin' on *the*
corner ...

I think the artist might be remembering the song "standing on the corner
watching all the girls go by" an
older song ...

Re: PDML: Where are you located? (Lurkers also welcome to reply.)

2016-04-19 Thread John

I was out in that part of the country in April 2005 when I was on
terminal leave after Iraq & saw the sign for the Winslow, AZ exit on
I-40. I figured "What the Hell!", I should give it a shot.

After I took that photo (using the self timer & running across the

turning left blocking me out.

After I took my photos I found out there was a "Standing on the corner

I'm more concerned about summers being too warm than winters being too
cold- and Boston isn't much different than NYC these days.
It has fine public transportation, a great center city, lots of culture
and easy access to lovely scenic rurual areas... and a bunch

of my friends :-)

When the outside temp gets above 60 it is time for shorts and a T-shirt.
The AC goes on if the apartment gets over 70.Good thing

I have rent control and can stay in this climate

Yeah but - where were you in OCtober 1989? for instance. I've felt
several quakes out west... and a couple of tiny ones here..

I love visiting California, but what has been going on their climate wise
recently is also something I'd have a hard time with..
In NYC I can fill up the bath tub twice a day and not do any damage
tothe environment ... I dont' own a house , and I live three flights up
in a neighborhood where the floods of Sandy only caused me a week of
power outage and it was easy to get to friends homes that

had light... in 50 years there have only been very minor weather problems.

But I COULD live in Toronto...

We make up for the taxes with high property costs.

But other than nice weather, four racetracks within a few hours
drive, the beach a few minutes away, skiing and Yosemite a few hours
away, an incredible music scene, and proximity to an amazing variety
of food in the Bay Area, several state parks within a half hour
drive, and being smack dab in the middle of one of the best wine
regions in the world, there aren't a lot of reasons to live here.

Portland OR, where hipsters go to retire, also has a lot to recommend

We make up for the taxes with high property costs.

But other than nice weather, four racetracks within a few hours drive, the
beach a few minutes away, skiing and Yosemite a few hours away, an
incredible music scene, and proximity to an amazing variety of food in the
Bay Area, several state parks within a half hour drive, and being smack
dab in the middle of one of the best wine regions in the world, there
aren't a lot of reasons to live here.

Portland OR, where hipsters go to retire, also has a lot to recommend it,
starting with Powell's City of books.

I think you folks should spend the summer touring the country, visiting
PDMLers and getting a better idea of what areas work for you.

Cost of living's a bit higher in Asheville, as it is down near the coast.

The Piedmont probably offers the best compromise between lower cost of
living and accessibility to both the mountains & the sea.

If I was looking to move to North Carolina from out of state, and was
not constrained by having to live where I had a job waiting, I'd take a
real close look at the area around Asheboro where the NC Zoo is located.

All the other good parts of living in North Carolina are relatively easy
to get to from there.

Spent a November week in the area just west of Apalachicola—and in Apalachicola

2016-04-14 Thread Paul Stenquist
Tell me about places that are affordable because they’re not within commuting
distance. I’m going to continue to work only from my home office. Is there such
a place our there among the mountains?

you I may know (or know approximately) but this thread would be a
handy way for people to just hit "reply" and provide their
region/city/country. One practical use: It might help all of us to
know where prospective meet-ups might be scheduled when traveling,
etc.

As you may know I'm in South-Central Nebraska U.S. - near Grand Island.
