The first was better. This one suffers from lack of DOF and what appears to
be drops on the lens in front (at the bottom, making me feel it might have
been taken in the rain). And, yes, I know I showed a photo I really liked with
shallow DOF in front and only focused in the middle. (But that only one other
really liked, everyone else was more bothered by the shallow DOF in front.)
But, for my liking, that was a mass of flowers -- when one can see and make
out individual flowers, I feel it is different.

In other words, my inconsistency has a basis. :-) Of some sort.

Hi Bruce,

the more typical bird closeup - putting the little winged creature into a
larger context than just a closeup on a branch seems to get me more
"involved" with the scene, somewhat akin to having been there as opposed to
just looking at a pic that should be in a book about bird identification.
The second (tighter cropped) version works best for me.

Doesn't do much for me, Bruce. I don't like the out-in-out focus

Very nice. But as to the DOF it seems you are sitting between two chairs.
The DOF is either too shallow (to get all flowers sharp) or to wide in order
to use the DOF for isolating / emphasising some of the flowers.

Hmm, doe not do that much for me.

There are two or three slightly different (purple ?) colored flowers
near the left side, had that been a single one and more prominent
or more saturated it might have made the composition stronger.

Allthough the image as it is now may do quite well printed large ...

The perspective or lack of perspective makes this semi abstract intriguing.

Original capture was done in very heavy fog without any filtration, Velvia
@50.
Using PS CS2, I brought out the trees somewhat as they were very faint, more
faint than I remembered, this is most likely where the grain. There is some
grain in the original capture but not as evident in the posted image. I also
dialed back some of the blue.

I've shot Velvia before in situations like this & have also noticed the
effect there. Probable an effect of under exposure.

I'm generally a sucker for this type of photo. The fog and layers
always intrigue me. So for that reason, I like this photo.

Excellent, Ken. I love the monotone effect. It works wonderfully here.

Good eye! Beautifully exposed. It is, however, very blue.(?)
A little additional symmetry might have helped it for me, but I "get
it" and like it.

Very, very nice! Was the image so blue even on film, or have you enhanced
the effect?
This is not to criticize it, as I like a lot the blue cast on that image.
Just out of curisity.

Much to like about this shot and the geometry/texture! I
might suggest cropping the relatively narrow layer at the
top. Even though it removes one ripple, I think it makes for
a stronger image by removing, to me at least, a distracting element.

I was doing a panorama photograph today. While I was waiting for
interesting light I saw this field.

Easy to armchair quarterback... If that last ripple were twice as thick I
would likely agree. A delightful shot though.

Hi Jens,

Much to like about this shot and the geometry/texture! I might suggest
cropping the relatively narrow layer at the top. Even though it removes one
ripple, I think it makes for a stronger image by removing, to me at least, a
distracting element.
