Re: Pentax Spotting

2022-01-08 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Asahi was a great company, that made superb glass and wonderful
state-of-the art cameras. IMHO, none of the corporate successors to the
Pentax brand have lived up to it.

For those who may not be aware of the name, "Asahi" is a popular brand name
in Japan, including Asahi Beer (which is wonderful) and Asahi Shimbun, one
of the major newspapers. It means morning sun (Asa+morning, Hi=sun or
fire, as in hibachi). It also however means "Rising Sun," as in the red
disc that appears on the Japanese flag and Japanese military aircraft. As
such, for years the company used other brands to sell their cameras in the
US, because of the ill will many WW II veterans and others felt for the
Rising Sun symbol. Thus, the Pentax was branded as a Honeywell when it
was initially imported to the US. A similar feeling led to Nissan cars
initially being marketed here as "Datsuns," to avoid the bad taste that
Nissan (another version of Nihon or Nippon, ie, Japan) still had for many
Americans.

Times certainly have changed.

RE: Pentax Spotting

I've told this story before: mine was an Asahi Pentax SV, bought for me by a
nurse travelling via Singapore while I was
living on St. Helena in 1968: the camera arrived about four months after she
left, due to there only being sea mail
service to the island!
It was stolen in 1975 in the East End of London, but I bought it's exact twin
in Adelaide about 15 years ago, and it
still works like new.

Re: OT: Pentax Spotting -- Welcome to Marwen

2019-01-03 Thread John

That's not my point.

A movie like the new Mary Poppins film got a multi-million dollar ad campaign
that began before they even started shooting. Welcome to Marwen didn't.

A film like Welcome to Marwen appeals to me more than the new Mary Poppins.

Not having kids or grand-kids may bias me, but that didn't stop me from enjoying
the Harry Potter books & then the films, but ...

Thing is I don't get *ALL* of my news from facebook, twitter et al and I like to
think my tastes are slightly more discerning. But if it hadn't been for "Pentax
Spotting", I probably wouldn't know about the film.

What are people who don't have my advantages going to know?

Re: OT: Pentax Spotting -- Welcome to Marwen

2019-01-01 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I thought "Welcome to Marwen" was outstanding.. One of the best this year. At
the showing I attended, about 80% of the nearly full house gave it a standing
ovation.

And yet the reviews I've seen thumb Marwen down in favor of that hideous,
soulless, scriptless, and dull-witted Mary Poppins remake. That was painful to
even sit through, and gets my vote as one of the worst films I've ever suffered
through.

Yes, Steve Carell often has an Asahi Pentax Spotmatic in his hands often in

rehab, becomes a photographer to create art that he can no longer do the

Definitely an Asahi PENTAX Spotmatic, fitted with a 50mm f/1.4 Super Takamar
(that's most obvious in the third brief appearance at 0:32 into the clip).
All told I spotted the camera on-screen in seven different shots.

It might have been. The way movies are made the scene could have been shot
at different times then stitched together. There are lots of times that
the continuity is a film is screwed up this way, (in fact it's fun to look
for them).

More Pentax spotting

2001-05-14 Thread Aaron Reynolds

So, Vanessa gave me the Beatles Anthology eight laserdisc set for my
birthday (those of you with laserdisc players and Beatlemania should be
advised that the set, previously priced in the neighborhood of $250, is
now $29.99 plus shipping brand new from several online laserdisc
retailers and is entirely worth the money). So, of course, I have about
fourteen hours of Beatle-watching to do. And what do I find by the
fourth hour? So far TWO references to the mighty Pentax!

The first, in discussing their first tour of the USA, Paul speaks of
wandering tourist-like around Miami, and taking lots of pictures with
our Pentax cameras. The accompanying footage, however, doesn't give us
a close look at what they're shooting with, except that the bodies are
black and they appear to have 50mm lenses on 'em. This would be in
1964. I seem to recall having a close look at the SLRs in their movie
Help! (from 65 or 66 IIRC) and finally deciding that they were Nikons,
but I don't remember what finally made my mind up about that...I know
that a reporter brandishes a Pentax of some kind in the earlier A Hard
Day's Night, and I'm pretty sure that when Ringo is wandering around
sadly by himself he has a Pentax, but again, I forget what I used to
make up my mind.

Anyhow, later in Anthology, they show some footage from a Beatles
appearance on a British TV show, and Ringo's drum riser has been made up
too look like an SLR, complete with lens, and across the prism is the
inscription Beatax.

Okay, I reread this message, and I've decided that I'm either obsessed
or just really a geek.

Pentax-spotting

2001-05-07 Thread Jörgen Blomgren

Hello Pentax-fans,

I could not help noticing a Pentax-user in the swedish nature-show
Mitt i naturen-Film there was a short (.5 hour) documentary
from and about the swedish nature-filmer and photographer
Mattias Klum. It described his reportage about asiatic lions in
India, and he used a couple of Z-1P's with at least two BIG
FA* lenses, as I am not used to seeing these lenses I can not
tell which ones, but I think I could spot a figure of 600 on the
side of one of the lenses.

The intresting part is that they mentioned that the next
issue of National Geographic (June?) will feature this reportage
in 16 pages ! The photographs in this must have been taken with
Pentaxes !

I do not care much if Pentax is a pro-camera, but it makes me
feel good seeing an *excellent* photographer using the brand
I choose.

The reason I mention this on the list, is because I think there
was a short discussion about Mattias Klum a while ago, if he
used Pentax or not.

PLEASE do not start a flame-war about brands, I do not want to
read 100 e-mails a day about the pros and cons of this and that
brand.

Best regards,
