Wow - I see who the night birds are here!
I went off to play Scrabble and found a bunch of "niceness" when I came
back here...

So thanks all of you for that...

I glommed onto this one to answer Jefferys question first

No one thought I was taking pictures of them, actually...
the man reading the paper was engrossed, the others were asleep, and
people in the station
walking around saw my delight in the lighting .. one guy said "it looks
like gold" about the
windows on top.

That being said, I generally don't get in people's faces... If what I
want are the people in the scene I
prentend I'm just shooting structure... I might click one off quickly
then put the camera down as if
they were in my way and I was waiting... or just keep the camera to my
face as they pass by.

I don't take photos of the unfortunate... and sometimes I literally
shoot from the hip-- er-- well
waist if I am going for street shots.

Sometimes I'm jsut out of their line of vision and frequently shoot
people only for scale or
passing by at right angles and some distance so they just think I'm
taking a photo of what

they are walking by.

was a nice day so..
I hopped on the light rail... THEN as I was shooting the Manhattan

After I shopped I found the walkway and went back to Hoboken to come

You have two options. One is to make yourself invisible, the other is to
make yourself unmissable. The worst thing to do in my opinion is to creep
around furtively trying to 'sneak' pictures, although sometimes it seems to
be the only way. In any case, confidence is everything. That plus a winning
smile. People are generally ok with it.

Even then, sometimes people can get a bit annoyed with you, and you just
have to learn to deal with it. This guy was a bit annoyed when I took his
picture, bit I was rather in his face, so I don't blame him:

Just so you know... that is the real color... (at least, what I'm seeing

in fact, I actually slightly desaturated it.

There are gilded panels near the ceiling and that, in combo with the

about once a month or sometimes more I go out to the Pavonia Newport

That was earlier in the afternoon... Hoboken and JErsey City are

shopping mall near where my stores are

it was a nice day so..
I hopped on the light rail... THEN as I was shooting the Manhattan

people walking along the river and damned if they weren't following a
real path that went between the two locations.

After I shopped I found the walkway and went back to Hoboken to come
back into NY . By now it is golden light time.

When I first moved to NY, I lived in a transient hotel on 35th street, just a
few doors off Broadway. My roommates were of the grey, furry variety. I used to
go to Macy's and hang, because it was a good 20 degrees warmer than my room. I
lived on chinese fast food and cheap pizza. Hunan chicken, fried rice and an
egg roll sold for less than five bucks at the joint on the corner of 35th and
Broadway.

Sounds like a place we stayed in south of the Loop in Chicago. We had a
contract to refinish some metal furniture for Michael Reese Hospital,
needed somewhere close to stay and got rooms at the New Michigan Hotel -
corner of Michigan and 22nd St. The New Michigan was originally the
Lexington, famous (or infamous) as being Al Capone's headquarters/home.
Room cost in 1965 - $3.00/night.

More info on the history of the Lexington here...

I ain't no perfect...

You also have to understand that the alternative is endless cartoons on
Nick or Cartoon Network or some such local equivalent... I'd rather
dream of cakes than of some bizarre characters drown up in some peculiar
manner.

Nice capture Ann... Not to detract from the capture but I am curious to know
what are people's reactions to you taking a picture they may appear to be
in. This goes for you and anyone on the list. I am thinking about going
downtown around 2nd avenue to some weekend and want to know what to expect
as far as people and being able to snap their picture.

Mostly they won't care, but occasionally you get some asshole who thinks
he can tell you you can't take a photograph of some public place because
he's occupying that public place at the current time.

I've seen many hundreds (thousands?) of yours, but this is one of the
best ever I've seen from you.

A stunning photo in every way. Composition, the light, the grouping
of three "down and outers" sleeping, the rather middle class looking
fellow separated from those three as he reads the paper, oblivious to
the others.

It's all too perfect. It looks as if it could have been staged (but I
know it hasn't).

One of the best I've ever seen here.

2011 Annual cover for sure.

Great, GREAT shot.

cheers,
frank

Stop already! wow, thanks Frank!
It wasnt submitted for 2011 book - took it after deadline or I would
have, I think... but I'll try to remember to submit it next year

I doubt if you have seen hundreds of my photos... unless you went
through all my files after I'd gone to bed when you crashed
here a couple of years ago. But then math has never been my strong

I was thinking for ~next~ year's book, which would be photos taken in
the year 2011.

As for how many photos of yours I've seen, well, I'm thinking I've
been on the list for about 11 years, you've been on longer, so for
sure I've seen hundreds of yours over that period of time. Surely
more than 20 a year, which makes over 200, right?

cheers,
frank

well actually, if you only had known me a year and looked at every image
on my web page;-)

anyway, glad you like the shot, kiddo.

I'll say that the goldenglow of the place and the structure of it is
what I fell in love with. Because of the brightness, while
I knew there were people on the benches I couldnt' see them clearly when
I was shooting.. except for the guy
in the collar reading the paper.. I'd have preferred it if the bench
was clear except for him though I understand that

would not be your choice.

BOB & ANN RE: Peso - Hoboken train station

2011-03-06 Thread Jeffery Johnson
I thank you both for your suggestions. When we went last Saturday to Mt.
Olivet Cemetery we ended up going downtown and turning onto 1st avenue.
Which we should have known it would be busy but I did not realize just how
many people were downtown. Being the Country Music capital there were and
are a lot of musicians on the different corners and a lot of different
tourists as well as locals hanging out around the stores and bars downtown.
It would be an interesting photo capturing trip to spend either the evening
or morning taking pictures. I will just have to figure out a good place to
park so it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to do so.

Jeffery

You have two options. One is to make yourself invisible, the other is to
make yourself unmissable. The worst thing to do in my opinion is to creep
around furtively trying to 'sneak' pictures, although sometimes it seems to
be the only way. In any case, confidence is everything. That plus a winning
smile. People are generally ok with it.

Even then, sometimes people can get a bit annoyed with you, and you just
have to learn to deal with it. This guy was a bit annoyed when I took his
picture, bit I was rather in his face, so I don't blame him:
