CORRECTION - PARIS BOOK PRICES - yikes! embarrasment! regret!

2019-09-20 Thread ann sanfedele
I've already contacted a couple of you  who not only ordered the book
but paid me for it - for the rest, here is what happened.
I was naive enough to believe that the book, which I can only get myself
for $44.50 (thats with a coupon yet) i.e. the base price for
the sales, was temporarily offered to me for $14.50.  Ok Looks like a
simple typo, right? the 4 is right near tie 1 etc.. but I called
and said, really? and customer sevice gal at Create Photo Calendars
assured me $14.50 was correct until October 1st.   base Canard.

SO I go to order ONE copy just to reassure myself the printing template
was correct before I orderered all teh books people ordered..
THEN ) I go to CHECKOUT and the discounted price came up $$44.50.   So I
called and same aldy scratches head and says, gee, let me check into that.

Finally I get to the higher-up guy who I knew over the last couple of
years, who was helpful and smart etc and, alas, he confirmed that there
was NO $14.50
price for a book that was more than 20 pages /There will be a staff
meeting about this/. says he. OF course, he said, he really couldn't
sell me the books for $14.50 each, too deep a discount by a lot and I
had to agree.  Given my financial status, I couldn't stick to the $25 I
offered to sell the book for.  If it had been a mistake that left me
with a cost price I would have let it go and been glad people who wanted
the book but also had pockets to thin to justify paying twice that got
to have it. Sigh.

The $14.50 price was sitting ther right under the thumbnail of my book
on my (access by me only) project list.  The "lifetime discount" prices
for all my
wall calendars are correct - because a 12 month calendar is the
-included- number of pages on all.  Phew.

If you still want the book and we haven't talked you can either buy it
on line directly from my "store" on creat photo calendars site or you can
send me $50 for the book and I'll give you free shipping to make up a
little for my not asking to speak to someone higher up at CPC earlier..

My calendar prices on the site itself are all $18 for the standard size
(8 1/2 x 11") and $22 for the 11x14, but landscape orientation. There
is one new calendar - Patterns in Nature - and 16 other older calendars
that those of you who are devoted to gathering my wall calendars

may or may not  have that originall were on CAFEPRESS.

NEWly added but previously published wall calendar is a selection of
photos from the Paris book.. all lanscape oriented and all in Paris

/per se.

PLease let me know if you want me to scratch your name off the list of
orders, (I won't be offended ) /or if you still would like THE FIRST
TIME I SAW PARIS
, signed and with free shipping .. but I need to know by Tuesday at the
latest...(9/24).

Here is the link to all things Ann Sanfedele books and calendars on cpc

https://www.createphotocalendars.com/Shop/annsanfedelecalendarsandbooks

If you are not getting the book and you want a calendar please just
order one from the store whenever...

If you are getting the book, I can include it in the shipment I get from
cpc with the books that I need to get to sign.

Your ditzy photographer,
ann

RE: Prices of the new Pentax body and lenses

2016-02-18 Thread John Coyle
VAT is added at each stage in the process, John, so that on import the
wholesaler pays the appropriate percentage (up to 25%, depending on the
country), and then each handler adds the same percentage to their sale price,
after allowing for the recovery of the VAT charged by the person before them in
the line. So at the end, if a thing costs $100 and is handled by three people
each adding 10% in value, the costs and prices (assuming a tax rate of 25%)
increase as follows:

Importer: Cost 100 plus notional VAT of 25, sell for 110 plus 27.50, pay 2.50
to the government (note he will already have paid 25.00 on import).
Wholesaler: Cost 110 plus actual VAT of 27.50, sell for 121 plus VAT of 30.25,
pay 2.75 to the government
Retailer: Cost 121 plus VAT of 30.25, sell for 133.10 plus VAT of 33.28, and
pay 3.03 to the government.

So the ticket price to the purchaser is 166.38, the retailer makes a profit of
12.10, the people actually importing and selling the item have made a gross
profit of 33.10 between them, and the government takes 33.28 on an item costing
100 on import! No wonder governments love this style of consumption tax...

I think the European retailer has to pay VAT on the wholesale cost & then
passes it along in the sales price.

(resending)

Jaume,
2k in Euro is about 2.2k in USD.
So, depending on the timing and your nearest airport, for the savings of 2.2k -
1.8k = $400 you might be able to have a day trip to NYC and back. :-)

Cheers,

Prices 12 years ago...

2016-02-15 Thread Bipin Gupta
My 1st SLR was the iconic Pentax K1000 SE + SMC M 50mm f2 Lens, circa
1978 (38 years ago) for $ 258 with case and a free Pentax SMC UV
Filter.
I bought it from Oldens of New York. The SE had a prism micro collar
with the split image center focus for fine focusing - Made in Japan.

I remember that cold snowy winter night as I took the underground from
New York to Jackson Heights - my precious K1000 tucked deep inside my
Snow Parka so that I would not get mugged.

I got some of the most awesome well exposed shots - at least 29
keepers from a 36 +1 film cassette - the +1 extra shot came from the
careful spooling of the paper lead - sometimes even +2 bonus shots.
Honestly I do not get so many keepers from today's Pentax DSLRs.

And the German Braun flash gave me 90% keepers - simple auto
Thyristor. You set the aperture on the camera as read off from the ISO
& distance scale on the flash. All you had to do now was to keep
firing away as you moved in or out from your subject. The flash's auto
eye would control the flash duration for those perfect shots.
What PTTL or ETTL ??

Regards.

From a letter I sent to my insurance agent in January 2004 outlining the cost
of items which had been stolen:

*ist-D $1499 + sales tax @ $119.62 = $1618.62

SMCP FA 31/1.8 AL Limited [Black version, special order from Japan]

OT - some sale prices for SD cards

2014-11-18 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Just in case someone is looking for some new SD cards:
Right now, Amazon has a deal sale (until midnight Pacific time) for
PNY SDHC/SDXC cards:
http://www.amazon.com/PNY-Elite-Performance-Speed-Class/dp/B00HIKBW1G/
E.g. 64 GB goes for $28, 32 GB for $15.

However, - I also found SD cards of the brand I haven't heard before (but
with overall mostly nice reviews on Amazon) - Komputer Bay:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008AN1C1A/
where comparable 64 GB card goes for $25.

.. but I expect that there might be more sales at the end of the month.

Prices crashing on Pentax-F 1.7x AF TC?

2013-10-16 Thread Darren Addy
Seem to be a LOT of Pentax-F 1.7x AF TCs on the market these days and
recently they have been selling for just $300 and under. Doesn't seem
that long ago when $350 for one was a Good Deal.

Makes me wonder if the replacement HD TC isn't about to hit the bricks
(and I wonder what it will be priced at?). Makes me think that if
someone had one they were THINKING about selling that it might be wise
to do it soon (or take the chance that with demand dropping as some
buyers opt for the new one that prices drop even further). Much
depends on the price of the new one, of course, and if it has all of
the same capabilities (or more).

Prices on K-5 and K-5 II

2013-06-05 Thread Larry Colen
I've got a friend who is looking to get a K-5, likely even a used one.
She asked me about K-5 vs K30 on facebook.
She is trying to snipe one on ebay.

While I can't justify going out and buying a new K-5 II, if I've got a
buyer lined up for my camera, and I can upgrade for not too much money,
I could be convinced.

Anybody know of any stellar deals on K-5 II bodies, or bodies with lenses?

Likewise, is anyone looking to sell a K-5 (or possibly another K-mount body)
for an exceptionally good price, that I could point her at?

A quick look on Amazon shows a couple of good deals by someone called

For sale (one day late, prices lowered): FA 20/2.8 and K-5 with Canon eeS focusing screen

2013-02-15 Thread Boris Liberman

Hi!

1. K-5:

I'm the second owner having bought it from a fellow from PentaxForums.
It comes with magnifying eye cap and that special Canon eeS focusing
screen that has been shimmed to correct position. The screen has no
marks whatsoever (except some dust and machining marks on the borders).
The focus pop is very good and I could use it with A 50/1.2. The problem
is that my eyes still tire too fast for me to make it comfortable. Also
this screen, unlike the stock one is more sensitive to the lens speed.
If you mostly shoot with kit lenses or slow lenses, I wouldn't recommend
you buy the camera, because the viewfinder will look rather dark.

Shutter count is approx 10K.

Cosmetically it is in very good shape with few exceptions:

1. I have applied the rear screen protective film having discovered that
the frames of my glasses scratches it. Nothing major but the rear screen
is not 100% clean of scratches. Looked at it few times - couldn't find
any dust beneath the screen though...

2. There is very minor bit of plastic (3 x 2 mm) that chipped off
approximate 1 cm to the left from the HDMI/PC AV/DC IN cover. I will
photograph it and provide the picture on demand.

I will include the original focusing screen. I will try to find the
original eyepiece. I may have no suitable camera strap for it but I will
look too. The original box is there.

Asking USD 625 which includes shipping and paypal fees. I will ship it
by EMS insured at full value.

Oh, and by the way the little plastic piece that covers the flash shoe
is in place :-).

2. FA 20/2.8. Recently it had a focus jam, that was fully repaired by
Pentax Israel. They replaced some parts in the mechanism and now it
operates as it used to - with slight change of resistance towards 0.4
mark on the focusing ring. I took few shots with it after the repairs
and AF is both fast and accurate. The repairs are covered by half a year
warranty by Pentax Israel. I am not certain if it can be claimed abroad.

Full review of this very lens is here:
http://www.pentaxforums.com/reviews/pentax-fa-20mm-f28/review.html

Asking USD 625 which also includes shipping and paypal fees. Shipping by
EMS insured at full value.

Please contact me off-list.

Thanks.

Derby, I have not heard it but I have read it is quieter than the K-5
without the slapping of the mirror. I'll let you know next week if
Amazon comes through on their shipping. Yes I am weak and have given in

It is gaining some adherents as a street camera as quiet & inconspicuous

Thanks Bong

That's a good point about the weather sealing.

The shutter actuates when it comes on? So when the camera is off or
asleep, the shutter is closed? Interesting, because the M4/3 cameras
leave the shutter open when it is off.

Hi Derby,

They're almost the same despite the fact that the only sound produced
by the K-01 is the aperture actuation since the shutter is open before
hand (make the sound of the shutter opening when you turn in on or
wake it up after it times out). With a WR (18-55) lens, the K-5 is
the quietest with the K-01 perhaps just a wee bit louder; with a DA L
35, the sound becomes louder for both with the K-01 being
distinctively noisier than the K-5. I suspect the WR seal dampens the
noise of the aperture actuation and the general weather sealing of the
K-5 also dampening the sound despite the fact it has a mirror and
shutter making a racket.

Re: FYI - Fiscal Cliff for K-01 prices

2012-11-14 Thread John Sessoms

Costco offers a K-30 "bundle" with a "BONUS" WG-1 Waterproof Camera.

Also an Optio WG-2 bundle.

Both on-line, haven't seen it in the local store.

From: Igor Roshchin

Oops.. Sorry, - it looks like it's an old news...
.. and a bunch of stores have had it at about those prices for
about 2 weeks (including Amazon, Walmart [black body only],
Pentaxwebstore.com, and even Bestbuy).

BTW, for those who are concerned about brick-and-mortar stores selling
Pentax equipment, - Bestbuy came close: it's a brick-and-mortar store
that sells Pentax equipment online (only).
But it's probably a good sign anyway...

Prices for K-01 are slashed at B&H and Adorama:
camera only, - $347, with 40mm lens - $447.

That must be what everybody is calling a "fiscal cliff"!

SR focal length setting only goes up to 800mm, If I recall correctly.

I really need to get off of TDC and learn about image stacking. For what it
is, the astrotracer is amazing. It seems to knock out about 90% of the star
movement, but that's not 100%

Another caveat, is that I am learning how important a good tripod head is. I'm
going to need to get a much better one before I do much more with astrotracer.

Accurately setting focus to infinity can be tougher than you would think. If
Jupiter is out, you can use live view and focus on Jupiter for that.

Damn. Went right out and bought one - online from Buy.com - $213 with tax, free
shipping.

Interesting to see if it will work in AstroTracker mode mounted on my Celestron
8" 2000mm SCM telescope, or my 1000mm, or my 500mm, or my 350mm. I suspect I'll
end up using the DA* 200mm as was used in those wonderful examples of what can
be done.

The advantages of using the big scope are the motor drive and scale ring to
move the unit a certain amount between groups of shots, and using the finder
scope to align the thing up on the same star every 2 exposures.

I'm moving this weekend, so nothing will be done in the near future. But I'll
have a nice deck and a concrete driveway to set up my heavy duty Celestron
tripod.

Thanks for pointing this out to me Darren.

Re: OT: Local 35mm Negative Scanning Prices

2012-05-30 Thread Mark C

Bummer, dude.

When it comes to developing traditional B&W - the beauty of it is that
there is no right or wrong way to do it. It is not an exercise in
conforming to a rule or a process, it is an exercise in understanding
how the film and developer interact and how your workflow (both
in-camera and in-the-lab) affects that. That's why the tech sheets all
talk about the recommended development times being the starting point
for determining your own process. My expericne with commercial labs is
that they just develop to standard times and leave it at that. Worst
case - they combine multiple rolls and average times. So we stick films
x y and z in the tank and their recommended development times in D76
1:1 are 10, 12, and 14 minutes. We'll do the whole lot at 12 minutes and
call it a day.

If you can't scan your own film I'd suggest using a chromogenic B&W -
basically C41 film. Let the lab develop it and scan it. There the
development process *is* an exercise in conforming to a rule, so you
should get consistent results. If your images are too faint or too
dense, you can attribute it to your exposure and not the processing.
Kodak 400CN or Ilford XP2 come to mind. You might want to confirm with
your lab that they can scan the Ilford without a color cast.

with the owner and bought all the chemicals. I mixed the D-76 and
Fixer last night in preparation of developing three rolls tonight. So
I called them this morning and asked what the price would be to scan
three rolls. This is the breakdown:

Prices for them to develop one roll of B&W and scan to disk.

$5.25 developing fee, $3.99 for the scan to CD = $9.24

Prices for them to scan my negatives, 36 frames.

69 cents per image, $3.99 for CD = $28.83

I asked why they were charging so much more for doing less work, and
the answer was, after consulting management, "We give a price break on
the scanning, if you develop your film here."

Needless to say, I won't be developing my negatives tonight.

Anyway, just a rant. Sorry it was so long. I know there are cheaper
scanning alternatives online. I really didn't want to purchase a

wouldn't take long for the scanner to pay for itself.

I was going to recommend checking with someone like Target, but I just
found out they're pulling the film processors from all their photo-labs
& won't do anything with film, not even scanning existing negatives to CD.

You might ask Ritz/Wolf Camera if you have one nearby. I'm pretty sure
they still process 35mm C-41 & the scanner is attached to the printer.
Also some Walgreens stores can still do film.

Re: OT: Local 35mm Negative Scanning Prices

2012-05-29 Thread P. J. Alling
Most local scanning services are outrageous. Look for a good used film
scanner. You'll pay for it very quickly at their prices. However
you'll also learn the joys of digital spotting in Photoshop, or some
other similar program. Black and white film by it's nature will not
allow Digital Ice, which is very good for dust and removal at scan time,
to work properly. I can recommend the Benq/Acer Scanwit 2720s and 2740s
scanners they work very well, for an moderately priced dedicated 35mm
film scanner. The biggest problem is that their film carriers are a bit
fragile, so you have to be careful using and buying used. True they
only scan at 2700 dpi, but they give a full 36 bits of color depth.
That's /only/ 9 mp but your local shop was most likely going to scan at
24 bits and 6mp. They are a bargain if you can find one. You'll
probably have to invest in a modern SCSI card as the one supplied only
has drivers up to Windows XP. Unless that's what you're using. The
only difference the 20s and 40s is the inclusion of digital Ice in the
latter. Not something you'll need if you're shooting Silver based B&W.
One more thing you should probably invest in is Vuescan to replace the
supplied MiraScan software which sux.

Their processor scans the film as it exits the dryer, writes the resultant data
to CD. Little or no followup accounting for exposure error. Their scanner is
calibrated to do the best with the images their machine provides.

Hi!

That is an unfortunate truth about scanning. You either buy your own
scanner or give up your own development.
Did you propose to your local lab to pay development "surcharge"? They
would save on chemicals...

OT: Local 35mm Negative Scanning Prices

2012-05-29 Thread Kenton Brede
So I decided a few weeks ago to give film a try. I bought a couple
old Pentax cameras and started shooting. Locally we have a camera
shop that will develop black and white film and scan to disk. So I
shot a few rolls and really liked the process of shooting a manual
film camera. So I thought I'd go a little deeper and start developing
the negatives and have the same shop scan them for me. So I worked
with the owner and bought all the chemicals.

I really didn't want to purchase a
scanner right away. I wanted to wait to make sure I was going to
stick with film, before buying a scanner. But at those prices it
wouldn't take long for the scanner to pay for itself.

I won't try to defend this price increase, as i don't know Pentax' cost
structure, but I would wager that their new Ricoh masters took a look at their
costs and P/L before deciding to make this move. If you look at Ricoh's
existing product prices you see that they price for a niche market, and Pentax
has been drifting in that direction for years.

That said, if you enjoy reading posters frothing at the mouth (pen?) and having
a hissy fit over this issue, take a gander at the Pentax DSLR Forum on DPR…

I must have missed that.

I'm sure glad I've already got the 16-50, 50-135 & 60-250;
Between them they now add up to around $2000 more than I paid.
They're nice glass, but I'd think hard before paying that much.

Only problem I've had is when I dropped my camera bag and the lens took the
brunt of impact. My fault. Had to get it serviced.

Otherwise, I love having this camera out when I'm walking in the rain. It sits
over my shoulders on TOP OF the camera bag, so I'm ready even if I'm in a
downpour. Effective and entertaining, especially when someone points to my bag
and says "uhm, sir? your camera's getting wet!" "Yes, I know".

BUT with that being said: I wouldn't pay $1500 for that. Even the approx $800
price was a bit much to swallow way back when.

The weather proofing is critical for me. The 16-50 on the K-5 is a nearly
perfect "daily driver" combination. It's fast enough for most lighting
situations, it covers the critical zoom range, and in most cases, it's sharp
enough that any difference in sharpness between it and a prime is moot, if it's
even noticeable. Being able to take my camera out and shoot no matter what the
weather, even if it's raining, or a dust storm, is crucial. I've gotten some
of my best photos because I didn't need to worry if my camera got wet.

I would love to have a DA* (weather sealing and quick shift focus) version of
the DA35 macro as a daily driver prime. That would be close to the perfect
lens for photo walks in the woods.

Last year's earthquake & tsunami along with other natural disasters in
Asia have affected the cost of production.

I know that when Thailand flooded last year hard-drive prices spiked. I

cheapest I could find that same drive was about $200.00. It's back down

Looks like prices have come down some since they're beginning to
recover. Maybe the same will happen with camera & lens prices.

Yikes. For a long time, one of the advantages of Pentax has been the

Agreed. I was having a hard time justifying the purchase at the old
price, due to the lens' uneven reputation. I can't imagine shelling
out at the new price.

The critical thing is that Ricoh/Pentax increase the build quality
(particularly on this specific lens!) so that it's worth the new price
point. Based on the problematic history reported here and elsewhere, I
wouldn't pay this amount of money for the DA*16-50/2.8 lens. I had
one, I sold it to a friend (and I wouldn't do that if I had any
reservations about the one I had), but I've seen reports from others
on everything from poor centering to failed focus motors, and mixed
reviews on warranty service for it too. That could ba a $1400 hassle.

I paid a similar price for a couple of the Olympus ZD lenses I've
owned. Comparing them to the new Pentax lenses I've owned, I could
easily see why they were worth the additional money: far superior
construction quality, flawless reliability. (I won't get into debates
about their optical performance.)

Right. So the question is: is that a good idea, given Pentax's
position in the market?

Probably a good idea given their cost structure...

Could be. But I note that the Nikon 17-55/2.8 at $1424.00 (B&H) isn't
weather sealed; the Canon 16-35/2.8 at 1699.00 *is* weather sealed but
costs almost $200 more than the Pentax and only goes to 35mm at the
long end.

At a certain point, Pentax has to price their lenses comparably to the
competition because a lot of people will assume that cheaper means
inferior and expensive = "better".

It's a good thing I love the old manual primes so much!

Though, I can't help but wonder how much pressure this will put on the
vintage glass market.

Groan.

The 16-50 has been on my wish list for a while... I guess I should
have bought it $700 ago.

I can understand incremental price increases, but almost double?
Yikes. For a long time, one of the advantages of Pentax has been the
value proposition... if that goes away, then what? Just as expensive
as Canikon, but quirkier, and with no FF option?

materials, cost of doing business, and the general economic climate.
Look at Canon's 5D III .. it's not *that* much more camera than the 5D

Buy less, use it more.

So, how 'bout them new lens prices?!?

I have been pretty impressed with what I've seen in the Ricoh era
(yes, I think the K-01 is a great idea) and therefore I've been
optimistic about the future. But these new lens prices seem, shall we
say, less than well-considered.

It certainly seems like a natural progression. I really do think the K20
is the perfect next step up for me -- just a wonderful camera that may
lack the performance of my K-x in terms of low-light performance, but I
hardly ever push the K-x in that regard anyway. And, if I ever need that
kind of performance, I'll have the K-x.

What the K20 would provide for me, I think, is access to features that
I'm going to need to know how to use if I'm ever going to be a
photographer in any serious sense of the word. I'm fascinated by what
I've read about the ergonomics of it, as well as certain specific
features like the focus-point selection mentioned earlier.

It just sounds to me like a wonderful camera, almost perfectly suited
for someone at my stage of learning the art, at a price that I would be
*insane* not to do everything within my power to meet. It just feels
like exactly what I need at this stage in my development, and something
that will serve me well for a good while.

Don't know. I never really figured out all of Nikons old system. I
bought lenses i knew would work, never looked at the older ones, maybe
one of the other Nikon folks here can tell you.

The D1 will work with AIS lenses? I've got some glass that I wish Icould play

No. Just lying ;-)
Seriously, "highest *market* prices" just means within the market
consisting of camera retailers looking to buy product which they can
re-sell at a profit. Don't expect anything to really change.

Have not tried to look at these recently, but i know in the past, i
have had little or no luck trying to access sold for prices, even with

Not sure if either the D1 or K-10 will sell locally. I have no lenses
