It's called vanity publishing because one usually does it in vain. But
hope springs eternal, doesn't it? ;-)

My local book shops don't want to stock anything without an ISBN: All
their inventory and sales tracking is done based on this number.

The most common reason is to get it sold on Amazon.com or other book

Oh wait, it's really International Standard Book Number. It's a number
you assign to a book that makes it part of the international catalogue
of published works. It's needed if you hope for any kind of
distribution but also helps your book show up in Internet searches,
etc. You'll find the ISBN of a book listed on its copyright page and
usually also on the back cover (in the form of a barcode).

G'day all

Getting a few pictures into print is always nice and I've just had four
images published in 'Australian Railway History' magazine, in an article
about the various methods used since 1877 to get trains up Lapstone
Hill, the start of the Blue Mountains escarpment west of Sydney.

If anyone's interested, these are they:

Why nepotism?

Ahem... my son Chris edits a sister publication ('Railway Digest') and
has a hand in laying out material for 'Australian Railway History'

(well, if you can't take advantage of family contacts, what good are
they? :-)> )

All photos more than worthy of publication, regardless of family
connection. I wouldn't worry about it!

Really like the bridge photos.

Oh yeah, congrats on the publication!

Thanks, Ken.

No - no reimbursements. 'Australian Railway History' is pretty much
produced on a shoestring so it relies on the goodwill of contributors
for its illustrations.

Yes - the viaduct is an impressive structure. There are similar ones on
other parts of the old railway line through the mountains but the
Lapstone one was the first, dating from 1867.

Yeah, we heard stories like that. The worst though
were the tales of raptors being shot for sport. The

violence.

Yes, I see how that would work, too.

A trick I was told to use for shots like this is to have someone control
the lights. Turn them off as soon as you trip the shutter so they won't
burn out the highlights, and extend the exposure time to compensate.

I had to photograph a room lit by an elaborate chandelier for a school
project and needed detail in the chandelier as well as in the room.

Sometimes it takes several attempts to get just the right balance.

Well the first day we passed through it wasn't raining -- that was
November 20th 1984 -
Then we went down to Furnace Creek . The next day it rained like crazy
and was still raining
when we drove back through the Junction after a visit to Scotty's
Castle... The post
storm sky was great.

I saw a documentary on The Opera House and Marta on PBS some years ago...

The first day wer were tehre there was a shaggy dog tied up to a palm
tree that I befriended -
but no person was to be seen... also, a long haired calico cat was
nicely posed in a window
and the Amaragosa hotel had a Closed sign under the Open All Year one.

I know that at a later time - another year - we drove through the
Junction and talked to the
people who were about to open th Amaragosa Hotel. But I can't remember
what year it was :-(

I know that driving down into the valley from the west was one of the
most white-knuckle moments
I've had in a passanger seat of a car.

Thanks for the updates - wish all your photos from taht article were on
lline

Re: Published!

2008-09-21 Thread Brendan MacRae
I think I messed with this one a bit in Aperture but
in the end I removed all the adjustments. What I
captured in this shot was certainly not what you would
see with your eyes as it was much more dimly lit and
mysterious. But, the place had a very warm feel to it
and I think this shot captures that. This is closer to
what you'd see once your eyes adapt to darkness, the
details just start to come out. I really only wanted
to show the fantastic murals and this was the best way
to go. I felt I didn't want to tweak it any further
and just left it how the camera saw it.

It was the one shot that jumped off the proof sheet
for the editor. He said, "That's a tough shot to get."
I wasn't, but I was glad he liked it all the same ;-]

Raining, wow. I would've bought a lottery ticket on
that day! It was only about 116 when we went through
Furnace Creek on the way to Death Valley Junction, and
that was back in the middle of May. My Dad drove with
me and was saying how he wanted to play the golf
course there even though temperatures of 130 aren't
uncommon during the summer. The man is insane.

Everything is still there. The hotel is still running
and Marta still does a show every Friday and Saturday
evening from October~May. She's 85 now and no longer
dances due to a bad knee but does what she calls, "The
sitting down show." Up until about 6-7 years ago she
was still dancing on point. What's incredible, as you
know since you've seen how isolated Amargosa is,
people flock to it from Pahrump, Nevada, 35 miles away
just to see her performances. The night we were there
the show was sold out which is the norm.

Re: Published!

2008-09-21 Thread ann sanfedele
Brendon - congrats!
Thats a beautiful shot...

I know that town -- the first time we went there it was raining! I mean
Death Valley, in the RAIN??
I shot the _outside_ of the Opera House only -- no one was around...
The first time we went through there
the Amaragosa hotel was closed -- another time it was just opening as a
B & B... is it still there? Never was
passing through when the Opera House was open...

Maybe I can find the mag somewhere here in NY _ I'd love to read the
article...

Big congrats, Brendan to you and your aunt. Go K10D :-). The shot you
posted is very nice--what a great room to shoot. Post the pics that got

It got published so it's just carping on my part to say the I'd like to
see a more "natural" color balance, increased Blue decreased Red. Still
it's a nice photo of a place I've always wanted to visit.

Published!

2008-09-20 Thread Brendan MacRae
It took a while but I finally got some shots published
in a local magazine, Sierra Heritage.
My aunt wrote the copy and I had six pictures printed
(seven if you count one for the index at the front).
All shots were taken with the K10D.

The story is really outside of the Sierra Nevada which
is the magazine's normal "beat." In fact, it's much
farther south, just on the eastern side of Death
Valley, CA. The story is on Marta Becket, an 85 year
old dancer and painter who has become world renowned
for her art and her quaint stage performances.

A favorite shot that appeared with the story was a 5
second exposure of the inside of the (dimly lit) Opera
House:

www.primelensphoto.com/IMGO8075.jpg

The printed version was cropped tighter to remove the
edge of the piano on the right, this is right out of
the camera.

Anyway, yea for me!

-Brendan

Re: PESO: Encierro (published, sort of)

2008-07-11 Thread Juan Buhler
Hi Bill,

First off, Jaume != Juan. Jaume's explanation is accurate, of course.

Second, I call Godwin on the gas chamber comment.

Third, I kind of, mostly, agree. A bullfight (and I have been to a
few) strikes me as a barbaric spectacle, the last remnant of a
tradition going back thousands of years. That, and the realization
that it is quite possible that this is something that will disappear
in my lifetime, is part of what attracts me to it.

Fourth: 48 bulls are sacrificed each year in Pamplona. The fighting
bull is bred just for that, and up until the last day, he's treated a
lot better than any other kind of cattle. If I had to choose, I think
I'd rather be a fighting bull than a cow raised in a feedlot for
macdonalds meat. What I'm trying to say is, yes, it seems cruel and
barbaric, but the burger joints of any American or Canadian city
probably go through a lot more animals than the ones killed during the
bullfighting fiestas of any town in Spain. And those are animals who
truly have had an unhappy existence, marked by cruelty, as opposed to
a good life ending in a bullfight.

So, I agree with you in principle and sentiment, but until we are all
vegetarians, which we could be, I'll keep coming to Pamplona. Then all
those animals would not even exist and we'll all be happy.
