RE: Bargain at KEH
KEH's BGN can be another dealers VG. Just means that something on it might not be pretty. But the optics are always pristine in the ones I've gotten from them. I bought a BGN K 200/2.5 from them several years ago. The retractable hood had some obvious dings in it but the glass was flawless. I just considered myself lucky to get one for $335 and used it for several years for concert shooting with the LX I had at the time. Also had them drop ship a BGN Sigma 21-35/3.5-4 to my hotel room in FLA once when I realized I needed a wide angle lens. Even though I was shooting with a ZX-5n at the time I figured that AF in the short focal lengths was something I could do without. all because I was getting their catalogs and I found these were on special because they had several. Never could figure out why they considered it BGN. Still have this one. I've bought two bargain items from KEH, and both worked perfectly and had only minor aesthetic flaws. Dan Timothy Sherburne wrote: Hello all... RE: Bargain at KEH
I have purchased quite a few lenses and a couple of cameras in 'bargain' condition. They have worked wonderfully and most importantly the optics were excellent. Cosmetically they were not gems, but as some can attest to here, I am not the easiest on my equipment so they would mot remain mint with me anyway. I have not purchased 'ugly' so I cannot comment. I don't think you can go wrong with 'bargain' at KEH. And with their excellent support you are never stuck with anything you don't like. I've always had great experiences, and I think all I have bought from them has been BGN. My MX, for example, still had the plastic in the botom plate. A couple of lenses (M135/3.5 and M100/2.8) were in near perfect condition. j -- --- Juan J. Re: Bargain at KEH
yep - check http://www.keh.com I have purchased several ugly or bargain parts from them, and found that they have some VERY picky criteria: not one would be classified as less than Excellent by my standards. Here's the trick for getting a good deal: 1) Identify item on web 2) Phone them! 3) Ask the salesperson to physically check out the item, and give their opinion on the item. Lead them with what you are after (ie : does the lens look clear, are there white speckles in the edges, scratches, etc). 4) wait for your package and be vindicated! I have found them very good at responding to this method... If they cannot identify the item from stock straight away, ask them to reserve it until it can be located and checked. They will call back once found! Re: Bargain at KEH
I have bought a few bargain items at Keh, including a couple of lenses and an LX finder, and have always been pleased. Also, keep your eye out for lenses with EX ratings but lower prices because they're identified as having a dented filter ring -- this denting can be relatively slight and innocuous, as it was with the otherwise perfect FA 100 2.8 macro I bought there a while back. I bought one lens rated ugly [a Kiron 105 macro]. It had slight fungus [which Keh's ugly rating permits] and promptly went back. I'd buy a Keh bargain item with confidence [particularly knowing I can return it losing only the cost of shipping] but probably would not buy a Keh ugly lens again. It is not ultra-fast, but it has good optics and is very compact. j -- --- Juan J. I've only bought one BGN item from them, but it was great. It was an SMC 400/5.6 with caps and case. The only problems with it were a little brassing on the (apparently aluminum) aperture ring and some scuffs on the case. Personally, I look for BGN items first on their web site. :-) I'm a user, not a collector. TTYL, DougF - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List.
