Well, bugger me dead, I just went to the newsagents, and look what I found!! I hope that means something different on your side of the globe :-) http://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/ Front page, full colour, that is my freakin' photo!! Well, that certainly puts the only photo I ever had published into perspective (half way through the local rag, BW, size of a big car sales advert). Well done! Now get some cash out of them. Malcolm

The Newspaper deadline I was talking about? I got a front page I got home from Brisbane at midnight on Sunday night - there was a message waiting for me from some Mining Union guy, asking if I could attend a picket line and industrial dispute the following morning (yesterday). I was to photograph four miners that got their jobs back after being retrenched and going through a huge court battle with one of the biggest mining companies in Australia. So, I took some shots, got paid 100 bucks, burnt them to cd, came home and took the kids to school. During the day I got phone calls from 3 separate newspapers looking for my pics. So, I happily emailed them off, not asking for any $$ as I had already been paid by the Mining Union and it was only like 15 minutes work. It would have been unethical to have been paid twice for the same job. I said as long as I got photo credit then I'd be happy for them to use it... LOL - yeah John- gotta post about it yet! And I sent everything off yesterday to be repaired and only remembered AFTER the fact that I hadn't taken any pics of it in all it's little pieces! Anyway thanks heaps for the kind words! tan. That's terrific Tanja, well done - particularly after such a long hard week-end! John Coyle Brisbane, Australia
Re: Freakin' heck...!!!
if they contacted you separately, you are to bill them separately after the fact and they are obliged to pay you. if they had contacted the original paper, then you wouldn't expect to be paid. sending the bill today to the three papers is in line. you're running a news stock business now and every time you give away an image, you are taking a calculated risk that more people will expect handouts. So, I happily emailed them off, not asking for any $$ as I had already been paid by the Mining Union and it was only like 15 minutes work. It would have been unethical to have been paid twice for the same job. Um, no, it wouldn't. You're not selling the picture outright, like if it was one single piece of canvas in a frame that only one person could possess at a time; nor are these newspapers paying you for doing the job; they're paying you because to use something that belongs to you. I understand it's difficult to be a hard-nosed business person when dealing with regular individuals off the street who may look like they're just getting by, or with family members and friends of family members when you don't want to damage relationships, but newspapers are accustomed to paying to use photos; they usually have their rates set by their own hard-nosed business experts, so if they say We'd like your photo the correct response is a completely business-like, By what time, and what do you pay? RE: Freakin' heck...!!!
Congrats, Tan!! I've only read a few responses so far, but as far as it being unethical to charge twice for the same pic, you of course know that's not true. Is it ethical for the newspapers to splash your photo on the front page (hell, they must have thought it was a newsworthy shot!) and not pay for that photo? I give my stuff away all the time. But I'm not a professional. This is your living. You have to charge for it. Lecture over. He's right. I run two newspapers, and I don't for pay anything unless I absolutely can't get it any other way - and that does include wheedling it out of those who are anxious to have a photo in print. They give me a nearly nonexistent stringer budget, so you can imagine I've gotten pretty good at it. LOL! Thanks for the heads up Treena! And thanks to everyone else for your kind words of congratulations and advise. I am GETTING there re: the money thing and charging etc, so I am duly noting it all down in the great big notepad in my head! Don't forget I am only just getting used to the concept of charging for my time etc, so this is another big step for me! Well, an update folks, - got me another front page this morning. This our a regional newspaper, covers a distance of around 600sqkms. I think the readership is around 500,000 or maybe a little more. I am a regular contributor to this paper though and have had front pages with them before. I'll scan the page a little later on and post it cause they don't have a website for today's issue up yet But first, I gotta get me some sleeep... (just got back from dropping the kids at school - I have been awake now for around 32 hours! *eek*. tan. -Original Message- From: Treena [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, 3 March 2004 9:24 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Freakin' heck...!!! As to getting paid twice for the same job... well, you probably know what I'm going to say. :) That's the principle that behind stock photography, and there's nothing unethical about it. And the time frame has nothing to do with pricing. If a specialist can fix my car in 15 minutes, or if it only takes my doctor 15 minutes to remove my wisdom teeth, they're not going to give me cut rates. The customer pays for the years of training, practise and experience that the photographer has, as well as the price of purchasing and maintaining her equipment, work space, etc. It may take my doctor 15 minutes to operate on me, but it would take me over a decade of school to aquire the skills he has. You pay for that knowledge, not the time needed to exercise it. chris
