Re: MACRO shot with Tokina AT-X 90mm F2.5 PKA Manual Focus
Interesting. He mentions the Vivitar Series 1, 90/2.5 and says it’s heavier. It is indeed because it’s all metal and built like a tank. He also fails to mention that the Vivitar came with an optical converter that makes it 1:1. I was heartbroken because I thought workers had stolen my pristine copy, but I’m happy to report that I found hiding at the rear of a shelf just the other day. Re: macro lens
I considered getting one of those but after thinking it over decided not to - I can't see what niche it would fill. The infinity to 2:1 sounds ideal for a field macro lens where you might want ot quickly work different subjects at widely different levels of magnification. But to me that is offset bu the lens not being A compatible which not only hinders the ability to meter quickly but also limits any auto modes and use of TTL flash. Plus, 60mm is not ideal IMO for field macro work. In the studio the stop down metering / manual flash would not be an issue and the 2x magnification would probably be more useful, but then its really easy to get high magnifications in the studio from standard lenses or enlarger lenses or whatever. The ability to focus to 2x would be great, but there is less need for infinity focus (unless you have a really big studio). As cool as the lens sounds I could not see how I could really take advantage of the inifinty to 2x feature. The final coffin nail for me is that I already have a DFA 50mm f2.8 which is an excellent lens. It might be a somewhat different story if I did not already have that (and a few other really excellent 50mm lenses). PESO - Crane Fly (Extreme Macro) & Question Re Macro Focusing Rails
http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/extreme-macro-crane-fly Another test run with extreme macro - this one is a dessicated crane fly that who's remains I found on a windowsill this afternoon. This was taken with an Otamat 20mm f1.7 on extension for roughly 4.5x lifesized. 48 images stacked. Question re macro focusing rails: I'm using a set of Pentax Macro Focusing Rails III, like these: http://www.pentaxforums.com/accessoryreviews/pentax-macro-focus-rail-iii.html The only difference being that the rails I own have the focusing knob on the right, not the left. I snap a 2 inch spring clamp onto the focusing knob and that acts as a lever, and gives me pretty good focusing accuracy. But, there is still a small bit of play in the rails that is a problem at high magnifications. Any recommendations regarding good solid macro focusing rails that operate smoothly? I've been considering some Velbon Macro Slider rails but it's not clear that they would be better than the ones I have, and it does not look like I could snap clamps on the knobs to get the leveraging effect - the Velbon rails have two sets of knobs that are very close together, hard to tell from photos how much working room there is. The two inch lever provided by the spring clamps that really makes a huge difference. Here's a (poor) photo showing how I am using that with the Pentax Macro Rails III: http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/2014/12/09/spring-clamp-as-lever-on-macro-focusing?blog=9 A little pressure on the end of the clamp / lever allows for very fine adjustment of the rails, undermined only by some of the looseness in the rails themselves. Twisting the knob without the lever does not allow for very fine control. Any thoughts or recommendations regarding macro focusing rails? Re: Macro Lens Comparison: Tamron 90/2.5 vs Pentax-M 100/4
Yes I had one of those. Removing the front element is a one minute job. The front element is a two part lens element. They painted the edge black to prevent reflections, the black paint comes off while cleaning the lens. The back side is very difficult to clean, the paint ruined the coating. Quoting Collin Brendemuehl : http://evangelicalperspective.blogspot.com/2012/10/macro-lens-comparision-ta mron-9025-v.html I have the 49 mm version of the Tamron - had it for decades and it's great with one exception, as mentioned in this thread of a few months ago: http://pdml.net/pipermail/pdml_pdml.net/2012-March/308059.html As Darren pointed out, the 'centre spot' problem is a known issue, which (thankfully) only manifests itself under certain lighting conditions. I had been using the lens for over 20 years without ever noticing the problem previously (or since). I've just found the AF version of the lens at a good price which should arrive in a day or two. Unlike the manual focus version, the AF version goes to 1:1. I'm looking forward to trying it out. -- Cheers Brian ++ Brian Walters Western Sydney Australia http://lyons-ryan.org/southernlight/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

there are two versions of the tamron. one with 49mm filter thread and a later version with a 55mm filter thread. which one did you test? I think they are the same optically so it probably doesnt matter much other than build quality, the 49mm version one is superior to the 55mm version. - J.C.O'Connell hifis...@gate.net - -Original Message- From: PDML [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Collin Brendemuehl Sent: Saturday, October 06, 2012 4:49 PM To: pdml@pdml.net Subject: Re: Macro Lens Comparison: Tamron 90/2.5 vs Pentax-M 100/4 >Is that the Pentax M-100/4 macro you are testing? >You know there are A-100/4 macros & A-100/2.8 macros (my favorite). >Regards, Bob S. Sincerely, Collin Brendemuehl "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose" -- Jim Elliott The 18-55 is not too bad for close focusing, so it sounds like you need to get into a dedicated macro lens. I'd look at a 90 - 100 ish macro lens - Pentax (of course) is excellent but there are a lot of good offerings from the 3rd parties. I've heard good things about Tamrons, Vivitar S1, Sigma EX, etc. I have a Kiron 105 that is great and a Pentax D-FA that is also excellent. For macro work in the studio I prefer a longer focal length in order to get a bit more working room. If you get into serious magnification you don't have much room between a shorter lens and the subject, and that can make it difficult to get the lighting exactly as you want it. Evenwith a 100mm lens, you can wind up with only a few inches of working room. Re: Macro recommendation
I like a slightly longer macro -- a 90 or 100 at least-- because camera and lens are less likely to get in the way of your light. I use a Vivitar Series 1 90/2.5, first version. It will do 1:2 on its own or 1:1 with its supplied optical adapter. I found mine for a bit more than $100, but they usually sell for a bit more than that. You may be surprised by the macro on the little Pentax-F 35-70mm, which you may already have, and if you don't you may find one in a ditch on the way home. Very common, very inexpensive, very under-rated IMHO. If you need to get closer than that, the Takumar 50mm f4 (or one of it's later incarnations) would probably fit the bill nicely - goes to 1:2. Or, if work is paying for it, tell them nothing but the Vivitar Series 1 90mm f2.5 Macro will do. : ) Darren Addy Kearney, Nebraska -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Macro bellows: fifty bucks!
Flat field of focus to be exact, which is a common design feature of macro lenses, not specific to bellows macros. What's unique about bellows macros is that they are short barrel lenses and require a bellows to hit infinity in most configurations. Pentax made one, Nikon made a couple and Olympus made about 4, including a 20mm f2. -Adam On Fri, Jun 4, 2010 at 1:31 PM, Ken Waller wrote: > What you really want is a lens optimized to have a flat depth of field. > Pentax made one - a 100mm for a screw mount. > > Kenneth Waller > http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/kennethwaller > > - Original Message - From: "J.C. With a bellows you don't need a macro lens. A basic bellows like that one without aperture transmission is nothing more than an adjustable length extension tube but heavier. The helix drive Pentax ones are great but hard to come by. Alternatively, I still have two Novoflex bellows with aperture transmission for sale that I was too lazy to put up on eBay. RE: Macro lens recommendation needed.
Having asked the question and read the replies carefully, I've come to the conclusion that the DFA100mm f2.8 WR macro is the one I want. It is also one that far exceeds my current budget, so I have started to save for it. In the meantime, I've acquired some close up lenses, which have solved the immediate problem but are really not in any way a long term solution. Thanks again. Just to clarify for those looking for the older Tamron 90mm f2.5 macro, it was available in 52B and a newer 52BB model (both sharing same optics). I have the 52B and think it would be a terrific lens at any price and is terrifically terrific for the money. The only negative is that (just like the legendary Bokina (Vivitar Series 1 90mm f2.5 Macro), which is Tokina made) you need an extension tube or matching teleconverter to get beyond 1:2. It is likewise capable of 1:1 using the optical adapter that came with it. It's somewhat of a cult classic, so it can be pricey, but I've found them for less than $200. - Original Message - From: "John Sessoms" Subject: Re: Macro lens recommendation needed. I expect that this is where a focus limiter would be useful. I just had a look at my A100/2.8 Macro (which is a lens I would not reccomend to anyone with a DSLR). Is there any reason for that other than the long focus throw? The A100/2.8 Macro is somewhat prone to picking up reflections off the sensor and sending them back as image forming light. It's a great lens in every other respect, so it is kind of annoying. But when you are hanging in a precarious position using one hand to stop you from falling into the ocean and the other to hold the camera to your face, it tends to be quiet useful. Anything beyond 1:1 is manual focus only - in fact I use a set of bellows and Olympus lenses that gets me from about 1/4 life size to 16 time life size (though above 10 times it's getting a bit soft). I don't take it out in the field very often though. -- Leon -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

You need to try the FA 100mm f/2.8 macro. 270 degrees gets you from infinity to 1:1. With the focus limiter on it stops after about 45 degrees (about 2ft. focus distance). The gearing from the AF screw to the barrel doesn't seem to be any different to any other lens and as a result it's the quickest AF lens I have. It takes quite a while if you feel the need to AF from infinity towards 1:1 magnification. In other words - the AF is a bit lame, prone to hunting and fairly noisy. However, macro users often prefer manual focusing anyway and for mainstream applications you can take advantage of the focus limiter. When restricting the AF to a range between 0.6m-infinity the AF speed is actually very fast and leaves nothing to be desired here." The Tamron limiter restricts focus to 1.5m - Infinity, the AF speed is fast enough to capture moving subjects. RE: Macro lens recommendation needed.
I use a A50/2.8 for my product photos to good extent and with great performance. I also have the F100m/2.8 but it often too long for the job. -- J.C.
