It's in K mount with a K-to-MFT adapter. Works very well. Bought a long metal

Good job JC. I have this lens and use it with an Olympus Pen F.
Extremely versatile on a half-frame MFT camera with 5-axis

Although my sample photo doesnt show it, the lens is known for excellent
bokeh.

It and the vivitar series 1 version both go by the nickname "Bokina".

Interesting. He mentions the Vivitar Series 1, 90/2.5 and says it’s heavier. It
is indeed because it’s all metal and built like a tank. He also fails to
mention that the Vivitar came with an optical converter that makes it 1:1. I
was heartbroken because I thought workers had stolen my pristine copy, but I’m
happy to report that I found hiding at the rear of a shelf just the other day.

Re: macro lens

I considered getting one of those but after thinking it over decided not
to - I can't see what niche it would fill.

The infinity to 2:1 sounds ideal for a field macro lens where you might
want ot quickly work different subjects at widely different levels of
magnification. But to me that is offset bu the lens not being A
compatible which not only hinders the ability to meter quickly but also
limits any auto modes and use of TTL flash. Plus, 60mm is not ideal IMO
for field macro work.

In the studio the stop down metering / manual flash would not be an
issue and the 2x magnification would probably be more useful, but then
its really easy to get high magnifications in the studio from standard
lenses or enlarger lenses or whatever. The ability to focus to 2x would
be great, but there is less need for infinity focus (unless you have a
really big studio).

As cool as the lens sounds I could not see how I could really take
advantage of the inifinty to 2x feature.

The final coffin nail for me is that I already have a DFA 50mm f2.8
which is an excellent lens. It might be a somewhat different story if I
did not already have that (and a few other really excellent 50mm lenses).

See how google can change your life? Its in stock at B&H. They would
either ship you the lens or refund your money if that is in error. The
people waiting were likely preorders or early adopters and I would
imagine that demand is vastly outstripping their production. There may
be a waiting list for some people. Its currently on backorder at
Adorama for instance.

PESO - Crane Fly (Extreme Macro) & Question Re Macro Focusing Rails

2014-12-09 Thread Mark C

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/extreme-macro-crane-fly

Another test run with extreme macro - this one is a dessicated crane fly
that who's remains I found on a windowsill this afternoon. This was
taken with an Otamat 20mm f1.7 on extension for roughly 4.5x lifesized.
48 images stacked.

Question re macro focusing rails: I'm using a set of Pentax Macro
Focusing Rails III, like these:

http://www.pentaxforums.com/accessoryreviews/pentax-macro-focus-rail-iii.html

The only difference being that the rails I own have the focusing knob on
the right, not the left. I snap a 2 inch spring clamp onto the focusing
knob and that acts as a lever, and gives me pretty good focusing
accuracy. But, there is still a small bit of play in the rails that is a
problem at high magnifications. Any recommendations regarding good solid
macro focusing rails that operate smoothly? I've been considering some
Velbon Macro Slider rails but it's not clear that they would be better
than the ones I have, and it does not look like I could snap clamps on
the knobs to get the leveraging effect - the Velbon rails have two sets
of knobs that are very close together, hard to tell from photos how much
working room there is. The two inch lever provided by the spring clamps
that really makes a huge difference. Here's a (poor) photo showing how
I am using that with the Pentax Macro Rails III:

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/2014/12/09/spring-clamp-as-lever-on-macro-focusing?blog=9

A little pressure on the end of the clamp / lever allows for very fine
adjustment of the rails, undermined only by some of the looseness in the
rails themselves. Twisting the knob without the lever does not allow for
very fine control.

Any thoughts or recommendations regarding macro focusing rails? For now
- I am not interested in the several-hundred-dollar auto stepping rails,
but good quality manual rails would be great

Re: Macro Lens Comparison: Tamron 90/2.5 vs Pentax-M 100/4

2012-10-07 Thread Toine
Yes I had one of those. Removing the front element is a one minute
job. The front element is a two part lens element. They painted the
edge black to prevent reflections, the black paint comes off while
cleaning the lens. The back side is very difficult to clean, the paint
ruined the coating.

I have the 49 mm version of the Tamron - had it for decades and it's
great with one exception, as mentioned in this thread of a few months
ago:

http://pdml.net/pipermail/pdml_pdml.net/2012-March/308059.html

As Darren pointed out, the 'centre spot' problem is a known issue,
which (thankfully) only manifests itself under certain lighting
conditions. I had been using the lens for over 20 years without ever
noticing the problem previously (or since).

I've just found the AF version of the lens at a good price which
should arrive in a day or two. Unlike the manual focus version, the AF
version goes to 1:1. I'm looking forward to trying it out.

there are two versions of the tamron. one with 49mm filter thread and a
later version with a 55mm filter thread. which one did you test? I think
they are the same optically so it probably doesnt matter much other than
build quality, the 49mm version one is superior to the 55mm version.

Colin, *both* shots have a quite distinct greenish cast. Are you
shooting a grey card and doing WB correction? The simplest, fastest
and cheapest solution.

The 50/2.8 wins that shootout hands-down. Nice detail! Not just your
little black spots, but the entire image is clearer.

At what aperture were these shot?

The A200/4 is a nice enough lens, but not really a macro.
Minimum focusing distance is 1.9 meters. (see Boz's site below)

I forgot to mention I preferred the early version with
49mm filter threads due to better build quality. It's built like
a precision tank. The later version with 55mm threads is more
"plastic feeling" and lighter.

I'd go with the A 50 f2.8. You don't specify which of the 28-80 lenses
you have and none of them were particularly macro. Most only focus
close enough to give a 1:4 magnification. The 50 is designed to be at
it's best at close focusing distances, the zooms are most likely not..

I think that this may be one of the most overlooked Pentax lenses. I
think most people see 35-70mm and think of the f3.5-4.5.
The constant aperture f4 is a whole 'nuther animal.

focus ring from infinity all the way to maximum macro without having to

Except of course for the Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro which by many

Except of course for the Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro which by many
accounts is quite exceptional though relatively costly.

I know of a good sleeper for macro. Its the A35-70/4 zoom ( not to be

at 70mm which is a good focal length on aps digital. Sharp, contrasty,
and nearly zero geometric distortion. And at 70mm there are virtually
no other lenses out there in macro range.

The 18-55 is not too bad for close focusing, so it sounds like you need
to get into a dedicated macro lens.

I'd look at a 90 - 100 ish macro lens - Pentax (of course) is excellent
but there are a lot of good offerings from the 3rd parties. I've heard
good things about Tamrons, Vivitar S1, Sigma EX, etc. I have a Kiron 105
that is great and a Pentax D-FA that is also excellent.

For macro work in the studio I prefer a longer focal length in order to
get a bit more working room. If you get into serious magnification you
don't have much room between a shorter lens and the subject, and that
can make it difficult to get the lighting exactly as you want it.
Evenwith a 100mm lens, you can wind up with only a few inches of working
room.

I like a slightly longer macro -- a 90 or 100 at least-- because camera and
lens are less likely to get in the way of your light. I use a Vivitar Series 1
90/2.5, first version. It will do 1:2 on its own or 1:1 with its supplied
optical adapter. I found mine for a bit more than $100, but they usually sell
for a bit more than that.

The A50/2.8 macro is a superb lens and well priced, the close working
distance will not scare away your subjects nor make lighting
problematic. If you are managing with the 18-55 then the A50/2.8 is
probably a good option, I have used it extensively for the same style
of photography that you are engaged in.

You may be surprised by the macro on the little Pentax-F 35-70mm,
which you may already have, and if you don't you may find one in a
ditch on the way home. Very common, very inexpensive, very under-rated
IMHO.

If you need to get closer than that, the Takumar 50mm f4 (or one of
it's later incarnations) would probably fit the bill nicely - goes to
1:2.

Or, if work is paying for it, tell them nothing but the Vivitar Series
1 90mm f2.5 Macro will do.

using a "regular" 50mm might work, but not as well

low cost but high performance solution is to use a enlarging lens via

I haven't tried that particular one, but I've used bellows before.

Flat field of focus to be exact, which is a common design feature of
macro lenses, not specific to bellows macros. What's unique about
bellows macros is that they are short barrel lenses and require a
bellows to hit infinity in most configurations.

Pentax made one, Nikon made a couple and Olympus made about 4,
including a 20mm f2.

What you really want is a lens optimized to have a flat depth of field.
Pentax made one - a 100mm for a screw mount.

Macro lenses are better for this use as JCO notes, and enlarging
lenses are also good choices, but you can use non-macro lenses too.

Having asked the question and read the replies carefully, I've come to the
conclusion that the DFA100mm f2.8 WR macro is the one I want. It is also one

Just to clarify for those looking for the older Tamron 90mm f2.5
macro, it was available in 52B and a newer 52BB model (both sharing
same optics). I have the 52B and think it would be a terrific lens at
any price and is terrifically terrific for the money. The only
negative is that (just like the legendary Bokina (Vivitar Series 1
90mm f2.5 Macro), which is Tokina made) you need an extension tube or
matching teleconverter to get beyond 1:2.

The first version of the 90/2.5 Vivitar Series 1 is a superb macro lens. It is
likewise capable of 1:1 using the optical adapter that came with it. It's
somewhat of a cult classic, so it can be pricey, but I've found them for less
than $200. It's also a very substantial metal lens and quite heavy.

It does the V125 has a three part telescoping mech, sounds inherently
unstable but it's solid as a rock and focusing is actually easier at
normal focus distances as the range isn't compressed as it is in the
macro lenses with short focus throw.

Yeah it's a great lens though the CA can be tricky at times and it
doesn't test all that well, it just seems to deliver the goods
consistently. I've been using mine a lot too lately, the 31LTD has
seen very little use.

The A100/2.8 Macro is somewhat prone to picking up reflections off the

It's a great lens in every other respect, so it is kind of annoying.

Here's an example:

Is that the kind of bluish smudge looking area in the center of the top

I've not yet seen that in my photos. I'm not doubting you, I just have

The same. Watch out for bright subjects and/or backgrounds and it's fine,
but put a window (or a white background) in the picture and very bad things
can happen.

I used my 100 Macro as a general purpose short tele until it became a
longish tele via the magic of cropped sensor digital.
It has a very short throw fwithin normal picture taking distances, and from
the sounds of it a much shorter overall throw than the Voigtlander.

The DA35/macro has been kinda glued to my K7 for a couple of weeks now.
It is a superb lens.

I've had that same problem with a different imaging system.

Unfortunately, we couldn't just send it off to KEH and pick up a Tamron instead.

I expect that this is where a focus limiter would be useful.
I just had a look at my A100/2.8 Macro (which is a lens I would not
reccomend to anyone with a DSLR).

Is there any reason for that other than the long focus throw?

The A100/2.8 Macro is somewhat prone to picking up reflections off the
sensor and sending them back as image forming light.

It's a great lens in every other respect, so it is kind of annoying.

Here's an example:

In a lot of cases yes. Without quick shift yes. But when you are
hanging in a precarious position using one hand to stop you from
falling into the ocean and the other to hold the camera to your face,
it tends to be quiet useful.

Anything beyond 1:1 is manual focus only - in fact I use a set of
bellows and Olympus lenses that gets me from about 1/4 life size to 16
time life size (though above 10 times it's getting a bit soft). I
don't take it out in the field very often though.

You need to try the FA 100mm f/2.8 macro. 270 degrees gets you from infinity
to 1:1. With the focus limiter on it stops after about 45 degrees (about 2ft.
focus distance).

The gearing from the AF screw to the barrel doesn't seem to be any different to
any other lens and as a result it's the quickest AF lens I have.

A quote from the following test of the Pentax FA100/2.8:

http://www.photozone.de/pentax/130-pentax-smc-fa-100mm-f28-macro-review--lab-test-report

"The FA 100mm f/2.8 has no internal AF motor and relies on a slotted drive
screw operated by the camera. It takes quite a while if you feel the need to AF
from infinity towards 1:1 magnification. In other words - the AF is a bit lame,
prone to hunting and fairly noisy. However, macro users often prefer manual
focusing anyway and for mainstream applications you can take advantage of the
focus limiter. When restricting the AF to a range between 0.6m-infinity the AF
speed is actually very fast and leaves nothing to be desired here."

The Tamron limiter restricts focus to 1.5m - Infinity, the AF speed is fast
enough to capture moving subjects.

I use a A50/2.8 for my product photos to
good extent and with great performance.
I also have the F100m/2.8 but it often
too long for the job.

Focus limiters help alot with prevent the lens from racking back and
forth through the entire focus throw, but you still end up with a lens
with an unusually long throw even over the limited range which results
in pedestrian AF speeds.

Just under 1.5m - infinity = approx 1/4 turn.
