Re: PESO -- Reflections in waiting for summer.

2016-02-06 Thread P.J. Alling
It was going to take layer masks to bring out all the dynamic range. If
I lighten the cottages the sky just gets completely blown out and detail
starts to disappear in the reflection. Basically I processed for the
sky reflection and used several curve layers to bring the sky and
cottages back a bit without going too crazy.

Like it very much - don't mind that it's dark, the sun has either set or

in the reflection.

Interesting subject, good composition but it's too dark IMO.
Opening the image in PS & setting the end points in the histogram will help
alot. I did that and moved the midpoint and got a more acceptable image
without blowing out the highlights.

Well it's just another stupid landscape.

It's a fricking Winter Wonderland outside, just chock full of photo
opportunities. Wet sticky snow clinging to everything, high key, high
contrast, every time I look out the window I think I should really go out
there, really...

Damn I feel old right now.

Dang, that's a nice shot! One might brighten the cottages and reflections a
bit, but it's lovely.

I wasn't feeling terribly spry walking to work this morning, either; got too
late a start to take the camera along and shoot on the way.

Re: PESO Reflections

The LX is surprisingly valuable. EX copies are regularly advertised for
$300-$400 at KEH.com. Cleaned up with four interesting but not
particularly rare lenses it could easily be worth $700. However it's
most probably would need a CLA, (including mirror bumpers), not an
uncomplicated job. What were the lenses by the way. Just curious.

he was old enough to have shared a baby sitter with Teddy Roosevelt. He said
he wanted $700, but it came with four lenses. Unfortunately, none of the lenses
were particularly interesting. He might be able to get $70 for the whole kit.
Oh well, at least I got a fun photo out of it.

There was a 50 f/4, a not very fast manual zoom, maybe 70-200, some sort of

He said he wanted $700, but it came with four lenses. Unfortunately, none
of the lenses were particularly interesting. He might be able to get $70
for the whole kit. Oh well, at least I got a fun photo out of it.

That collection of lenses alone are worth all of 100 bucks, so the
package assuming the LX doesn't have sticky mirror syndrome is about
300-400 total. Still better than $70.00. I guess he'll be holding it
for a long time.

Re: PESO: Reflections

2011-11-08 Thread Keith Mosier
The facades of the buildings reflected are cast iron or have cast iron
components.  I used to work in one about 45 years ago, it was in terrible shape
then.  Unfortunately most of the buildings were in very bad condition.  A local
developer has purchased the block and wants to build a new hotel and office
building.  Initially he wanted to demolish the entire group of buildings, but
has agreed with the preservation powers and local government to save the
facades and incorporate them into the new design.  Several of the worst
buildings have been demolished and the photo I took reflects the facades with
the sky behind the window frames.

Thanks Paul, but some of the credit has to go to Godfrey. We were out
shooting in SF that day, and he explained to me that it's OK to overexpose
based on the metered scene. So this shot was about a good stop over the
meter reading, thus enabling good shadow detail retention while still
maintaining detail in the brightest parts of the scene.

What is constantly surprising me is the latitude one has when shooting raw,
especially when the exposures are made with a knowledge of how they'll be
processed in PS. It's been said that shooting digital is like shooting
slide film in terms of how one exposes, but that just doesn't seem right.
I'd swear that if you get the exposure right, and know what you're doing
with the raw converter, you can get more latitude than color neg film.

BTW, of all the K lenses I've used on the DS thus far, the 135/2.5 is
clearly amongst the best.

True on all counts. I would guess shooting digital is like shooting
slide film if you shoot jpegs. But shooting RAW is a whole different
game, and the latitude is far greater. I overexpose a bit when I need
shadow detail, and I will usually shoot right at the meter reading when
I need highlight detail. It seems that the camera (at least the D) will
underexpose a bit at the meter reading. I've had good luck with the K
135/2.5 as well. I used it for most of my wakeboarding shots. That was
a situation where I went with meter reading to save the highlights in
the water spray.

Interesting picture, Shel. I am surprised to read your opinion about
latitude of RAW... I still think that (well, at least in Israel, where
sun is very strong) it is more like shooting slide even in RAW format...

In fact, the highlights are so strong that I set my *istD to -2/3 EV
compensation as a matter of course.

Obviously, my mileage is different than yours ;-).

Re: PESO - Reflections

2006-04-14 Thread Shel Belinkoff
Well, Boris, the latitude is there, it just may be that the strong Israeli
sun creates a much greater contrast range than in other parts of the world.
OTOH, my comment was made with the idea of including post processing as
part of the scheme. Not knowing what programs you're using, or what your
skill level is with that program, it's hard for anyone sitting half way
around the world from you to know what the full potential is for you in
Israel.

That said - and I don't mean it to be a slight in any way - every scene is
different, even where the sun may not shine so brightly. And the choice of
exposure is also decided by how you want to present the final photograph.
That's been a constant regardless of what kind of film you shoot, or if you
use a DSLR.

Re: PESO - Reflections

As Shel said, every shot is different. This particular shot has a large
amount of black area. The meter of course is dumb and doesn't know
that. This is definitely a case where you would want to add more
exposure to an averaging or even matrix meter reading. I would gues
that an incident or gray card meter reading would be about plus one
from the camera's meter.

I'm trying to picture where that is. Do you mean Sout Park between 8th
and 9th Street or between 8th and 9th Avenues?

I think. They left the facade facing park ave south, thank goodness. It
housed the
courts for traffic tickets at one point, I recall.
I was lucky with the light - and that I had the camera with me - but it is
a fertile
field right now. grab shots 'r us :)

East Village, dan :)

the building is going up between Lafayette, Astor place, and the tail end of
4th ave,
across from Cooper Union, where there had been a parking lot for years, and
next to
the Carl Fisher building, which is now luxury condos. Maybe I'll do a long
shot when I go out
so you guys can see what it looks like that are trying to picture it.
Because the glass in that building has gone up only very recently, it isn't
going to look familiar
to anyone except those of us in the 'hood or very recent tourists :)

Nice shot Ann. Good eye. Isn't the Wanamker building at 770 Broadway?
Last I looked it had a pretty impressive list of tenants, including
some publishers, design studios, etc. I do regret the loss of the Carl
Fisher building, not to mention the Carl Fisher stores in NY and
Chicago. I assume they're all gone. They were a wonderful resource for
obscure scores.

Cool shot!!

I like the way the reflected building is all disjointed, but still the
parts remain contiguous. Love the curves of the face of the
reflecting building.

As someone else on this thread said, Ann, you've got a great eye!

cheers,
frank
