Somehow that reminds me of a discussion in Oslo a few months ago. It was noted
that if muslims were as fundamentalist as some people think about one third of
the bars and restaurants in Oslo would be closed during ramadahn, and they
would never serve alcohol.

DagT

yeah, I remember him. He seemed nice and then it got ugly really
quickly. He was some sort of fundamentalist Christian. Wait, does
this mean that all Christians don't shop at BH? I'm so confused.

Re: WTF? was OT: new camera

2010-10-25 Thread Walter Gilbert
The national landscape is dotted with friendly local abortion
providers who go about their day-to-day lives without bodyguards ...
which raises a question: How many friendly local abortion providers
are there in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, or any other predominantly
Islamic nation? And how long do you suppose one would last if it were
built?

And, why is it that it bothers so many people that the Old Testament
refers to the stoning of adulterers when cases of its adherents actually
doing so are virtually unheard of, while those same people can't even
bestir themselves to sneer at the conduct actually being performed as a
common practice by adherents of the Qu'ran as exponents of Shariah law?

I'm always amazed at the indignation of people who rail against the very
notion of organized religion whenever a lone nutcase murders an abortion
provider or phones in a bomb threat, while they placidly tut-tut the
shame of a culture that by regular practice saws of the clitoris of an
infant girl with a shard of glass in order to free her from temptation,
or takes a dagger to the ears and nose of an adolescent girl who has
brought shame upon her family by being seen in public with a boy she's
not related or married to.

Re: WTF? was OT: new camera

2010-10-24 Thread Walter Gilbert

My first DSLR was a used E-20n.

Whisper-quiet, built like a tank, and takes wonderful photos. I looked
at Olympus for a long time when I started looking into buying my first
new DSLR. The great thing about it is that it was a fixed-lens, so I
didn't have anything invested beyond the cost of the camera and all the
accessories ($120 US + shipping). So, I was free to look around. I
was, of course, tempted by Canon and Nikon -- cajoled by friends to go
with Canon, so I could be a part of the club. And, was even lured by
the guy at the camera shop to try a Sony.

But, I stuck to my guns and got the K-x that I'd been salivating over
for months. Nary a regret to this day. But, I still like my Oly, and
would use it a lot more often if the write-speed weren't so achingly
slow. I've loaned it out to a kid to use as a learner camera for his
school newspaper.

Funny E-10 story: a woman in my department would try to use this camera
periodically. She was one of these extremely intelligent, ultra competent
people, but she could never get the E10 to to work properly. One day I'm going
through thee whole process with her. She aims thee camera and hits the shutter
release. Smoke starts to come out from under the flash. I was sure the camera
was toast, but it still works fine to this day. My friend bought a sketch pad.
;-). Actually, she later left chemistry and became on of those folks who sails
expensive sailboats from point A to B for the rich owners that didn't have
time. The most common trip was from the US to the Mediterranean and back. As I
said, an amazing person. She met a nice pirate and settled down (on a boat of
course).

Me too I guess (excepting Canon DSLRs of course ;-)

Interesting. Is it the name, the heritage, what? Just curious. After
shooting Pentax film for over 10 years, when I got a D60 I wasn't at all
enamored with it - it was plasticky and felt a bit cheap. The brand
didn't bother me because - let's face it - anyone shooting Pentax
doesn't give a stuff about branding. But when I got a 1D mark II it was
such a pleasure to use - the layouts of the controls are pretty
unconventional, yet once learned were faster than anything I can recall.
The actual design of the camera is ergonomically pleasing, and (at the
risk of making Godders wince) actually beautiful. Really like it.
Seriously - I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the 1D as
an object is right up there with an Aston Martin in my eyes.

I would imagine that most mid-range cameras aren't to my liking - Canon,
Nikon or Pentax - except the K7 that i saw at GFM was really nice - and
would definitely consider one (or K5) as the design and ergonomics
looked great.

So what is the big thing about hating a Canon?

Well, since this is turning into a 'true confessions' thread, I admit to
owning no less than 10 Olympusses (or should that be Olympi?). My
favourite - the Ace E, an interchangeable lens rangefinder from 1958
(but sadly I haven't managed to find the 35 and 80 mm lenses).

I've owned two Olympus bodies; both were Olympus Pens.
The first was in 1968 or so, when I had a half-frame model (I wonder
what happened to that body - I don't think I've seen it since then).
The second I bought a couple of months ago; an EPL-1.

I was tempted by the OM-1 (and even more tempted by the OM-2). I was
wondering about buying one to replace my Spotmatic II, but then Pentax
came out with the MX, and my photographic future was sealed.

the extremist excesses of their coreligionists.

If all muslims are responsible for al qaeda, then all christians are
responsible for Timothy McVeigh, Eric Rudolph, James Kopp, Scott Roeder, Paul
Jennings Hill ... and every pederast priest that ever molested an alter boy.

That's a stretch. al qaeda acts in the name of allah and their version of
muslim law. McVeigh, for example, had no close connection to christianity and
was just a U.S. government hater. Your analogy is faulty.

That's bullshit. McVeigh was an agnostic if not an atheist. For every
Eric Rudolph, with a twisted vision of Christianity, there's a Ted
Kaczynski with no discernible religion using the same tactics. The
Communists, who are official atheists were responsible for more deaths
in the 20th century than all the religions of history combined and
calling the superstitions of the Nazi's, the second largest group of
mass murderers in history, a religion beggers belief, and would make me
question your education. Finally while the Catholic Church may have
been in some way responsible for the protecting pedophile priests,
proving that any large organization would rather avoid bad publicity
rather than see justice done, the Priests themselves were operating
against the teachings and official policy of said Church, as were the
Bishops who were protecting them.

However, I should admit that I have owned a Nikon and a Canon.  The Canon was
just a PS -- kind of a one night thing. And the Nikon, well,  that Nikon was
a
rangefinder. I mean, really, how could I have passed on  that?

I mostly shoot Canon now, though I'm not interested in their DSLRs  in
 the slightest.

I've always liked Olympus. I've been known to search eBay for fine examples of
 the OM-4ti.

Here is one of my first images shot with the E-10, it was a revelation
compared to the procession of crap that came before:

Well, since this is turning into a 'true confessions' thread, I admit to
owning no less than 10 Olympusses (or should that be Olympi?). My
favourite - the Ace E, an interchangeable lens rangefinder from 1958
(but sadly I haven't managed to find the 35 and 80 mm lenses).
