And you haven't yet discovered LBA: Lens Buyer's Addiction.

Welcome to the fold.

My favorite photography book is Light, Science and Magic by Hunter, Biver and
Fuqua.

I've been using Linux since '93 (Yggdrasil running the 0.99 kernel) and bought
a mac for photo processing. I was running Bibble on Linux a few years ago, but
eventually switched to a lightroom on a mac for processing photos. The Mac UI
is a bit confusing, but you can always pop up a terminal and get to the nice
intuitive bash prompt.

The other problem that I ran into with linux was calibrating monitors, which is
possible in theory, but difficult in practice as the companies that make the
calibration tools want people to pay extra for the software to use them.

If you have any friends or family that work at Adobe, the employee discount is
definitely the way to go, lightroom is $25. The catch being that they only get
a limited number of licenses each year at that price.

I know next to nothing about photography. I've read "Understanding

currently reading "Creative Nature & Outdoor Photography" by Brenda

be reading, I'm all ears.

I've never used any image manipulation type software other than
Picassa. I'm a Linux user and have evaluated Bibble 5 for a couple
evenings. It's crashed on me a few times and sucks all available
memory and some swap when it imports RAW and builds thumbnails. I
might have to break down and get a MAC at some point, if all Linux
image software is this crash prone. Bibble does have some cool tricks
though. I really like the heal/clone thing but I suppose other
software packages have something similar.

OK, I do have a question:

Is there a page defining the acronyms used here, like: PESO, GESO,

Welcome to the list. Controlling color temp with RAW shooting is fairly easy. I
just shoot on auto white balance and adjust during conversion – either to my
preference or, using the eyedropper, to a neutral color, like grey or white.
Getting out of Linux and into PhotoShop elements, PhotoShop or Lightroom, on
either a Mac or PC, will help in that regard.

Hi Kenton - welcome!

Christine has explained the main acronyms - you might find the PDML FAQ
useful. It was compiled some time ago but we tend to forget it's
available:

http://pdmlpug.org/?page_id=47

If you're on Linux, the GIMP plus the UFRaw plug in would be worth a try
- certainly the price is right!

As for other resources on digital photography, there are lots of good
resources and tutorials on line; Eg:

* Digital Photography Tutorials:
http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials.htm

* The Luminous Landscape:
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/index.shtml

* Photography BB - free online Photography Magazine:
http://www.photographybb.com/magazine/

Understood. I've taken over a thousand photos so far with the camera.
99.99% are crap and the rest are not quite crap. LOL But
I've learned a few things. One thing I've learned is my inability to
remember to change ISO and white balance. When the camera is in my
hands aperture and shutter speed is all I seem to think about. White
balance I've read isn't a big thing when shooting raw, but I've not
been able to take one photo shot on "incandecent" and one on "cloudy,"
with the same settings otherwise, look the same in Bibble. I should
probably make a mental checklist to go over before every shot.

   Welcome aboard, Kent!

First of all, you don't want that old M-50/1.7 -- let me take that off
your hands.

Secondly, with regard to editing software, you might give The Gimp a
try. Being a WinXP guy, I don't know if it would be as much of a
resource hog as Bibble, but I'm sure someone on the list will be able to
tell you that.

As for the acronyms, it looks like Christine has that all spelled out
for you, as it were.

Aside from that, just email me off-list and I'll give you a snail mail
address where you can unburden yourself from that junky old prime lens.

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the list, and new to Digital SLR Photography. I had been
craving a Cannon 30d for about a year, but when I finally got really
serious and read reviews, etc... I decided on the K10d.

I had the added (dubious) benefit of some old Sears k-mount lenses
floating around my house that were my fathers. Probably not the best
lenses, but they work and I have that attachment with my father that
way.

Anyway I was out and about in Hemisfair Park near the Tower of the
Americas and took this photo last night. Taken with the 18-55 kit
lense.

Converted to B&W in the beta of Lightroom.

PAW: Picture a week.

PESO means "Picture Every So Often" and it's a photo posted somewhere
on the web for comments, criticism, suggestions, admiration, etc.

A few years ago some people started posting PAW (Picture A Week)
photos. One photograph shot and posted on the web every week. PESO
evolved as an alternative for people too busy or otherwise unable to
get a photo on line every week.

So let's see some of yours!

It is perfectly okay to mention your own ebay listings. However, it's best
not to mention other people's current eBay listings because some members

Welcome to the list. Don't be ashamed, there are plenty of people on
this list who are just plain camera junkies and have several different
brands of cameras, myself included. The *istD is definitely my
favorite, though.

It's not that Ebay shouldn't be mentioned, just that it's not nice if
you are selling something there to use this list to encourage bidding.
If you want to offer something for sale here do it before you send it to
Ebay, then never mention it again!!! Just kidding!!! I will get in
trouble for making that joke, I'm sure.

It sounds like you will fit right in.

Hi Karen,
elcome to the PDML. You both do very nice work. It's great to have you
here. And Karen's drawings are exceptional. I really enjoyed them.
You'll also find there are some other people here who are involved in
showing dogs. William Robb chief among them.

The agreement not to mention ebay auctions (which is by no means
unanimous but probably a narrow majority) has to do with protecting the
interests of those who spend A LOT OF TIME perusing ebay listings for
exceptional bargains. Many of us felt that pointing out good ebay deals
here would drive prices up. We thought that those who spend a lot of
time looking for the best merchandise should benefit. If someone
randomly mentions good ebay prices for desirable Pentax equipment,
there will probably be some objections. On the other hand, mentions of
non-Pentax equipment is fine, as are warnings about auctions that
appear to be scams. We also encourage or at least tolerate members
listing their own auctions. (I did just that a couple of hours ago, so
I want to be certain to point out that it's okay to do just that.:-)

I will look forward to seeing more of your posts and more of your work.

Hi Jasmine,

Welcome to the list. Frank was right, take lots of pictures and look at lots
of pictures. After you get a feel for the camera controls you might want to
keep a note book and take notes on how you took each image (F-stop setting
on the lens, Shutter speed setting, lighting conditions, etc.). Take your
time and enjoy yourself. When you get the pictures back compare the results
with your notes and see what worked and what didn't. You'll probably learn
more if you don't wait very long between taking and developing the pictures.
Hope you find this helpful and good luck.

Welcome to the list! Don't worry about the level of knowledge... there's
a huge range here, and we're all still learning in many ways. We all
suck... some of us are just sucking at a different level.

RE: New to list

2004-01-03 Thread frank theriault
Oh yeah, Jasmine,

One more thing. Look at photographs. Lots of them. By everyone, but
especially good photographers. Go to the library or a bookstore and get or
look at books by the best photographers in the world. See what they do. It
will give you inspiration, and once you have a good idea of what you're up
to, you can look at those great works with a critical eye, deconstruct them,
and figure out what they were up to. It will help you.

There are always some amazing photographs on our monthly gallery:

http://pug.komkon.org/

And, I forgot to tell you. Once you get going, and figure out the mechanics
of your camera, take lots of photographs. Like several rolls a week. Don't
be afraid to make mistakes. Critically analyze your work. Have others do
the same. Learn from what you've done (both the good and the bad) and then
go take more photographs!

Most of all HAVE FUN!! That's really what it's all about, right?

Okay, off my soapbox for now.

cheers,

Hello!

I am new to this list and new to photography. I have a feeling this is not
the list for me - from the messages I've been reading you all seem very
experienced. Maybe I need to find a list for beginners?

Well, first, let me introduce myself - my name is Jasmine and I live in
Portland, OR. I recently inherited a Spotmatic II, a Takumar 55m lens, a
Takumar 200m lens, a Soligor zoom macro 28-80mm lens, and a vivitar
skylight 49mm filter. I have ALWAYS wanted a camera like this - I've
always been interested in photography - but I don't know how to use the
darn thing! Most of the manuals and websites I've looked at are as
confusing as figuring it out myself.

(I may be wording the terms and equipment wrong - forgive me - like I said
I'm new at this)

Can anyone suggest anything for beginners? Pentax for Dummies?

I have a lot of questions, some of them probably stupid (yes, I know,
there's no such thing as a stupid question) and I don't want to take up
space and time with you if I should be on another list.

Thanks so much,
jasmine

Bad assumption, Jasmine. Here on the PDML we demonstrate quite
regularly that most of us are beginners in one way or another.
(Actually, we ~all~ are beginners here, in my opinion, but some of
us just don't realize it yet/still.) Welcome.

I owned a couple mamiya C33s and all 7? of the lens sets for
about a dozen years until I sold them for the Pentax 67 system.
The bodies never let me down and the lenses were all excellent
but not quite as good as the superb P67 lenses in terms of contrast.
I used them mostly for B&W with great results. There are two
accessories that are a must. 1. the prism finder and 2. the
hand grip. The camera is very awkward without these items but
unfortunately the prism is costly.

Thanks to everyone for the ebay info. It was very helpful. By the way, I
work a few blocks away from the biggest camera store here in Edmonton, and I
often walk over on lunch breaks. I had been wanting to try some medium
format but the price scares me, anyway a guy working at the store had an old
mamiya c33 twin lens reflex which seems to be in pretty good shape and he
sold it to me for $150 Canadian. Pretty good deal I think.

I have sold (via eBay) to Italy, England, Scotland, Norway, Poland, Hong
Kong, Japan, Singapore, Australia, Canada, and the U.S.
Maybe also Belgium. No problems, except that there are extra steps to take
in the paperwork, it is more expensive (and harder to predict the cost) to
ship, and maybe just a wee bit of anxiety until the deal is done. The
advantage of taking the risk is that you will certainly expand the potential
market for your used gear.

I have bought (via eBay) from a similar range of places. My biggest
adventure in that regard was buying a $1500 G4 Powerbook from a guy "in
Seattle", only to have him ask me to send him the money in Romania. Why
Romania I ask. I am here on a mission trip and I am selling my computer for
expenses, he says. Right, I say. Bye, I say. And I bought my Powerbook from
a guy in Colorado instead.

It depends on your comfort level. There are some places (like Nigeria)
that are notorious for scams, and should be avoided, while others
(Indonesia, the Middle East, etc.) aren't as notorious, but are still
risky.

One of the biggest problems with shipping internationally is getting paid
in a secure manner. Canada and the US have very strict laws regarding
mail fraud, but it can be difficult and expensive to pursue scammers in
other countries. If the buyer pays with a money order, it could be a
month or two before your bank discovers that it's a forgery, leaving you
on the hook for it. If they pay with PayPal, you're really screwed. Many
international buyers love PayPal because it's fast and easy, but PayPal
refuses to offer any seller protection for items shipped internationally.
In other words, if your buyer requests a chargeback on his credit card for
his PayPal payment, you're SOL. PayPal will withdraw that money from your
bank account or credit card without your permission, and then charge you a
$10.00 US fee for the chargeback.

If the buyer has a good feedback rating you'll probably be ok. I ship
internationally to most countries and have never had a problem, but I've
only done that around 10 times.

Hi Everyone:
I've read the list for a while now but have a question so I thought I'd
subscribe. Before my question I'll tell you that my history is a Nikkormat
FT2 I got as a present when I was a kid in the 70's. It packed it in two
years ago and a coworker gave me his dad's long un used Pentax Super
Program
which I initially didn't like compared to the Nikkormat but Pentax grew on
me and now I also have an me super, Z-1p, ist, and
MZ-3 (as well as lots of lenses). The lead up to my question is:
I had given up trying to find a good used Z-1p at a reasonable price, and
bought the MZ-3 in last February. Of course, two months later I found a
Z-1p
at a reasonable price. I shoot lots of sports and I love the hyperprogram
and 4 frames per second. But I rarely use the MZ-3 and think maybe I should
sell it while it still has a warrantee.
My question is: what is a reasonable price to set as a reserve on ebay,
considering it still has about 4 months warrantee left ( I checked with
pentax and they said it is transferable) and has only about 10 rolls put
through it?
Actually there are two questions, the second is while I have bought on
ebay and have never sold, I've noticed some sellers don't ship to
certain places -why is that? I live in Canada, should I only ship to
Canada and U.S?
Sorry, message is a lot longer than I originally planned, anyway, best

I usually set a reserve, when I do it, at the absolute lowest I'll take
for it. At the same time I use a Buy It Now just a little above the
going rate just to see if someone really wants it. Works sometimes.
The key to a good sale is good pics. My current 2 ads have a mediocre
and no pic, and so aren't selling (I've misplaced my digital camera lens!)
Personally, I think now is the time to reduce ( though not eliminate )
one's film body inventory. Prices are dropping noticably.
(A good Super Program would have sold for $90 a year ago but today
seems to be going around $65.) Do it while you can. A Warranty is
a good selling point to make full use of.

Enjoy the list & have fun.

as "as is".Unlike transparency films where what you see is what you get.
Certain adjustments can be made, but it's the observer's intuition and
memory that determines what constitutes a correctly processed print.
There's a lot of latitude for exposure and correction with negative film.
