Beautiful car - great shot.  The dealer had one in the show room when I
purchased my Mustang in April 1964.  My memory says it was BRG but it
may have been blue - it's a 59 year old memory.

Re: PESO: porcelain fungus

2023-11-15 Thread Henk Terhell
Thanks Larry and Paul.
Larry, I used a pocket flashlight above the mushrooms. Part of the light on
the edges is already shown on the raw pics which are in focus.
Final sharpening amplifies this edge effect I guess.
In focus stacking I introduced some ghosting effect (my enemy) that I have
to remove in photoshop or affinity photo but it is a precise job.
The surface in these woods is of course not at all solid so touching the
camera on tripod to change focus may introduce movement.
The remote control is useful though.
The K-1 with its tilted screen is a fine camera for this work but the lack
of built in focus stack is a great handicap.

Re: OT: Print Scanner

2023-11-11 Thread John Sessoms
If it's all 4x6 prints, the low end Epson would probably be the best bet
(lowest cost).

The software bundled with the scanner should also be good enough.

The main thing is scanning takes time.

On 11/10/2023 8:41 PM, Ed Keeney wrote:

Long time lurker.

My sister has been asking me about how to get her old printed photos
scanned to digital files. My guess is her family albums of 4x6's.
Should she use a service or buy a bulk scanner (vs flatbed).

The scanners run $200-$600 depending on quality (Epson FastFoto
FF-680W being the high end, Plustek the low end). Hard to spend $600
for what essentially is tool for only a limited amount of time.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these? Preferences one
way or the other?

But also I do have the Epson v 39 that has been mentioned, I use it mostly for
documents. But I think it is ok for old family prints. Tomorrow I’ll scan and
post an old family print which I’ll do at 100, 200, 300, 600, 1200, 2400, 3600…
We’ll see.

Only about 4-5 members get dumped in SPAM, including myself. Have tired all
ways of whitelisting and suchlike but no luck. It's clearly something outside
my control. I suspect it might be because the addresses have been spoofed at
some time. I know mine has because I used to get quite a few offers for blue

I have also had good results with ScanCafe.   They provided timely,
quality service exactly as I requested on my orders.  Over time, I've
had them process my complete holdings of slides and negatives plus a
some prints I didn't 'have time to scan myself.

I think 300 dpi might be a bit low. Many home printers nowadays
can print at 1200 (or even 2400) dpi, so presumably there's some
extra information available at more than 300dpi on physical media.
That being said, though, I've found scanning at 600dpi to be good
enough for pretty much anything I've done.

I would recommend using a service instead of buying a scanner. If your sister
is like most people, the scanning is a one time task .. to do good scanning
take time and practice … a *lot* of practice and a *lot* of time … and then,
once done, the scanner is of limited value and you have to put more effort into
selling it. Cheap scanners do a relatively poor job, the scanning services all
use the best scanners. Etc.

The scanning services are run by people who are pretty expert at the task and
they do it efficiently and well, at a modest cost per photo. Scanning the
family archive is a one-time task for most people … get the whole lot done, pay
whatever it costs, and you're done: enjoy the photos.

I've had good luck with ScanCafe.com … I've arranged and managed the scanning
process with them for several of my old clients (when I was still working).
Their prices are reasonable, and they give you some options in the kind of
quality and costs, depending on your need/use of the photos.

Good luck.

I agree a cheap Epson model photo scanner (like the $100 Epson V39II) will
do the job.
However, I don't think scanning of ordinary prints at higher than 300 dpi
is worthwhile as results will not become better.
This in contrast with scanning of negatives or slides.

My sister has been asking me about how to get her old printed photos scanned to

4x6's.
Should she use a service or buy a bulk scanner (vs flatbed).

The scanners run $200-$600 depending on quality (Epson FastFoto FF-680W being

Re: November PUG is up

2023-11-09 Thread Stanley Halpin
Thanks again Brian!

Several this month intrigued me. Ralf’s well seen signage, Henk’s fritillary
courtship, Brian’s beautiful scene of a typical freighter…

John’s nice shot of his re-purposed shipping container got me wondering about
our local zoning restrictions and if/how I could sneak such a container into
the vacant lot across the street. But PT’s Banana Boat really got me going! It
was so reminiscent of scenes we saw on the upper Amazon in 2018 that I
immediately began kicking myself for not having thought of something like that
for my own submission.

So I went into my archives for that period, found that I did NOT get a picture
of the canoes loaded with food or goods to/from the market. Several nice shots
of one or two guys motoring along in their transport canoes, but nothing that
would have fit the theme. Chagrin that I did not think of looking earlier,
relief that I did not miss a potential submission.

Meanwhile as I was typing this, my computer screensaver did its every-2
minute-image swap and I was presented with an image that would have been nice
for next month. I’ve already submitted for December, and will put this
second-thought image out as a PESO next month.

I did, briefly, see a screen flash up saying something about having verified I
was on a secure connection, but that was almost immediately followed by the
page featuring the cormorant.
Other than that, the only other irritation was a pop-up asking if I wanted to
be on their mailing list, which showed up when I scrolled down to see the rest
of the page, but the "No" button was plainly displayed.

Hi Henk, it was shot outside but in a very sheltered area. According to
the time stamps on the files, it took just over 3 minutes to photograph
the stack, so about one frame per second on average.
Automatic focus stack has very quickly become a must have feature for me
for a new camera. When the K1 replacement comes along (hopefully before
I've shuffled off) I'm really hoping they include it as a feature.

The Fuji lenses are superb, but the 80/2.8 stands out as exceptional.

One of the features built into the X-T5 is focus stacking, a tool that I

This was shot with the Fuji 80/2.8 macro at f4. It is comprised of 201
stacked images, which I admit is just silly.

Hi Gang,

It's been years. But just today I saw a name on a Hagerty Auto
article, "Paul Stenquist," and I stopped in my tracks and thought, "I
know that name!".

https://tinyurl.com/4dexsnzu

Good work, Paul. I enjoyed that thoroughly.

Anyway, I hope everyone is enjoying themselves on the list. I myself
haven't been shooting much at all. I no longer do any commercial
photography but I'm still a "serial appreciator" of photography in
general even if other things have muscled it to the sidelines these
days.

Some may remember me selling a venerable Pentax-A* 85mm f1.4 for a
1967 Austin-Healey Sprite a long time ago. Well, it's almost
finished...it's only been 12 years...

Talking of Sprites ...

A couple of days ago I spotted this one parked in a driveway a bock or so away
from my house.
As soon as I got home and unloaded the shopping I picked up my camera and
strolled back there.

   https://www.panix.com/~johnf/temp/BugEye.jpg

It turns out that it's owned by a guy even closer to where I live - on the next
street over!
I'd actually stopped by to talk to him some years ago when I'd spotted him
working on another
car in his driveway (I don't remember exactly what).

2023-10-17 Thread Henk Terhell
Thanks all for your nice comments.
Ann, I never pick any of the mushrooms as I've not been educated or trained
to do this, though I recognize some of the most common ones.
And in the store you can buy (without risk) cultivated mushrooms for little
money.
By the way, I wish Pentax cameras had a focus stack feature as I have to
manually change focus for stacking with the risk of a change in camera
position.
Usually I put my camera on a plate on which an Arca Swiss clamp is mounted,
to get lower than a tripod with a ballhead.
