That's nice, but they need to start putting some faster primes on the market.
There isn't much
advantage in buying a 35mm f/2.8 lens when the 16-50 is also an f/2.8, unless
all you are going
to do with the 35mm lens is macro work at closer ranges than the 16-50 will
allow. I would
really like a fast standard prime, something like a 30-35mm f/1.4.

Wasn't a fast 30mm servo lens on the latest roadmap? and isn't the
31/1.8 Ltd still available? and the 35/2?

As a normal lens the FA 35 f2.0 would seem to be a better choice, it's a
stop faster and about $300 less expensive, (and still available from
places like B&H photo new), and I like a bit more working distance than
a normal macro usually gives, so though I don't have one, the DFA 100mm
seems to me to be a better choice for macro. On the other hand neither
is a Limited.

There is a 30mm lens on the roadmap, what speed it turns out to be is anyone's
guess. I'd be
willing to bet it will be ~f/2.4 though, based on recent prime lens offerings.
For me, this is not really a fast lens.
I have both the 31/1.8 and A and FA 35/2 lenses, neither is as fast as I would
like.
I really like f/1.4ish standard lenses.
I am pretty sure I am in a minority though.

In my part of the world the FA35 is about the same price as the DA35
macro. I do have a F100 macro. The 35 should have more dof and also a
nice Limited walk around lens. The 16-50 is about twice the price.
I think I want it...

I like fast lenses too ... that's why I bought the Leica 25/1.4 for
the L1 ... and why I have the 43/1.9 for the Pentax. Between f/1.4
and f/2 is a stop, nice but not critical in my definition of "fast".
That stop costs a lot in size, weight, money etc while usually not
providing all that much additional in way of performance.
Particularly when we have cameras that can support ISO 800 to 3200
with such quality as we do now.

It's a DA* and the only other DA* short prime on the horizon is the

just buy the 31 Limited).

Apparently, you missed the part where I already have a 31, but would really

I couldn't wait for the 55, and so bought the Nokton 58, which is a wonderful

The extra stop of speed is a nice complement to the high ISO support. That
extra stop gives the
auto focus a lot more to work with. When I bought my 50mm f/1.2 lens, it wasn't
because I
intended to shoot at f1.2, it was because I wanted all the screen brightness I
could get for
focusing at dimly lit venues, and I found that the 1/3 stop of viewfinder
brightness it gave me
over an f/1.4 lens was of benefit.
Your definiton of fast matters to me about as much as my definition of it
matters to you, so
there really is no basis for your pushing your definitions down anyone's throat.

No, I didn't. I was making a general comment about buying the 31 (from

So do I, and I´ve preordered both.

From the current DA-lenses it looks like the Limiteds are compact and
beautiful, but the DA*-lenses have SDM, wide apertures and weather
sealing.

I would seriusly consider a 30/1.4, and would even consider letting my 31 go to
finance it, as I
expect it would be a fairly pricey lens.
Anything slower though, they can keep.

If and only if the lens maintains the same or better contrast wide open.

I found that AF speed and accuracy with the FA20-35/4 was superior to
what I saw with the FA31 Limited ... presumably because the FA20-35
wide open was more contrasty than the FA31 wide open. Conjecture but

True. And the in-lens motor seems to make a difference as well. The DA*

Paul, I wonder how the focussing ramp length is influencing the AF
speed. In this regard the FA50 has quite a long focussing ramp. I
dunno about the 50-135 however but I know my dA18-55 often focussed
faster than my FA50/1.4 (!)

Certainly true.

Unless you like primes and prefer lenses without much vignetting or
distortion although you might argue that "It can be processed under PS
anyway".

The 16-50 doesn't vignette or distort much at 35mm. But it is much
larger than any 35mm prime in a DSLR mount except the Canon 35L

I tend to be a prime guy from a theoretical perspective. But I shoot
more with zooms. Love the primes, but the zooms are more flexible and
all three of my current ones are excellent performers.

Probably true until the light levels fall low enough that the slower lens just
isn't providing
enough light for the AF to operate at all. A 1.4 lens has fully two more stops
of potential low
light ability than a 2.8 lens after the AF has given up for good on trying to
focus on anything
with the slower lens.
Whether this makes any practical difference, I don't know, as I am guilty of
conjecture here as
well.

Great minds and all that.
