Interesting. I couldn't recall what the image was like originally, so looked in 
your collections for it - and found it.

What I would say is this. Yes the new image is quite a stunner with the colour 
change - but, one thing you lose a bit is the contrast in colour on those 
fantastic coronal ejections. I see they are accentuated even more with the 
deeper oranges and reds, but they are nowhere near the contrast in the original 
image.
Is there a half-way house to be had by giving the colour shift a bot less 
strength so you keep the 'easter egg' surprise of those CMEs? I say easter egg 
because it's such a stunning image on first viewing, but quickly the eye 
reaches those ejections  and the detail and staggering nature of the size of 
them (given that sun sun is 1 million miles across) is laid bare to see.
Beautiful image Larry, either way. Just my .02 :-)

I remember a guy on a newsgroup a couple of years back, he wanted to set up
his camera to take an all-day exposure of the sun tracing its path across
the sky while exposing properly for the foreground, using a very strong ND
filter.  I do not know if he actually did this or not.  The reciprocity
effects would make things difficult to say the least...

eyes to do this. Obviously I must be mistaken. Also a few of the other photos I have 
seen also appear to have been taken without filters. Are there any solar eclipse 
photographers on the list? How do you do it?

I wasn't refer to the consistency of the spacing, but the degree of spacing. As in how 
did he/she know how long to make each exposure so that each image of the sun did not 
overlap or be too far apart.

Hi Wendy,

The picture on the NASA site is described in the caption as a time-lapse
sequence.  Typically, shots like these are taken through a very strong
filter (typically an optical density of 5 or so, corresponding to a filter
factor of ~100,000).  To make things interesting, photographers sometimes
take an additional exposure (on the same frame) without a filter, when the
Sun is not in the field of view.  Not sure if there was the typical late
afternoon fog coming in off the ocean that day or not.  If there was, then
the exposure of the water and bridge was probably taken in the late
afternoon, well before the start of the eclipse.

 You'll notice that the actual image of the sun is completely blown. So no filter 
needed if you don't mind that. As far as eye protection, you could easily compose the 
photo by shielding the sun with your hand in front of the lens. It also appears to be 
a fairly wide angle lens. So if you did get a peak of the sun it would not be much if 
any worse than if you did so without a lens. I probably would hesitate to do so with 
the 400mm however! PLEASE BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR EYES!

Well,

   Since the apparent motion of the sun is constant, all the
photographer had to do was take a picture every X minuites.  He took 18
frames (counting the number of suns in the picture), and the eclipse in
San Fransiscio took T time.  All he had to do to find X is simple math: 
T/18 = X

   Calculating exposure must have been tough though . . . he had to
decide what the exposure should be, then divide it up so that all 18
exposures equalled the final exposure he needed.
