Joe, I seem to remember (may be wrong of course) that FA* where hand assembled.
If I'm right, it might explain why Pentax won't assemble them all just
for the fun of it.

2007/8/13, Joseph Tainter [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
   Me (previously):
The FA* 600 F4 and the FA* 300 F2.8 are both made to order. Presumably
this means that Pentax Japan has the components stockpiled, and
assembles them into a lens when a customer orders one. I assume these
lenses will be available as long as the stock of components lasts.
Whan that is gone, no more will be made.

I'm quite certain that my A15/3.5 was made to order as well, although
 Pentax
doesn't advertise it as being done that way. It took way longer to get than
it would have, had it been a stock item, even warehoused in Japan.

 William Robb

 -

I'm still trying to figure out the economics of this. Is assembly so
much more expensive than making parts that it makes sense for Pentax to
make the parts but not assemble them until someone orders a lens?

Come to think of it, for most lenses Pentax must have parts stockpiled
for repairs. Perhaps that is how it works.

the
type of thing where it would or could be cost effective to
automate the entire lens assembly based on the low production numbers
and incredible difficulty to entirely automate the assembly of the

Strange... In the description it says:

This item is manufactured at the time of order.
Winning item will be shipped as soon as the lens is manufactured.
The delivery time is 2 ~ 3 weeks.

Which is more likely; the seller not being entirely truthful, or that
Pentax still makes this lens to Special Order? It's been gone from the
catalogues for quite a while, hasn't it?

I get the address of my local camera store. No Costco.
 Paul

I got a whole list - 3 or 4 Costcos, a couple of gun shops, an outdoor
shop (a la REI, but not REI - who does sell Pentax binoculars), one of
the two real camera stores in the area and several Wolf and Ritz Camera
locations.

The Wolf and Ritz were the most interesting, because I got a Wolf Camera
at some address, and then a couple places down, there'll be a Ritz
Camera listed as a completely separate dealer, but with the same address
as the Wolf Camera. 8-D

With price considered, I wouldn't stockpile 600mm/4 even if I thought
there was a small market, if delivery time is 2 weeks like the auction
text claims. OTOH, lenses like the SMC 500/4.5 were made to order for
maybe a decade after it was officially denounced.

I bought mine new several years ago have used it with both film digital
bodies.

What kind of images did you produce?
Mainly wildlife, but I've also taken scenic's with it.
It is a fabulous lens!

Its also very heavy requires a sturdy tripod (I use a Gitzo 1548 CF). I
use mine with a gimbal head (Kirk - King Cobra), which greatly aids in its
use negates the weight effect for composition. Can't imagine using a lens
this big heavy without a gimbal head. To use it in the field I utilize a
backpack case (made by Kinesis) to haul it around.

I have a number of images taken with the 600, posted on the Pentax Gallery -
you can access the site query that lens to see some of the results.
